The all-new classic Sonic compilation comes out June 23, 2022

A few days ago, we had some speculation that we would soon be hearing more about the upcoming compilation of classic sonic the hedgehog titles. Our prediction that news and a release date would be coming soon, turned out to be true. Sega announced through a new trailer, their website, and on their official accounts, that the game would be coming on June 23rd. In addition to the release date, more interesting details have been confirmed for the collection.

The Developers

As previously announced, the versions of; Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles, in the collection have been re-made from the ground up to support widescreen. As speculated by fans, all four games are running on the Retro / Star Engine, the same one used for Sonic Mania. Origin’s versions of Sonic 1, 2 and CD will be the same as the fan-favourite mobile versions of those games, now on console and PC. In addition, Sonic 3 and Knuckles has been remade for the first time in the Star Engine. The work for this remake was done by Co-Lead Developer for Sonic Mania and the Sonic 1, and 2 remakes, Stealth, along with the rest of the team at his company, Headcannon.

Both fans and the developers seem excited by the prospect of the entire original trilogy, and CD, all at last being available in widescreen, with the best performance and additional features. Whilst the remaking of Sonic 3 & Knuckles has been handled externally by Headcannon, the compilation itself is being built internally at Sega. And there appear to be a number of surprise extra features to be found.

Headcannon is proud to announce that we have been working with @Sega to re-create Sonic 3 & Knuckles for their upcoming #SonicOrigins collection!

This completes the official "Remastering" of the mainline classics and marks our fourth time out with #SonictheHedgehog!

— Headcannon (@Head_cannon) April 20, 2022

Extra Features

The collection boasts both classic modes, and ‘anniversary’ modes of each of the games in the collection, allowing players to choose whether they play the updated versions, or original emulations of the games. Whilst playing in anniversary mode, lives will become a thing of the past, and are to be replaced by ‘coins’. These special coins are said to unlock extra features outside of the main games in the bonus menus. Extras such as concept art, videos, missions that have you tackling certain challenges within the game, and even a mirror-mode where you can play the games flipped.

There is also said to be a ‘story mode’ where players will be sent through the four games in chronological order. From sonic 1, to CD, to 2, and then to 3 and Knuckles (seemingly ending debates over which came first between CD and 2). All new animated cutscenes will punctuate the start and end of each game as well. These animations have been written by the franchises longest running comics writer, and writer for the upcoming Sonic Frontiers game, Ian Flynn. Meanwhile, animation for the cutscenes have been handled by Tyson Hesse and his team. Hesse being one of the individuals responsible for the popular Sonic Mania Adventures shorts released onto Youtube, as well as the far more well received re-design for the Movie Sonic, after the studio scrapped the original nightmare.

Screenshots from the game show that the backgrounds to its menus are charming 3D recreations of the islands upon which the classic games take place. All the extra additions to the presentation of the games, seem to be going a long way to making Sonic Origins more than just a simple collection.

Coming June 23rd

Pre-orders for the compilation have gone live, to mixed reception from the fans. A strange collection of minor cosmetic features have been seemingly withheld from the base game release, only available to those who pre-order or who purchase the Digital Deluxe version. This information was presented to fans through a bafflingly clunky chart to top it off.

Despite this, the collection is still set to be the definitive way to play Sonic the Hedgehog’s most celebrated titles, and will provide an easy entry point for new fans who have come from the movies.

Sonic Origins comes out on June 23rd. In the meantime, the franchise’s last remaster Sonic Colours Ultimate came out last year, and its brand-new open world adventure, Sonic Frontiers is set for release later in 2022.

The Japanese studio is releasing a compilation of its most retro games and it’s now available to pre-order in the West

Retro games, or for some, games from the past, will never die out thanks to video game companies either remastering the games for new consoles or creating compilations of the studio’s games so old and new fans alike can enjoy the games that started it all.

Taito, a Japanese company that created some of the first video games back in the 70s, and a little game that you might know going by the name of Space Invaders, is releasing a brand new compilation game for Nintendo Switch and it has just been announced it will also be released here, titled Taito Milestones.

Taito Milestones

Taito Milestones was announced earlier this year that it would be released in Japan in February 2022, with no Western release confirmed at the time but now that has changed.

ININ Games, who was previously behind publishing Space Invaders Forever, confirmed it would be publishing the compilation in the West.

Taito Milestones consists of 10 retro games from Taito’s repertoire. The compilation will be available in physical and digital form as well as two special editions: Limited Edition and Collector’s Edition.

The Taito Milestones Collector’s Edition will have a limited release of 2000 copies and will be priced at €89.99 (circa £75.99) and the Taito Milestones Limited Edition will have a limited release of 3000 copies and will be priced at €39.99 (circa £33.99). Both will be available to pre-order from November 25 at Strictly Limited Games.

Here are the games confirmed to be in the compilation so far as the 10th game is still yet to be confirmed:

Qix (1981)

Alpine Ski (1982)

Front Line (1982)

Wild Western (1982)

Chack’n Pop (1983)

Elevator Action (1983)

The FairyLand Story (1985)

Halley’s Comet (1986)

The Ninja Warriors (1987)

Taito Milestones will be released in February 2022, yet if you can’t wait that long, Taito and ININ Games are bringing out Space Invaders Forever Special Edition on December 10, just in time for the holidays, and is available to pre-order from our website.

Fans can now get excited for the release of the extremely, long-waited Analogue Pocket as it ships next month!

Retro gaming has been making a comeback in recent years thanks to new gaming devices being able to run older titles. Some of these devices require an emulation in order to do so, but one device that doesn’t need one is the Analogue Pocket.

Announced back in 2019, the Analogue Pocket has been a hugely anticipated release since and after many delays, fans that have pre-ordered the handheld device now have a shipping date.

Analogue Pocket

The Analogue Pocket is an upcoming FPGA-based handheld game console designed and manufactured by Analogue, Inc. It is designed to play games designed for handhelds of the fourth, fifth and sixth generation of video game consoles with no emulation required. Instead, it uses the original cartridges of retro games including over 2,780 games for GameBoy, GameBoy Color and GameBoy Advance, as well as games for the Game Gear. Neo Geo Pocket Color. Atari Lynx and more.

Since the first announcement, the Analogue Pocket has been delayed 3 times due to the global pandemic affecting the video game industry like so many other consoles are facing. Valve’s Steam Deck and Panic’s Playdate are two other handheld devices that have faced delays are now being pushed back to 2022. Yet gamers that have pre-ordered the Analogue Pocket won’t have to wait until the new year to receive years.

Analogue announced that players can expect pre-orders to start shipping on December 13, with delivery to be expected between December 14 to December 30.

Pocket is shipping on December 13th. An email has been sent out to everyone who has pre-ordered with details on address updating and more: https://t.co/Y5W6Qg7WVP pic.twitter.com/e7rJwhJikz

— Analogue (@analogue) November 22, 2021

Analogue has opened up an alternative shipping option for those that are unable to receive their console during this time. The company has stated it will put people’s orders on hold until January 3, 2022, and the Analogue Pockets will then be shipped out. However, if you need to change your shipping option, then you need to do so before November 28.

Footwear company The Sole Supplier made some concept art for a line of retro gaming console-inspired trainers and it’s a pity we can’t purchase them

Like most trends in life, nostalgia is the way forward and gets us reminiscing about the good old days and wanting to relive them through different revivals, reboots, and remakes of entertaining classics. That can be said for footwear, with plenty of companies such as Converse, Vans, Nike, and Puma, collaborating with gaming companies to craft the most nostalgic pairs of gaming-inspired shoes that one can find.

Yet footwear company The Sole Supplier has taken it one step further by collaborating retro trainers with retro gaming consoles in their own Sole Concept titled “Gaming Glam” and have stepped up the game in how footwear brands can make iconic designs for gamers all around the world.

The Gaming Glam Sole Concept

The Sole Supplier released a series of concept designs featuring 80s and 90s consoles paired with trainers like Air Jordan 4s, Adidas Forums, Nike Air Max 97s and Adidas Superstars- with the most modern console used in the collection being the Sega Dreamcast.

The designs are finished to a high standard and have immaculate details that don’t make the trainers feel like they stand out too much as video game merch. The Sole Supplier is known for its Sole Concepts and has done other pop culture designs before, one being in the form of superheroes.

Source: The Sole Supplier

The PlayStation console is designed with a pair of Adidas Forums and the grey slate details match perfectly with the buttons on the original d-pad. The triangle, square, cross and circle buttons on the side of the trainer also add a nice touch of nostalgia and are what make you realise this isn’t an ordinary pair of grey trainers.

Source: The Sole Supplier

The SNES EU console is also paired with Adidas trainers but this time it’s the classic Adidas Superstars. Much like the PlayStation design, the grey slates match perfectly with the d-pad and the coloured buttons are the perfect touch to make people recognise this as the Super Nintendo model.

Source: The Sole Supplier

The GameCube turned 20 this year and it’s a shame we don’t actually have these colourful trainers available to purchase as the purple shade looks incredibly slick and stylish in the Air Jordan design and would be an instant hit for its fans. The additional GameCube tag really brings the whole design together too.

Source: The Sole Supplier

The Sega Mastersystem even gets its own rebranding on a pair of Nike Air Max 97s and the black and red shades blend beautifully well together. The crimson ripple travelling through the middle is certain to catch anybody’s eye yet doesn’t look too outlandish either.

Here’s to hoping something similar will be made sometime soon.

The creators of the C64 Mini have announced their plans to release a new mini console inspired by the Commodore Amiga 500

Retro Games Ltd, who created the C64 Mini, announced its plans to release a new retro classic inspired mini console today and it pays tribute to the Commodore A500.

The A500 was originally released in 1987 by Commodore and became the best-selling Amiga computer of all time with its advanced graphics and sound capabilities at the time.

The Amiga 500 Mini, otherwise known as A500 Mini, will be released in early 2022 at the price of £119.99/ $139.99 / €129.99. The console will come preloaded with 25 classic games that are guaranteed to give players the nostalgia factor, including Worms, The Chaos Engine, Battle Chess, and Pinball Dreams.

A500 Mini

Players will be able to insert a USB stick with their own Amiga ROMS into their A500 Mini and play those too with full WHDLoad support, letting players install Amiga games to the hard disk.

The A500 Mini is set to come with an Amiga-style two-button mouse and a gamepad that is inspired by the Amiga CD32 controller. The keyboard itself isn’t functional because the system is so small, however, players can plug in a standard PC keyboard and use that for games that require it.

As for the games themselves, players can expect to see a lot of retro classics on there. Here are 12 of the games that have been announced so far, with more to be announced later:

Alien Breed 3D

Another World

ATR: All Terrain Racing

Battle Chess

Cadaver

Kick-Off 2

Pinball Dreams

Simon the Sorcerer

Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe

The Chaos Engine

Worms: The Director’s Cut

Zool

The system will also emulate not only the A500’s OCS chipset but also the enhanced ECS chipset of the A500+ and the Advanced Graphics Architecture (AGA) of the A1200. This means that even ROMs of A1200-only enhanced games should work on it. Other features of the A500 Mini include a save game function, selectable 50Hz or 60Hz screen refresh, CRT filter and multiple scaling options.

Will you be taking a trip into the past when this mini console drops?

The 1992 classic, Romancing SaGa, has now been translated into English

At long last, the lot over at DDS Translations have finished full translation for Square’s JRPG – Romancing SaGa. Although, before you download the English translation patch, you will have to have a legally obtained Romancing SaGa Super Famicom ROM file to run the game on your emulator or flash cartridge.

The game was remade for the PS2 in 2005, so you may already be familiar with it. Much of the unfinished and dropped content of the SNES version had been expanded on or replaced.

You can play as one of eight characters, who all have their own storyline and ending. Combat is also turn-based, with some tactical considerations to be found in party formation and advancing with weapon techniques. Exploration is classic top-down and, as you progress, you’ll see locations change and new ones emerge over a period of time.

An interesting fact is that the original 16-bit version of the game was voted as one of Famitsu’s top 100 favourite games of all time.

You can take a look at the game-play below. Did you used to play Romancing SaGa? If so, do let us know what your thoughts are on it being newly translated.

Whilst working at the Computer Center in Moscow, Russian engineer, Alexey Pajitnov, created what would later become one of the most popular video games of all time. The game pieces in Tetris are called “Tetriminos” and are geometric shapes composed of four square blocks each, the objective of the game are to manipulate these pieces, by either rotating it by 90 degrees and moving them sideways. The user must aim to create a horizontal line of ten units without gaps, which will make the line disappear and if the user clears a certain amount of lines the game will enter a new level.

Sounds complicated? It really isn’t, take a look at a video example below:

Nintendo eventually got hold of Tetris and in 1989, brought it to the handheld gaming console, Gameboy.
