Launching April 20 on the Epic Game Store, a new co-op RPG blending old-school cartoon visuals with modern dungeon-crawling action.

Described by developer Beamdog as a first person swords and sorcery adventure, Mythicforce is a roguelike dungeon-crawling experience set within the world of an 80s fantasy cartoon. The game seeks to capture the look, sound, and ambience from a number of 80s cartoon favourites in the genre. It’s easy to see a lot of inspiration taken from the Dungeons & Dragons’ animated outing, as well as the arcade cult-classic Dragon’s Lair. The game seems to be doing an admirable job bringing together it’s inspirations in a colourful and high energy action game, rendered fully in 3D.

Mythforce

In Mythforce, you play as the titular crew of hunters, mages and rogues who team up to face down an evil force that’s taken over the land. The experience will see up to four players, cooperatively adventuring first-person in the role of either: Victoria the valiant Knight, Rico the charming Rogue, Maggie the wise Mage, and Hawkins the deadly Hunter. Their objective, to storm a colourful cartoon castle packed with “treasure, traps, and terrors”.

The game’s four characters each have their own distinctive class, featuring the vast array of spells and abilities fans of fantasy RPG’s have come to expect. All packaged within frantic first-person Co-op action, reminicent of games like like Warhammer: Vermintide, or Left 4 Dead. Mythforce’s rogue-lite structure means adventurers will be forced back to the start on death, with the castle reconfiguring itself on every attempt. All won’t be lost, however, as players are able to use a “meta-progression system” to level up between runs.

Beamdog is opting to go the early access route with Mythforce, the initial release including the afformentioned four playable heroes and its first episode, Bastion of the Beastlord. But the devloper promises new weapons and enemies are to be added as development continues. The game is expected to remain in early access for around a year, with major content patches introducing the likes of new episodes and other “heftier” features, arriving “every few months”.

Beamdog’s aquisition

Behind the scenes, the games developer Beamdog have recently been aquired by publisher Aspyr Media. Aspyr is best known for its Star Wars remasters and will take on the task of publishing Mythforce. The publisher claimed Beamdog will operate as an “independent studio” within Aspyr. In an interview, Aspyr CEO Ted Staloch said that “we look forward to seeing them realize their ambition with Mythforce while maximizing the long-term potential of an incredible archive of classic games.”. This news might suggest down the road, Beamdog could be tasked with more legacy projects as well. Beamdog has the experience, having made modern enhanced editions of two Baldur’s Gate games, Planescape: Torment, Neverwinter Nights and more. Their experience with these titles, was further bolstered by the fact that BioWare co-founder Trent Oster was also a co-founder of Beamdog. Not the first major name from the company to seek new horizons.

For more news and updates on Mythforce, be sure to check out it’s page on the Epic Games store, where it will release exclusively for PC on April 20.

Since 2007, the Mass Effect series has become somewhat of a cultural phenomenon within the gaming world. The original trilogy was greeted with both critical and commercial success. The focus of this praise was put on the games’ narrative, characters, voice acting and world building. Could this all be translated over into a television show? Clearly one former Bioware writer thinks not.

David Gaider was the lead writer on another Bioware franchise, the Dragon Age series. Unfortunately, he left his position at the company in 2016, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a lot to say about his former employers. Speaking on Twitter, he addressed recent rumours that Amazon Studios are in the process of gathering the rights to a Mass Effect TV series. This is what he had to say upon the matter:

“I’m relieved to see that the Mass Effect / Amazon deal is for a potential TV series and not a movie,” Gaider said. “Even so, the possibility (and likewise for Dragon Age) makes me cringe just a little, unlike many fans who appear… excited?

“For starters, Mass Effect and Dragon Age have a custom protagonist, meaning said TV show will need to pick whether said protagonist will be male or female. Boom, right off the bat you’ve just alienated a whole bunch of the built-in fan base who had their hopes up”.

Of course, this is a very good starting point from the lead writer. Alienating your fan base before your show has even started is a dangerous approach, especially with a franchise as revered as this.

Mass Effect TV Show: Doomed To Failure?

David Gaider had a lot to say upon the situation, showing he clearly feels passionate about his former company. In regards to the series protagonist, he evidently had a lot more to discuss than just their gender.

“Secondly, those protagonists are designed to be a bit of a blank slate, one that the player fills out with their decisions. That’s not going to work for a passive medium. So, suddenly, the protagonist will have their own personality, and their own story. That will be weird”.

“You think I’m wrong? Consider just how much of the story is off-loaded onto the companions. They are the cyphers through which the player gets most of their emotional engagement from. On their own, the Dragon Age and Mass Effect protagonists are… well, pretty boring. That’s not going to fly”.

Once again, David makes an extremely valid point. Part of the the franchises intrigue is that we get to grow alongside these characters, who are essentially ourselves transformed into the game. Not only this, but the characters our protagonists meet on their adventures have become iconic parts of the series. Obviously, David has his concerns about how they will be handled.

“And think of those companions. Think of how much the fanbase is attached to them. Now consider the fact that there is no way in hell any single story could encompass them all equally. Think of the howls of rage when companion X is relegated to a cameo, or not there at all”.

“Having a TV show instead of a movie allows for more companion options, sure, but consider your own playthrough: only a handful of them had any meaningful presence in a single game. That will need to be the case for this story, to maintain coherence. A few companions, one romance”.

David Believes The Plot Doesn’t Make For Good TV Viewing

As previously mentioned, the side characters are very much important components of the franchise for fans. The likes of Mordin Solus, Urdnot Wrex and Thane Krios serve as great companions for our protagonist to bounce off. As such, David believes their lack of screen time could expose the series’ pretty generic plot.

“Those plots had to take into account the player’s agency. They were kind of the shell upon which that player’s emotional engagement was delivered – usually through the companions and the choices themselves. Choice heightened engagement. Interactivity was the star, not the plot.

“Take all that out, lose most of the companions, and you potentially end up with a pretty run-of-the-mill fantasy or science-fiction show, one where a lot of the built-in audience has possibly been turned into outraged, howling malcontents before it’s even released.

“All that is, of course, if the Dragon Age or Mass Effect series is mishandled. I can think of any number of ways it could be done better, but that involves doing more than a strict adaptation, and that comes with its own complications”.

Despite all this, David does still wish the best for the show, even though it may come off as quite sarcastic.

“Anyhow, good luck to the showrunners. They’ll need it.”

It’s a sad day for Bioware fans. After twenty-three years, it has now been revealed that Matt Goldman, senior creative director of Dragonage 4, has unfortunately left the company.

The announcement came through Bioware boss Gary Mckay, who sent out the following email to his staff.

“Hi everyone, I hope you are well. I’m writing to inform you all that Matt Goldman is leaving Bioware. We have mutually agreed to part ways, and his last day is today”.

This will undoubtedly have fans of the series feeling slightly nervous, but Gary went onto explain they shouldn’t have any worries.

“We understand that Matt’s departure has an impact on you as well as the game’s development. Rest assured our commitment to a high-quality Dragon Age game has not waivered, and we will not ship a game that is not up to BioWare’s standards. We, including EA’s executive team, have absolute confidence in the leadership here at the studio and the people working on this game to carry forward our vision”.

This will come as a relief to many fans who have been excited by the games recent teaser trailers and concept art.

The question still remains, why has Matt Goldman left?

Unfortunately, we don’t quite have the answer to that riddle. Joining Bioware in 1998, he worked as an artist on games such as Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights before landing himself a position amongst the Dragon Age team. After plenty years worth of experience, he took over from Mike Laidlaw as creative lead on Dragon Age 4 in 2017. The title has had a troubled development period thus far, and this doesn’t look like its going to stop that trend.

Nevertheless, we are still excited for the games eventual release. For those unfamiliar with the franchise, Dragon Age 4 is an upcoming role-playing video game. During Gamescom opening Night live, we were treated with some Dragon Age 4 knowledge with exclusive behind-the-scenes look what to expect in the upcoming adventure. It was introduced as “imagining new ways of using next-generation technology to bring the world of Dragon Age to life”, but unfortunately the game is still was still in its early stage.

Various other Bioware developers who have been working on the game have praised it so far. The sneak peaks of beautiful concept art and the slight bit of game footage we received is certainly pointing us in a positive direction.

Still plenty of time to wait it seems. But we’ll be here to do just that.

The Original Mass Effect was released back in 2007, and told the story of Commander Shepard. A story that would go on to span 3 games, with your choices from each game carrying over from one to the next. A decade later, in 2017, Bioware followed up the series with mass effect: Andromeda which… was not so well received.

Today, a report from deadline has suggested that the series may be getting a tv adaptation through amazon studios.

This is no-doubt coming off the heels of Netflix adapting League of Legends as “Arcane”. Amazon studios seems hell bent on taking a crack at adapting mass effect to a wider audience. As of right now, neither Amazon or EA have actually agreed to the project, but the report from deadline does suggest a deal could come about in the not too distant future.

As of right now what this series will be is unclear. Its possible that this could be an original story set within the universe of mass effect, which would probably be for the better in my opinion, or this could be a film or TV adaptation of the mass effect games. A film was in production briefly in 2010, being produced by Warner Bros. and Legendary studios, best known for the recent Godzilla films and pacific rim.

Despite interest in adapting the story of the game, I personally feel it wouldnt work. Mass effect is all about the choice aspect. Everyones playthrough is different, with everyone choosing different relationships and places to go. Unless it was A “bandersnatch” choose your own adventure type situation, the preferable option is to do a story set within the world, but not a direct adaptation.

EA and Bioware have recently been teasing a potential new game in the series, this one set back within the milky way galaxy and set centuries after the end of mass effect three. While right now this is little more than rumour, the next few years may prove to be a bit of a renaissance for mass effect fans.

You can pick up mass effect legendary edition, a collection of all 3 main trilogy games, for PS4 from go2games.com

BioWare has announced the release date for the new Star Wars: The One Republic expansion

Star Wars fans are looking forward to celebrating Star Wars: The One Republic‘s 10th anniversary this year.

The multiplayer online role-playing game based in the Star Wars universe was released on December 20, 2011, and to celebrate, the game is receiving a massive expansion titled The Legacy of the Sith which will be released on December 14, announced by its developer, BioWare.

The Legacy of the Sith

The Legacy of the Sith will send players to the planet Manaan, the water world from Knights of the Old Republic where you might meet some non-friendly sharks. This time though, players will be on Manaan to find out what renegade sith Darth Malgus is up to, as well as catching up with various returning story characters like the aforementioned Tau Idair, Arn Peralun, Major Anri, Lana Beniko, and Darth Rivix. There’s also a new flashpoint on a snow planet called Elom and released shortly after, an operation called R-4 Anomaly set on a research base run by a Sith cult.

Star Wars: The Old Republic will also be receiving an update at the same time that will include a new combat style system. The new update will allow players to choose combat abilities of different classes from level one, rather than having to wait until they hit level 10 and unlock an advanced class.

In preparation for The Legacy of the Sith, BioWare released The Old Republic classic cinematic trailers in 4K versions. It started with the Deceived trailer first, but since then has seen the ‘Return‘, ‘Hope‘, ‘Sacrifice‘, and ‘Betrayed‘ trailers receiving the same treatment.

The Legacy of the Sith expansion will be out on December 14 for PC.

The Force is strong with Disney Star Wars games at the moment. In the last few years we’ve had Jedi Fallen Order, Star Wars Squadrons and Star Wars Battlefront II. In the upcoming years we can expect to see new LEGO games, KOTOR remaster and much much more.

However, there once was a gaming period before Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012. Whilst that may feel like a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, the games back then are still revered by many fans to this day. One such example of this is Star Wars: The Old Republic, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. We know, we can’t believe it either.

The successful MMORPG followed up upon the similarly successful Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic games. It added to both the mythos and gameplay elements by allowing you a wider variety of character creation. Choosing from a Jedi, Bounty Hunter or Sith and taking on this large-scale Star Wars adventure was an experience people would never forget.

In order to celebrate this special occasion, BioWare has released a new 4K remaster of one Star Wars: The Old Republic‘s original trailers. Before we go into anymore detail, have a quick look at what you think about it below:

‘Deceived’ Trailer Shows Star Wars At It’s Best

Originally released on June 1 2009, Blur Studios trailer has gone down as a classic in the Star Wars community. It features the extremely popular yet non-canon Sith Lord, Darth Malgus, and his assault on the Jedi Temple. Coruscant has never looked this stunning outside of the prequels.

The then beautiful clashing of dark and light provided glimpses of Star Wars spectacle which at the time had not been seen in years. This is exactly why the trailers have become so iconic to many members of the Star Wars fan base. ‘Deceived’ undoubtedly holds up to this day but with these graphical enhancements it really couldn’t look any better.

Not only this, but Bioware have made plans to continue re-releasing the rest of The Old Republic’s trailers in 4K. It appears that Blur Studios other trailer, ‘Hope’, will be part of these plans. We certainly can’t wait to see that one either, and look forward to giving Blur Studio great credit once more. Since the Old Republic trailers, they’ve worked on many other titles such as the remastered cutscenes of Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo Wars 2 and Titanfall. An impressive portfolio indeed.

Now if you’re looking for another ultimate Star Wars experience, then pre-order the Skywalker Saga right now! We’re so excited for this one, and any Star Wars fan should be too!

Now, this is not a hundred percent confirmed; this report actually stems from the LinkedIn profile of Daniel Nordlander, former lead player designer at BioWare. Nordlander’s profile lists Dragon Age as a title they worked on across “PS5/Xbox Series X+S/PC,” with no references to the older consoles. That’s in contrast to Nordlander’s previous work; as lead combat designer on Anthem, they list PS4, Xbox One, and PC as the relevant platforms.

It is unsurprising for BioWare to look to leave the older consoles behind. Dragon Age 4 is approximated to have a 2023 release; by this time, we will be deep into the next generation of consoles, and we would have gotten past the bulk of this supply shortage. Therefore, it is plausible to exclude old generation consoles altogether due to the length of time until the game actually launches. It would also make it tricky for BioWare to push the PS5 and Xbox Series X limits while still getting the game to run well on older consoles.

While Dragon Age 4 might not be coming to last-gen consoles, EA and BioWare haven’t left those who haven’t managed to grab some new tech behind just yet. Mass Effect: Legendary Edition arrived for both generations back in May, and Battlefield 2042 is also set to launch on PS4 and Xbox One, albeit with a few technical limitations, such as smaller multiplayer matches. The nature of those games means they’re unlikely to test hardware limits as much as a major RPG, but it seems you’ve got a bit longer to enjoy your older consoles.

In other news, October has seen some big next-gen titles being released, including the likes of FIFA 22, Far Cry 6 and Left 4 Dead’s spiritual successor, Back 4 Blood.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is coming up to celebrate its 10th anniversary as the only free-to-play MMO that puts you at the centre of your very own Star Wars saga, and what better way to celebrate this than by getting a new expansion later this year.

The new expansion, titled Legacy of the Sith, was unveiled in a live stream on Youtube yesterday where the developers BioWare discussed in detail what fans could expect from it.

Legacy of the Sith Gameplay

The new expansion will send players to the darkest depths and furthest reaches of the galaxy, battling for control on the aquatic planet Manaan, which houses a vital medical resource in its underwater facilities, across separate Imperial and Republic storylines

Players will also have the chance to explore a ruined Sith fortress on the planet Elmon in another new storyline that is available as single-player and multiplayer Flashpoint, as well as a new R-4 Anomaly Operation that tasks players with taking down an obscure Sith cult. Legacy of the Sith will also include the next Galatic Season titled “Shadows of the Underworld”.

Players can expect the level cap to increase from 75 to 80 as well as a new feature called Combat Styles that will give players greater customization options on the battlefield.

Play as a Trooper wielding a Sniper Rifle, or a Sith Inquisitor with a lightsaber in each hand, or even secretly use Dark Side powers while posing as a member of the Jedi Order. Loadouts will increase your ability to customize, allowing you to swap between playstyles and gear with a click. – BioWare.

The expansion is due to hit the public test server in the near future, ahead of its holiday 2021 launch and will be free to current subscribers.

BioWare is donning Legacy of the Sith’s Launch as the beginning of a year-long celebration, so there might be some more surprises in store for the MMO. It also said it won’t be showing anything at EA Play Live, but here is a list of what else you can expect.

The PS3 & Xbox 360 will not be receiving the Dragon Age: Inquisition DLC anymore

The developer of Dragon Age: Inquisition, BioWare, have announced that they will no longer support the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game with downloadable content. This news was announced on the Dragon Age blog, where BioWare had said, “all future Dragon Age: Inquisition DLC will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One only.”

BioWare has also introduced the ability to export saves and move them over, an an attempt to encourage players to move to the versions released for the latest consoles. “We designed our Save Importer feature to help make the transition to a new console as easy as possible,” it explained.

Creative director of the game, Mike Laidlaw, has also stated that more story DLC is in the works. “We’re not quite done with story content for DAI just yet,” Laidlaw said on Twitter. However, there is one character who will not feature in any of the story DLC to come, and that is the Hero of Ferelden from Dragon Age: Origins.

“I’ve already said that the Hero of Ferelden will not be appearing. Sorry!” Laidlaw has said “I do not feel the HOF would work well as an NPC.”
