SOLAR ASH Pre-Order on Epic Games Store, Fans Wait for PS5, PS4 Pre-Orders

Since Heart Machine Entertainment pushed back SOLAR ASH’s original release date, they’ve now announced that there are pre-orders available on the Epic Games Store for Windows PC, many suspects that PlayStation Pre-orders will soon be available as there has already been a listing on the PlayStation Store France.

Solar Ash, developed by Heart Machine is a fast-paced, action-adventure platformer. So far it’s known for its vibrant graphics and scenery and fast-paced gameplay involved with the unique aesthetic style of the characters, it is a sequel to the pixelated game Hyper Light Drifter. PlayStation has described Solar Ash as a “Journey through a surreal, vivid and highly stylized world filled with mystery, high-speed traversal, endearing characters, and massive enemy encounters.” I’m not surprised, Solar Ash is an exciting must-have on wishlist type game.

Solar Ash Release Date

Solar Ash’s official release date is the 2nd December 2021, which has been clearly stated on the Epic Games Store and PlayStation Store France, while it has yet to be uploaded anywhere else, we can only hope that Solar Ash will be released on PlayStation internationally on the same date. The price is roughly around £30, which is to be expected.

The PSVR exclusive game is making its way to PC in the new year…

IO Interactive has announced its hit game (full pun intended) Hitman 3 will be receiving a whole bunch of updates that fans can expect to see at the start of 2022.

The biggest of these updates includes the VR version coming at the start of Hitman 3‘s second year.

Hitman 3 VR

Hitman 3 VR came out exclusively on PSVR when the game first came out at the beginning of this year. Yet the video that accompanies IO Interactive’s Year 2 announcement blog, features clips of Hitman 3 VR being played with both an Oculus Rift S and Valve Index.

The PC VR experience looks more immersive than the PSVR version as that version only supports the DualShock 4 gamepad and its limited motion controls, meaning players can’t even use the more intuitive Move controllers with it. It hasn’t been stated when PC users can expect the VR version yet, however full technical details, including the platforms that IO Interactive supporting will be revealed before Hitman 3 Year 2 starts on 20 January 2022.

Other updates IO Interactive announced include adding a series of new maps, storylines, and modes next year, along with the permanent addition of Elusive Target Arcade mode and support for ray-tracing on PC.

It was also announced that Hitman 3 has become the most successful game in the series. With over 50 million players already this year, the dramatic conclusion to the World of Assassination trilogy that started in 2016, has a score of 87 on Metacritic and is only looking upwards with its new content being released at the start of the new year.

A look into Venba, the Narrative Cooking Game

At the Wholesome Games Direct 2021 in June, ‘Venba‘ developed by Visai games was showcased as a part of Wholesome Games live stream. Visai games have yet to come out with a official date for Venba’s release, but in the meantime we are able to view their trailer and keep up to date through their Twitter and Steam page about the Venba’s development, every step Visai Games takes us on truly feels like we are part of the family and the community.

What Kind of Game is Venba?

Venba is a narrative cooking game set in the 1980s, developed by Visai Games.  The main character is an Indian mother who immigrates to Canada, upon doing so, her recipe book gets damaged. Players will learn how to cook various dishes with the mother and restore old, lost recipes from the Indian tradition. The story delves further into topics such as relationships, loss and family. We get to learn of the cultural aspects that comes with Indian food and its dishes. It isn’t just your average cooking game, Venba is touches on topics to do with life, family and more.

It’s wonderful to have a Narrative cooking game that brings in the cultural aspect of the each recipe and ties it back to individuals who can relate to immigrating to a foreign country,  especially for those who weren’t born in their home country and may not know much about their ethnic background.

A little storyline to each recipe and every level is nice, we are not just learning how to prepare a meal, but we are also learning how food and love brings people together.

Venba’s Game Development

On Venba’s Steam page, Visai Games update those who have followed their wishlist and those who happen to come across the page to keep up with the game’s development. This aspect to their development, offers a real sense of love and community, in a way…makes us feel as though we are part of the journey, they hold our hand and take us through so we can understand more about the gameplay, the wonderful characters, such as Venba and Paavalan and the fantastic illustrations.

Visai Games’ most recent update for October features the dish Idli’s. Visai Games goes on to describe how Idli’s is made “from steaming idli batter (made from rice and urad dal) and are a prevalent breakfast staple in South India.” and continued to mention that it didn’t feel right to make a game about Tamil cuisine without adding Idli’s in.

This level in particular ties in with characters Venba and Paavalan who are concerned about their new life in Canada, wondering what the future hold for them. Visai Games mentions that the scene ties in perfectly with the choice of recipe and that they are excited for us to play.

Voice of Cards releasing this Thursday 28^th October

Voice of Cards was fully announced at Nintendo’s Direct Streamed on the 23rd of September. The Nintendo Direct featured other games, such as Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Bayonetta 3, Splatoon 3 and but most importantly, Yoko Taro’s newest masterpiece, Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars (VOD or Voice of Cards for Short) brought to you by Square Enix. Yoko Taro has also worked on previous games and is very well-known known for his work on the NieR and Drakengard series. However, Yoko Taro is only one of the masterminds that bring his work to life.

What is Voice of Cards?

Voice of Cards is a tabletop RPG, as described by Square Enix themselves “The story follows a self-proclaimed hero as they set off to slay a recently awakened dragon” The game is presented in the form of a tabletop RPG, the gameplay being narrated by one known as the gamemaster. The trailer doesn’t reveal much and neither does the Twitter account, except a few words from Square Enix this week during the countdown towards the game.

– 3 days to go – “Three is the magic number! Dizzy symbol Not long until you are introduced to Melanie and can find out more about her grudge with the Dragon in #VoiceOfCards The Isle Dragon Roars.”

– 2 days to go – “Unlock character and enemy stories as you make your way through your quest and fight monsters.”

Square Enix has been very subtle about what they show their viewers, they want the players to go in without any expectations and just enjoy the game for what they dish out to them. They have shown little gameplay, but not nearly enough to pull out a judgement card.

Should You Get Voice of Cards?

Well, it depends if you enjoy story, reading and narration. If you enjoy thinking strategically during gameplay. If these are all a yes, then this game is for you.

Personally speaking, Voice of Cards feels like it will be a masterpiece and I could tell from just playing the DEMO. The writing is fantastic and the way it’s been executed is a great way to draw you in. Not only are you welcomed by the game master, but the game master also informs you that the ‘journey’ in this game of cards will be a dangerous one. However, there’s something that makes you want to continue and once you’re in, you feel as though you HAVE TO commit, you have to finish what you started.

The soundtrack is beautiful, but that is to be expected. Square Enix has always been good at working with people who know how to make amazing soundtracks, especially with the NieR Series where the soundtrack has been described as ‘God singing’.

There’s a lot to expect from Voice of Cards and tons to unfold. It’s certainly worth a try and for the price, we can’t complain.

What is system shock?

“System shock” is, or at this point was, a series of PC First person RPG’s which would serve as the progenitor of the “Immersive Sim” genre. While these days the series younger brother “Bioshock” may be better known, “System shock” should not be overlooked.

In “System shock” you play as a nameless hacker who, when trying to breach security on a massive mega corporation, is recruited by said mega-corp to help Remove all “Ethical Constraints” from the AI SHODAN. SHODAN is a part of the Citadel Space station. After the hacker wakes up from a cryo-sleep he went into, it turns out that (predictably) SHODAN has gone rogue and is now attempting to murder you and all humanity. Because we learnt nothing from Skynet it seems.

The original game is… rough to say the least. Even back at launch in 1994 the game was criticised for playing like a motherboard BIOS. These days you can pick up the enhanced edition by Nightdive on steam or GOG, which features a number of enhancements such as Native widescreen support and Mouse look. Yep, the original game had tank controls. 90s PC gaming everyone.

Both System Shock and its sequel where incredibly successful, however after the original studio “Looking glass” folded the rights became a mess. Hence Looking Glass’s successor, “Irrational Games”  chose to not even try to consolidate them and just Set about making a spiritual successor in Bioshock, which actually plays like a video game and sold way better than any of the system shock games.

The future of the franchise

The rights where finally dealt with in 2013 when Nightdive where able to get ahold of the rights and put out the afford mentioned enhanced edition. They are currently working on a Full remake of the first game, which has a demo out now.

As well as that, Another studio, “OtherSide” is currently (at least theoretically) working on system shock 3. I say theoretically because the publisher, Starbreeze, nearly folded recently and the studio has been acquired by Chinese company Tencent.

Among all of this, it has recently been announced that a TV show is in the works at the streaming site “Binge”, who specialise in Video game adaptations and that you have never heard of.

This wouldn’t be out of nowhere either. In an interview with Deadline, Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick said “I’ve always believed that a live-action adaptation of System Shock would be the perfect medium to retell the harrowing story of Citadel station and its rogue AI that subjects the crew to unimaginable horror,”

“System Shock” and “System Shock 2” are available to purchase now on Steam or GOG, with the gog Versions being more advisable due to being more up-to-date and coming with some fan-patches pre installed.

Recently, the Modding team Known as SoMNst Released a 37 minute video showing the latest update to their “No VR” mod, an add-on to the critically acclaimed 2020 entry in the legendary “Half-Life”. The mod aims to make the game playable without the need for a VR headset.

Half Life Alyx Released on the 23rd of march, 2020, 13 years after the franchise’s last instalment “Half-Life 2, Episode 2”, which notoriously ended with the shocking death of beloved side character and father of player companion Alyx, Eli Vance. “Half Life: Alyx” itself was a spin off, set before mute theoretical theorist Gordon Freeman was re-inserted into the world by the extra dimensional G-man at the start of Half life 2. The story Follows Alyx Vance as she works to establish a Resistance against The Combine, an interdimensional alien race summoned to earth during the resonance cascade event of the original 1997 Half-Life.

The Half-Life series has always aimed to be on the cutting edge of games technology. The original game, released in 1997, was a huge leap forward for narrative in video games, and especially in the first person shooter genre, with subtle world building and environmental storytelling at the forefront of the experience. Its sequel, released originally in 2004, was a technological marvel, introducing real time physics simulation to the world of gaming, as well as some truly phenomenal facial animations that still help the game look Spectacular today, almost 2 decades later. Alyx continued this trend, being one of the most deep and content rich games for VR to date, with the game dumping the predecessors action tone and instead relying much more on horror to guide the experience.

However this reliance on VR technology has left many unable to experience the game due to the costs of owning such a device. This is where the no VR mod comes in. The mods goal is to remove the need for a VR headset and motion controls. Within the 37 minutes of in-development footage released on September 25th, Mod developers SoMNst show off some of their solutions to make the game work from a more traditional first person perspective. 

For example, very early on in the game you are given a number of pens and an eraser, and while in VR you are able to write on the windows of protagonist Alyx’s hideout. The mod works around this functionality by snapping the pen to the point on the screen where a gun would be held in a normal FPS and then snapping it to the window on a left click. The Demo Footage illustrates this by using these pens to carefully draw an image of the series Protagonist Gordon Freeman. 

In another instance, A door that would normally require the act of the player physically grabbing it with their VR controller to open, has been replaced with a hand icon that responds to a left click, similar to games like “Amnesia” and “SOMA”. The mod is still in development. No final release date has been stated by any of the developers and the development builds are not currently available to the public. However the footage does look very promising and with any luck it will not be long until you are able to play the game with a mouse and keyboard yourself. Half-Life: Alyx is available right now from Steam.

The Witcher fans could have banded together to buy a house

The Kickstarter for the The Witcher: Ronin – A Hard Copy Collector’s Edition Manga smashed its original goal within a matter of hours. That didn’t stop fans from continuing to pledge, though. The Kickstarter ended with a whopping €678,036, that’s exactly £579,580… and 27 pence. A whole 750% of the original goal.

Irresistible rewards and gorgeous art promised to Kickstarter pledgers no doubt were the root of its success.

If you’re wondering why fans continued to donate even after the goal was met, a quick gander at the rewards on Kickstarter will tell you why. All Kickstarter pledgers of the lowest tier have been promised a copy of the manga, as well as a postcard with the variant cover artwork. If you shelled out another €15 euros, you’d get a poster as well.

20 dedicated fans pledged €150 to get all that, plus a hand drawn sketch by artist Hayata. It’s honestly a pretty sweet deal, hence it was limited to 20 backers max.

One lucky sod got themselves the €1,050 pledge with a hand-drawn black and white cover by Hayata – wow. I think they deserve to have the Witcher fan bragging rights for life.

In addition, there were several selectable add-ons including a tote bag, sculpture, and pins.

This exciting take on The Witcher series looks absolutely gorgeous, and I’m so excited to see Geralt in a completely new environment. The Kickstarter edition will include 55 extra pages of content: 45 of side-stories, and 10 making-of pages. You might have missed the Kickstarter, but you’ll at least be able to purchase the manga when it drops in January 2022.

I’m already fairly confident that this will be another Witcher masterpiece!

Soon you’ll be able to jump into the detective’s brilliant mind himself once more in Sherlock Holmes Chapter One, Frogwares latest interpretation of the infamous character. The release for the title is November 16th for PS5, Xbox Series X and PC; although there is no release date for the previous generation of consoles currently but rest assured, it is coming to them as well.
This time, a change of scenery for Holmes as he heads to the Mediterranean Island of Cordona where he spent most of his childhood, for his latest crimefighting escapade.

Frogwares developers have stated that they want to provide fans with some back story into why and how Holme’s mind is the way it is and have specified that the character is only 21 here. The questline, based around the detective endeavouring to learn what occurred in the lead up to Sherlock’s mother’s untimely death.

One curious fan called Bartek Madziar asked,

“How big is the game going to be and how many cases will it cover?” Frogwares response gave immense detail, “There are five main quests in the game, they are all connected through one continuous story, and we also have more than 30 side quests, and some of them are as big as the main ones.” It seems the game is more expansive than previous instalments from Frogwares. The answer continued, “Also, I’d say it would take around 12 to 15 hours to beat the main story, and maybe 40 to 50 hours if you want to see everything there is in the game.”

The size sounds immense and a story you can lose a lot of time in, but another answer re-stated the story is centralised around the death of Sherlock’s mother whilst being able to peel off into side quests as you like.

Recent announcements from the developers have made clear that the PS5 DualSense controller’s technology is utilised to its potential with some staggering use of the haptic feedback. The vibrations will play a part in leading you in the right direction to solve the crimes before you, and they describe it as Sherlocks “gut feeling” to make sure you’re heading in the right direction. In addition, the trigger will have resistance whilst firing a weapon adding to the game’s immersion. Finally, the controller will also feel the hand-to-hand combat, even sensing the breaking of the enemy’s bones (which some may want to turn off) through the DualSense 5.

Frogwares vision for the Sherlocks tales never disappoint, and their latest chapter looks like it will hold up to that reputation.

Developers Pixpil Are Releasing Eastward on the Nintendo Switch & PC The 16th September 2021

It’s about time, I’ve been waiting for Eastward ever since seeing it in the Wholesome Games Direct during E3 2021, Indie Live Expo . If you don’t know the Wholesome Games is a another gateway to knowing the best Indie Games out there, they frequently upload trailers to upcoming indie games this year. That being said…let’s have a quick look at Eastward.

What Is The Eastward Indie Game About?

Eastward is a pixelated, aesthetically pleasing adventure game, developed by Pixpil. Society is collapsing and the human population is decreasing. A ‘deadly toxic presence’ has spread across their land, destroying everything. As said by Pixpil themselves “Escape the tyrannical clutches of Sandfill’s subterranean society and join Eastward’s unlikely duo on an exciting adventure to the land above! Discover beautiful yet bizarre settlements and make new friends as you travel across the world by rail.” If you’re curious, have a look at the game trailer below.

This beauty has been getting a generous, yet painful countdown by Pixpil. Many of us nervously sit there, waiting for it’s release. However, during the painful countdown, they’ve offered 10% off Pre-orders. Not only that but, if you Pre-ordered on the Nintendo Switch like I did, then you will see that the game has automatically downloaded to your system, which means you can play the game as soon as the 16th hits at midnight in Japan, which is our 3pm UK time.

Now, I know that next-gen games with amazing graphics get a lot of love, but pixelated games need love too. Especially when the dialogue and story stands strong, memorable and teaches you a lesson somewhere along the way. My personal opinion is that pixelated games and 2D games at that, are just as good as 3D games with realistic graphics and slow-mo combat.

The soundtrack and the nostalgic speech bubble sounds sold me. Eastward and onward with playing…Eastward! The game truly captures the feeling of a dying economy and a slowed down community, you feel a little hope, grasping onto it and trying to escape the future doom of society.
