The EDM artist and DJ is hosting a Sonic-themed concert at the end of the month to honour its anniversary

From Kirby music to Sonic music…

Sonic has already had a spectacular year so far. For its 30th anniversary, everybody’s favourite blue hedgehog received a Minecraft DLC, a LEGO set, confirmation of a new Netflix show, Sonic Colors: Ultimate and more recently, became the first non-Capcom IP to receive a DLC in Monster Hunter Rise.

Yet it’s still not enough to celebrate the impact Sonic has had in the gaming industry, and EDM artist and DJ Steve Aoki will be honouring Sonic in a virtual concert dedicated to the SEGA franchise.

Sonic-themed Concert

Steve Aoki will be hosting a 60-minute set on November 30 at 8 PM GMT as another celebration to honour Sonic’s birthday. The virtual concert will be streamed live on the official Sonic the Hedgehog YouTube and Twitch channels for fans to tune in from around the world.

The setlist will consist of Steve Aoki’s original songs, as well as fan-favourite classics from Sonic’s 16-bit era to the present day and will take place in a virtual environment featuring various landscapes from Sonic games including the Green Hill Zone and Chemical Plant Zone.

If you’re wondering if Aoki is right for the job, he’s what he had to say regarding what Sonic means to him:

The best Sonic game is definitely the OG Sonic the Hedgehog. That’s the game that started it all for me. That’s the game I was most obsessed with, and I just remember putting it in the Genesis console and just rocking out.

“My favourite song from Sonic the Hedgehog is definitely Stardust Speedway. That’s why I remixed it: when I hear it, it brings me back to when I was a kid playing the game. – Steve Aoki, Behind the Scenes.

Steve Aoki’s virtual concert will be the second musical performance to celebrate the 30th anniversary after SEGA hosted a 90-minute concert on Sonic’s actual birthday.

Don’t miss the Sonic-themed virtual concert on November 30!

A new Kirby arrangement from The 8-Bit Big Band featuring Button Masher has been nominated at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards

Something a little different today as this news was certainly unexpected, especially as I watched it happen in real-time. On Tuesday, the 64th Annual Grammy Awards announced the nominations from all the music released in the last year and the adorable pink hero we all know as Kirby has a shot at winning.

Kirby has already been in the news recently thanks to the announcement of the 3-D platformer game, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and now he could be the first video game character to be responsible for winning a Grammy award.

Meta Knight’s Revenge

So, obviously, Kirby isn’t the one that made the song, but he is the inspiration. The song nominated is a classic song from the Kirby franchise performed by The 8-Bit Big Band featuring Button Masher. It’s an arrangement of “Meta Knight’s Revenge” from Kirby Super Star which was released on the SNES and created by Charlie Rosen and Jack Silverman.

It was nominated for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella category alongside 4 other arrangements. As for the song in question, The 8-Bit Big Band’s arrangement maintains the same iconic melody that made the original so famous, yet takes advantage of it being performed with a live band. It provides a much smoother, groovier take of the melody. You can watch The 8-Bit Big Band and Button Masher work their magic with the song down below.

The 8-Bit Big Band is a full-sized jazz orchestra consisting of 25+ people, that was formed to celebrate some of the best musical themes written from various video games from all consoles. Other video game franchises they have covered include The Legend of Zelda, Metal Gear Solid 3, Portal 2, Luigi’s Mansion, Animal Crossing, Super Mario Odyssey and a tasteful rendition of the Wii Shop Channel Music but it’s Austin Powers. It’s truly worth checking out their channel if you have yet to do so.

The only other gaming music to receive a Grammy Award nomination in the past was Journey in 2012 for its soundtrack, so here’s to hoping Kirby and The 8-Bit Big Band featuring Button Masher be the first to win a Grammy Award.

“Have you ever paused a game just to hear the music play?”

At last! Now THIS is a huge passion of mine.. Who is with me?!

A documentary about the impact on video game music, both cultural and personal (and aptly named The Player’s Score), has managed to reach it’s Kickstarter funding goal of $24,000 three days before their end date! Well done to them! This funding milestone happened on Tuesday.

A group of independent film makers and students, who are the film’s producers, really want to capture the vast phenomenon of video game music from the likes of well known composers, cover bands and chiptune artists. “Have you ever paused a game just to hear the music play?” is a line stated on the project’s Kickstarter page.

A couple of the artists lined up so far are composers such as Austin Wintory (who composed for Journey) and Jake Kaufman (who composed for Shovel Knight). Star Bomb and The Megas, who are cover bands, are also lined up for the project.

The Player’s Score, which is set to be released sometime in the Spring of 2015, will be given out to those who pledge $20 or more to the project. It’s also not the only video game music documentary out there.. Beep: A Documentary History of Video Game Music and Sound has also been successful recently and funded by Kickstarter.
