Masahiro Ito, largely known for his work as a lead artist and designer for the early Silent Hill games, recently Tweeted the colorfully-worded hottake of “I wish I hadn’t designed f**kin Pyramid Head“!
Naturally, this prompted many a fan’s curiosity as to why this is the case, myself included. And if you’re reading this because you’re expecting an explanation, what a coincidence, I’d like one too! Ito’s immediate responses were “I don’t Tweet the reason” and “The reason is not that I can’t get paid for the statues. I’ve never gotten paid for those in the first place”.
Forget ‘Death of the Author‘ theory, this is like if the author walked into a pitchfork-wielding mob with a sign that says ‘I dare you’ strapped to his back! Not that I’m complaining, I’m also partial to sitting back and watching the masses fill in the blanks with their imaginations while sipping a house red and watching the calamity unfold like:
While I have you, let’s go over some Pyramid Head trivia to pass the time!
Ito’s passion for German WW2-era tanks played a role in Pyramid Head’s design, the edges of his helmet being inspired by the lower hull of a ‘king tiger’ tank. Considering Pyramid Head is read by many as a semi-Freudian metaphor for hyper-masculinity and sexual frustration, I suppose it’s only natural his design be partly based on something that has a long protruding tip designed to blow holes in anything that moves. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.
Amongst other major horror franchises, our triangularly-challenged sword-wielding mascot has been added to Dead By Daylight.
One of Pyramid Head’s most infamous moments in Silent Hill is a scene where it is assaulting two sentient mannequin enemies. Ito has half-jokingly commented how his involvement in directing the scene made finding a girlfriend difficult. He’s also claimed Pyramid Head wasn’t meant to represent overtly sexual primarily, but also act as a symbolic presentation of the protagonist’s desire to rid himself of his repressed feelings.
And last, but not least, I’ll love and leave you with this handy-dandy more lighthearted overview of the character by Fact Fiend. Because when you’re low on content, a little creative theft never hurt anyone!
