Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. My first love with the franchise, one of my favorite stories in gaming and an overall brilliant experience, once you get used to the camera at least. I mean, Yahtzee wasn’t kidding with the whole “glued to a passing seagull” metaphor!

Needless to say, this post will include spoilers for Metal Gear Solid 3. So if that’s cool with you, allow me to wax poetic for about 400 words on why I love The Boss…

Not to be confused with Big Boss, another character in the franchise. Or My Boss, a sometimes-real, sometimes-hypothetical being who’s existence depends on my employment.

The Fear Factor… Yes, in a game with a character LITERALLY called ‘The Fear’, it’s barely half an hour into the game till The Boss flips your ass like a pancake and chucks you over a cliff.

You find out The Boss is a former comrade and mentor of your’s, so unraveling the mystery of why she joined a terrorist group is an interesting one.

Lori Alan delivers a great performance in cutscenes too, communicating a calmly ruthless demeanor that contrasts with the bombast of the game’s other villains, like the sadistic Volgin or The Pain, who’s basically Shino on crack!

That’s Twisty: It is later revealed that The Boss and her team joined with Volgin’s army as an attempt to become a living scapegoat, reducing wartime tensions between Russia and the US by becoming a threat to both and ensuring cooperation between the two.

It’s oddly hard for me to articulate why I like The Boss’s near-ending monologue so much (right now, at least), considering she doesn’t have an obscene amount of screen time, but what little there is works incredibly well, to the point I teared up at her death.

And from a writing standpoint, it was revolutionary for me to see a villain motivated by selflessness. One could argue that The Boss pulls off the whole symbolically paternal morally grey warlord shtick better than Thanos, which I have done in the past.

The post The Best Villain In Gaming! The Metal Gear Solid (Girl)Boss first appeared on Get2Gaming.

Friends! Gamers! Casuals! Lend me your eyes, ears, thumbs and other required organs for this (in no particular order) list of my favorite gaming shooters that got me into more high-level stuff as time went on. There are some mild ad-insertions, but all opinions expressed here are purely my own.

This is only limited to game’s I’ve currently played, but hopefully I’ll get into more of the greats later on sometime. Someday. Over the rainbo- LET’S DO THIS!

5: BroForce! To paraphrase Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw of ‘Zero Punctuation’ fame, “I like shooting games, but I’m not very good at them. It’s opposite to the problem I have with blowjobs”. So lucky for me, BroForce is very much an ‘easy to learn, difficult to master’ experience, largely thanks to being a 2D platformer, so if you’ve ever played a Mario game, you’ll pick up the basic controls quickly. The characters being funny parodies of 80s action hero machismo also adds to an overall fun aesthetic and experience. I still howl with laughter every time the narrator shares his thoughts on “CamBROdia” or “RamBRO”.

Fortnite? More Like 4 t’nite: Yes, it can take a little while to get used to considering many players are of a decently high skill, but once you’ve had time to experiment with the different guns and such, there are three main tips I recommend to give you an edge.

First: Make like Obi-Wan-Kenobi and have the high ground! Once you’ve mined some material, flip to the ramp as your default building tool. That way, you can protect yourself, while making it harder for the other bloke to reach up at you.

Second: Make like the US education system and get into shootings regularly! Land at the first semi-crowded area, grab a half-decent boomstick or dom-machine-gun and rinse and repeat until you start getting better. Like percussive maintenance, but for people!

Third? We’ve got a metric fluff-tonne of Fortnite merch, feel free to have a butcher’s at it here!

3: The Last of “Ughs”: The story is a great one and even suitably tense at times, but The Last of Us is also a favorite shooter of mine because the campaign encourages slow methodical strategy. Sure, you can go guns-blazing if you’re good enough and have upgraded weapons, but in a first run-through, you’ll have to rely on stealth and keeping your distance just as much brawls and shootouts. The story’s tutorial sections are also helpful and fit in well with rewarding the player for taking their time analyzing the terrain and taking inventory. 2: Rad-Dad Redacted 2: Electric Boogaloo! Which is to say, yes. The game with the well-written flexible cowboy story and a worship of believable design to the point of realistically-implemented physics of horse bollocks happens to have decent gun-play too. The aim-assist is handy and the kick-back of different guns chunky like Moto Moto drenched in Marinara sauce!

1: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain! In the immortal words of the blokes form Cracked, “it’s like this game was made by a genius toddler”. Aim assist? Boom. A huge array of tools and weapons that’d make Doom Guy blush? You know it. Temporary slow-down-time Matrix powers that make stealth and action equally valid? Oddly specific, but YOU GOT IT! And forget realistically-shrinking horse-balls, your horse’s droppings can act as anti-vehicle mines that distract the driver long enough for you to highjack it for yourself!

Broke: Horse balls.

The post My Top Shooters For Beginners: An Ode to Shooty Bang-Bangs first appeared on Get2Gaming.

Unlike my last Dying Light 2 blog, my decision to write on this, plot twist, ISN’T just because we happen to have Dying Light 2 pre-order copies available (not that I’m stopping you from getting them, wink wink, nudge nudge).

There’s been some mild (by Twitter standards at least) backlash to Dying Light 2 following a recent claim the game will be some 500 hours in length! More on that here. The folks at Techland recently came out with a statement that essentially boils down to “calm your tits, we’re not trying to outdo Persona 5 here! What we MEANT was that 100% completion of the whole game will take about 500 hours, the story campaign (excluding multiple runs for different endings) will be about 20 hours. Will that be enough to please Her Majesty’s Secret Service”?… I’m paraphrasing of course, the day a company says “calm your tits” about literally anything is the day I uncritical my race theory!

Fun fact: According to the official Dying Light 2 Twitter, 500 hours would be the approximate time it’d take to walk from Warsaw to Madrid.

More specifically, the Dying Light 2 team have given the following approximations:

• 20 hours to complete the main story.
• 80 hours to finish the story AND all side quests.
• 500 hours to “max out” the game with all “choices and endings, checking every place on the map, every dialogue and finding every collectible”.

So, why DID I choose to talk about this? Well, sit down and strap on, it’s story time! There’s this one small-time not-too-well-known indie gaming bloke you might have heard about? By the name of… checks notes. Hide E.O Couchiema? Kyjama? Kojesus? Ko- Okay, I’ll stop! Long story short, Metal Gear Solid games. Solid franchise, varying degrees of storytelling quality, always hilariously over-the-top even at the worst of times… Then Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes happened, where on launch, folks essentially paid 40 quid for what amounted to one 15-30 minute level, presumably because Konami felt like giving some cheeky foreshadowing of how they’d rather sabotage their own business than carry on making video games (though with that attitude, probably for the best they’re sticking to making Pachinko machines).

That mildly-quirky recap of the situation’s my way of saying “well hey, better too much than too little, oi oi”.

The stealth games have been taken down due to an issue emerging with the historical footage used in-game

Konami announced today that it will be taking down games Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 after the company faces licensing issues regarding the historical footage used in both games.

The games are being temporarily taken down from digital storefronts and it is unknown when the issue will be resolved.

Metal Gear Solid

The takedown of Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 is the original release and every digital release that includes those two games, including Metal Gear Solid HD. Konami released a statement regarding the issue.

It is unclear what historical footage Konami means exactly, or whether it’s a collective bunch of footage that is causing the problem, but there’s a lot of footage from the Cold War, for example, used within the games.

The infamous games publisher Konami is set to become the new flower of Scotland. Responsible for a variety of legendary franchises, including Castlevania and Metal Gear, they have announced it will publish Cygni: All Guns Blazing. How is this related to Scotland though, I hear you ask? Well it appears the new arcade-style shoot-em up is being developed in Scotland by new studio KeelWorks. How exciting.

Based in Edinburgh, the KeelWorks website states they intend to “create high quality and fun entertainment experiences with specific focus on video games, high-end 3D animation, visual-effects, and music composition”. Previously, their founders have produced work across film and animation, with game director Nareg Kalenderian even having worked at Pixar. It wasn’t on Brave by any chance?

It should be noted that this experience will be particularly important as the game intends to be a “twin-stick vertical scrolling shooter hyped with cinematic flare”. Konami’s other franchises have given us some spectacular moments, and without a doubt we’re sure Cygni will deliver too. Check out the intro trailer down below:

Konami and KeelWorks: The New Deadly Duo?

Could this be the start of a special relationship? Founder and CEO at Keelworks LTD, Meher Kalenderian, certainly seems to think so.

“As a small indie company, KeelWorks was in need of an investment to grow its team and dedicate its full attention and time to the development of its first venture, Cygni. Of all the publishers we spoke to, our communication with Konami was different from the start and it stood out among the rest. With a long and wide-ranging history of work on classic shmups, Konami immediately recognised the direction in which Cygni was heading and decided to bet on its potential outcome.”

What Is Cygni: All Guns Blazing Actually About?

From what we’ve heard, the game is undoubtedly  going to be a blast. It is described on Steam as being  “An unrelenting onslaught of eye-popping visuals, ear bursting soundscapes and mind-melting action makes Cygni the vanguard for the next generation of shoot-em ups. Outgunned, outmanned and out on your own, plunge into a sky full of hell in a last-ditch battle for survival.”  If that hasn’t got you intrigued by now, I don’t know what will.

Keelworks will be hoping Konami’s name will hope them get similar sales to their other franchises. The main games in the Metal Gear Solid series have consistently got over 6 million sales worldwide. Moreover, Castlevania: Lord of Shadows also managed to rack up an impressive 1.77 million sales. If Cyngi: All Guns Blazing can get anywhere near these figures both companies will be extremely happy.

Cygni is set to be released on PC in 2023, and the official website does note that the team will “consider other platforms in the future”. Announced last year, it’s clearly been in development for sometime. As Konami already have an action-packed 2022 lined up, we’re excited to see what the publishers will unfold. Major Japanese publisher Konami is reportedly making a comeback next year with some of its biggest franchises

According to VGC, Konami is set to make a huge return into the gaming industry with major franchises that have been dormant for a good few years.

The Japanese publisher is one of the largest in the gaming industry, however, has been lacking some new releases for their biggest titles, such as Castlevania, Silent Hill, and Metal Gear Solid, but that is set to change thanks to an anonymous source that spoke to the UK based gaming news source.

Konami’s Return

Over the past few years, Konami has decreased its output of console games and turned its attention to Pachinko gambling games in Japan (something very fun and very very addicting so kudos for them). However, the company has stated it has had a recent restructure and is set to bring back its biggest franchises in various ways.

The first in the lineup is a new Castlevania game, described as a “reimagining” of the series. Castlevania has already made a comeback recently with the Castlevania Advanced Collection for the Nintendo Switch (and soon to be other consoles), yet the last, new Castlevania game that was released by Konami was in 2014 with Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2. Castlevania has always been a popular title, yet since then, the vampire hunting franchise has gotten bigger thanks to the Netflix animated series first released in 2017. The new game is stated to already be in development at Konami, with the support of external studios.

It is also said multiple games for the Silent Hill franchise are currently in development at various external development studios. The last game from the main series published by Konami was Silent Hill Downpour, released back in 2012. The news of this project came earlier in the year, but also carried a lot of speculation since the team at the independent studio Bloober did not deny nor confirm what the team was working on. There was also another rumour that Japanese video game designer Kojima could be working on one of the many new games, yet it has been confirmed to be false.

Another franchise Konami has a new game in development for is Metal Gear Solid. Metal Gear Solid has also not received a new game for some time, with the last title being Metal Gear Solid: Survive, released back in 2018. It is said that gaming developer Virtuos is working with Konami to bring the project to life, along with the remasters of the Metal Gear Solid games for modern consoles. The developer has recently worked on the Switch ports for franchises such as Dark Souls, BioShock, and Battlefield. It is said that the new project will be centred around Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, which will go down well with fans of that particular instalment.

So, a busy year is in store for Konami. The Japanese publisher has told VGC that we can expect to see all of these publically showcased in major shows next year- the company had to pull out of E3 2021 due to timing issues, but it seems it’s ready to come back swinging into the industry with all these hefty instalments lined up.

Metal Gear Solid – The Movie

The Metal Gear Solid film has now hired a writer. Excitements!

Sony Pictures’ Metal Gear Solid film has now found a writer, and it’s the up-and-coming screenwriter Jay Basu! He has only a few credits, but he did co-write Monsters: Dark Continent for Vertigo Films, which is in post-production. Universal Pictures, however, has recently signed Basu for it’s push to reboot it’s glorious catalogue of those all too familiar and classic movie monsters! 

This film is being produced by Avi and Ari Arad, along with Jordan Vogt-Roberts as it’s director. Plans for the Metal Gear Solid film have dated back to 2012, and the concept as a whole has been in discussion since 2011. A release date has yet to come light, so keep your eyes peeled for any updates on this enthralling new venture!
