Battlefield 2042 Season 1 is currently set for release in early June.

DICE‘s troubled title Battlefield 2042 finally has a release date for it’s battle pass-style upcoming Season 1 update. Early June is the time but it can’t ever be set in stone with the quite frankly horrible start to Battlefield’s life cycle. Even before release this game has been in a downward spiral, with the open beta last summer that gave everyone access to try the game early being pretty much unplayable to multiple delays to the initial release date of the game Battlefield has taken many many hits but DICE and EA are trying to turn this around with multiple hotfixes and patches to build up to the release of Season 1.

Season 1 is DICE and EA‘s attempt to copy the unbelievable success of Fortnite and Call of Duty Warzone‘s battle pass, a live service with plenty of features and unlockables for gamers to earn whilst playing with friends and against others in online competitive modes. Battlefield 2042 has taken such a reputation hit over the last 6 months with players leaving in droves with the PC edition of the game dropping below 1,000 concurrent players in April, a truly shocking amount from such a popular run of titles, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Battlefield 1, 4 and 5 all being massive successes for DICE and their publisher EA.

EA CEO Andrew Wilson was quoted last week.

This is one of the great franchises of our industry, built by one of the great teams in the industry, and our expectations are it’s going to continue to grow and be a really important part of our portfolio for many, many years to come.

This comes after many fans suggesting that EA and DICE have given up the crumbling franchise after flagship Halo Infinite was released with fans loving the newest addition to the long running franchise. Andrew Wilson had denied claims that Halo Infinite made Battlefields issues look more prominent after Halo’s impromptu release of a free multiplayer for all Xbox players.

Through all the stumbles EA are hell bent on sticking with Battlefield 2042 with multiple quality of life updates and listening to fans requests to add features that were expected such as a dynamic leaderboard to check on your stats mid-game(something that should’ve been featured since release). So does the future finally look bright for Battlefield 2042.

Battlefield Update Coming Next Week

Battlefield 2042 is to receive over 400 bug fixes and improvements in its next update. According to Kevin Johnson, Community Manager for EA DICE, the game is set to receive Update 4.0 next week. Johnson tweeted the announcement on April 13th and shared some of the “key” features that DICE are bringing to the game. Let’s have a look at what these features include.

Changes to Specialist Characters

The first update mentioned is changes to Battlefield‘s new Specialist System. Johnson announced that characters Rao and Paik are to have their traits updated. Specialists are one of 2042’s new addition to the Battlefield gameplay and feature 10 characters each with their own speciality and trait. However, this new system has received a large amount of backlash from fans, who say it ruins gameplay and is merely a means of monetisation and micro-transactions – a feature no stranger to EA players. EA announced that they would address these issues, however Johnson confirmed that this update is merely focused on three of the characters individually.

Rao, a Hacker or Recon character, has a Trojan Network trait, in which a player must kill an enemy to then reveal the locations of other nearby enemies. Paik, another Recon character, has a Threat Perception trait that allows players to automatically spot the enemies that are inflicting damaging on them. It is not stated yet what the updates to these traits will be, but perhaps it will make the traits less cumbersome to use or more rewarding – a complaint that has been levelled at these characters. Sundance, an Assault character, is also being updated with fixes to her Grenade belt allowing for better “target acquisition”.

XP Updates

Update 4.0 also brings a string of updates towards Battlefield‘s XP and award system. Johnson announced that updates are coming to the Ribbon system, which should allow players to upgrade more easily in game modes such as Rush. Rush, in which one team must detonate charges while the other defends, has been a staple franchise game mode since Battlefield: Bad Company. It was removed from Battlefield 2042 but after severe backlash, the developers returned the game mode to the Battlefield franchise. In addition to the Ribbon system, the updates also focus on XP for support actions and teamplay to “ensure teamwork remains king.”

Attachments

Next on the list of features receiving an update are weapon attachments. Attachments have long been another staple of the Battlefield series and received an update with the launch of 2042. The ‘Plus System‘ allowed players to quickly change attachments while on the move. However this feature also faced criticism, with players complaining that the attachments were either not working or looked too similar. According to Kevin Johnson, Update 4.0 seeks to face these criticisms head-on, with a focus on making sure the attachments feel unique.

Vehicles

Finally, the last major change listed focuses on the vehicles in 2042. Johnson tweeted that the vehicle warfare will undergo “balancing” with the intention of making the battle between vehicles and infantry less one-sided and “still has some bite!” In addition, a major bug is being addressed after many players experienced no ADS – meaning they couldn’t aim – after they exited a vehicle.

Desperate Times for DICE?

Next week can’t come soon enough for the developers at EA DICE, after reports that Battlefield 2042‘s Steam player count dropped below 1,000. Steamcharts‘ data suggests the average player count for the last 30 days sits around the 1,800 mark. In comparison, recent hit Elden Ring has an average of around 351,000 and long fan-favourite CS:GO reached up to 575,000 players in the last month.

Battlefield 2042 has been beset with issues from the start. And while DICE seem to be addressing the problems fans are facing with Battlefield 2042, the number of problems the games still has suggests it will be a long road ahead.

Battlefield 2042 has had a rough few months since its launch. Its scrapped a lot of series staple features, it doesn’t run well (to the point that cheat developers have abandoned the game), and its player base is consistently lower than that of Battlefield five, the also maligned previous entry in the series. Hell, the game doesnt even have a scoreboard and will only be getting one in February.

Industry insider Tom Henderson on Twitter is painting an even bleaker picture of this game. In one tweet he stated:

“For those asking, I dont know whats going on at the moment with Battlefield 2042 because I dont think *they* know whats going on. They are stuck between a rock and a hard place and it’s going to be genuinely difficult (if not impossible) to fix the game.”

He went on to say, regarding EA’s upcoming earnings call:

“We’ll probably get the following on the game during their earnings call on Feb 1st “BF2042 failed to meet expectations on launch, but we have a strong live service planned which we will announce soon” – But I’m hoping analysts will put pressure on EA to get answers.”

This is the same sort of statement said about Anthem before its cancellation and closure, so thinks are really looking down for the struggling game.

Later, Tom Henderson would return with even more news, saying that EA is disappointed with how Battlefield 2042 has performed, and may even be looking into taking the game to be free to play to some extent. Originally saying more would come the next day, it was actually 2 days later that Henderson would post a youtube video to his channel titled “BATTLEFIELD 2042 FREE TO PLAY? – Player Numbers, Analyst Opinions. Legal Consultation, and MORE!”. You can check out the video here.

It should be noted that even if this ends up true then this isn’t necessarily the whole game going free to play, maybe just a part of it like the portal mode for example.

Smaller Conquest and Breakthrough matches are available for a limited time.

Battlefield 2042 initially launched with 128-player game modes on next-gen consoles and PC, while the PS4 and Xbox One were capped at 64 players. Therefore, those owning a next-generation device could not play smaller (but still large scale) game modes.

Well, things are about to change as DICE have added smaller Conquest and Breakthrough modes for the newer devices. Additionally, DICE said today that the featured Rush playlist will be available throughout the holiday. The option to matchmake is on the Portal’s home screen.

In other battlefield-related news, earlier this month, Electronic Arts announced plans to create a “connected Battlefield universe” alongside widespread changes to the franchise’s development structure.

DICE general manager Oscar Gabrielson is set to leave EA as part of these plans. At the same time, Respawn, and Infinity Ward co-founder Vince Zampella will take on a new role as the overseer of the entire Battlefield franchise.

Halo designer Marcus Lehto is also leading a new Seattle studio whose aim will be to add a more meaningful narrative to the Battlefield series.

It doesn’t look like Santa Claus will be on the front line after all…

We reported yesterday that you can expect Christmas-themed skins to be added to Battlefield 2042 this holiday, following a leak on social media.

Well, I am sorry to tell you that DICE has come out today and squashed the rumours via their official Twitter account. “Development for Live Service requires us to work months in advance and enables us to have options when we reach key moments in our first year,” DICE stated, explaining that the skins were developed as options–an option it’s not taking.

“Today, we have other priorities, and so whilst we have the skins, we presently have no plans to utilize all of them this Holiday,” the studio concluded.

DICE also mentioned that it will create “unique cosmetics for single-time use in special Battlefield Portal modes,” so players may encounter mode-locked cosmetics in the future.

However, while players can’t get the controversial skins and go around spreading holiday cheer as a murderous Santa Claus, DICE did promise opportunities to obtain other skins. Starting the week of December 6, players can complete objectives to earn new skins and new items. Every week, there will be a new skin to unlock until Season 1.

EA. Honey. Baby. Comrade. I’m not saying we need to talk about branding… Because we don’t, I hope Battlefield fans enjoy the good news… On the shared universe front, at least.

EA: Out with the old, in with the new.

A Gamespot report shows that the Battlefield publishers at EA want to release more Battlefield titles with shared characters and connected storylines, ala the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). Other plans for the company include Oscar Gabrielson (general manager of DICE) being set to leave EA.

Vince Zampella (co-founder of Respawn Entertainment) is now the official overseer of the Battlefield franchise. Marcus Lehto (of Halo design fame) is also going to be in charge of a new studio in Seattle with the aim of making greater narratives for the Battlefield series.

Zampella, when asked in the Gamespot interview, stated the new plans for improving Battlefield are not, I repeat, NOT an attempt to deflect from the fact that Battlefield 2042 has had a relatively unsuccessful launch, likely due to having more bugs than an entomologist’s personal fire ant reserve. “We will continue to evolve and grow Battlefield 2042, and we’ll explore new kinds of experiences and business models along the way”, Zampella claims.

Fawzi Mesmar (head of design at DICE who worked on Battlefield and Star Wars Battlefront games) has also reportedly left the company shortly after Battlefield 2042 released, a work email showing he had wanted to leave for some time.

It’s possible Lehto may also have a hand in developing the upcoming Battlefield mobile game set for 2022 release. EA also claimed to be putting Zampella in charge of overseeing development of a new game by Ripple Effect (formerly DICE LA). There’s currently no explicit mention of the new game being in the Battlefield series.

According to a leak earlier today, Battlefield 2042 will add a host of Christmas themed skins to the warzone.

The leak was quickly deleted but people on social media were fast enough to save the images.

As you can see, some of the upcoming weekly mission rewards will allow players to unlock the “Big Nic” tank skin with reindeer on it, the “Little Blitzen” helicopter skin, and the big-ticket item, a “Father Winter” skin that lets you become Santa with a machine gun. Following a smaller update back on November 25th, Battlefield 2042 is getting a much more substantial change today. Titled Update #3 (very creative), the patch includes a laundry list of fixes and changes to the game to address the numerous bugs and glitches the game has been experiencing, as well as the ability to play Rush using the Battlefield portal.

Rush is a classic mode in the Battlefield Franchise, but it was initially left out of 2042 until now. The mode involves players planting bombs on objectives in the games all out warfare maps though battlefield portal. Challenges are also making a return with this update, although they will be different to those seen in battlefield 3 and 4. Instead of unlocking guns, challenges reward players with XP. However, people who finish all 3 weekly challenges will get a cosmetic reward.

The update should help with stability issues, with map improvements totaling to “over 150 individual fixes, small changes and improvements” and some of the games more… odd bugs, like one that would stop missile countermeasures in vehicles from working, have been resolved.

Like the last patch, this one also comes with some quality of life fixes. Players should now find it easier to customize their weapons thanks to the Streamlined collection screen, and also the UI has been decluttered in game. However, Legacy features like voice chat and post game scoreboards have been left out of this patch.

Battlefield 2042 was launched just over a week ago, after much anticipation. Many fans were looking forward to jumping into the enormous 128-player engagements promised by developer DICE as the latest instalment in the Battlefield series. However, many are dissatisfied with the game. While the gameplay contains much of the spectacle, fans have reported a number of bugs and exploits that have impacted the entire experience.

Since launch, Battlefield 2042 has had a multitude of issues, many of which have been resolved in recent patches. One of the most recent exploits players have found, yet to be fixed, is the a way to render smoke grenades useless. This is because there is a way to clear the smoke from your screen, leaving you unaffected.

A post on Reddit was one of the first to report the flaw in Battlefield 2042. A user known as Jagsfootball51 provided a video demonstrating the new exploit . During the video, the user shows to cancel the visual effect of smoke grenades with a simple exploit. A group of enemies was observed on the other side of cover from Jagsfootball51 at the start of the video. While attempting to revive a dead teammate, the enemies detonated a smoke grenade, hiding their location.

Jagsfootball51, unfortunately for the enemies, was aware of the smoke grenade exploit. To turn off the smoke effect, the player only needs to go to the menu and select the Collections tab. The smoke dissipated almost instantly after this activity. This gave the player the opportunity to dispatch the unsuspecting foes.

Smoke Grenade Glitch in Battlefield Gives a Competitive Edge

Several members of the Battlefield 2042 community on Reddit have taken notice of this smoke grenade exploit. Many people were surprised by how quickly the problem was discovered, with over 4,800 upvotes in just a few hours. Unsurprisingly, many gamers expressed their dissatisfaction with the game’s presence of this problem. Unlike some exploits that required multiple steps to complete, the smoke grenade issue was easy to implement. Aside from concerns about the exploit jeopardising game competitiveness, many fans saw it as yet another technical misstep.

It’ll be fascinating to see how DICE handles this problem in Battlefield 2042 in the future. While the developer expects to release another update in December that promises to remedy several of the issues, a game-breaking bug like this will almost certainly need to be addressed sooner rather than later. Hopefully, a solution will be discovered quickly so that gamers can resume using smoke grenades in the way they were intended.

One patch landed yesterday (November 25th), the next will arrive in early December.

Battlefield 2042 hasn’t quite hit the ground running as EA DICE would have hoped. Amidst issues with bugs and glitches, it has received a wealth of negative feedback on Steam. However, despite all that, it is one of the platforms most played games, with the title already hitting “millions” of players.

EA DICE is definitely not sitting back and doing nothing, however. They have constantly been working on bringing small patches, fixing various issues within the game. Now, the most sizable patch yet is dropping today.

Yesterday’s update – named update two, follows the day one patch launched a week after the game was widely available (look, video game launches are complicated now) and introduces balancing and performance tweaks.

Among them is improving how revives work on the field, nerfing the hovercraft and nightbird, improving the respawn system, and fixing the overstated shot dispersion that has made Battlefield 2042’s gunplay feel so shoddy. Some of the game’s assault rifles have an incredibly high spread that prevents players from firing accurately within the weapon’s range. To address that problem, the game’s weapon spread while zoomed and moving will be reduced, and accuracy while zoomed and stationery has been increased.

The third update, which comes out next month, goes much deeper, introducing fixes for the interface, maps, matchmaking and progression. Overall, the update will include a suite of quality of life changes. For instance, the game will have new markers to make newly-unlocked items easier to find and streamline the UI for managing weapon attachments. Players will start getting weekly missions when this patch launches, which gives them a set of challenges to complete with a cosmetic reward. Sadly, neither of the two updates add a voice chat mechanic. Hopefully, this will be added at some point down the line.
