Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick discusses the troubles of including real life brands into the ever expanding world of GTA online

Brand Collaborations are all the range in the video game world these days, with the likes of Fortnite, Fall Guys and the assortment of sports games such as FIFA and NBA 2K all jumping on the brand integration train with success so it’s surprise that probably the biggest video game of the past decade Grand Theft Auto V that doesn’t wasn’t to go with the wave of other games. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has suggested that players shouldn’t expect to see any brand inclusion anytime soon.

The world of GTA is a fictional world, so to bring real-life brands in, they really have to be iconic and they have to fit within that world, Zelnick says.

It’s very much a creative decision driven by the team at Rockstar. It’s not a financial decision.

Zelnick said NBA and PGA (games that are under the Take-Two umbrella) lend themselves to big clothing brands while GTA Online is a fictional world and to add real life brands to that they have to be iconic and fit within that world. The GTA Series and the online section of the game has always been known for parodying brands and pop culture moments so to add real life brands would look out of place in the vibrant land of Los Santos.

The real question is, does GTA need to include real life brands into their ever changing world? the answer is…no, as of time of writing GTA has made over $6 billion. An obscene number that companies around the world couldn’t even imagine let alone from one singular game that came out in 2013. GTA 5‘s wider success is largely down to GTA Online, making $800 million on shark cards alone, the player base can buy in-game currency with these shark cards to buy property, clothes and cars in the world. In it’s latest full-year earnings report Take-Two claimed that GTA 5 has shipped over 165 million copies of the game since it’s release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, lasting through 3 generations of consoles including Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.

The GTA train keeps on rolling with the GTA Trilogy: the Definitive Edition was released last November with remastered versions of industry changing titles of GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas but it came with largely negative reviews because of the poor state the game was released with many glitches some of them crashing the game. But the shining light is with improvements and many patches being introduced over the last couple of months the game has been an enjoyable experience for many and the Trilogy capitalises on the one thing that gamers love, nostalgia!

Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian has just weighed in with his opinion about the concept of Play-To-Earn games. The highly successful entrepreneur has expressed his optimism of the possibility, and personally believes the huge change to the gaming world will happen in the not so distant future.

This should come as no surprise for those familiar with Ohanian, as the industry figure has recently turned his business attention to blockchain and crypto-related projects.In a latest episode of Where it Happens podcast, Ohanian referenced the potential uses of blockchain tech and what it could mean for the future of gaming.

“90% of people will not play a game unless they are being properly valued for that time,” Ohanian claimed in the podcast. “In five years, you will actually value your time properly, and instead of being harvested for advertisements, or being fleeced for dollars to buy stupid hammers you don’t actually own, you will be playing some on-chain equivalent game that will be just as fun, but you’ll actually earn value and you will be the harvester.”

Why Do Play-To-Earn Games Use Crypto?

Generally, Play-To-Earn games use Crypto Tokens instead of regular in-game currency as players can then exchange their in-game earnings for real-world currency. As a result, the exchange is kept simple and effective which allows everyone across the globe to get involved. One major example which uses this model is Axie Infinity, where people can buy and sell Axies for RONIN cryptocurrency.

However, it should be noted that this doesn’t come without its issues. According to a Business Insider report, Axie’s in-game economy is already stumbling into some trouble, as players returns from the game are shrinking over time because gamers cash out their earnings instead of investing them back into the game. This could cause trouble for the game economy’s sustainability, especially when considering the $300 buy-in minimum which may cause gamers to be even more hesitant.

Despite this, other industry figures still continue to show their interest in the concept. Studios such as Take-Two, EA and Square Enix all seem to be lining up in anticipation to get on board, making Ohanian’s comments seem very much possible. What’d do you all think on the issue? Oh, Rockstar. Honey. Baby. My darling GTA holes. Corporate Uncritical Networking Teams of epic proportions! We NEED to talk… Just, in general, like, wanna get a pint after reading? Your treat, of course.

To briefly summarize before we get to the news: Rockstar has been making so much money from GTA 5 and GTA Online that they’re basically the Disney of gaming companies, in that they don’t really have to try too hard to make stuff anymore because that Scrooge McDuckian money pool isn’t exactly going anywhere! After 8 years of expansions to GTA 5 Online (psst, which we have!) we now get the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition.

Criticisms range from bugs and glitches to strange spelling mistakes from a corner-cutting AI of samurai proportions and- THE BURGER DOESN’T SPIN!? And I’m sorry, “the taste of a real man’s heat” sounds more like a bikram yoga joint than a hotdog place! If I wanted to taste a man’s heat, I’d glaze myself in hot sauce and become a contortionist!

GTA 6: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly: Known leaker who covers titles from Rockstar and Quantic Dreams games (AccNGT) has recently aired some concerns on Twitter regarding how ‘Some people don’t realize how chaotic the development is’, also claiming that although the visuals will be high-quality, it will be a disappointment if it were to release next year.

While Naughty Dog and Rockstar have been known to get their hands dirty with crunch time issues (which you can find out more on here), given the recent announcement of the Dr Dre expansion for GTA, I doubt even Rockstar would confirm anything for GTA 6 this soon.

AccNGT doesn’t clarify if they’re talking about the gameplay or story mode being the main things to suffer.

Other leakers have claimed that GTA 6 allegedly started production shortly after former co-founder and writer Dan Houser left Rockstar. His departure has lead to Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two to dropping in stocks, so GTA 6 may well end up being the Metal Gear Survive of the Grand Theft Auto universe if this is true.

Rockstar Games have announced there are 3 GTA classic remasters in the works and will be available on ALL platforms

No, there’s still no news on GTA VI (despite how it was trending on Twitter due to this story). However, this is still something for fans to get excited about.

Rockstar Games are planning the release of three classics GTA games and it has been confirmed they will be available on all gaming platforms including Nintendo Switch.

The games that are being remastered are Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

GTA Remastered Trilogy

Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas were all originally released on PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360, with GTA III celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and the developers, followed with Vice City and San Andreas one and three years later.

Kotaku reports the three games are in development at Rockstar Dundee, previously known as Ruffian Games, and are in the final stages of development. It is unclear what the remastered elements will consist of, but it has been reported Rockstar Dundee are also working on GTA V remaster for the next-gen consoles that is coming out on November 11, so it can be expected they will be similar to that.

The remakes are being made for all platforms, including the Nintendo Switch, making these three games the first third-person GTA games available on a Nintendo console.

This follows on from the news that Take-Two, the GTA parent publisher, stated they also have 3 unannounced remasters in development, however, these GTA titles are not what they were hinting at as it was stated by CEO Strauss Zelnick that any GTA remasters would be announced by Rockstar, so more titles from Take-Two are still to be announced.

Take-Two is working on 3 unannounced remasters from their collection and we are very excited about it.

The announcement comes from an investor presentation Take-Two published this week, which lists three unannounced “new iterations of previously released titles”.

These projects are listed alongside their upcoming PS5 and Xbox Series X/S remasters Grand Theft Auto V, Kerbal Space Program, and the highly-anticipated stand-alone version of Grand Theft Auto Online. 

Unannounced Remasters

Take-Two have openly discussed the possibility and intention to create remasters of past titles before. Back in March last year, the company’s CEO Strauss Zelnick discussed this during the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference and stated that the company wouldn’t interested in releasing “simple ports”.

Remastering has always been a part of the strategy. We’ve done differently than the competition – we don’t just port titles over, we actually take the time to do the very best job we can making the title different for the new release, for the new technology that we’re launching it on. – Strauss Zelnick.

Zelnick went onto explain that Take-Two takes pride in improving the technology, upgrading the visuals, and making performance enhancements so the remasters can be experienced at the best of their ability on the new-gen consoles.

Take-Two recently released its Mafia: Trilogy Collection as a remaster for PS4 and Xbox One back in May 2020 which was really appreciated by its fans from their reviews on Metacritic, so fans of Take-Two can expect their trip to the past to be extremely nostalgic and rewarding to play all these years later.

Does this mean there will be more GTA remasters in the works? Well, during Take-Two’s third-quarter earnings back in February, Zelnick was asked the same thing and gave a non-committal response by saying he was inclined to leave it as a statement and let the schedule for any GTA remasters come from its developer Rockstar Games instead.

So, we don’t know what to expect yet, but Take-Two certainly is taking these remasters with great care and consideration.

The post Take-Two: GTA Publisher Announces 3 Remasters Are In The Works first appeared on Get2Gaming.

2K Games confirmed they will be releasing details of their new franchise that will be released at the end of the current fiscal year.

2K Games confirmed the news at its parent company Take Two‘s 2022 Q1 earnings results call that took place on Monday.

The new franchise can be expected to release before March 31 2022.

2K’s New Franchise

Sadly there aren’t many details to be revealed as of yet but Two Take’s president, Karl Slatoff, confirmed: “2K will unveil details of another exciting new franchise planned for launch during this fiscal year”.

There’s a lot of speculation going around that this new game could be developed by Firaxis, the developers of Civilisation and XCOM, who have a history of publishing their games under 2K Games. It is said the developer has several games to announce later this year, one reportedly being a new Marvel game, however, this has yet to be officially confirmed.

The new franchise could be announced at Gamescom 2021, which has been confirmed to be all online again this year and will take place between August 25-27.

Take-Two also said it had delayed the launch of its two immersive core titles to later in the current fiscal year than originally planned. The company intended to release 21 games this year, including a new franchise from Borderlands developer Gearbox.
