Xbox Series S has outsold PlayStation 5 in Japan for the first time and that is a massive deal!!!

As we all know the home of PlayStation is Japan, Microsoft has never really concentrated on the Asian market as their competitors Sony and Nintendo have always dominated on that side of the world as it is their home. But in shocking news, Microsoft’s cheaper slimmer platform the Xbox Series S had outsold Sony’s premier console last week for the first time. The fact the Xbox Series S is cheaper and more accessible than all the other next-gen console has helped sales considerably.

Inside the week of May 9th – May 15th, Xbox Series S had outsold the PlayStation 5 by 4,000 units, an incredible achievement for Microsoft. The Xbox Series S climbs above both PlayStation 5 editions of the console. This is largely down to the production issues that Sony has been struggling with ever since the PlayStation 5 launch back November 2020, globally fans have had their problems getting their hands on both consoles down to said production issues and scalpers buying up multiple units at a time.

Unit sales in Japan between May 9th – May 15th for all consoles

• Nintendo Switch Lite – 9,011

• Xbox Series S – 6,120

Xbox might’ve made the news this week but overall it doesn’t come close to Nintendo, as expected they dominate in Japan week after week with their assortment of handheld consoles (Switch OLED, Switch and Switch Lite). The unique machine has been a phenomenal success for Nintendo selling 20 million units in Japan alone making at only the 5th console to do so (behind the Nintendo DS, Nintendo Game Boy/Colour, Nintendo 3DS and the PlayStation 2). So Xbox’s recent success doesn’t and probably will never come close to how successful Nintendo has been in Japan over the last 20 years.

Microsoft have no sign of letting up in their journey to win over the Asian market with their renewed direction in Xbox Cloud Gaming. Japan has always favoured mobile gaming so access to Xbox games on iOS and Android could win over some of the hardcore Nintendo fan base.

Globally, Xbox Series X/S have been widely successful as from Microsoft’s financial results from last year they showed Xbox hardware revenues were up 166% compared to the same period last year, which might not come as a surprise since Xbox One sales were tailing off and an increase in revenue from the gaming side with Xbox’s content doing very well.

For the unfortunately unfamiliar: Persona 5 is a story-based game developed by Atlus. Famous on release for it’s viscerally pleasurable jazz-rock soundtrack, fresh take on turn-based Pokemon-style combat, brilliant story and all-around dripping with more style than Roadman Shaq doing the fusion dance with Sidney Poitier (rest in power king). One story mode playthrough averages at 100 hours, so it’s basically like a playable anime season… Or about one one-trillionth the length of One Piece! Speaking of manga, Persona 5 has one of those, find out more on that here!

Needless to say, I guess you could say I am a bit of a Persona 5 fan.

I finished my first playthrough around 2018 or 19, not long before I’d go to university. This was on account of not wanting to have to balance education, exercise, a part-time job and social time with their real-world equivalents! Cut to around 2020, I then did most of another playthrough to see character storylines that I didn’t explore my first time around.

Now it’s January 2022 and Persona 5 Strikers has come to PS+ for a month. I was aware that Persona 5 Strikers was made in the style of the Dynasty Warriors games, so in lay terms, the gameplay would be less turn-based strategy and more hack-n-slashy. What I wasn’t expecting was for Strikers to replicate Persona 5’s style to such a faithful degree: The slick art style, the menu interfaces, enemy health bars being shaped like hearts, the visual-novel audiobook-meets-comic cutscenes, all that good stuff. After the tutorial combat mission, the story scenes kick in and it’s all self-aware to a sacharine degree, with the in-game cast from Persona 5 reminiscing about how it’s been a long time since they hung out together. Business as usual so far, then comes a point where the main cast are talking about how they’ve been getting along with their lives… Then Ryuji, the team’s resident himbo, casually asked “what about you? How’ve you been holding up”? I then preceded to laugh out loud maniacally (lol), only to then read the three dialogue responses I could choose from. “Things are pretty nice”, “eh, it’s whatever” or “… I missed you guys”… AND THERE IT IS! That’s the moment I started crying like… Like… *insert comically hyperbolic parallel here*!

So, what have we learned from this? That it’s cool to be nostalgically passionate about something? That being wink-nudgingly self-aware and poking fun at things doesn’t make you immune to feelings? That maybe attempting to monetize real emotions (or the presentation of real emotions if you want to be cynical) isn’t always bad because it’s sometimes entertaining? In the words of Big Joel, “I don’t know, maybe”! At the end of the day, I wrote this because I had fun doing so and think maybe my way of retelling the story could be fun for you folks too.

While players will have to wait for 2022 till they can play the third installment of ‘Splattering People With Suspiciously-Coloured Liquids: The Game’, there are rumblings that Splatoon 3 news may be on the inky horizon!

Don’t worry Nintendo, I promise to keep my theories of implicitly psycho-sexual Freudian undertones in the Splatoon games to a minimum… If I can help it.

As for potential news, we have some finds from Twitter leaker and self-proclaimed Metroid fangirl, @SamusHunter2: ‘Splatoon 3 will get some updates later this year, I know there is at least one artwork scheduled to be released by the end of the year’.  Considering the last Nintendo Direct event was in September, it’s likely we’ll be seeing another update sometime late this December or early next year.

On September 23 2021, 2 new weapons for Splatoon 3 were confirmed by Samus Hunter, alongside information on the game’s multiplayer mode.

Weapons and Tools in Splatoon 3:

• The Splat-Roller will be getting a brand spanking-new sub-weapon mode, ala trick weapons in Bloodborne!
• The Crab Tank: Does what it says on the tin. Comes in rapid-fire and cannon variants.
• The Zipcaster Suit: Like the unholy lovechild of Spider-Man and zoomers, you too can fling your sticky substances around the place to swing around the arena! Tentacles are also involved.

Splatoon 3 Character Leaks: The story mode will be titled ‘Return of the Mammalians’… So like mammals? Was MatPat right!? That the Inkling folk are genetically more Squid than Kid? What in the name of Dagon-

Well, mammals aren’t entirely foreign to the Splatoon universe, Judd is an NPC catboy who mans the multiplayer modes, but I’ve got my eye on you Nintendo, you tricksie little Hobbitses, you… Judd also has a clone called Li’l Judd, so fingers crossed Splatoon 3 has Judd The Creator who soars to inkernet stardom after releasing his hit album ‘Chill Beats To Relax And Splatter Your Friends To’.

A Splatoon 3 trailer shows the Splatoon 2 antagonists, the Octarians, will be returning. They also seem to be rocking a new coat of fur, minus the boots and applebottom jeans of course. Click here for the Return of The Mammalians trailer.

It goes without saying at this point that Cyberpunk 2077 hasn’t had the easiest time with sorting out its bugs and glitches since release, I’m just saying it in case any non-gamers who randomly found themselves here through a tragic string of farcical mishaps involving a Cuban cigar, the Queen’s corgis and a time-travelling oval vampire burlap.

The game’s been getting a steady stream of updates, though even to this day, the developers over at CD Projekt RED are still encountering AI issues that need fixing.

Indie game dev u/Alamoa20 posted in the official r/CyberpunkGame subreddit, pointing out some of the system issues with the Cyberpunk AI.

 ‘When I look at Night City’s Civilians, they’re obviously not finite state machines. They have behavioural trees and a path. […] The problem is that it’s incomplete. There’s no “loopback”, so to speak. They keep walking till they despawn or till they turn around and walk back’ – u/Alamoa20.

Not to get political, but let’s talk about problems with the police: Those AI issues Alamoa20 mentioned above? Yup, they apply to the Cyberpunk police AI. They also spawn behind the player at points in a shoddy way. In short, the systems of implementation for the police are poorly-constructed, need a lot of work and result in unfairly hasty reactions- Just like in real life!

‘No testing was done. Just a placeholder illusion to say ‘Okay, the system is there, at least.’ It’s a very watered down iteration’

CD Projekt RED has confirmed plans to release next-gen versions of Cyberpunk 2077 in the new year for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Shin Megami Tensei V Gameplay Footage – First Impressions

In the last 5 days, Brand New Shin Megami Tensei V gameplay footage has been released. Shin Megami Tensei V was announced at Nintendo Tree House, E3 Brought to you by Atlus for alongside an announcement for when it will be released, which will be the 12^th November 2021, 1 day from now.

At the Nintendo Tree House Event, they had briefly shown the Shin Megami Tensei V trailer, which showcased exclusive Gameplay with the turn-based combat style. However, it wasn’t merely enough for those who know nothing about the series or even enough for fans of the Shin Megami Tensei franchise to truly see what they had in store for the game. The recently released gameplay truly shows what you’ll be getting for your money.

The footage has significant detail and seems to be an open-world game. The art style is very similar to Atlus’s previous games from the Persona franchise and their successful game Catherine (Catherine: Full Body) on the Nintendo Switch.

The graphics seem to look pretty good on the Nintendo Switch recording, but we aren’t sure whether this was taken from a Nintendo Switch OLED where the image would look a little more ‘crisp’ or a regular Switch. The frame rates seem to drop at some points, but fans are unsure if this is because of a fault in the recording or if it is the actual game itself.

Shin Megami Tensei V Soundtrack

The Megami Tensei V’s original soundtracks are also catching the fans attention, fantastic music that’s being compared to the greatness of NieR: Automata and NieR: Replicant. One of the most loved soundtracks is the ‘Shop Theme’ which is where the player finds and meets Gustave for the first time. Beautiful ethereal sounds and a hauntingly gorgeous singer.

The game looks fantastic, it may only be released on Nintendo Switch, but there is a new offshoot called Monark, that will be released by Atlus on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 next year, February 2022.
