What is Nier: Reincarnation?
Nier: Reincarnation is Yako Taro’s most recent creation coming to mobile on the 28th July and boy, do fans have mixed feelings, but first thing’s first…what is it?
At Square Enix’s E3 event, they showcased Nier: Reincarnation, an action-roleplay game that takes place in the same universe as Nier: Replicant and Nier: Automata. It is the first game in the Nier series to ever be released on a mobile phone.
The game is set in a mysterious world called ‘The Cage’ where the player takes on the role of the main character who is known as ‘The Girl of Light’ who is guided by a ghost-like being called Mama, who seems to have more of a child-like appearance, the best way to explain it is the look of a small napkin thrown over a tiny doll, in attempts to look similar to a simple Halloween costume. The two venture together through The Cage to unlock memories all while avoiding a God-like creature they call The Dark Monster.
What is the Nier: Reincarnation gameplay like?
Well, aren’t we all wondering…First, the gameplay is set in three separate parts. The first part begins with ‘The Girl of Light’ exploring the multiple areas of The Cage with her companion Mama. In the midst of their exploration, the two come across these statues called Scarecrows, they allow the player to upgrade weapons that are specifically used to fight off enemies within the unlocked memories.
In each memory, the player gets to experience the history related to that specific weapon. This comes with a unique perspective of an almost 2D- painting aesthetic, with further narration to help the player understand what’s happened within the story. Similar to the feel of a storybook.
The battles play out in real time, they are automatic and work against, typically 3 enemies, the player can incorporate special attacks by tapping icons on-screen when they’ve charged throughout the battle. Any extra characters or weapons will be obtained through a gacha mechanic. For more of a look into the gameplay, here are 9 minutes of it from IGN’s Youtube channel.
What are fans saying about Nier: Reincarnation?
Some of the Nier fans have expressed their love towards the upcoming of Nier: Reincarnation, while some have their doubts. Fans have mentioned that the gacha mechanic could possibly ruin their experience of Nier: Reincarnation, by making it more difficult to make sufficient progress. They worry that without spending any money, gameplay will prove to be frustrating during battles, without a certain type of character or weapon that would need to be bought as an in-game purchase.
Furthermore, some fans also wonder why Nier: Reincarnation couldn’t be released on a console in addition to the mobile version, as they find at times playing on a small screen can prove to be tedious with issues such as overheating, slowing down the mobile system and little concern for their posture if the game should take hours to complete.
However, that’s not to say there aren’t many fans who aren’t excited. Many are already impressed by the visuals, the multiple perspectives and POV during gameplay, which also includes the art styles. Most are hoping for a release of the soundtracks on CD or MP3 and are expecting an emotional story to accompany these tracks.
