PC gaming is a funny beast. On a purely objective standpoint, A PC will always be capable at running games at a higher quality and with better performance than a console… but also due to the differences in hardware between any given PC its often hard to know what will work and what will not on your system. Micorosft has recently started testing a feature that could make this process a bit easier. First spotted by the verge, the Xbox app on windows now has a label that will tell you if a game will “play great” on your PC.
There are some titles which the app lists as “performance check not yet available”, suggesting that mictosoft isnt comparing the game against your personal, specific specs. What they are probably doing is testing these games on a variety of machines and basing the rank on that. If you want to test the labels yourself, you can do it by downloading the Xbox Insider app and opting into the windows gaming preview.
If this system does its job, this could help alleviate a common pain point for PC gamers. Recently some devs have chosen not just to show off the minimum and recommended specs for a game, but also the best specs for full HD, QHD and 4k resolution. This has yet to be standardised however, and even then some developers will list some… let’s say optimistic requirements for their games.
