The Game Awards were an absolute blast, right? We saw the announcement of some exciting upcoming games which we cant wait to get our hands on! Unfortunately, there was one game rumoured to make an appearance which didn’t get revealed- Mortal Kombat 12.
Fans of the fighting franchise felt dismantled come the end of the show, especially considering the game awards are usually where the series flexes its trailer muscles. However, this moment just never came, so what could’ve been the reason? Is the game just not ready yet? Has NetherRealm had a falling out with the Game Awards? Well it looks like we’ve finally got our answer.
Before we reveal it, here’s the full presentation for those of you who are yet to have seen it!
NetherRealm Creative Director Explains Mortal Kombat Absence
We had to take to the Twitterverse to find any sort of explanation and luckily we sort of found one. According to series co-creator and NetherRealm creative director Ed Boon, there are many more things that need to happen before the game can be announced.
“Really appreciate the enthusiasm for our next game and wish we were ready to announce. But we aren’t yet. Many more variables involved than we are allowed to disclose.” However, it must be noted that he’s not directly acknowledging Mortal Kombat 12 as the studio’s next game.
Well sorry for the anti-climatic answer to it all! It just simply looks like that the project isn’t in a good enough state for it to be showcased. I guess we’ll just have to be patient then! Furthermore, this is what else they had to say upon the matter:
“NRS is working on improving their “core technology for the Mortal Kombat franchise” based on these job ads, which would explain why they’re not ready to show us anything yet. i guess we should be patient, since it’ll look good enough to be worth the wait”.
Not only this, but fans were also disappointed not to have an Injustice 3 trailer at the Game Awards. Despite this, we’re thankful for all the trailers we did receive, as they’ve only just gone and got us so hyped for the new year.
Overall, time will eventually tell what NetherRealm has in store so stay tuned. Whilst we wait, Mortal Kombat 11 is available for Xbox One, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, Nintendo Switch and Google Stadia. Make sure to pick up your copy of the game here!
