Brooks), Australian HEMA (Historical European Martial-Arts) YouTuber, media critic and author of the Shadow of the Conqueror series… Speaking of authors, show some love to ‘Not to be Mistaken For Sorbet‘, a poetry anthology by a good friend who co-hosts on The Hmm Collective podcast, also very fun.

Spill The Ale, Brethren: Shadiversity recently released this video with the aim of providing game developers with reference material for combat animations. Shad’s a vocal advocate for more realism in media, especially film and gaming that depicts medieval and old historical settings. Even in fantasy and sci-fi media, some true-to-life elements can really help elevate the text and I wholeheartedly agree with him on that.

Shad’s got the hashtag #medievalcombatreference started and invited other content creators to get join him in getting the ball rolling with providing material for realistic combat moveset animations.

How I got into Papa-Shad:

The first video of his I saw was from his Fantasy Rearmed series, where he applies his knowledge to come up with entertaining and unique ideas about what kind of weapons would be realistically most  effective against (and for) different fantasy races. That video on giants was especially horrifying in big-brained kinda way! Let’s just say David wouldn’t have stood a chance against Goliath if they swapped weapons.

Then I got to his fight scene analysis pieces on Star Wars and other media analysis. Then I fell in love with the way he says “stick” for reasons even unknown to myself! Smash cut to now and I’m getting paid to write about the lad.

Now’s my first time dipping my webbed flippers into the pool of Twitch drama, so wish me luck! Alternatively, feel free to check my last piece on Pokimane if you’re looking for something a little less dense. I’ll try my best to keep things unbiased, while also calling out the worst of the worst things coming up.

Details man! They are important: Reports have come through that Tyler ‘Ninja‘ Belvins (God, I love that name, on a phonetic level at least) and his wife are getting their legal team involved shortly after Pokimane (Imane Anys) claimed Ninja texted a Twitch representative to help JiDion (Demarcus Cousins the 3rd… CRIKEY that’s a name) with a hate raid on her channel. JiDion was then perma-banned from Twitch shortly after.

JiDion’s fans have admitted to ‘hate-raiding’ Pokimane on a Ninja stream according to Pokimane, which I’m inclined to believe, but I recommend cross-referencing this with other channels on the minuscule off-chance that I’m wrong here.

Pokimane also implied without outright stating (to my knowledge) that Ninja referred to her as a “bitch” (in a stream between JiDion and Ninja) before backpedaling and saying “I meant bitches in general” for plausible deniability. In my opinion, that Ninja-JiDion conversation was moreso a case of JiDion jokingly performing shock at Ninja just using the word ‘bitch’ alone. And as far as this clip goes (seemingly the one Pokimane was referencing based on the ‘bitches in general’ specificity), Ninja also appeared to be condemning JiDion for the hate raids. Could Ninja be dogwhistling? I dunno, maybe… But there’s thousands of hours worth of Twitch stuff to drudge through and ain’t nobody got time for that!

That brings us to right now! Today on January 18th, Pokimane shared what seems to be a screenshot of a private message from Jessica Belvins (Ninja’s wife) that read ‘We are considering everything defamation of character at this point and are getting our legal team involved’.  The message also had a section claiming that Tyler never reached out to any Twitch reps, but he ‘just said that to stop the harassment in his chat from JiDion’s viewers’.

Pokimane said she’s ‘willing to accept and cannot disprove’ that possibility.

The moral of the story? I wish it had one! Although I’m quite certain by this point this whole situation was a misunderstanding between Imane and Tyler that could’ve been avoided if they just had a chinwag on the topic over a morning cuppa, drama of this variety specifically really does make my head spin. With the internet, it’s simultaneously harder AND easier to just lie about… Anything, really!  But hey, hopefully this was a fun read for anyone more clued-up on these drama-llamas than me.

Hello everyone. I’ve been working at Go2Games for around 3 months. As today’s a bit slow news-wise, thought I’d take a page out of Aslan’s book and write a little on my time with the company.

How does my work… Work? I’m so glad I asked! Barring extenuating circumstances, most of my Go2Games work varies between two types of tasks. One is the comedy news blogs where I showcase my terminal addiction to “Bobbert Kotique”, anti-corporate mockery and highly suggestive poems about Lottie from Animal Crossing! The other kind of task is ‘descrips’, wherein I essentially write slightly re-worded descriptions and information about a list of products on a shared document that (I’m assuming) will be coming to the Go2Games store. For some ungodly reason, I find the descrips harder to burn through, but have been improving with them.

Why the YouTube Fetish? I have a tendency to link to and source YouTubers in alot of my blogs because inserting links from different places helps improve analytics… Somehow. Besides that, I also understand some people can be skeptical of “oh, you heard someone say that in an internet video? That doesn’t sound dodgy in the slightest”. That’s fair enough in a lot of cases, but most of the content creators I reference or enjoy also heavily cite their sources for different claims, which can SOMETIMES be a good way of separating the Weetabix from the chaff grenades. I say sometimes because blokes like Steven Chowder or Carlgon of Schmitt are also big creators who make a song and dance about having citations, but those guys have gotten their intellectual spanking from every lefty YouTuber and their grandma, so won’t dwell on them too much here. Speaking of YouTube, have a look at my channel Top-Not Analysis.

Product Poems? Really? Really, really. This blog branch of Go2Games has to make money somehow and part of that is through linking products on the Go2Games store into blogs. Some things are easier to integrate than others, so I came up with Product Poems as a fun way to circumvent that by tacking them on at the end.

In summary: Working at Go2Games has been a very fruitful and enjoyable experience. My colleagues and higher-ups have been very friendly, I’m glad to say I’ve had the opportunity to work with them.

Given the rising awareness of the D4C‘s of the board at Activision Blizzard, I find this an important and relevant time to discuss allyship (mostly in terms of the gaming sphere, but also more broadly in other topics).

What is allyship: Allyship is the act of showing or giving support to a people or social justice movement. Allyship can apply to anti-racism, anti-fascism, worker’s rights, LGBT+ inclusion, women’s rights and more.

Antifa as a political ideology has been subject to a lot of hostility in America by prominent news outlets (mostly of the Fox variety), so for a proper analysis on antifa as a concept, I recommend watching Abby Thorn’s Philosophy of Antifa. Citations up the wazoo, “BASED and Fact-Pilled af” as they say.

Being an ally takes a lot of reading, watching and thinking about various topics that vary in how well you may know them. Someone knowledgeable about aspects of race and racism may not be as familiar with LGBT+ concepts and discrimination. Someone who knows about both may not be the most aware of how the economy and systematic issues play a role in injustices. We’ll get to introductory outlets in the last two subheadings.

What causes should I ally myself with: Besides the ones listed in the allyship definition section, there are aspects of worker’s rights causes and topics that fall neatly into the wide and wonderful world of gaming. Workplace discrimination is a big problem. There is also discourse on crunch culture (which also effects the anime and manga industries to a degree). Accessibility in gaming for people with physical and mental disabilities is another good cause to stand by.

What is crunch: Crunch culture is when workers have to work extra hours with little to no extra pay, sometimes in Amazonian conditions (and I ain’t talking about the jungle). Naughty Dog is one of the biggest companies that has put its workers through crunch work. Some companies participating in crunch also threaten to leave the names of key designers off the in-game end credits if they leave before production finishes, forcing many to prioritize a salary and their CV over their mental and physical health.

What to do as an ally: Essentially, doing your part however big or small in trying to make the social issues you want fixed to be discussed and possibly improved. Sure, telling your slightly-racist grandpa (or president) that the n-word stopped being a formal term of classification in the 90s is good, but there are other ways of rising awareness of social issues.

You can follow specific channel outlets that discuss the prevalence of issues in the gaming community. Among them, you can follow @ABetterABK and @ABetterUbisoft, which have open letters and petitions pinned to the top of their profiles that can help people from around the world contribute to bettering the toxic workplace cultures of Activision Blizzard and Ubisoft.

I fancy myself a little bit of an auteur at the best of times, so I lean towards the YouTube scene of making political edutainment art as my favorite act of allyship. Long-time readers will know that James Stephanie Sterling is a favorite of mine. You can also organize protest marches, petitions, or try working with a local politician to run on a pro-intersectionality platform.

Intersectionality largely refers to the awareness of how various traits of a person can interact in different scenarios. For example, misogynoir is a term that describes the intersectionality between race and womanhood, giving a name to an issue that specifically affects women and femme-presenting who are also people of color.

For any game devs reading this, consider looking into starting a worker’s union if you feel you’re being mistreated by your boss. That said, you’d also have to try convincing your fellow colleagues that would be a good idea, which can vary in difficulty on a case-by-case basis.

This one is more of a slacktivism pet-peeve of mine, but for the love of God’s boner, please don’t post story images that read “if you’re against X, share this”. If you want to tell people something about a serious issue, just say it! I don’t want Janice Karenson thinking I’m not against racism just because I didn’t share her mood board of Idris Elba photoshopped in front of some BLM-themed graffiti!

… Now I give you an accurate image of my reaction after writing this long-ass section!

On handling backlash to inclusion: Honestly, that topic is going to have to wait for another day. But I will highlight one major warning on the topic! Do not, I repeat, DO NOT default to “google is free” activism! Specifically, the Social Dilemma, a Netflix documentary on social media, explicitly states that Google and search engine results are not the same for everyone! It’s moreso tailored to what drives interaction regardless of factual accuracy, so if you find yourself watching Joe Rogan interview Abigail Shrier one day, you could well end up listening to Paul Joseph Watson and PragerU the next… Which is ironic, because what I’m about to suggest is that you should go onto Google (I swear, I’m going somewhere with this), type in Google Scholar, find the Google Scholar search engine and then look up studies and articles on whatever subjects you want to learn about.

Better Ways To Learn About Allyship Than This… For now, maybe I’ll remake this article as a video three years later and call it a Director’s Cut.

In a shocking turn of events, my first recommendation isn’t a YouTube video, but an article reviewing an event on Allyship in EA Games and the workplace. Comrade EA!?

On a wider scale, we have How Not To Be An Ally and Why Allies Need To Knock by FD The Signifier (pronounced “fid”). While I don’t fully agree with every single criticism of Robert Tolppi (specifically the brief “he’s just a kid” sections), this and his other videos are fun ways of about common pitfalls folks can fall into regarding allyship.

Fan favorite Philosophy Tube did a great breakdown of the games industry in relation to free market ideals, with parts that hit especially hard given the rise of NFT’s.

Another one bites the dust…

Ludwig Ahgren is the latest major Twitch streamer to leave the platform behind, making the switch to YouTube. Ludwig, who in April set a world record for the highest number of subscribers at over 270,000, will now be streaming exclusively at YouTube gaming.

Ludwig achieved the feat at the conclusion of a marathon 31-day streaming event, which began on March 14 and ran for too damn long. In the process, he beat the previous record, held by Tyler “Ninja” Blevins.

The move was announced earlier today by Ryan Wyatt, head of YouTube Gaming, who wrote:

“I’m excited to announce @LudwigAhgren will now be streaming exclusively on @YouTubeGaming.

Our focus is on building a world-class VOD, short-form, and live platform.

And I have to reiterate; we still aren’t done yet! Welcome to the family, Ludwig!”

Harsh, perhaps, given that he built his entire following on Twitch, but given the platform’s recent woes, especially when it comes to copyright, it is also understandable.

He probably wouldn’t make the jump out of charity; YouTube has long thrown serious money at creators to sign them to exclusivity deals, hoping that by drawing big names they can chip away at Twitch’s dominance in the streaming space.

Ludwig follows major streamers TimTheTatman and Dr Lupo, as well as Dr Disrespect whose circumstances were slightly different as he famously received a permanent ban from Twitch.

In other news, October and November have seen some big next-gen titles released, including Call of Duty: Vanguard, Battlefield 2042, FIFA 22, Far Cry 6, and Left 4 Dead’s spiritual successor, Back 4 Blood. In a lawsuit filed by the creators of Roblox (popular free-to-play online children’s game) against one Benjamin Robert Simon (YouTuber ‘Ruben Sim‘) for allegedly leading a ‘cybermob’ that shut down a developer conference, as well as attempts to upload nude photos of himself and Adolf Hitler… Not nude photos of Adolf Hitler, thank god!

The lawsuit was filed in California, with Roblox seeking $1.6 million in damages. The lawsuit also claims Benjamin was banned for a number of years due to racist and homophobic slurs, as well as sexual harassment on Roblox. Considering 99.69% of reports of harassment in online spaces gets swept under the rug, I’m inclined to believe Benny the Jet over here probably stepped over quite a few boundaries to get noticed for that.

“Repeatedly circumventing the technological barriers erected to block Defendant Simon from accessing the Roblox platform after he was permanently banned from the platform and instructing and encouraging others to do the same” – Roblox V Ruben Lawsuit.

The lawsuit also accuses Benjamin of fraud, breach of contract, and tortious interference

In a San-Francisco report in October 2021, Simon De Beauvoir over here thought it would be hi-larious to post false messages on Twitter that police were searching for an Islamic extremist at the Roblox Developers Conference. That’s rich considering he was making that claim on the platform that let Isis have an official account for a time! The false claim lead to a police investigation shutting down the Roblox Developers Conference, costing $50,000.

A series of now-deleted Tweets also show Benjamin glamorizing the YouTube Headquarters shooting of April 3rd 2018.

Roblox has an estimated worth of some $45 billion, but the game does allow content creators to make their own games on the platform and make money from them, so as far as my leftist ass can advocate for capitalism, at least they’re helping budding game creators get their start in a small way… At least, that’s what I would say if it wasn’t for the casual exploitation of budding developers in other ways, but for more on that, check this video on the topic.

SOLAR ASH Pre-Order on Epic Games Store, Fans Wait for PS5, PS4 Pre-Orders

Since Heart Machine Entertainment pushed back SOLAR ASH’s original release date, they’ve now announced that there are pre-orders available on the Epic Games Store for Windows PC, many suspects that PlayStation Pre-orders will soon be available as there has already been a listing on the PlayStation Store France.

Solar Ash, developed by Heart Machine is a fast-paced, action-adventure platformer. So far it’s known for its vibrant graphics and scenery and fast-paced gameplay involved with the unique aesthetic style of the characters, it is a sequel to the pixelated game Hyper Light Drifter. PlayStation has described Solar Ash as a “Journey through a surreal, vivid and highly stylized world filled with mystery, high-speed traversal, endearing characters, and massive enemy encounters.” I’m not surprised, Solar Ash is an exciting must-have on wishlist type game.

Solar Ash Release Date

Solar Ash’s official release date is the 2nd December 2021, which has been clearly stated on the Epic Games Store and PlayStation Store France, while it has yet to be uploaded anywhere else, we can only hope that Solar Ash will be released on PlayStation internationally on the same date. The price is roughly around £30, which is to be expected.

One True King is a Texas-based media and production company founded by popular Twitch streamers Asmongold, Mizkif and Esfand. One True King was named The Biggest Streaming Organisation in August after hitting 25 million hours of combined watch time. October 2021 saw the addition of Cyr to One True King during an anniversary stream alongside a new logo. Most recently, Tectone has joined the company!

Meet Tectone. Tectone is a Canadian twitch streamer and YouTuber who mainly specialises in anime and anime-inspired games like Genshin Impact and Arknights. As of writing, Tectone has nearly 600K followers on Twitch and over 10 million total views. Tectone’s YouTube channel currently sits at 740K subscribers.

While somewhat lesser-known than some of his contemporaries, there’s been some small rumblings of Reddit discourse that they were anticipating another prominent female streamer to join the group. In a SHOCKING turn of events, most of the Twitter reactions (as far as I can tell) seem much more positive, mostly consisting of assorted reaction gifs and phrases communicating excitement like ‘woohoo’, ‘let’s GOOOO’ and ‘pog’.

The Redditeers: Yeah, me saying “things were chill on Twitter” isn’t as view-catching as “what fresh hell is this”, so let’s look at the Reddit comments under the One True King announcement.

On the Positive Side:

• ‘He gets good views on his YouTube channel, he’s [a] little bit bigger then (sic) Mizkif on YouTube, and he doesn’t need girls in his thumbnails. It is a smart business decision on OTK part to sign him’
• ‘A great fit in for OTK’.

On the Roasting Side:

• ‘He looks like the combined version of all the other OTK members’.
• ‘He is their final form’.
• ‘He’s like a white Lacari’ (I’m sure I’d find that hilarious if I knew who that was).

Considering I was having a fun conversation last night with some friends about which YouTubers we’d most want to wife up (which just so happened to lead to Pokimane coming up), I would like to dedicate this blog to my good friend, Melon Brandeux… Not his real name, but roll with it!

Pokimane (real name Imane Anys) is a Moroccan-Canadian YouTuber and Twitch streamer. Pokimane recently announced her new role as co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of the company RTS.

Parasocial relationships and obsessive fan culture has gone from bad to worse thanks in part to the wider accessibility of online spaces. I mean, y’all should watch Misery, it basically predicted the landscape of toxic fandom culture years before Bing existed, let alone Google! For a breakdown on parasocial relationships, I highly recommend the videos on the topic by Philosophy Tube.

Pokimane and Toxic Fans: A fan of Pokimane has been repeatedly making new accounts to continuously ask her invasive personal questions despite being banned multiple times. Well, I say “a fan”, this type of practice is unfortunately more common than you’d think, considering how many people are resorting to progressively more extreme acts to gain the attention of popular figures on online platforms. Literally last month, another Twitch streamer Meowko discussed her experience with a stalker.

Pokimane went over screenshots from the main obsessive fan in question during a ‘Just Chatting’ stream while using the time to discuss obsessive fan culture and the issues of others trying to impose their expectations onto her, though she doesn’t owe them anything.

“You’ve made so many accounts just to ask me the most weird and random questions about my friends, it’s weird, and it’s obnoxious. Like, I love all of my friends dearly, but please stop trying to psychoanalyze or mico-manage my friendships or relationships with others. Or asking so many weird, repetitive, obsessive questions. I live my private life off-stream, okay”.

Pokimane’s Twitch streams total to nearly two billion hours of watch time at time of writing. Unfortunately, moderating and putting a stop to the more hardcore obsessives is very difficult and put solely on the backs of content creators themselves, which is a crying shame. I mean, I’m not any kind of celebrity by any stretch of the word, but I get constantly added up by the same random bots on Instagram and Snapchat, but no matter how many times I report it, BOOM, pops right up a couple days later! At the end of the day, most online platforms don’t take moderation seriously, though I will admit, part of why companies don’t pay much attention to that side of things is because hiring a bloke to manually read through every harassing message and cacophony of dick pics would be seizure-inducing in the best case scenario and cause spontaneous combustion in the worst! Rainbow Six Abstraction set to release January 20th!

Ubisoft (or rather iBhard) has announced in July that upcoming title Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction would be delayed from September release to sometime in January. Now, Ubisoft has announced January 20th as the official release date.

Ubisoft has also reportedly reduced the price of the standard version to $40 (around £30) and the Deluxe Edition to $50 (£37.33), which is simultaneously pleasing and disturbing to me because those are the usual standard prices for most new games! Like… Honey boo boo… Sweetie. Dearest. Toots… We NEED to talk about pricing!

Every copy of the game will also come with 2 Buddy Pass tokens, letting you invite friends without the game to play with you for a 14-day free trial period. Buddy Pass users won’t have access to Assignments, the ranked Maelstrom Protocol mode or the in-game store.

Other handy-dandy features and tidbits on Rainbow Six Extraction will also include:

• Cross-play.
• Cross-progression and cross-save support (lets players team up with friends across Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Amazon Luna, Google Stadia, PC and Ubisoft+).
• The game was originally going to be ‘Rainbow Six Quarantine’, but I’m assuming that wouldn’t have sold as well to certain Karen-adjacent circles getting triggered by the mention of the Q-word!

The Gameplay:

Rainbow Six Extraction will be a first-person shooter based on the Outbreak mode from Rainbow Six Siege, seeing players fight off alien hordes and optionally take on the role of Siege Operator.
