For the uninitiated among you, Dead By Daylight is a popular third-person horror game featuring various modes and crossovers with famous horror franchises like Friday the 13th, Stranger Things, and the subject of today’s blog, Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

The folks at Behaviour Interactive have removed Leatherface cosmetics from Dead by Daylight after years of complaints that black players have been harassed by Leatherface players. Specifically, one of the unlockable Leatherface masks is of him wearing the face of one of the black player character avatars, so needless to say, I’m sure the 4Chan crowd had a laugh with the mask’s similar aesthetic to blackface.

MiladyConfetti, a black Twitch streamer, was so perplexed at the sight of the mask, she initially thought it was a glitch for Sobek’s sake! Click here for a November 2021 video by streamer SistaKaren on the topic with multiple perspectives from other harassed players and content creators… Must be the one good Karen, I assume.

An official developer update via forum says the Leatherface mask will be removed in the next update, but anyone who purchased Leatherface will be compensated with in-game currency.

““I was harassed by players who knew I was a streamer particularly with the Blackface Leatherface cosmetic. I knew it was the players because after being harassed in the game, they would come to my stream and call me slurs and acknowledge that they were the killer.” – MiladyConfetti.

With all that in mind, do I think Behaviour Interactive did the right thing? In my humble opinion, YES… And no. Removing the cosmetic is all well and good, but this is a drop in the bucket compared to the wider issue of online harassment. Many online spaces aren’t good at cracking down on harassment reports, in part due to large user sizes. So, now is as good a time as any to plug my past article on Paidia, a sort of online community aimed at fighting online harassment by building an inclusive space for all… Except the Nazis, terfs, swerfs and other assorted erfs, of course.

As someone who’s also interested in topics around artistic license and auteurship, I’m also glad the Behaviour creator of the masks has come out advocating support for its removal due to its use in racist targeted hate campaigns.

Wronged Us is an upcoming horror title set to release in 2023 inspired by the classic Silent Hill and Dark Souls series. The horror game had its gameplay teaser release during the Golden Joystick Awards, so worth keeping them on your radar for potential future titles that could be interesting.

Despite rumors on a potential Silent Hill game being sadly dashed on the rocks of fate (on account of Konami being the only company in the entire world allergic to the prospect of making money), its effects as a franchise have been strongly felt across many horror games today. Think The Beatles of horror games… Which is probably a better comparison than I thought considering creepy crawlies in games are a pretty easy way to freak me out! I mean, the spiders in Nioh? Pure unadulterated pasteurized nightmare fuel in pixel form! Feel free to pick it up from our store if you’re in a particularly calm mood and would like to ruin it.

Wronged Us sees the player as Isaac, a visitor to an unsettling rural town trying to find a missing person. The gameplay features a couple headless folks, a disturbingly tall bloke who looks like a white Kareem Abdul-Jabar and some totally not menacing cult-like congregations by a campfire… And by campfire, I mean full-on residential arson.

In addition to the game’s website confirming inspiration from Dark Souls in terms of world design, there will also be some stealth sections and moments of action. Let’s not mince words, the in-door bits of Isaac hiding behind a sofa and scrambling to blast at The Amazing Wall-Crawling Legally Distinct Monster Man has some clear parallels to The Last of Us combat and Resident Evil’s Licker enemies.

The graphics may not be as ultra-crispy-smooth as the usual fare you get from games of this size, but overall, it looks very interesting with the promise of an engaging story and moments of Hitchcockian tension-building. I think an open-world horror game would benefit from a more extreme Lovecraftian aesthetic and enemy variety over the more “grounded” domestic-rural horror it’s going for, but if the devs are making that choice knowing it’ll be the best way to tell their story, I’m all eyes and ears!

Bramble: The Mountain King is a story-driven nordic-themed horror game set to release on consoles and PC in 2022, developed by Dimfrost Studio. Click here for the cinematic trailer and here for the story trailer!

The imagery is suitably striking and intriguing, mixing up scenic beautiful landscapes of Miyazaki-level quality with characters who look like the unholy offspring of Coraline and the Rankin-Bass animated Rudolph movie. Really helps sell the unsettling atmosphere. Gameplay also seems to borrow from Little Nightmares, although this seems to have more of a preference for 2.5D or more overt third-person 3D sections.

Bramble: The Mountain King sees players lost in a magical forrest with their big sister, Hansel and Gretel style. Meet various mythical creatures of differing degrees of friendliness while taking on puzzles that can call for stealth, action and strategy.

“Our goal for Bramble is to create a living and strange world filled with mysterious and mythical creatures. They will not only be a passive part of the world but also an active part of your journey. Some of them will help you, some of them need your help, and some of them just want to eat you! They live in this world and players will interact with their everyday lives. Our gameplay and storytelling will support that feeling” – Fredrik Selldén, the CEO of Dimfrost.

• On your travels, unravel the mystery of a dark curse.
• Intense boss fights of David and Goliathian proportions!
• Nordic mythical creatures will include the Nacken, the Skogsra, trolls and gnomes.
• Ramble in Bramble, environments inspired by Nordic nature.

Scorn is a game so long in development that it was actually on steam greenlight back in the day. Yes, that steam greenlight. The one that hasnt been a thing in half a decade at this point. After that was shut down, Scorn Appeared on Kickstarter where it raised a tidy $223,000 and had a 2018 release date, which it failed to hit before going dark.

After this, scorn was missing for a few years, with some (myself included) presuming the devs had either taken the money and run or that the game had been cancelled for some reason. However in 2020 the game re-emerged, this time the game was partnered with Xbox and with a 2021 release date, which, needless to say, they have now missed.

In a kickstarter update, Ebb games wrote: “Development hell is a term that is thrown around quite often. It should be used on projects that changed their core idea or scope mid-dev and can’t adjust to, That doesn’t apply to our products for the most part. In our case, a lot of mistakes were made and will make more in the future, but it’s a normal process for a new, inexperienced team.”

“Everything that was done up until the middle of 2018 has been reworked, 90% of it completely scrapped. It’s about making it what we want it to be, not releasing it just because we gave some arbitrary release date. If it’s not ready, it’s not ready. Why would people want to play something that the developers think it’s still not up to par?”

Ending on a somewhat combative note (that has since been withdrawn and apologised for) “If lack of communication is so bothersome just ask for a refund and be done with it”

Within 24 hours of this coming out, CEO Ljubomir Peklar said in regards to that last comment “I quickly and haphazardly read through the draft of the update and in all my wisdom approved it. Reading through again it was clear that the hostile tone it was written in should not be how we should express ideas or plans to people that help us out. We may be tired, confused and frustrated at our own ineptitude, but there is no reason to lash out at you. For that I personally apologise. I will do my best for this kind of outburst not to happen again.”

Scorn is going to be an FPS horror game inspired by the work of H R Geiger, who is probably best known for being the artist who designed the Iconic Xenomorph alien. Their style combines Organic and technological ideas. Scorn really looks like it will capitalize on those ideas. Its environments look Slimy and organic, yet planned and uniform at the same time. its primary weapon even appears to be alive to some extent.

Unfortunately scorn did get a bit lost in the shuffle, being announced at a similar time to “Agony”, another game with a similar style of gameplay, a similar horrific setting and large amounts of sexually charged imagery, albeit Scorns is a bit more nuanced than Agonys was.

It may be old news by now, but seeing the Jimquisition’s take on it today really riled me up on the topic again, so here’s my extremely Turkey-cold take on the whole debacle, while also hoping to give more insight to others less familiar.

Earlier this year, it was leaked that Scott Cawthon (creator of the beloved Five Nights at Freddy’s or FNAF franchise including games, books and more) donated around $42,000 (around £31,460) to various far-right politicians and anti-LGBT+ advocates since 2016. People donated to include Mitch McConnell (anti-abortioneer and homophobe), Donald Trump (need I say more?) and Ben Carson whom amongst other things, has also shared the antisemitic dog whistle that Hitler’s power would have been “diminished if the people had been armed”. The donations were later confirmed by Scott Cawthon and OpenSecrets.Org, a non-profit that tracks political donations in America.

Shortly after the news and his confirmations, Scott allegedly received death threats and by his admission, was even doxxed (when an internet troll/s leaks personal information with the intent to harm, such as a person’s address or phone number). Not long after, Scott released a statement declaring his retirement pictured below.

Despite the large number of anti-LGBT figures Scott has donated to, it is worth noting he has also (before the leak) donated $50,000 to the Trevor Project, a pro-LGBT charity. Granted, this was during a public charity livestream hosted by Dawko, a gaming YouTuber. I’ll leave whether or not this was sincerely motivated by geniune allyship up to you. Scott’s list of donations also included some Liberal Democrats, including one Tulsi Gabbard (his first to receive donations) on the grounds that ‘she would have been a good and fair president’. Not saying that this is a get out of metaphorical jail free card, but it at least goes to show there’s more nuance here than just “Scotty Scotterson donated the big money to bad people”.

Across the various donations, the only unifying factor (as posited in an interesting video by Game Theory) shared by all of the figures (besides capitalism, because let’s be honest, the version of Joe Biden touted about in Fox News is more of a leftist than the real thing) is strong stances on improving the military. Okay, so it’s not necessarily unlikely that Scott didn’t have bad intentions (depending where you stand on policies for the military), but at the same time, an argument from a dear friend and self-identified “dirtbag leftist” has pointed out that the whole “more trans/female drone pilots” philosophy can be seen as a sneaky choice of flipping people’s perspectives from what is done to who is doing it. For example: On the one hand, male privilege? White privilege? Without getting too bogged down by details, those are 100% real things that do indeed, exist. On the other hand, letting more marginalized people into positions of power only solves half the problem (the other half being, how do we build a better society that reduces the need for military conflicts and other societal issues like poverty). Scott’s (supposed) preferred focus on the military could also be seen to implying LGBT civil rights are a less important/secondary issue, which is an equally valid reading of the situation.

I must now love and leave you, as I wasn’t able to work on this at a time I wanted due to some Tom-foolery with my laptop flipping out, but while you’re still stunned into contemplating your ethical stance on the situation- SPONSORSHIIIIIIP- and the sponsor is me. A new board game is coming for fans of the survival horror game and you have a chance to back it!

Halloween is just around the corner but the survival horror genre is everlasting when it comes to the number of games you can throw yourself into. Resident Evil is no exception, especially with all the different games in the series, the multiple live-action adaptations it has received. a comic book series, and its very own board games.

Resident Evil: The Board Game

Steamforged Games published a board game for Resident Evil 2 back in 2017 and another for Resident Evil 3 set to release this November. The company announced last month it would be publishing another for the original Capcom video game that started it all. 

Resident Evil: The Board Game is a cooperative survival horror game for 1-4 players that sees players step into the boots of a S.T.A.R. member and enter the sinister Spencer Mansion to uncover the horrifying truths within. Search for secrets as well as survivors and try to survive the night with  crawling with enemies around you.

The  board game features the S.T.A.R. members Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Rebecca Chambers, and Barry Burton as playable figurines and also includes a number of enemy figurines based on classic Resident Evil enemy NPCs.

The company stated it would start a Kickstarter campaign for the board game this autumn. The page finally launched yesterday and…

the board game is already completely funded!

As of writing this, Resident Evil: The Board Game has 4,691 backers and has raised a total of £761,540, which is roughly just over $1,000,000. The Kickstarter campaign still has 14 days to go to receive more funds and backers.

Resident Evil is a timeless series that hasn’t lost its wonder yet, and with more days to go, the board game is certainly going to grow from strength to strength and is the perfect celebration for the 25th anniversary!

2022 is about to become more terrifying…

Horror fans rejoice! The A Quite Place franchise is about to expand into the gaming industry thanks to the new video game that has been announced.

Saber Interactive is teaming up with iLLOGIKA and EP1T0ME to make a video game set in the Quiet Place universe. The film series started off on Netflix, then received a worldwide release of the sequel earlier this year after it was delayed due to the pandemic.

A Quiet Place Video Game

The movies follow the story of one family as they fight to survive after an invasion by deadly aliens who are hypersensitive to sound. Yet the invasion happens all over the world, which gives the perfect excuse for another story to be told through another medium.

It is currently scheduled to be released in 2022 and there’s already an official site for the game available! It describes the game as “simply terrifying”, as well as informing fans they will be able to experience “an untold story” when playing said game.

 

This first official video game set in the terrifying A Quiet Place universe will deliver an original story and gameplay that captures the compelling suspense, emotion, and drama for which the series is famous.” – Saber Interactive.

 

So expect a game on a similar level to Alien Isolation and Metal Gear Solid where stealth is the key element for success.

The game is being published by Saber Interactive which has worked on popular film-to-video-game adaptations such as World War Z and Evil Dead: The Game. There are also some veteran talents working at iLLOGIKA, the Montreal-based studio that has have worked on franchises such as Far Cry and Rainbow Six.

Since A Quiet Place is no longer on Netflix, that is probably the reason why this video game isn’t one of the many that Netflix is now publishing. Yet it sounds like the game is in good hands and we can expect a game that will match the film series’ intensity and suspense.

Tandem: A Tale of Shadows is like Coraline & Monster House had a Kid

This isn’t the first action-adventure game that plays around with perspective, but it’s not Paper Mario The Origami King, Superliminal, Little Nightmares or Little Nightmares II. This game plays around with perspective in a different way and combines their puzzles with reflex, speed, changes between 2D and 2.5D and has multiple stages in each Chapter to get through. Every Chapter has a floor that you need to get through and each floor has a boss. The eerie vibes suit the Epic Mickey and Coraline world the most, that is the best way to describe it. So What is this mysterious game? Tandem: Tale of Shadows.

What is Tandem Tale of Shadows?

Tandem Tale of Shadows is an action-adventure, puzzle platformer game, developed by Monochrome Paris. Set in what seems like early 19th century England ( The Victorian Era). A child by the name of Thomas Kane has gone missing and without much of a trace…so a young Teddy Bear that had fallen out of the Kane family carriage, comes to life and has decided to team up and discover the truth by visiting the Kane family mansion and investigating. I suspect that the Teddy belongs to Thomas Kane, but may have been previously dropped and picked up by the family members along the way and then thrown out onto the street…what do you suspect? The Epic Games store has also decided to support the release of Tandem Tale of Shadows as well, here’s their description from their website. “Thomas Kane, a famous kid, has mysteriously disappeared. Forsaken by Scotland Yard, Emma and her faithful teddy bear Fenton decide to resume the investigation. They will rummage The Kane family mansion from top to bottom as the place is now shadowy and spooky, deserted by the desperate parents. Will she uncover the truth in time?”

Epic games store goes into further description on the type of game being published “Tandem: A Tale of Shadows redefines the puzzle-platformer genre with unique gameplay and exceptional aesthetics. Help Emma and the teddy bear Fenton solve the mystery of the disappearance of the famous magician Thomas Kane.”

Check out Tandem’s jaw-dropping visuals and the chiaroscuro dimensions inspired by Tim Burton. Use light and Shadow to guide Emma and Fenton past sinister rooms in the Manor of the Kanes.

Epic Games store has confidence that Tandem Tale of Shadows will do well, I also have the same thoughts. Those who enjoyed Little Nightmares, Lost in Random, Little Misfortune and many other fantasy-horror favourites, may pique the interest of those fans.
