The gaming world exploded yesterday afternoon when news broke Microsoft obtained Activision Blizzard Studios for approximately $69.7 billion. Fans of both PlayStation and Xbox have been left wondering what this could mean for the future of their respective consoles.
Thankfully for users of the Sony console, it seems that Activision Blizzard games will still land on PlayStation consoles. However, Microsoft do have some specific exclusivity ideas for Xbox as well. This is all according to a latest Bloomberg report, which was quoted as saying the exclusivity process is likely to happen ‘once the acquisition nears completion’.
Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, reiterated this message by stating that Microsoft won’t just keeping every piece of Activision Blizzard. He subsequently stressed that he doesn’t want to cause a divide within the gaming community by forcing players to change their console of choice.
“I will just say to players out there who are playing Activision Blizzard games on Sony’s platform: It’s not our intent to pull communities away from that platform and we remained committed to that,” said Spencer in an interview.
Microsoft And Activision- What Does This Mean For The Future?
As previously stated, Microsoft will be acquiring Activision Blizzard, including all of its subsidiary studios and game franchises. Combine this with the recent acquisition of Bethesda too, and it looks like Microsoft are really pushing for top spot in this generation.
Moreover, it looks like the acquisition will add valuable content to the Xbox Game Pass. Spencer previously confirmed that Microsoft will be bringing “as many Activision Blizzard games” as possible, which will also include day-one releases. Obviously, this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, but it is still a nice addition nevertheless.
This news will certainly damage Sony, specifically because they intend to create their own version of the ‘game pass’ in the future. They’ll certainly need to pick up their game after this news, so keep your eyes peeled on what their response could be.
Will Call Of Duty Become An Xbox Exclusive?
One big question which people are concerned about especially is the future of the Call of Duty franchise. Could making new Call of Duty games day-one releases on the Game Pass provide the boost Microsoft need?
Unfortunately for Xbox fans, that doesn’t look like its going to be the case. In fairness, it looks like this could be the right call if Spencer doesn’t want to “uproot communities”. Therefore, it looks likely Microsoft will be limiting single-player Activision Blizzard games to Xbox while keeping games such as Call of Duty: Warzone available on all platforms. That’s a nice balance, isn’t it?
Overall, it certainly looks to be an exciting time to be an Xbox fan! After news that the console beat out its rival last Christmas, things seem to be going well for Microsoft.
