Using Franz Ferdinand’s iconic track This Fffire to showcase the talent working on the animation, the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners opening credit was shared during the Trigger 10 Year Anniversary & Announcement Panel at Anime Expo 2022.
Alongside the opening credits, Studio Trigger also revealed the first episode of the series to those at the show and confirmed that English voice actor, Zach Aguilar of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba’s Tanjiro Kamado, will be providing his voice to the main character, David Martinez.
David Martinez is a street kid who’s just trying to survive in a futuristic city obsessed with power, glamour and body modification. Having everything to lose, he chooses to stay alive by becoming an Edgerunner—a mercenary outlaw also known as a Cyberpunk. The 10-episode series will also focus on a Netrunner named Lucy.
Staying true to the aesthetic of the game and the cyberpunk genre as a whole, Edgerunners includes neon colours, flashy outfits and bright lights. Just like the game, explosions of blood and brutal fight scenes will also be highlighted.
A recent official clip revealed that part of the story will take place in the same location as The Pickup mission from Cyberpunk 2077. A mission where V and Jackie have to pick up the robot spy-spider from the electro-eyed Maelstrom gang. In the clip we see a similar negotiation take place, although the cargo appears to be a blue-haired human girl instead of a robot. The girl is taken, guns are pulled, arms are cut off, and widespread chaos unleashes.
The anime is written and produced in partnership with CD Projekt Red, and directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi who has worked on projects such as Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill and Promare. It also features an original score composed by Akira Yamaoka.
Netflix released the initial Cyberpunk: Edgerunners teaser trailer on the 9th June. Receiving raving reviews by fans who are highly anticipating the anime release.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is set to be released on Netflix in September 2022.
CD Projekt claimed in April 2022 that Cyberpunk 2077 has sold over 18 million copies since its December 2020 release. Spending eight years in development and costing roughly $174 million, Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most expensive games ever made. They also confirmed they’re currently working on a major Cyberpunk 2077 expansion featuring a new storyline.
“We believe in the long-term potential of our newest release; thus, one of our priorities for 2021 was to improve Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay,” he said.
“We are now satisfied with the game and encouraged by the gamers’ reception of its next-gen console edition, which launched this February. Altogether, we’ve now sold over 18 million copies of Cyberpunk 2077.”
Cyberpunk 2077’s post-launch plans were massively skewed due to the game’s troubled release, the title finally received its first piece of DLC in August 2021.
The following month, CD Projekt said nearly a quarter of its development staff (160 people) were working on Cyberpunk 2077’s first expansion.
In comparison, just over a third of the company was working on Cyberpunk 2077’s new-gen console version, which was released this February, as well as support for the original game.
Details of the expansion have been leaked online, pointing to inaccessible areas from the main game will be opened up for the first time.
The Combat Zone, an area of the Pacifica region which was mentioned in the main game but remains locked, is said to be opened up in the new expansion. The zone was previously featured in the Cyberpunk 2077 art book. Additionally, the Sports Dome will finally be opened – another large, inaccessible area from the main game. It’s said that this area will house one of the new main missions from the expansion.
The leaked files have already circulated on social media, and also reveal some details about the new content of the expansion. The DLC will reportedly follow Songbird – a character previously datamined from the main game and features a finished model.
It’s claimed that the files aren’t complete, but its believed that the expansion will include several new side missions, as well as seven main missions. According to users who have seen the leaked files, the expansion will also include fixer quests, world stories, and new world encounters.
Surprisingly, there seems to be not much added dialogue featuring Johnny Silverhand, the character played by Keanu Reeves. Several instances of him being silenced by another character have appeared, including Songbird. Whether this was due to Reeves being unable to record new dialogue is currently unknown.
However, the DLC does appear to change parts of the dialogue in the game’s ending sequence. Although the changes aren’t substantial, events in the DLC are referenced by the playable character and Johnny.
The expansion is currently targeting a 2023 release date.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
