This year saw the return of the Summer Game Fest which showcased a variety of games to the public the event was held on June 9th and showed off a variety of games including Call of duty Modern warfare 2, Street fighter 6, The Last of Us Part 1, Gotham knights and more!

The event creator and host of Summer Game Fest Geoff Keighley has said that this year’s show was the biggest Summer Games Fest in terms of viewership and social media engagement, this was a record 27 million global live streams which is an 8% increase from 2021.

The event attracted 3.5 peak global live stream viewers and had over 6000 co-streamers, on twitter there was a 100% increase in conversation and the hashtag “The Game Awards” was up by 69%

While impressive there is still some ways to go before it rivals Geoff Keighley’s other awards show “The Game Awards” which had 85 million live streams back in December 2021

The majority of the Summer Game Fest took place from June 9-12 but announcements were made over a matter of weeks as well and earlier on June 2nd PlayStation had it’s state of play event which showcased games such as Street fighter 6, Final Fantasy 16 and the long-awaited Resident Evil 4 Remake. The Xbox and Bethesda showcase on June 12th had their own games to show off such as the first look into Starfield Gameplay and Redfall gameplay.

 

Next year there will be another Summer Game Fest which Geoff Keighley confirmed will be both a digital and in-person event “I’m excited to share that Summer Game Fest will return in June 2023 as a digital and an in-person event, to bring the gaming community together,”

It’s unclear whether this means that the Summer Game Fest will be open to the public or not but if it is it would mark the first time that the Summer Game Fest can be attended physically as previous years were digital showcases.

On top of that E3 which was the go-to for many top announcements will be coming back in 2023 as the E3 owner entertainment software association has said during this month that they are planning to bring back the long-running gaming event in 2023

With a variety of game shows taking place as well as various companies such as PlayStation during their own showcases it’s unclear just how much there will be to show but it’s sure to be competitive and exciting year for gaming in general.

Given the rising awareness of the D4C‘s of the board at Activision Blizzard, I find this an important and relevant time to discuss allyship (mostly in terms of the gaming sphere, but also more broadly in other topics).

What is allyship: Allyship is the act of showing or giving support to a people or social justice movement. Allyship can apply to anti-racism, anti-fascism, worker’s rights, LGBT+ inclusion, women’s rights and more.

Antifa as a political ideology has been subject to a lot of hostility in America by prominent news outlets (mostly of the Fox variety), so for a proper analysis on antifa as a concept, I recommend watching Abby Thorn’s Philosophy of Antifa. Citations up the wazoo, “BASED and Fact-Pilled af” as they say.

Being an ally takes a lot of reading, watching and thinking about various topics that vary in how well you may know them. Someone knowledgeable about aspects of race and racism may not be as familiar with LGBT+ concepts and discrimination. Someone who knows about both may not be the most aware of how the economy and systematic issues play a role in injustices. We’ll get to introductory outlets in the last two subheadings.

What causes should I ally myself with: Besides the ones listed in the allyship definition section, there are aspects of worker’s rights causes and topics that fall neatly into the wide and wonderful world of gaming. Workplace discrimination is a big problem. There is also discourse on crunch culture (which also effects the anime and manga industries to a degree). Accessibility in gaming for people with physical and mental disabilities is another good cause to stand by.

What is crunch: Crunch culture is when workers have to work extra hours with little to no extra pay, sometimes in Amazonian conditions (and I ain’t talking about the jungle). Naughty Dog is one of the biggest companies that has put its workers through crunch work. Some companies participating in crunch also threaten to leave the names of key designers off the in-game end credits if they leave before production finishes, forcing many to prioritize a salary and their CV over their mental and physical health.

What to do as an ally: Essentially, doing your part however big or small in trying to make the social issues you want fixed to be discussed and possibly improved. Sure, telling your slightly-racist grandpa (or president) that the n-word stopped being a formal term of classification in the 90s is good, but there are other ways of rising awareness of social issues.

You can follow specific channel outlets that discuss the prevalence of issues in the gaming community. Among them, you can follow @ABetterABK and @ABetterUbisoft, which have open letters and petitions pinned to the top of their profiles that can help people from around the world contribute to bettering the toxic workplace cultures of Activision Blizzard and Ubisoft.

I fancy myself a little bit of an auteur at the best of times, so I lean towards the YouTube scene of making political edutainment art as my favorite act of allyship. Long-time readers will know that James Stephanie Sterling is a favorite of mine. You can also organize protest marches, petitions, or try working with a local politician to run on a pro-intersectionality platform.

Intersectionality largely refers to the awareness of how various traits of a person can interact in different scenarios. For example, misogynoir is a term that describes the intersectionality between race and womanhood, giving a name to an issue that specifically affects women and femme-presenting who are also people of color.

For any game devs reading this, consider looking into starting a worker’s union if you feel you’re being mistreated by your boss. That said, you’d also have to try convincing your fellow colleagues that would be a good idea, which can vary in difficulty on a case-by-case basis.

This one is more of a slacktivism pet-peeve of mine, but for the love of God’s boner, please don’t post story images that read “if you’re against X, share this”. If you want to tell people something about a serious issue, just say it! I don’t want Janice Karenson thinking I’m not against racism just because I didn’t share her mood board of Idris Elba photoshopped in front of some BLM-themed graffiti!

… Now I give you an accurate image of my reaction after writing this long-ass section!

On handling backlash to inclusion: Honestly, that topic is going to have to wait for another day. But I will highlight one major warning on the topic! Do not, I repeat, DO NOT default to “google is free” activism! Specifically, the Social Dilemma, a Netflix documentary on social media, explicitly states that Google and search engine results are not the same for everyone! It’s moreso tailored to what drives interaction regardless of factual accuracy, so if you find yourself watching Joe Rogan interview Abigail Shrier one day, you could well end up listening to Paul Joseph Watson and PragerU the next… Which is ironic, because what I’m about to suggest is that you should go onto Google (I swear, I’m going somewhere with this), type in Google Scholar, find the Google Scholar search engine and then look up studies and articles on whatever subjects you want to learn about.

Better Ways To Learn About Allyship Than This… For now, maybe I’ll remake this article as a video three years later and call it a Director’s Cut.

In a shocking turn of events, my first recommendation isn’t a YouTube video, but an article reviewing an event on Allyship in EA Games and the workplace. Comrade EA!?

On a wider scale, we have How Not To Be An Ally and Why Allies Need To Knock by FD The Signifier (pronounced “fid”). While I don’t fully agree with every single criticism of Robert Tolppi (specifically the brief “he’s just a kid” sections), this and his other videos are fun ways of about common pitfalls folks can fall into regarding allyship.

Fan favorite Philosophy Tube did a great breakdown of the games industry in relation to free market ideals, with parts that hit especially hard given the rise of NFT’s.

Asphalt Xtreme And Bowling Ballers Have Now Been Added To Netflix’s Library Of Free games

Since Netflix has started to shift into the gaming industry, there has been some mixed feelings about it. However, in collaboration with games like Cuphead and making a TV series based around it, we can have some faith that they know what they’re doing. Recently they’ve added to their library of free games Asphalt Xtreme and Bowling Ballers. These games are free for anyone to download, as long as they have a Netflix subscription. There is already a small library of games including; Stranger Things 3: The Game, Stranger Things: 1984, Card Blast, Teeter Up and Shooting Hoops.

But What Is Asphalt Xtreme and Bowling Ballers?

Asphalt Xtreme is an action racing video game developed in 2016 by Gameloft, the game continues to carry its classic, traditional feel and remains nostalgic to its fans. Asphalt Xtreme has a good amount of worldwide race tracks and a range of cars to choose from and obtain over time. It doesn’t stray from what the classic arcade racing game should continue to be.

 

Bowling Ballers is an adorable, endless-runner bowling game, developed by Netflix themselves. This specific game is only available with a Netflix subscription. With the ‘Kawaii’ (cute) aspect to it, they are sure to draw in a young audience. Rather than avoiding obstacles, the players are encouraged to knock items over, which is logical as they are controlling a bowling ball. “Mechanics include skateboarding, flying and more, all with simple, intuitive gameplay.”. As mentioned in the game description, this does seem very unique and has features that many other endless runners do not have. It also seems as though the course changes and becomes increasingly difficult over time, the layout and presentation don’t stay the same.

What will Netflix Have Planned For The Future?

So far it seems as though Netflix is trying to shoot for a broad audience, but by how the popularity of Bowling Ballers is going, they may choose to continue and make games that will appeal to young children and families.

That’s right folks, between the Minecraft storymodes (psst, we got some cool Minecrafterooneys here), that one Carmen Sandiego special, Bandersnatch and the League of Legends adaptation Arcane (more on that here), Netflix states plans to make games accessible for the App Store and IOS. For a little catch-up, we have some backstory on Netflix’s own recent gaming service for Android users.

There may be some push-back, as tech reporter for Bloomberg Mark Gurman has pointed out the App Store’s primary policy being against letting third-party companies make their own gaming hubs in the store. And don’t even get me started on the Fortnite-Chinese store debacle or the play store legalese that became the impetus for a 1984-style ad on the topic by Epic Games.

Xbox Cloud Gaming, Nvidia GeForce Now, and Google Stadia have also tried (and currently failed) to appeal to Apple, but as of yet, the only way way these services have gotten to work is via Cloud-based gaming services, like how Facebook (possibly soon to be Meta) has a bunch of accessible mini-games of varying quality you can play with friends on Messenger. I like Words with Friends and the basketball hoopy-shooty-woosh-dunkery one.

Gurman has gone on to state that despite Netflix’s games being playable via the in-app login, it can’t be downloaded from the app itself. You’ll have to get it from the app store first, then log into Netflix. For Android games, Netflix’s gaming system functions this way for the Google Play Store.

The Funtime Netflix Recommendation Hole: Because I’ve heard many a sad tale from friends of mine complaining they ran out of stuff to watch on Netflix, so here’s some recommendations for anyone using Netflix UK, or anyone who’s international and uses Nord VPN or the like.

  1. White Tiger (Netflix Original): A shrewd young man from a poor family uses his wit and intellect to rise to incredible wealth. A darkly funny and emotionally raw exploration of class struggles and inequalities. Think Wolf of Wallstreet but double the wolf (or tiger rather) and half the Wallstreet.
  2. Inside Job (Netflix Original): What if every single majorly insane conspiracy theory (besides the Flat-Earther’s) was real and kept under wraps by a corrupt government? Boom! Quirky adult sitcom fun times written and produced by Gravity Falls creators Shion Takeuchi and Alex Hirsch! I especially liked the episode parodying James Bond that also acted as a critique of toxic masculinity and incel culture. For a breakdown on the Incel crowd, have a butcher’s at the video by Contrapoints on the topic.
  3. Om Shanti Om: My very first Bollywood experience and a welcomed one! You know how a lot of JoJo fans (myself occasionally included) point to all the weird wacky plot points without context in a non-sequitur jokey way which leads to a “you gotta see it to believe it” method of encouragement? Om Shanti is basically THAT for Bollywood, so I won’t go too in-depth on the plot, but I will say it is a hilarious and beautiful watch alone or with friends. Overcome the one-inch-high barrier that is subtitles and you’re in for a world of fun.

Star Ocean: The Divine Force looks pleasantly good

 

At PlayStation’s State of Play showcase a new Star Ocean game was announced, Star Ocean: The Divine Force brought to you by Square Enix. The trailer did not give a specific release window, which lead some fans to believe they have quite a lot to work on, but they have said the game will release in the year 2022. Some fans believe that they will get more information of a release date in Spring 2022, and hopefully release Star Ocean: The Divine Force Autumn – Winter 2022 at the latest.

 

What Consoles Will Star Ocean: The Divine Force be released on?

It has been said that star Ocean will release on P4, PS5, PC, Xbox Series X and Xbox One.

Which are without a doubt the best platforms to release them on, the graphics look great and the gameplay seems fast-paced and the open-world freedom opens doors up for exploration, but a few fans agree that the trailer still seemed to be lacking something. Which will explain why they aren’t releasing Star Ocean so soon. Overall, most fans are very excited for the release of Star Ocean: The Divine Force and are happy to see their favourite series are continuing.

 

Can New Players Get into Star Ocean: The Divine Force?

Star Ocean: The Divine Force seems as though it will definitely attract those new to the series and open them to a world of fantasy, sci-fi and a unique open-world JRPG. It also seems like a great starting point for anyone new to JRPG’s as the open-world aspect will provide freedom to the new player, to explore without feeling as though they are held back by a linear story and small map. They’ll get to experience Star Ocean at its best.

Square Enix are well-known for their amazing JRPGs, so expect nothing less than amazing with the development of Star Ocean: The Divine Force.

Voice of Cards releasing this Thursday 28th October

Voice of Cards was fully announced at Nintendo’s Direct Streamed on the 23rd of September. The Nintendo Direct featured other games, such as Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Bayonetta 3, Splatoon 3 and but most importantly, Yoko Taro’s newest masterpiece, Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars (VOD or Voice of Cards for Short) brought to you by Square Enix. Yoko Taro has also worked on previous games and is very well-known known for his work on the NieR and Drakengard series. However, Yoko Taro is only one of the masterminds that bring his work to life.

 

What is Voice of Cards?

Voice of Cards is a tabletop RPG, as described by Square Enix themselves “The story follows a self-proclaimed hero as they set off to slay a recently awakened dragon” The game is presented in the form of a tabletop RPG, the gameplay being narrated by one known as the gamemaster. The trailer doesn’t reveal much and neither does the Twitter account, except a few words from Square Enix this week during the countdown towards the game.

– 3 days to go – “Three is the magic number! Dizzy symbol Not long until you are introduced to Melanie and can find out more about her grudge with the Dragon in #VoiceOfCards The Isle Dragon Roars.”

– 2 days to go – “Unlock character and enemy stories as you make your way through your quest and fight monsters.”

Square Enix has been very subtle about what they show their viewers, they want the players to go in without any expectations and just enjoy the game for what they dish out to them. They have shown little gameplay, but not nearly enough to pull out a judgement card.

 

Should You Get Voice of Cards?

Well, it depends if you enjoy story, reading and narration. If you enjoy thinking strategically during gameplay. If these are all a yes, then this game is for you.

Personally speaking, Voice of Cards feels like it will be a masterpiece and I could tell from just playing the DEMO. The writing is fantastic and the way it’s been executed is a great way to draw you in. Not only are you welcomed by the game master, but the game master also informs you that the ‘journey’ in this game of cards will be a dangerous one. However, there’s something that makes you want to continue and once you’re in, you feel as though you HAVE TO commit, you have to finish what you started.

The soundtrack is beautiful, but that is to be expected. Square Enix has always been good at working with people who know how to make amazing soundtracks, especially with the NieR Series where the soundtrack has been described as ‘God singing’.

There’s a lot to expect from Voice of Cards and tons to unfold. It’s certainly worth a try and for the price, we can’t complain.

It has been announced by ManaVoid Entertainment, the developers themselves that Rainbow Billy: The Curse of Leviathan will indeed be released on the 5th October 2021, that’s 4 days time…It’s come a long way since being announced at the Wholesome Games Direct, during E3. Many have been waiting for its release, the best way to describe this Indie game is a cross between Paper Mario and Chicory. As the Paper Mario franchise hasn’t impressed fans recently with the games Nintendo has put out, they’ve been looking for alternatives, one 2.5D game that gained a reasonable amount of recognition, is Bug Fables, which had everything the Paper Mario fans were looking for, except for Paper Mario. However, times are changing and these other 2.5D games have their own unique style to it, while the appearance is similar to Paper Mario, the storyline, dialogue, mechanics and exploration, are all different. They don’t aim to make a Paper Mario replica for Paper Mario fans, but they aim to take inspiration and surprise Paper Mario fans with their new, innovative creation of a 2.5D game. It’s not always going to include turn-based battle, the soundtrack you’re looking for or an exact storyline mimicking the original. Rainbow Billy The Curse of Leviathan and many other 2.5D games, will have their own vibe and I think we should ALL give these games a chance! What is Rainbow Billy The Curse of Leviathan?

 

Well, Rainbow Billy: The Curse of Leviathan is an adventure RPG developed ManaVoid Entertainment and is a 2.5D game. Rainbow Billy is an Adventure RPG ManaVoid has described this as a game where you “Save whimsical creatures with the power of kindness in order to recolour a black-and-white world in Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan, a wholesome 2.5D Adventure-RPG!”. Leviathan, the evil sea monster has taken colour away from the world and it’s up to you to bring it back. With multiple islands to visit, inhabitants to help and bosses to defeat. Not to mention puzzles, exploration and shops where you can get the equipment you’ll need on your dangerous journey (Have you heard the adorable shop theme? Click here to have a look). Rainbow billy is a whimsical, quirky, action-adventure game that everyone should have on their Wishlist.

The Ultimate Gamer’s Magazine: A Profound Waste Of Time, Finally Back on Kickstarter

A lot of the time, most people feel as though they only get a hold of the end product when it comes to a game, we hardly see the in-between. Yes, here and there we’ll see the development, but we never truly hear about what it’s like to create a game or participate in the production of one. Whether they are a designer, programmer, artist, writer, engineer…you name it. The point is, this magazine gives us a glimpse of that and from different people. However, they also touch on everyday gamers like you and me, YouTubers and more.

APWOT’s magazine, A profound Waste of Time, received strong demand for a reprint and reached its Kickstarter goal of £40,000 in less than 24 hours, exceeding up to 43,000 as of recent times and counting. Anyone who missed the campaign can get a second chance at buying the magazine WITH the special items that can only be obtained through the Kickstarter Campaign, add-ons such as enamel pins, a game themed tarot card set, digital wallpapers and more.

 

Issue 1

As described on their Kickstarter page In Issue 1 has two editions, the standard edition and the glow in the dark edition. They have also listed what the magazine includes and who they include, which I’ve listed from their page in the following:

 

Issue 2

A fantastic follow-up to our debut issue, Issue 2 is filled with art and words from an incredible line-up of people, including Keita Takahashi, Tetsuya Mizuguchi, Jenny Jiao Hsia and many more. This issue has an interview with Team Cherry, creators of beloved indie metroidvania Hollow Knight, along with a visual essay by internationally renowned photographer Liam Wong, exploring the parts of Tokyo that have inspired videogames.

Issue 2 also has two editions, the standard edition and the iridescence edition, which is a shiny rainbow glimmering type cover, the colours change as the reader moves the magazine around. Once again they have also listed what the magazine includes the people involved, which I’ve listed (originally from the kickstarter) below:

 

And for both Issue 1 & 2, it doesn’t end there. The magazine is filled with much more to get your teeth stuck into. There’s a lot going and it’s for sure increasing in popularity, so you better get your hands on one while you can, the estimated shipping time is December, so if you miss your chance now, you may not get one until 2022. Why wait for something so amazing?

Well, I’ll start with a small introduction, shall I?

My name is Tamara, I’m 24 years old. I work at Go2games as a Graphic Designer; It’s my responsibility to create product posts and memes for social media platforms and creating unique and eye-catching visuals.

In the first half of the day, I focused on creating eyecatching posts of products Go2games have to offer. Here is an example of one previous post I created:

When it comes to creating this kind of post the first thing I tend to focus on is using a border that will help catch people’s attention. To give the whole image a more ‘gaming’ type of feel. I decided on a pixel type of border using the signature Go2Games colours; Blue & Purple. Then after designing the border, the next thing to do is add a background, as a plain white background can get somewhat boring after seeing it over and over and the goal is to choose a colour that can not only relate to the game but it can also catch the attention of its audience.

So in this case, No More Heroes 3 was the main focus of this post, so I decided on adding a shadow behind the gaming case to give it a 3D effect and settled on the colour purple as it helped flatter the colours used in the game. But just using a plain purple background wouldn’t be enough to make it stand out so with the help of a colleague, he was able to design a background that gave an ombre effect, showing off different shades of purple which made the background more pleasing to the human eye.

So now that the game had its own unique way to stand out plus the simple but effective background, all that was left was to add the appropriate text to entice its viewers to purchase this product and of course, adding our signature Go2Games Logo so viewers know exactly where to purchase the product, my job was almost done.

The last step in the Product Post process is for me is to upload the completed version and then contact our very own social media team, who hold the responsibility of posting what I create. Once they have a look and I’ve given the okay. My job is done and I move on to the next product post that was assigned to me. I will work on this for the majority of the day unless I have been assigned another task.

That’s just a rough idea of what I get up to during a workday at Go2Games.
