Super Mario 64 has its massive 25th Birthday, which includes the original Nintendo 64 console as well. Can you believe it? That’s two decades and a half, Nintendo sure has come a long way. Today marks 25 years since Japan had the official release of Nintendo 64 and with its history-changing game, Super Mario 64.
The Nintendo 64 is known for changing gaming history by being one of the very first systems to have an analogue controller and one of the first to have four controller ports to allow 4-players to game together at the same time without the need of a peripheral. The system originally dubbed Project Reality and then the ultimate was born… the Ultra 64 which was released in Japan on 23rd June 1996, then in September 1996, it was released in North America, lastly Europe in March of 1997.
Nintendo has stayed on its traditional path by continuing with its cartridge-based software, which has now become a very unique attribute to Nintendo (if I do say so myself). The Nintendo Wii and Gamecube being an exception, they have stuck close to their word and have created one of their most successful consoles, the Nintendo Switch. To most of our surprise, carts cost a lot more to produce than CDs and hold less data, which means that Nintendo continues to struggle to gain some of the third party support that Sony gets to enjoy. When Squaresoft was testing a Final Fantasy VII game on the Nintendo 64 hardware, they had made the final decision to develop the game on a PlayStation system instead which unfortunately distanced the series from Nintendo.
However, even when lacking some third-party support, the Nintendo 64 is still memorable, despite its small library of games they still managed to create games that are close to many fans hearts, gave something to their childhoods and has brought family and friends together.

Nintendo re-released Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo DS in 2004 and a second time on the Nintendo Switch with Super Mario 3d-All-stars, which includes Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Sunshine & the famed Super Mario 64!
