If you play video games on PC, you use Steam. The service has the largest lineup of any PC storefront, ranging from indies to big triple A games, and has an incredibly expansive feature set, including user reviews, Inbuilt mod support, Community forums for games and a simple to use friend system. Against its main competitors (CDPR’s GOG and Epics Epic Games store) steam is riding high (although in the case of Epic thats because that particular storefront is a trainwreck kept alive by fortnite and children with moms credit card. GOGs good, use gog more.)
2022 started with a new concurrent players record for steam, with the service reaching 27,942,458 users last week at its peak. The previous record was set back in november, which sat at about 27.4 million users. Reasonably it would be assumed this record would take some time to break, but as it turns out it has already been smashed.
SteamDB, a database site for Valves Platform Client, reported that at 9 AM ET on Sunday, Steam reached a concurrent playerbase of 28,230,661 players at one, nearly 300 thousand more than the previous record.
Industry analyst Daniel Ahmad observed that stream has seen a large amount of growth since the start of the Covid 19 pandemic, and they have not slowed down yet.
