Bittersweet for CD Projekt Red…
Cyberpunk 2077 was famously removed from the Playstation store amidst its catastrophic launch, riddled with bugs and glitches.
On release, CD Projekt Red was forced to launch an almost immediate refunding programme due to the enormous backlash they received over the state of their game. Although each version of the game was not without problems, it was evident that most problems were faced by current-gen console owners, which, unfortunately for CD Projekt Red, was what the majority of their pre-order customers consisted of.
After what was arguably the biggest retail delisting yet, Sony has finally re-added the game back onto its stores. However, it isn’t exactly being welcomed back with open arms. Interestingly, Sony has placed a warning on their digital storefront stating that it is still not recommended on current-gen consoles. The storefront warning is as follows:
“IMPORTANT NOTICE: Users continue to experience performance issues with this game. Purchase for use on PS4 systems is not recommended. For the best Cyberpunk experience on PlayStation, play on PS4 Pro and PS5 systems.”
The latest patch (1.23) on consoles appears to have stabilised the performance on the base PS4 since launch. However, as seen by Sony’s warning, it still isn’t without problems. They have maintained a 30 fps refresh rate in some of their busiest scenes, but this came at the cost of reductions across the board for PS4 owners. Things such as pixel resolution, level-of-detail (LoD) draw, texture fidelity, number of objects on screen have all been dialled down (along with other rendering drawbacks).
The PS4 Pro version will have a more stable 30 fps target, whereas as confirmed by CDPR, both next-gen consoles offer 60 fps refreshes. The limited 60 fps refresh on the next-gen consoles is due to both consoles currently running the game in backwards-compatibility mode, as an actual next-gen update of the game is yet to be released. An upgrade for the next-gen consoles is currently slated to be implemented towards the end of the year, adding further performance tweaks.
#Cyberpunk2077 is now back on the PlayStation Store.

I must say that the state Cyberpunk was in for current-gen consoles upon release was truly a shame. I was lucky enough to play the game on PC, which had fewer issues (though not perfect), and wondering about CDPR’s futuristic metropolis, Night City, is truly remarkable. Hopefully, CDPR can continue to work on the game and get it to a state where everyone can experience the immersive world they created bug-free.
