Handheld gaming is certainly on the rise in recent years. It has always been around thanks to the Nintendo DS and heavily underrated PSP, but ever since the Nintendo Switch was released, more and more companies are now releasing their own handheld consoles.

We currently have the Steam Deck, Playdate, Analogue Pocket, and Taito Milestones coming out in the next year, but there might be another contender thanks to what Qualcomm and Razer are working on.

The Razer Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 Developer Kit

So how will Qualcomm and Razer be doing making this new handheld device? The answer is the Razer Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 Developer Kit.

The Razer Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 Developer Kit will be utilising Qualcomm’s new gaming chip, Snapdragon G3x. It is a gaming-optimized variation of its premium mobile phone chips that will evolve phones into larger-screened, faster-performing, TV-connected dedicated game systems. The Razer Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 Developer Kit is set to be an Android OS-based handheld gaming device that runs all Android games and streams games on the cloud or from your console/PC.

Source: Qualcomm

Yet, it is important to note the device is only in the early stages and is currently only made for developers in mind. However, it will hopefully spark the development of software and future hardware.

Gaming performance specifics have yet to be specified by Qualcomm, yet the technology company has promised more consistent performance and higher frame rates on these processors and emphasised the TV output with a high frame rate as an additional perk.

The Razer Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 Developer Kit is being created with the goal of inspiring developers and manufacturers to expand their current footing in mobile gaming in mind.

Would you want another mobile device specifically for gaming? Let us know in the comments below!

Valve released a detailed FAQ for its upcoming handheld console and revealed its thoughts on exclusive games

While the Steam Deck‘s launch date has been delayed by two months, Valve is still gearing up for its inevitable release by releasing more information regarding the portable handheld console.

The company have made it clear that the Steam Deck will not be receiving exclusive games and will be sticking to allowing players to take their PC libraries with them wherever they go.

Valve’s Steam Deck

The Steam Deck has been designed with one goal in mind: portable gaming based on players’ Steam library. It is set out to provide comfort as well as convenience. without compromising any game’s performance. There might be some games that are more optimisable than others, but the Steam Deck Compatability System will make it clear to users which game those will be, and those that might require additional steps by the user to operate.

Yet Valve has made it clear the Steam Deck is more of a portable PC than a new handheld console.

No, that doesn’t make much sense to us. It’s a PC and it should just play games like a PC. – Valve’s FAQ

Unlike the Nintendo Switch, whose performance varies between its portable and docked states, the Steam Deck will perform the same regardless of its playing state, making it playable the same way in whichever state is it being played on. And just like gaming on PC, players will still be able to customize their graphics settings to get their desired performance, yet most games will start with the intended graphics settings out of the box.

Valve has made it very clear from the beginning what the Steam Deck would be advertised as and the company is sticking to that by not offering exclusive games for the Steam Deck.

If you want to read more of the detailed FAQ, you can read it here.

Fans can now get excited for the release of the extremely, long-waited Analogue Pocket as it ships next month!

Retro gaming has been making a comeback in recent years thanks to new gaming devices being able to run older titles. Some of these devices require an emulation in order to do so, but one device that doesn’t need one is the Analogue Pocket.

Announced back in 2019, the Analogue Pocket has been a hugely anticipated release since and after many delays, fans that have pre-ordered the handheld device now have a shipping date.

Analogue Pocket

The Analogue Pocket is an upcoming FPGA-based handheld game console designed and manufactured by Analogue, Inc. It is designed to play games designed for handhelds of the fourth, fifth and sixth generation of video game consoles with no emulation required. Instead, it uses the original cartridges of retro games including over 2,780 games for GameBoy, GameBoy Color and GameBoy Advance, as well as games for the Game Gear. Neo Geo Pocket Color. Atari Lynx and more.

Since the first announcement, the Analogue Pocket has been delayed 3 times due to the global pandemic affecting the video game industry like so many other consoles are facing. Valve’s Steam Deck and Panic’s Playdate are two other handheld devices that have faced delays are now being pushed back to 2022. Yet gamers that have pre-ordered the Analogue Pocket won’t have to wait until the new year to receive years.

Analogue announced that players can expect pre-orders to start shipping on December 13, with delivery to be expected between December 14 to December 30.

Pocket is shipping on December 13th. An email has been sent out to everyone who has pre-ordered with details on address updating and more: https://t.co/Y5W6Qg7WVP pic.twitter.com/e7rJwhJikz

Analogue has opened up an alternative shipping option for those that are unable to receive their console during this time. The company has stated it will put people’s orders on hold until January 3, 2022, and the Analogue Pockets will then be shipped out. However, if you need to change your shipping option, then you need to do so before November 28.

The handheld console has been delayed to 2022 due to battery and CPU issues

Panic released an update regarding its handheld console Playdate which was expecting its first batch of pre-orders to be released at the end of 2021. Sadly this is no longer the case and the company has had to push back its release date.

People that have already pre-ordered the Playdate will have to wait ’til 2022 now to receive the handheld console due to issues that came up with the batteries and CPU.

Causes for Playdate Delay

Panic released an update via Twitter and an email to its pre-order adopters about why the Playdate is now expecting a release in 2022.

Hi! If you've pre-ordered a Playdate, check your email for a copy of the "Playdate Owner's Update #1".

There's bad news (a battery tragedy means Late 2021 units are now Early 2022, see email for your timing) but also good news (Pulp+SDK release dates!!)

Thanks for reading it. pic.twitter.com/03BUolZetY

— Playdate (@playdate) November 11, 2021

The company stated that the first issue that arose was the battery life. Panic received the first 5000 finished Playdate units and began testing them for the team to realise the battery life was not what they were expecting.

Playdate’s battery is designed to last a very long time, and always be ready for you, even if not used for a while. But that was not the case. In fact, we found a number of units with batteries so drained, Playdate wouldn’t power on at all – and couldn’t be charged. That’s a battery worst-case scenario.

Panic then made the difficult, expensive decision to send all 5000 Playdates back so the batteries could be replaced and it luckily worked out for the company, giving it the battery life it wanted in the first place.

Another issue that occurred was the CPU Panic wanted to use for the Playdate was out of stock and would be for another 2 years, so the company had to replace it with a more widely used CPU. This links back to the global chip shortage all consoles are facing right now, causing Valve’s Steam Deck to delay its release date to 2022 too.

Panic did reassure the people who’ve pre-ordered the device that their place in the line hasn’t changed. The first 20,000 orders will now receive their units in early 2022, and orders from 20,000 to 50,000 will now be sent out in the second half of 2022 instead of earlier in the year. The Playdate sold 20,000 units incredibly quickly, so there will be a lot of people waiting for the second batch of Playdates.

While they have already sorted out some of the bigger issues with the device and how Anticheats work with the proton layer, there are still a few games which may not work at all on the steam deck. To that end, valve has today shown off its new “verification system” for steam deck

The system will work as such: Games will achieve 1 of 4 ratings, which are as follows:

“Verified” means that the game works on Steam Deck with no problem. Just download and play, and (at least theoretically) nothing will go wrong. Verified games work both with the console controllers and the onscreen keyboard.

“Playable” means that the game will run on steam deck, but may need some extra TLC and Config customisation to actually work as it would on pc.

“Unsupported” means a game will not run on a steam deck, no matter what you do. Notably, the demo game used for this from Valve is “Half-life: Alyx” all but confirming a lack of VR support for the handheld system.

And finally, “Unknown” means that Valve dont know if the game works or not because they haven’t checked. These games may technically fall into any of the 3 other categories, but you will have to work that out yourself.

Anyone knowledgeable about PC gaming may have noticed that these categories heavily resemble how Emulators show what games can be played on them, and thats not a coincidence. At its core, the steam deck is a PC emulator for linux, just one that comes on a fancy handheld device.

This is @ondeck, the official Steam Deck Twitter account. We'll be sharing production updates, posts from developers who have dev kits out in the world, and videos of games that the Steam Deck team has been playing. Let us know what games you’d like to see on Deck! pic.twitter.com/IhS0fM1NHL

— Steam Deck (@OnDeck) October 14, 2021

Valve have also told Developers that they can now manually submit their games for verification, although they have also said that it might not always be necessary. “Important” games will be automatically reviewed by Valve without the developers submitting them. What “Important” means in this context is up for debate though.

Valve have even said that, even if a developer doesn’t want their game on the steam deck, there wont be a way to hide the game from the systems inbuilt store.

The Steam Deck launches this December. You can reserve yours now from Valve directly.

From October 27th, customers will no longer be able to use a credit or debit card, or PayPal, to buy digital content or top up their PlayStation Store wallet directly from their PS3 or Vita.

If you want to purchase something for your Vita or PS3 from the store, you will have to top-up from another device such as your PC, mobile device, PS4, or PS5. PlayStation Store gift cards, product vouchers, and subscription vouchers will still work on both consoles.

While it’s not the biggest inconvenience in the world, it does reintroduce anxiety about the future of SONY’s handheld device. The Vita has a small but dedicated user base that still enjoys taking their PS games on the go.

Personally, I can’t go without my Vita. It’s the one platform that has a vast selection of otome games. One of my favourites, Bad Apple Wars, is available exclusively on the Vita.

Although AKSYS are republishing many of their games on the Nintendo Switch, I still prefer the feel and display of the Vita. The vibrant OLED screen shows games the way they were meant to be viewed.

However, with the Switch OLED hitting the markets, the Vita will lose that advantage. Still, there’s many otome games and Japanese exclusives that will only be available on the Vita for the foreseeable future. Not to mention, it can be more cost-effective to snag a game on PS Vita instead of the Switch. There’s also the PS exclusives to play on Vita. I’ve been replaying the Jak and Daxter trilogy on my Vita, and it’s a lot of fun.

I see the Vita as a console that was ahead of its time at release. It pretty much flopped outside of Japan, while Nintendo kept a steel grip on the international handheld console market. If the Vita has been released in the last few years with a better marketing campaign, I reckon it would have been much more successful.

Sometimes, you just want to lie in bed with your handheld console with YouTube on autoplay in the background, instead of sitting up in your gaming chair in front of the TV. Call me lazy if you will, but I game to relax.

Clearly, I’m not the only one with an attachment to my Vita. In March, Sony announced plans to close the PlayStation Store on PS3, Vita, and PSP last summer, sparking massive backlash; The company retracted its statement. The PSP store did indeed close in July, but the PS3 and Vita stores remain active.

I wish the Vita many more years of gaming activity! Don’t get eclipsed by the Switch just yet.
