As Christmas looms upon us once more, the rivalry for that Christmas number one spot between Xbox and PlayStation continues. As it stands, it looks like Microsoft will be taking the crown this year, which leads us to ask why exactly this is the case. Are Sony doing something wrong, or is the Xbox just outperforming itself this year?
The $300 Xbox Series S console just outsold the PlayStation 5 during the holiday sales of November. It seems that there are three main reasons as to why this is the case. Firstly, it’s important to remember that its still extremely difficult to find a PS5 to buy at retail.
The demand for the console has certainly not diminished, but the supply just simply isn’t there. This is quite the concern for Sony, especially if they intend to beat Xbox next year. Could we see the demand drop if they’re unable to deliver?
“It’s all about stock,” NPD Group video game analyst Mat Piscatella said. “The console with the most units in market will lead the charts.”
Adversely, the Xbox Series S is widely available in most UK retailers at the time of writing. From Amazon to Tesco, you can pick one up wherever you go. As a result, people are much more likely to get them due to their availability. Despite the fact the Xbox Series X is also just as hard to get as the PS5, the Series S has been doing wonders for the company.
Additionally, the fact the Xbox Series S is a lot cheaper will have swayed some buyers also. Everyone loves a bit of a bargain, so sometimes its really hard to look past one when its right in your face.
Obviously, November sales are an extremely important month for both companies in the lead up to Christmas. Since the original Nintendo Entertainment system, this has always been the case for the industry. Sony will be very disappointed they’ve fallen short this time, but who else do they have to blame but themselves?
Well, it can’t all be Sony’s fault to be fair to them. Microsoft have some of the biggest games debuting on their Game pass, with both Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5 being included in the popular subscription service. PlayStation will certainly be looking to the future to see of a way to use this to their advantage too.
Between the console being in stock, its comparatively low price, and the recent release of some long-awaited games, it’s clear why the Xbox Series S is beating out the PlayStation 5.
