6 years after it was shut down, PlayStation Home has been resurrected by determined fans
Let’s travel back in time.
It’s 2008 and PlayStation has just launched a new feature for its console in a beta mode where PS3 owners can interact with others in a 3D social gaming platform called PlayStation Home.
However, fast forward to 2015 and that cool, awesome feature shuts down, without ever leaving its beta mode and you are left to never be able to use it ever again.
Until now.
Destination Home
Players will soon be able to join public and private online lobbies again thanks to the non-profit project titled Destination Home. It has been trying to resurrect Home for a number of years and even offers an offline version available to download and play on either modded PS3 consoles or emulators. Now though, it will be offering an online version for its supporters too.
Thanks to a collaboration with the PlayStation Online Network Emulated (PSONE) fan group and the support of players donating their personal Home data from their PS3 consoles, Destination Home will allow players to connect to public and private lobbies again by the end of this year.
Using data from players’ own PS3 has also meant the group has been able to restore a number of spaces from the original app, including the Hub, the Bowling Alley and the Playground, as well as the ability to customise apartments.
It is important to note that Destination Home is not affiliated with Sony in any way and refuses to take donations or any other money for its work, as it’s purely a preservation project rather than a commercial one.
