Sony confirm three new colours for the PlayStation 5 console will release starting next month!

The PlayStation 5’s outlandish design caught the eye of many when it released in November 2020 but a lot of the player base who were lucky enough to get their hands on the ultra rare machine wanted more choice with the colour of the console. In January, they dropped Midnight Black and Cosmic Red with the new three colours finally on the horizon. PS5 owners can swap the face plates themselves to give it a new fresh look.

Alongside Midnight Black and Cosmic Red, the three new colours are Nova Pink, Starlight Blue and Galactic Purple. The revolutionary DualSense controller is also getting a makeover matching the colours that the PlayStation console is getting. But unlike the console the new coloured controllers will reportedly come with improved parts to prevent stick drift and users can check a code on the back of the controller to verify that it has the new parts.

Sony is yet to reveal special edition custom designed PlayStation 5 consoles whereas the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro over their lifespan had uniquely designed consoles around the flagship games of the time such as Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, God of War and Marvel’s Spider-Man. But with options for PlayStation 5 owners starting to become more vast their is an increasing worry that the shape and design of said console could change over the next 18 months like the PS4 and PS4 Pro having multiple design changes over the 7 predominant years of it’s life. Some gamers do want to see a change in console design as it’s novel, impractical and rather large design in comparison to it’s main competitor the Xbox Series X, fans want to see a slimmer more sleek design to appear in the future. Controversy has been lingering over the choice of colours as when the PlayStation 5 console was released many fans were begging for third party accessory makers including Dbrand to provide black face plates to replace the white ones. Sony are known for not working well with others as they sent a cease and desist to Dbrand forcing them to stop selling them immediately aggravating many fans, it’s taken them 18 months after release of the console for them to finally move into the market of giving us a choice of colours.

Have you been able to get your hands on the PlayStation 5?

Do you like the new colours?

There are a number of recent and upcoming games, films and tv shows that use various cultures and mythologies to drive their stories. This series aims to explore the relationship between an IP and its surrounding mythology. Today, we look at the upcoming God of War game, exploring the character of Odin and how the use of mythology in the God of War series might shape his character design.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for God of War.

God of War Ragnarok is set to be released in 2022. Since the trailer was released last September, we’ve seen images of both Thor and Tyr, key characters in both the Norse and God of War universes. But one character we haven’t seen yet, one whose effects permeates the entire world, is Odin.

Odin’s appearance in Norse Mythology

Odin in Norse Mythology is the leader of the Aesir. Known as the ‘Allfather’, Odin was the god of wisdom, death, war, magic and prophecy, poetry and healing. He is often depicted as an old man.

Odin’s search for wisdom is famous. Stories of how Odin ripped out his own eye, stabbed himself with his own spear and hanged himself from the World Tree, Yggdrasil, in order to gain knowledge of runes are well-known. Accompanied by his ravens, Huginn and Muninn, and armed with the gift of prophecy, the one-eyed god oversaw all of Midgard and Asgard.

We can expect, therefore, to see a one-eyed Odin in God of War. In the game, Mimir says how Odin tried to gouge out his own eyes after drinking from a drugged well, but that Mimir “managed to stop him before he finished the job.”

We can also expect to see Odin’s spear. Given to Odin by the Sons of Ivalnir – often known as Brokkr and Sindri – the spear is called Gungnir. It is not stated whether this was the spear with which Odin stabbed himself, but it is the spear with which Odin fights Fenrir, the Giant Wolf.

Odin will probably be accompanied by his two ravens, Huginn and Muninn in God of War Ragnarok. The two all-seeing ravens have already made an appearance in the trailer – probably acting as spies for the Allfather.

Finally, we may see some signs of his hanging. Having hanged from the tree for nine days, it seems likely Odin would have felt the effects of the rope, even if he could heal himself.

Character traits in God of War

Tattoos

Tattoos have a clear importance in the God of War franchise. Kratos’ red tattoos are a memorial to his brother, Deimos, and remind him of who he has lost. Baldur, covered in tattoos, is constantly reminded about his curse by those runic tattoos. The tattoos glowed an icy-blue when he attacked Kratos. In the promotional image of Tyr, we see he has a hieroglyphic tattoo on his arm, hinting towards his travels to Egypt that we heard about in the 2018 game. In Thor’s concept as well, we see Norse runes adorning his chest. Clearly, then, these tattoos tell a story about who each character is and the Norse Runes seem to have some magical abilities.

As one who hanged himself to learn of the Runes’ power and meaning, Odin will probably be adorned with several. These may just be used to tell his stories or they may have some magical abilities in the game or in combat. In fact, with his knowledge of the runes, what other weapon does Odin need?

Or perhaps Odin will adorn himself in the Nordic knotwork art-style that peppers the God of War design. Having hanged himself to learn of the Runes, perhaps Odin will boast of his victory over death by adorning himself with images of the ropes that bound him to the World Tree.

Scars

Scars also have an importance in God of War. The most prominent scar is Kratos’ abdominal wound from when he was stabbed by Zeus. Although Kratos can heal himself, he retained the scar – suggesting it be a constant reminder of his past. In addition, at the end of God of War, Kratos uncovers the seared scars of the Blades of Chaos, stating “I have nothing more to hide.” The scars are a reminder of who he was and we see Kratos accepting this past – with the promise to be better.

With Odin, we may see the scar from his spear or from where he ripped out his eye. But we may also see the scars of when he hanged himself – which leads us to the final point.

Kratos and Odin: A Parallel

During 2018’s God of War, we learn constantly of Odin’s tyranny and poor parenthood. He is a terrible husband and a terrible father. Kratos, meanwhile, is learning how to be a father and trying to learn from his own mistakes to teach Atreus to be better. Through the examples of the Allfather, Kratos learns what to avoid.

We also see the parallels between Odin and Kratos through their relationship with fate. Kratos claims “fate is another lie told by the gods. Nothing is written that cannot be unwritten.” Mimir replies, “on that, brother, you and the Allfather may just agree.” Both Kratos and Odin are trying to change their fate. Kratos is trying to stop the curse of son killing father and Odin is trying to stop Ragnarok. Both gods need to believe that fate can be changed.

It may be, then, that we see these parallels reflected in the character design of Kratos and Odin – with both characters fully embracing their past.

However, with no news of when the game will be released this year, we will just have to wait and see.

God of War 2018 is available at Go2Games and is available on both PS4 and PC. God of War Ragnarok will be available on both PS4 and PS5 upon release.

Hard at Work

Ragnarok was originally given an ambitious 2021 release date. Then, in mid-2021 the Sony Santa Monica Studio announced that they would be delaying the game till 2022. However, since the reveal trailer dropped in September 2021, the studio have not shared anything new about the game.

Barlog – the director of God of War 2 and 2018’s God of War – reassured fans that the silence was due to everyone having their “heads down, hard at work.” Nonetheless, he guaranteed that when Santa Monica have something that’s ready to be seen, they will immediately share it. Cory Barlog has moved aside from director to producer for Ragnarok, with Eric Williams taking over. Williams has worked as a on all of the God of War games so far, specialising in combat design.

Long Road to Ragnarok

Amid the Covid pandemic, it seemed ambitious that the game would be ready for a 2021 release. Then, in late September 2021, Christopher Judge announced that he had had surgery that delayed the game. Judge, the voice and mo-cap actor for Kratos, tweeted that in 2019, he couldn’t walk and had to undergo several surgeries. Judge insisted that the studio gave him “nothing but love and support.” Finally, in April, Thor actor, Ryan Hurst tweeted his visit to the studios. Although no context was given, it might suggest he was still recording Thor’s part. However, Barlog’s message marks the first official press release on Ragnarok since the trailer last year.

While the developers at Santa Monica Studio have been working on the game, the internet has filled the silence with worries over whether it will be delayed once again. However, people at Santa Monica are still insisting it will be released in 2022. Santa Monica’s animation director, Bruno Velasquez assured fans on twitter that “Ragnarok is coming this year.”

https://twitter.com/brunovelazquez/status/1516797475645911042

Shrouded in Secrecy

With all the secrecy surrounding this game, we still have little idea of what the game will contain. However, due to the game being based upon Norse mythology, players have been able to make some predictions and theories on what we could see in Ragnarok. You can read some of those theories here.

Ragnarok in Norse mythology was the final battle between the Aesir and the Giants, where the gods meet their downfall and the world is wrought with natural disasters and great flooding. Of the Aesir involved in that battle, Santa Monica have only released images of Thor and Tyr so far. The vicious All-father Odin, that was pulling all the strings in the 2018 game, is still shrouded in mystery. Nonetheless, you can read about what he may look like here.

Until the studio is ready to share something though, we will just have to wait and see.

God of War 2018 is available at Go2Games and is available on both PS4 and PC. God of War Ragnarok will be available on both PS4 and PS5 upon release.

I mean, the most powerful bald guy in gaming played by the most powerful bald guy in real life? Match made in heaven right there.

Meet the Crew: Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby of The Expanse (sci-fi mystery thriller) will be working with showrunner Rafe Judkins (Wheel of Time). Cast information is currently unknown, though there will seemingly be reveals of different roles in the coming months. Check our store if you want in on the mainline God of War series for yourself!

Wanna know what else is unknown? When the game will take place and what it will explore (not that I’m complaining… for now). The God of War soft reboot-remake-re-sequelathon is already incredibly cinematic and boasts the gaming feat of having fewer cuts than a Disney-dubbed Studio Ghibli film after being mailed a Samurai sword by Miyazaki.

Alternatively, the show could take place in the nebulous time period between Kratos killing Zeus and Atreus being born. Alternatively alternatively, hitting similar story and character beats as the first few games without feeling shackled to any one story could work well, considering how Arcane did gangbusters with that formula… Alternatively alternatively ALTERNATIVELY-

Honestly? I think the folks at PlayStation should take the Cuphead route and adapt stuff that has less of a story-heavy leaning. Between this and the 2023 Last of Us show coming up, they’d have to be at least somewhat better or differently good in a lot of ways, considering they’re both essentially playable movies.

On a related note, the car-battling destruction simulator that is Twisted Metal will also be getting a TV adaptation. I’m no Twisted Metal lore-daddy, but I do know it’s claim to fame consists of having a fugly killer clown mascot and more mutually-beneficial explosions than the Fallout games!

What’s new in the gaming world this week then? What games have you all been having fun with recently? It looks like Steam has the answers to those questions, as they have just released the top ten best selling games for the third week of January. It’s certainly safe to say, there are some surprising results.

The big news is that God of War reaches the top of the chart for a second week in a row. Why is this so important though, I hear you ask? Well, it’s actually quite monumental because it’ll be the first PlayStation-published game on PC to hit No. 1 two weeks in a row.

Previously, PlayStation releases such as Days Gone and Horizon Zero Dawn have gone close to achieving the feat, but subsequently fell off. So this achievement should definitely not be understated!

God Of War Tops Impressive Steam List

Selling over 19.5 million copies on PS4 before arriving to PC, God Of War has been something of a phenomenon in the gaming community. Hopefully, the game will meet the 20 million mark soon! The next God of War game, Ragnarok, is scheduled for release later this year on PS5 and PS4.

Check out the full list of games down below. If there’s any game that tickles your fancy, well head on over to our store right away to pick them up from us instead! Go on, you know you want to.

God of War PC update 1.0.2 has been rolled out by Sony Santa Monica Studio and Jetpack Interactive

After the bulky first update for the game, the second patch for the PC port of God of War is minor and should download automatically the moment that Steam client is launched. The release notes only mention two bug fixes alongside a couple of new error messages. As for the fixes, this update addresses an issue that prevented users with an Intel 12th Gen CPU to boot the game when the integrated GPU was enabled.

Down below you’ll find the official release notes, as supplied by Jetpack and Sony Santa Monica.

God of War PC Update 1.0.2 Release Notes

Patch Notes

Bug Fixes

Fixed an issue where users with Intel 12th Gen CPUs could not boot the game without disabling their integrated graphics card

Fixed a UI issue that was causing a small memory leak

Other Changes

Added an error message for when saving the game fails due to a missing “Saved Games” folder or a related permissions issue

Added an error message for when a GPU stops responding. This error is often due to a driver issue or instability from overclocking

“We are continuing to investigate the memory leak issues and the rest of the Known Issues. If you are experiencing these problems, submitting a ticket greatly helps us gather all of the information we need to properly access each one”, the development team writes on the game’s official Steam page.

God of War is available globally now for PC and PlayStation 4/5. Sony is currently working on the game’s sequel, God of War Ragnarok, which is set for an unspecified release date, later this year on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

Between this and Vaatividya’s coining of “s’horsery”, fingers crossed that 2021 becomes the year of mish-mashing random words with sorcery! Find the Swordcery trailer here.

The game is being helmed by Don Thurakichprempri and Mike Henriet, animators on the 2018 God of War reboot. Both have expressed desire to work on a game with full creative control, hence Swordcery, which was inspired by dream of Thurakichprempri about a knight using a giant pizza cutter as a weapon.

“The next day I hit up my buddy Mike and told him about it and we just thought it’d be so cool to see that circular blade spinning and unleash a devastating cutter blade projectile that would look like it was slicing the ground” – Don Thurakichprempri to GamesRadar

Swordcery is an action Roguelike, meaning that the majority of in-game locations will be procedurally generated. The player character will have access to “hundreds” of swords. The plot so far goes thusly:

A giant blade plunges into a mountain range, stealing the Earth’s power as smaller blades start raining down like in that episode of Adventure Time! You play as Colt, basically your standard Hero’s Journey 101 bloke who’s an unassuming hero that takes the call to action upon realizing he can control the raining swords! Taking some inspiration from Hades (psst! which we have), the game has a light permadeath mechanic, meaning that with every death, you get booted back to the beginning and have to work your way back up to where you were before (though Swordcery does let players keep any credits and permanent upgrades).

As for gameplay? The collectible in-game swords fall into multiple class types, the main ones being Titan Sword, Katana, and Dual Swords. Each weapon type has access to unique light combos and a single specialized heavy attack. As the game’s title would imply, the Swordcery magic system also means each sword has a unique magic power. These powers can include a boomerang throw that would impress Sokka, summoning a bolt of lightning that would make Zeus blush and unleashing portals of fire and brimstone onto unsuspecting foes if you’re in a more biblical mood! And as far as applicability to the Christmas season goes, you can even summon a ring of protective snowflakes to deck the halls (as well as your enemies) in the face!

Play the free demo on Steam and donate to the Swordcery kickstarter if you want to support the project further! Currently planned for PC release first, with Switch and console versions coming after completion.

Thurakichprempri’s favourite swordcery ability is The Fed Executioner, which lets players trap enemies in boxes like a reverse Solid Snake!

God of War’s PC port is being developed by Canadian studio Jetpack Interactive

In a statement provided to Arstechnica, Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed that the Canadian studio Jetpack Interactive is creating God of War PC, with supervision from original creator Sony Santa Monica.

Jetpack is a port house and support studio which has worked on Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare II, Dark Souls PC and various NBA Live games. It also did engineering and UI development support for NBA Live 16. The studio’s only fully-standalone porting effort is PC release of Orcs Must Die! Unchained to the PlayStation 4. Curiously, one Jetpack Interactive programmer lists God of War’s sequel, Ragnarok, as a project he’s working on. This could be a mistake or perhaps related to the ongoing work on the PlayStation console versions.

The characters Angraboda and Atreus in the game God of War Ragnorok.

In October, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan has stated that he desires to reach a larger audience with its games in a keynote during GI Live: London. He hopes to aspire to reach hundreds of millions of players and rival the reach of movies and music.

“I hope that PlayStation 5, and I really believe the PlayStation 5 will be Sony’s biggest and best and most loved PlayStation yet. I hope that will happen,” Ryan said when asked on his hopes for the future.

“I would also like to see a world where the games that we make at PlayStation can be enjoyed by many tens of millions of people. Perhaps hundreds of millions of people. Right now success with the current console model, a really great PlayStation hit you’re talking ten or 20 million people being able to play that game.”

These comments are surprising considering Sony’s track record of staying committed to console exclusives.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed plans to release God of War for PC on January 14, 2022.

We here at get2gaming have formerly reported on the news that sony are porting 2018s “God of War” (dad of boy) to PC in January next year. However it has just come out that, despite Sony Santa Monica overseeing the project, it is being developed by Jetpack interactive.

Jetpack are a studio you probably haven’t heard of by name before, however they are far from new at the PC porting game. They have left their mark on the PC ports of games such as “Dark Souls”, “NBA LIve 14, 15 and 16”, and also the port of ”Plants VS Zombies: Garden Warfare”. They have also provided Engineering support on “Dark Souls” and “Plants Vs Zombies: Garden Warfare”, although their ties to “Dark Souls” PC are questionable as that particular port was Notoriously shoddy and was only really sorted out with the release of the Remaster in 2018. Finally, they helped out with the UI on the former Mentioned NBA.

It is a little strange that Jetpack where picked to do the port, as Sony own the highly acclaimed port studio “Nixxes software”. This is even more concerning given that, when it launched on PC in august of last year, the game suffered from some serious performance issues that took a number of patches to resolve. It would be presumed that sony would not wish to repeat this mistake, so a less experience studio like Jetpack is a strange decision.

That having been said, I for one will be excited to play God of War when it launches on PC early next year. The PS4 has a bit of a bad habit of sounding like a Jet engine and being able to play a game without being taken out of the experience by heathrow airport behind my tv is much appreciated.

The Pc version of the game will be able to run in 4k ultra wide with an unlocked frame rate. The game will also support Nvidia’s “Deep Learning Super Sampling, which dynamically upscales the games resolution while you play, letting the game look better than ever. Along side this the game will also support reflex Low Latency technology, which will let the game run smoother and feel more responsive.

Sony has promised the game will have “Robust” controller support and keyboard mapping customisation, which is a strange promise given that Keyboard Remapping is a given on PC games, rather than some sort of “Feature” to be advertised.

God of war is joining “Horizon: zero Dawn” and “Days Gone” on PC. the former two games have been available on PC for some time now and, at least in the case of days gone, have actually done better on PC than they did on console. Alongside God of War, there are also plans to bring “Uncharted: legacy of thieves Collection” to PC, which includes remasters of Uncharted 4 and Uncharted the lost Legacy. However this game has no fixed release date as of yet.

“God of Wars'” Sequel, “God of War: Ragnarok” is set to come out at some point in 2022, making this PC release a good excuse to experience the story of the first game in preparation for the next game in the series.
