Naughty dog have release ten minutes of gameplay from their upcoming remake of “The last of us”, now titled “the Last of Us Part 1”, following leaks that the developers have described as “disheartening, frustrating and hurtful.”

The ten Minutes Feature a gameplay deep dive with the devs who go into how they “went in and Rebuilt the Game from the ground up. An accompanying post on the Playstation blog has confirmed the game can Render at Naitive 4K with a targeted 30FPS, or a dynamic 4K at a targeted 60FPS.

The blog states ““The PS5’s powerful hardware drives a host of visual benefits, from denser physics with tons of bumpables and chipables (bullets can now rip apart concrete and environmental objects) and cinematics now transition seamlessly to gameplay,”

“Motion matching technology means that character animations flow more convincingly, intuitively and realistically; all adding another layer of believability to characters and their interactions with the world.

“Further, AI upgrades mean that characters inhabit the world in a more authentic and realistic way, such as buddy characters navigating cover to avoid enemy NPC sightlines more authentically.”

Naughty Dog have also confirmed the addition of permadeath and speedrun modes, as well as new costumes for Joel and ellie

This reveal comes following leaks showing off the games Intro, Combat and accessibility options. Naughty Dogs vice president Arne meyer responded to this by saying “Leaks really suck, Esp when we’re right on the cusp of an asset drop. It’s disheartening and frustrating to teams who have put their hearts making awesome things for our fans.” T

These thoughts where echoed by Samuel prince, senior editor at naughty Dog who said “They’re extremely hurtful to the devs who work tirelessly to bring you these wonderful games. Public-facing assets take a long time to create, revise, approve, localize, clear legal, ESRB, etc. Be kind!”

Now, with all that said…

WARNING: PERSONAL OPINIONS AHEAD

I do not like how this game is shaping up. On one hand the fact the last of us is coming to PC is great, and the first game is by far the less controversial of the two, But the last of us Part 1 looks like its at best going to be a very mediocre experience and, at worst, is going to be bad.

Lets start with the “4K” claims because I am going to be real I dont think people really understand what 4K means when it comes to games. 4K is a resolution. 4K means the game is being output to your screen at a size of 3840 x 2160 Pixels. Resolution, notably, has *nothing* to do with graphics. It *can*, higher resolutions can facilitate nicer looking graphics, but that really does not matter much. If you do not have a 4K display, then a 4K resolution means nothing. Hell, on PC there is a small but notable argument that Lower resolution CRT monitors are better than higher Resolution LCD monitors because of their faster refresh rate which makes games play better.

I'm seeing loads of people voicing their anger/concern for the remake's gameplay, and that's 100% okay. I'm not here to argue with anyone.

Another thing that has me a little unsure of this release is the accessibility options. Naughty dog have bragged about there being “over 60” Accessibility features in the game. This is, in itself, not bad. More accessibility options are always a good thing. But I would argue that with the recent leaks… these are not accessibility options. A lot of these are dedicated to Lowering difficulty or easing combat or removing puzzles, and personally these are the kinds of “accessibility options” that I really hate. Good accessibility options are Button Rebinding, Colour blind modes, Text to speech, audio descriptive, etc, which are all here, but Fundamentally these should all just be cosmetic so people can enjoy the game. When an “accessibility option” changes the difficulty of a game, then it hurts the integrity of the overall experience. This was an issue in TLOU Part 2 where you could trivialise the entire game using these.

To be clear, again, accessibility features are good inherently. But I know of people who don’t have use of their hands, complete dark souls or Sekiro with their feet. accessibility is making it so that anyone *can* complete a game, not making it so that anyone will.

All in all, graphically the game looks meh, the Boasting of 4K is borderline meaningless, the game looks like its once again going to have any challenge nuked from orbit in the name of accessibility, and all in all this feels like a rushed cash in. they could very easily have just ported the PS4 release of TLOU to PS5 and PC. its still a fine looking game. But instead they decided to do a full “remake” and charge $70 for it.

Friends! Gamers! Casuals! Lend me your eyes, ears, thumbs and other required organs for this (in no particular order) list of my favorite gaming shooters that got me into more high-level stuff as time went on. There are some mild ad-insertions, but all opinions expressed here are purely my own.

This is only limited to game’s I’ve currently played, but hopefully I’ll get into more of the greats later on sometime. Someday. Over the rainbo- LET’S DO THIS!

5: BroForce! To paraphrase Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw of ‘Zero Punctuation’ fame, “I like shooting games, but I’m not very good at them. It’s opposite to the problem I have with blowjobs”. So lucky for me, BroForce is very much an ‘easy to learn, difficult to master’ experience, largely thanks to being a 2D platformer, so if you’ve ever played a Mario game, you’ll pick up the basic controls quickly. The characters being funny parodies of 80s action hero machismo also adds to an overall fun aesthetic and experience. I still howl with laughter every time the narrator shares his thoughts on “CamBROdia” or “RamBRO”.

Fortnite? More Like 4 t’nite: Yes, it can take a little while to get used to considering many players are of a decently high skill, but once you’ve had time to experiment with the different guns and such, there are three main tips I recommend to give you an edge.

First: Make like Obi-Wan-Kenobi and have the high ground! Once you’ve mined some material, flip to the ramp as your default building tool. That way, you can protect yourself, while making it harder for the other bloke to reach up at you.

Second: Make like the US education system and get into shootings regularly! Land at the first semi-crowded area, grab a half-decent boomstick or dom-machine-gun and rinse and repeat until you start getting better. Like percussive maintenance, but for people!

Third? We’ve got a metric fluff-tonne of Fortnite merch, feel free to have a butcher’s at it here!

3: The Last of “Ughs”: The story is a great one and even suitably tense at times, but The Last of Us is also a favorite shooter of mine because the campaign encourages slow methodical strategy. Sure, you can go guns-blazing if you’re good enough and have upgraded weapons, but in a first run-through, you’ll have to rely on stealth and keeping your distance just as much brawls and shootouts. The story’s tutorial sections are also helpful and fit in well with rewarding the player for taking their time analyzing the terrain and taking inventory. 2: Rad-Dad Redacted 2: Electric Boogaloo! Which is to say, yes. The game with the well-written flexible cowboy story and a worship of believable design to the point of realistically-implemented physics of horse bollocks happens to have decent gun-play too. The aim-assist is handy and the kick-back of different guns chunky like Moto Moto drenched in Marinara sauce!

1: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain! In the immortal words of the blokes form Cracked, “it’s like this game was made by a genius toddler”. Aim assist? Boom. A huge array of tools and weapons that’d make Doom Guy blush? You know it. Temporary slow-down-time Matrix powers that make stealth and action equally valid? Oddly specific, but YOU GOT IT! And forget realistically-shrinking horse-balls, your horse’s droppings can act as anti-vehicle mines that distract the driver long enough for you to highjack it for yourself!

Broke: Horse balls.

Unfortunately, it looks like HBO’s adaptation of the hit game will not be hitting screens any time soon.

A recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter had HBO programming president Casey Bloys confirm that The Last of Us is “shooting right now in Canada” but will not be airing in 2022. “We have not announced an air date yet,” Bloys clarified, to the dismay of fans who were hoping to see the show air this year.

The Last of Us began filming in July 2021, and is expected to end in June 2022.

This led many fans to believe that a late 2022 premier could have been possible. It seems, however, that they’ll have to wait it out for another year.

The Last of Us is the first project undertaken by PlayStation Productions.

PlayStation Productions was founded by Sony Interactive Entertainment in 2019, in order to adapt PlayStation franchises into movies and television shows. There will be a total of ten episodes for the first season, and the show will be the first HBO series to be based on a Video Game.

In other news regarding game-based film productions, the Uncharted movie has already premiered in select territories and will be showing in many more countries this coming weekend. With a $120 million budget, the movie adaptation has reportedly generated more than $21 million in its opening weekend. The star-studded cast includes Tom Holland, who is most well known for his performance as Spider-Man.

See? I like Apex Legends and that won’t stop me roasting it over the spit at the prison barbecue, I yearn for true glitch equality! Heck, one time I accidentally tried to heal a bloke who wasn’t my teammate and if that isn’t proof there’s a little glitch in all of us, I don’t know what is!

Cargo Catastrophe! A bug was recently found featuring Pathfinder that allows players to ‘super launch’ themselves when grappling cargo bots. This unintentional mechanic was uncovered by one Redditor ‘‘Dirty_Skirty‘, finding out that while these launches generally end up being enough atomic force to yeet you too far from the inner circle, it can be creatively applied to if you’re precise enough.

“If you jump the second your grapple attaches, you’re guaranteed a perfectly vertical launch”.

And if you’ll entertain a little anecdote of mine, that time I tried healing an enemy player? My teammate was a Pathfinder! Chances are they realized I was a massive noob after that mishap cut their losses before I started shooting myself in the proverbial digital foot any harder.

Glitch Fixes? To my knowledge, none as far as Pathfinder goes, but the folks at Respawn did recently fix a glitch with Bloodhound (whomst we stan).

Glitch Tales… No, not that one: So sit down and strap on for three peculiar tales of glitchy-gaming goodness from your’s truly! And lucky for me, all these issues were neatly fixed with a tap of the retry button.

First up is on one of my Grounded replays of The Last of Us some nebulous time in pre-demic era! There was a section with some bad guys out in the snow that I decided for a specific way to eliminate: Run out back, punch one down, use it as a distraction, run back, stealth two other blokes and unload my clips into the last few guys hunting me like the randy cinephile I am! As I kept dying near that last end of my strategy, needless to say, I was repeating stuff more than Bo Burnham’s song of the same name, so on one particularly attempt, I ran up to a bloke, clotheslined his ass, and immediately shot RIGHT DOWN THE GROUND like:

Next on the chopping block is Sifu: One time while fighting Kuroki and FINALLY getting past her first phase after hours of retries and fiddling with the photo mode, I punched her so hard that when she backflipped away from me, she clean disappeared from the arena on me! Like,it’s bad enough she looks like a literal ghost half the time, but getting left on read by a boss? You think you know a girl. Ain’t that right Sensei Lawrence?

Nick Offerman is an actor and comedian most famous for his role on the sitcom Parks and Recreation, wherein he plays the absurdly manly caricature of All-American excess, Ron Swanson.

Offerman’s casting for the role of Bill in the upcoming HBO TV adaptation of the game was confirmed after the original actor for the role (Con O’Neil from Chernobyl) had to pull out due to scheduling conflicts, according to Variety.

Furthermore, the role of Frank (Bill’s partner in The Last of Us) has been confirmed to be played by Murray Bartlett from the hit show Chernobyl. They will be “two post-pandemic survivalists living alone in their own isolated town”, which is an interesting creative choice considering we never “meet” Frank in The Last of Us game (on account of him being dead and all that jazz). So keeping Frank alive pleases me because it gives the impression the show will be adapting a similar story while also not being afraid to change things to give a distinct identity from the games.

Casting Details:

Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian, Game of Thrones) and Bella Ramsey (Hilda, Holmes & Watson… and also Game of Thrones) are confirmed to be playing The Last of Us protagonists Joel and Ellie. Click here for our past article going over the first images from the upcoming HBO adaptation.

Nico Parker from the new Dumbo will be playing Joel’s daughter Sarah. I’ll take this moment to say that the “I sell hardcore drugs” joke put me on my ass in the game, so fingers crossed some version of that makes it into the show. Gabriel Luna, of Agents of Shield fame, is also set to play Joel’s brother Tommy.

The Last of Us TV show will be the first foray from PlayStation Productions into live action entertainment, owned by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Considering both a starring actor and one of the lead writers for Chernobyl (Craig Mazin) will be working on the show, I’ll use this moment to recommend checking out Philosophy Tube’s analysis video on HBO’s Chernobyl, where (pre-out) Abby Thorn analyses the ethics and philosophy of personal responsibility.

Neil Druckmann, the lead writer for the first game (and co-president of Naughty Dog), will also be co-writer and executive-producer for the upcoming TV show adaptation, so this could either go absolutely brilliantly or absolutely not. Take it from me, us creatives have a lot of variation when it comes to how we go about tinkering with our “darlings”, to borrow a phrase from William Faulkner.

Shooting for The Last of Us TV show started in July, with plans to wrap up around mid-2022, expected to be largely following the plot of the first game.

Accessibility in video games is varied and interesting topic to discuss. Not just in terms of “let me access all the games”, but also in the sense of “hey, a lot of games aren’t easily playable for folks with some disabilities, what’s up with that”.

There has recently been a report a study on needs and habits of disabled gamers in the UK, performed by the charity organisation Scope and written up by Vivek Gohill. The study included 1,326 people (812 disabled, 514 not disabled) with the goal of exploring issues faced in the gaming world. You can view the full report here.

Common complaints regarding lack of accessibility include:

• The high expense and low availability of assistive technology.
• Lack of in-game accessibility options.
• An inability to return games upon discovering it does not have contextually essential accessible features.

The report also showed disabled individuals often purchase in-game extras more often in games they do play, as well as watching Esports and engaging in social media more often. Gohill also pointed out the some 14 million disabled gamers in the UK alone spend combined billions in disposable income, so there’s an ethically sound reason for broadening accessible features across more video games. On a similar note, there’s a great Jimquisition episode on how loot boxes and gambling mechanics in gaming effect discourse on accessibility.

Prominent video games praised for their accessibility options include Forza Horizon 5, the latest Ratchet and Clank, and The Last of Us Part 2 (featuring options tailored for players with hearing difficulties, sight impairment and difficulty with physical mobility). In true Paralympic fashion, Microsoft has also announced plans for an ‘inclusion-based’ Esports tournament, as well as having released an Xbox Adaptive Controller for players who struggle with the standard controller.

Given the toxicity of of many online spaces, the Scope report also highlights that “doing more to tackle negative attitudes about disability online” should be a top priority based on responses from its participants. As someone on the autistic spectrum, I agree that more should be done to dismantle negative preconceptions about people with disabilities. Not everyone will react the same to having those conversations and progress can be very small on an individual scale, but every little helps.

Turtle Rock Studios, the developer company for Back 4 Blood released a statement on wanting to get the game’s difficulty “just right”, as mentioned in a Reddit post by the company’s official channel. Despite (in my opinion, correct) claims that ‘a bit of difficulty can add a lot of replayability’, Turtle Rock is mostly concerned with criticisms from players on the difficulty of Back 4 Blood, as well as how issues and bugs found during development resulted in the game being ‘more difficult than intended’.

If you’re a Dark Soulsian difficulty-loving cycle-path (like me), then you’re in luck because we’re selling Back 4 Blood on PS4, Xbox One and not one, not two, but THREE PlayStation 5 editions (Standard, Steelbook and Special).

The Opinion Corner: Based on my highly rigorous intellectually herculean research on Back 4 Blood (which consists of a half-remembered Zero Punctuation review and playing Left 4 Dead a few years ago), the main source of difficulty gameplay wise comes from general bullet-sponge-grunge-festivity of the various zombie lads. That in itself isn’t a bad thing all the time, but next time you want to make a game difficult AND fun, you’ll want to make the way something is difficult clear.

Let’s take The Last of Us for example; another classic zombie shooty-bang-bang: Between the fast sight-gifted “runners”, the deadly but visually-impaired “clickers” and the burly-boi “bloaters”, each enemy type has different strengths and shortcomings that mean you have to adapt on the fly with how you react to them. And that’s not even covering environmental factors, like whether you’re able to take the stealthy approach at a certain time.

Back 2 Back 4 Blood. Other gameplay issues and fixes mentioned in the Reddit post include:

• The spawn rate of Ridden Mutations.
• Adjusting the trauma-damage system.
• Updates made to melee cards.
• The Cardinal Sin of ‘refocusing on playstyles away from speedrunning’. Speedrunning is awesome, here’s why!
• Oh, an offline mode, that’s nice.
• DLC and new difficulty levels have been released.
• A focus on ‘quality of life changes’.

The television adaptation of the beloved PlayStation exclusive series has revealed its first look

Naughty Dog Co-President, Neil Druckmann, who is the creative director and writer of the PlayStation Exclusive series The Last of Us, has shared an image of the set on “The Last of Us Day”.

When I first saw them on set in full costume, I was like: "Hooooooly shit! It's Joel & Ellie! 😭!"

Druckmann will be a director of HBO’s first series, which is sourced from an updated production list on the Directors Guild of Canada website from earlier this month. There will be five directors working on the series. Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin is listed as one of the directors and is co-writing and executive producing the show alongside Neil Druckmann.

The pilot episode is directed by Kantemir Balagov, who has uploaded a photo on Instagram expressing his gratitude for working on the series. The Last of Us adaptation is the first television series from PlayStation Productions, a studio formed by Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt its original game properties for film and TV.

In this series, Joel Miller is played by Pedro Pascal; he is known for his role as Javier Peña in the Netflix series Narcos. Ellie is played by Bella Ramsey, who is known for playing Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones. Another confirmed character and casting, who is not shown in the shared picture, is Joel’s daughter, Sarah. She is played by Nico Parker, the daughter of actress Thandie Newton, the starring actress of 2019’s Dumbo.

The production, which is set to wrap in June 2022, is expected to cover the events of The Last of Us (2013) and may include content based on The Last of Us Part 2 (2020). Filming is underway in Alberta, Canada, with its streets redesigned to look like the streets of Austin, Texas.

Stay explores what it’s like to be a ‘regular’ in the universe of The Last of Us.

The world is patiently waiting for the upcoming HBO The Last Of Us TV series, which has been gathering hype over the last month, following casting announcements etc. In anticipation, fans across the globe have taken it amongst themselves to release various self-made projects ranging from the upcoming film Project Spores to a handful of well-edited movie concept trailers. Well, it seems this train keeps on rolling as we have been given another diamond to enjoy.

There is a new The Last Of Us-inspired fan-made short-film on the block called Stay. It was released on Youtube this week, and it is awe-inspiring. You can check out the short film below:

If you’ve played either of Naughty Dog’s acclaimed games, you know that some of the richest stories are told in the peripheral. Stay draws on this, exploring what it could be like to live in a world of The Last of Us without being featured on the front cover.

Stay reflects the emotional warmth, depth and potency that Naughty Dog’s franchise is known for in just over seven minutes.

The film’s official description (from Youtube) is as follows:

“Stay is the story of two survivors whose hope for the Santa Monica Pier lights their path through the ruthless, dying world of The Last of Us.

It was made by a team of filmmakers, VFX artists, and fans of the game to tell an original story in the world of The Last of Us. I’m extremely grateful for everyone who worked so hard to bring this story to life.”

‘The Last of Us’ Movie

It is still faithful to the game, but has some “pretty big changes”…

The upcoming feature film based on Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic action game The Last of Us won’t follow the 2013 title’s story exactly, but it will capture its overall tone, according to Neil Druckmann. He directed the world renowned game and is working with Sony to write the upcoming movie too. In an interview with Game Informer, Druckmann said,  “There are some big changes, but the tone and what the story’s trying to say is pretty faithful to the game.”, which is what he replied when being asked how faithful the film will stay to the game.

Druckmann said that the script is coming along “really well” and has noted that he’s already finished the second draft. He went on to say that he and the production team have already had a table read with “a bunch of actors”, but he did not disclose if Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) was one of them. She is, however, reportedly a frontrunner for the role of Ellie. There is no news on the role of Joel though, or any of the other characters. No director has been announced, though Spider-Man veteran Sam Raimi is confirmed to be producing it.

“When I’m in the office, it’s all Uncharted 4 all the time,” he said. “When I should be sleeping, it’s the Uncharted movie.” The interviewer then corrected him. “Yeah, sorry, The Last of Us movie.” – This was Druckmann in response to the fact that he’s co-directing the upcoming PS4 game, ‘Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End’, as well as writing the script for ‘The Last of Us’ movie. His response suggests that he clearly hasn’t been getting much sleep lately. Poor chap!

The Last of Us was released in June 2013 for PlayStation 3, while a Remastered version of the game later arrived for PS4. The game tells a post-apocalyptic story of a man (Joel) and a young women (Ellie) who are fighting to survive against humans and other deadly creatures.
