Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: A Neon coloured miracle.

When you bring up the word Cyberpunk or Edgerunners in conversation in today’s day and age, you’re bound to conjure several images in people’s minds. Most would think of pictures of chromed-up bikers with monoband sunglasses and neon flooded streets. Those old enough to remember the original role-playing game will probably smile at fond memories of a rich world and characters. But say Cyberpunk to a gamer, and they would probably scowl, remembering the hype train around Cyberpunk 2077 derailing into a bug-filled crash on launch.

That is, until now. September saw the release of the anime “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” on Netflix to critical acclaim from the anime community; Studio Trigger’s short ten-episode foray into the streets of Night City has served as a metaphorical adrenaline shot for what many saw as a slowly fading fandom. Without going into spoiler territory, the anime follows the path of David Martinez, a young Night City resident with a particular talent for enduring augmentation at a far higher threshold than most are capable of before being sent on an adventure within the setting.

That setting is perhaps the single most universally agreed upon masterstroke of CD Projekt Red’s 2020 RPG, a strong base that required time to correct that most would not give it. But correct and develop, they did, slowly but surely bringing 2077 up to the standard that lived up to the hype garnered during its fraught development cycle, even if by that point, most players had left the game for greener pastures. However, Edgerunners has changed that, using a combination of Studio Trigger’s expert writing and animation within the established world of 2077 to catch the attention of an audience on Netflix and, after showing them just how rich of a world Night City presents, sets them loose to play the game again.

With the addition of the Edgerunners update (patch 1.6), all augmentations, weapons and playstyles shown off by the characters in the anime can be emulated to perfection in-game, meaning that new and returning players alike can burn the city like their new favourite cyberpunks. And not only is it possible to rule the night as David or Rebecca, but it’s also optimal.

The Statistics

When you pair that with a deeply emotional and fast-paced show with high-quality acting from the likes of Giancarlo Esposito, it shows the audience what is possible within the setting and game, inspiring a colossal upswing in player count.

As shown in the above image, in August of 2022, the average player count for Cyberpunk 2077 was approximately 10,000 with a peak of 18,700, but with the release of Edgerunners, the average player count has more than doubled with the peak playerbase at a staggering 86,000 on Steam alone (Source: Steam Charts). As the show grows bigger, quickly becoming a classic, the word of mouth of Cyberpunk disseminated amongst well-known gaming personalities, bowling over those like the auteur Hideo Kojima by the show’s quality which bleeds over into the game itself:

What does this mean for Cyberpunk 2077 and its future? The playerbase is quickly returning or discovering the world is much better than when they left it and having much more fun with the game than was possible. With more updates like the Edgerunner update on the horizon, there is the incentive and proof that not only is 2077 worth sinking time into and will keep expanding in the coming months and years. It’s safe to say that Cyberpunk Edgerunners is a beacon of showing just how much story and setting content and quality the game can provide, dragging 2077 back from the edge of obscurity and into the neon-drenched light of a cult classic.

Cyberpunk 2077 has been dividing fans ever since its initial release. However, there’s one thing that most players can certainly agree on; the Night City is pretty amazing. It’s a truly immersive open world environment to delve into, which has given one idea to some modders.

What could that be, we hear you ask? Well, it would just be an unbelievable feature if you were able to explore the diverse landscape using a VR headset. Luckily for us, it looks like well-known modder Luke Ross seems to be working upon just that. It also looks like it could be coming to us sooner than you’d expect too!

“If nothing goes wrong, I’d say it should come out in January” says Ross. I know what you’re thinking. Surely that’s a bit premature for a mod which will undoubtedly be a difficult task to produce. On the other hand, Ross seems confident he is able to complete the project, so let’s put our trust in him I say. Interestingly, if he does manage to pull this off, it will be released before CD Projekt Red’s own current-gen upgrade for the game.

Cyberpunk 2077 To Join Long List Of Modders Achievements

This isn’t Luke Ross’ first rodeo when it comes to adding VR mods. Alongside Cyberpunk 2077, he has created high-quality VR mods for both Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2. Both these games offer first-person perspective features, so Luke Ross explains that does help when producing these mods.

“One major bonus about CP2077 is that it’s already played in first person, which is very good for VR immersiveness, unlike for example the Mafia Trilogy where I had to implement my own ‘fake-first-person’ camera”.

“Now that my modding framework is approaching some level of maturity, I can probably release one game per month (on average),” Ross continues. “Of course that depends on the specific challenges that each game poses, and there’s always a possibility that a certain game turns out not to be moddable at all due to some unforeseen issues.”

On the other hand, Ross does acknowledge that there could be some issues. This is because Cyberpunk is already littered with a variety of issues, which suggests it may not be able to handle the addition of VR. Whilst the game has received several updates, it still has a few problems which they have not addressed. Add VR on top of them, well it could be a disaster waiting to happen. We’ll just have to wait and see.

The post Cyberpunk 2077 VR Mod Before Current-Gen Update first appeared on Get2Gaming.

The Witcher franchise could have turned out very differently…

Speaking to The Gamer in a recent interview, former lead narrative designer Artur Ganszyniec, who worked on the original The Witcher game back in the mid-2000s, has informed us of some interesting details regarding the development of the game, which influenced its success up to now.

Artur explained how the original Witcher title was meant to be twice as long, with a host of additional locations and characters, including a new protagonist named Berengar. Still, this ambition was limited by the size of their budget. However, he explains how this actually, in turn, added to the richness of the storytelling.

“We had to cut them due to budget constraints,” Ganszyniec explains, adding that it was the best thing that could happen, as they “had to find a way to tell the story using a smaller cast of characters.” This would ultimately make The Witcher more “concise and emotional,” says the former lead narrative designer, adding that however stressful things might have been at the time, it all worked out for the best.

The player’s deep connection and understanding with the main characters are definitely part of what makes The Witcher franchise unique and a truly immersive experience.

It’s an interesting anecdote from a former developer on the original Witcher game, and we’d highly recommend reading the full interview for an extensive deep dive into the creation of a series that would eventually aspire to ‘modern classic’ status for CD Projekt Red in The Witcher 3 eight years later.

You can play The Witcher right now on PC if you’ve yet to experience the origins of CD Projekt Red’s series. As for The Witcher 3, though, CD Projekt Red recently revealed that they would be delaying the new-gen upgrade of the 2015 RPG to some point in 2022. While Geralt’s new-gen overhaul with 4K visuals and 60 frames per second gameplay was initially meant to launch this year, we’ll be waiting a while longer to step back into the Witcher’s shoes on PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S.

The post The Witcher Was Improved By Smaller Budget Says Devs first appeared on Get2Gaming.

CD Projekt Red – the studio behind The Witcher games series – has announced its acquisition of The Molasses Flood. The US studio is best known for survival titles such as The Flame in the Flood.

As part of the CD Projekt group, The Molasses Flood will work on an “ambitious project” that’s “based on one of CD Projekt’s IPs.”

In a statement published as part of the acquisition announcement, President and joint CEO of CD Projekt Red, Adam Kiciński, said, “We’re always on the lookout for teams who make games with heart. The Molasses Flood share our passion for video game development, they’re experienced, quality-oriented, and have great technological insight. I’m convinced they will bring a lot of talent and determination to the Group.”

This is CD Projekt Red’s second acquisition this year, after it acquired multiplayer specialist studio and long-standing development partner, Digital Scapes, back in March. The arrangement seems to be quite different, though. Unlike Digital Scapes, The Molasses Flood will keep its name and while it will work in “close cooperation” with CD Projekt Red, it will keep its “current identity” and not be merged with existing teams.

In its own statement, The Molasses Flood said that CD Projekt “made it clear that they weren’t looking to simply absorb [them]” and that they’ll “get to keep making games based on the same principles that have always guided [them]”.

CD Projekt Red and The Molasses Flood have kept what the studio will be working on a secret. We know only that it’s “a completely new game in the universe of an existing CD Projekt IP”. Really, that likely means that the “ambitious project” is going to be a spin-off of either The Witcher series or Cyberpunk 2077.

The emphasis on the studio maintaining its identity suggests they will be bringing their own twist to whatever they create with CD Projekt Red.

The Molasses Flood is hiring for the project and there are several postings on the developer’s site at the moment. However, minimal information can be gathered from this. A listing for a Lead Narrative Designer favours “experience with big, unwieldy, high word count, endless side content type games”, while calls for Lead Gameplay and Engine Programmers say that experience of shipping a multiplayer game would be a plus.

The post CD Projekt Red’s new studio has begun a new project first appeared on Get2Gaming.

Delays, delays, delays. We seem to be getting hit with them left, right and centre at the moment! After a nine-year development cycle however, this next one doesn’t surprise me massively. Cyberpunk 2077, a game known for its delays, has been struck with yet another, with its next-gen update now set to be released in early 2022 rather than later this year as originally intended.

Unfortunately, this means that Xbox Series X and PS5 console owners will have to wait a few more months before they can enjoy the complete next-gen experience. The revelation comes in the form of a CD Projekt Red investor update, which warns that the Cyberpunk 2077 upgrade will now be released in Q1 2022 (January, February, or March) at the suggestion of those in charge of the project.

The next-generation upgrade to CD Projekt’s highly successful The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has also been put back to Q2 2022. (April, May, June). Given that Cyberpunk 2077 was delayed many times and still released in a poor form, we wouldn’t be surprised if the next-generation update was pushed back even more to prevent further fan criticism.

Delays are nothing new in gaming, and by now, fans of Cyberpunk 2077 will be more than accustomed to seeing the famous yellow backdrop baring bad news about more delays.

I feel like developers are entitled to take as much time as they need on a project. Yes, delays can be frustrating, but even more frustrating is trying to play a game that is broken on release. Giving devs the time they need to see a project through to completion is important to avoid this. With the constraints the pandemic put on studios too, it only makes sense that there would be delays.

I would be more than willing to stand by this, had CD Projekt Red released a good game. But they didn’t, as we are all aware. However, the fact that the delays didn’t result in a good game added insult to injury in the case of CD Projekt Red’s sci-fi RPG; Cyberpunk 2077 still released as a glitchy mess that was hardly playable on the PS4 or Xbox One. The issue was so terrible that it was briefly removed from the PlayStation platform.

Hopefully this will be the only delay we see in terms of getting next-gen upgrades for both titles, but with their rocky release last time it makes sense that they’d want to devote the extra time to ensuring that they are not trying to sell a buggy mess again. Fingers crossed that all goes smoothly, and they make up for their shortcomings last time.

Dice and its general manager Oskar Gabrielson have officially decided to delay releasing the much-anticipated Battlefield 2042. Initially set for an October 22nd release and building up momentum for the release with teasing YouTube videos and snippets of gameplay. It may be delayed, but it could be worse. The new release is set for just under a month apart, on November 19th 2021. Dice confirmed the news in a tweet stating,

“we’ve made the decision to shift the launch of Battlefield 2042. The game will now be released worldwide on November 19th, 2021.”

The pandemic has impacted various areas of global ongoings, and the gaming sector is clearly not immune to this. So the need for the development team to be in physical contact seems vital to bring the community a Battlefield game that everyone can be thrilled by on the day of launch without digging its way out of a bug-riddled release. Not all bad news for Battlefield fans though as Dice proceeded to explain that,

The need for a smooth entry into the mainstream gamer’s hands can be remembered through the launch of Cyberpunk 2077. A total shamble when released, especially for the previous generation of consoles. With the shortage of next-gen consoles, this was what many of the eager fans were experiencing on. Cyberpunk lost a lot of its player base within a month, not improving too much throughout the year 2021. Lessons were learned throughout the industry through the failure of CDPR here and it can only be for the better.

Hopefully, the delay can mean smooth sailing for the game’s launch, and fans, along with the developers, will be able to enjoy it. I, for one, am all for the delay if the time is needed, and my copy is pre-ordered, which you can do here.

The modders, Blumster, Nightmarea, and rfuzzo, join the cause…

Members of the Cyberpunk 2077 modding community are joining CD Projekt Red to work on backend Cyberpunk 2077 projects and modding support. The news circulated quickly on Twitter after a screenshot of the team’s discord announcement was posted online, but CD Projekt Red has yet to issue an official statement.

The announcement on Cyberpunk’s modding discord reads, “we are extremely pleased to announce that Blumster, Nightmarea, rfuzzo, and I will be joining CDPR under my and Nightmarea’s company… We will be working on various projects related to the Cyberpunk 2077 backend and the game’s modding support. We are really excited for this, and we really hope we can help to bring Cyberpunk 2077 to the next level!”

This team is responsible for projects like WolvenKit, which has been used to build mods in CD Projekt Red games like The Witcher 3 for years. The devs more recently added support for Cyberpunk 2077, and given the game’s still-limited official mod support, it’s been an essential tool for that game’s mod community.

In other Cyberpunk-related news, data miners have uncovered plans for added multiplayer features alongside two downloadable game expansions. CD Projekt Red has seemingly done a U-turn on their plans for Cyberpunk’s multiplayer to be a standalone title.

The game also received its first DLC as the title continues to gain newfound stability.

CD Projekt Red’s plans for Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer features and at least two game expansions.

Cyberpunk 2077 is hot off of the release of its largest patch to date, with version 1.3 dropping last week. The update brought more than 40GB worth of changes on PC and brought the game’s first DLC (purely cosmetic).

A content creator Tyler McVicker, went into a deep dive of 1.3, finding that the update made significant changes to Cyberpunk and its engine. However, more significantly, Tyler identified new references to a multiplayer and future expansions in a datamine of the game’s executable.

The game’s files allegedly list at least two expansions, alongside build states for “multiplayer gyms” and testing. There is also a mention of “old” multiplayer modes, which likely refers to the original plans for a Cyberpunk online game.

In January 2020, CD Projekt first suggested its Cyberpunk multiplayer project would be a standalone release rather than an add-on; with Kiciński confirming this last November stating  it would be “a separate dedicated production, a big production”, adding, “We think about it as a standalone project.”

However, Kiciński released a video announcing a recalculation of their online plans, stating: “Previously we hinted that our next triple-A would be a multiplayer Cyberpunk game, but we have decided to reconsider this now… Given our new, more systematic and agile approach, instead of primarily focusing on one big online experience or game, we are focusing on bringing online into all of our franchises one day.”

CD Projekt later hinted that it would add online elements to its future titles through incremental development. Therefore, this week’s datamines suggest that Cyberpunk will be continuously updated to add such multiplayer functionality.

The first details of the originally planned Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer modes were seemingly uncovered by dataminers in January 2021. References to Heists and Deathmatch multiplayer modes were spotted in the game’s executable file.

The Heist related code suggested players may choose from various character classes in a co-op mission-based game mode.

I must mention that, as always, with leaks from external sources, you must take them with a pinch of salt. However, this leak is from a respectable source so there is ample reason to expect multiplayer features of some sort coming to Cyberpunk 2077 down the line.

As for the Cyberpunk expansion packs, CDPR previously suggested Cyberpunk would receive more than the two full story expansions, and 16 DLC packs, similar to that of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, following its release in May 2015. Therefore, the discovery of code related to these expansions is no surprise.

The post Cyberpunk Datamine Suggests Both Multiplayer And Expansions Are Coming first appeared on Get2Gaming.

Inside the upcoming 1.3 Update, CD Projekt RED confirms the first free DLC for Cyberpunk 2077, including a red Akira style jacket for V.

It has been a long and strange journey for Cyberpunk 2077, with some unmatched highs and lows; starting with a well-known catastrophic launch and being removed from the PlayStation Store entirely, then reaching a ‘satisfactory’ state and being added back onto the Store with a warning, and then finally, going on to top recent PS4 sales. It has not been an easy road for the developers. CD Projekt Red has been continously plugging away at the game with various patches and updates, desperately trying to correct their shortcomings. As a result of this constant work requirement, any form of DLC was the last thing on their mind. However, Cyberpunk is now set to receive its first wave of DLC with update 1.3.

According to the recently released patch notes for Update 1.3, Cyberpunk 2077 players will find three pieces of free DLC from the game’s Additional Content menu. Like the studio did with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the first round of free content is purely cosmetic, including two jackets for V, with one looking like the red jacket from Akira, a new Johnny Silverhand outfit, as well as a free car. Purely cosmetic… a little bit of an anti-climax. I had hoped for some new content to play through, but at least it’s something.

While Johnny’s outfit can be enabled from the Cyberpunk 2077 Additional Content menu, which replaces his default look, the Multilayered Syn-Leather Deltajock and Luminescent Punk Jackets can be found in V’s stash at his apartment. However, these items won’t be available until the player has completed ‘The Ride’ mission and received a message from Viktor. The jackets are considered Rare/Iconic quality and can be crafted to a higher quality.

As for the car, the Archer Quartz “Bandit” can be unlocked or purchased, depending on choices made by the player after finishing the Ghost Town quest and receiving a message from Dakota or Rogue. For those who have yet to receive the message, players will need to be inside the Badlands, move further away from Dakota’s workshop and wait a few days to be contacted.

Update 1.3 will also make some gameplay changes. The hefty patch includes hundreds of changes from minor fixes to larger quality of life improvements, such as the ability to respec characters at a much-reduced cost.

Fans, of course, will be happy to receive some form of DLC, alongside a wealth of game improvements; but we are really still waiting on the true next-generation versions of the game, as well as any details on the upcoming paid expansions. Hopefully, neither is too far away.

Cyberpunk is still kicking…

After its famously bad release in December, Cyberpunk 2077 seems to be making a comeback. Following its catastrophic release condition, it was removed from the PS store. We recently reported that it had been re-instated back onto Sony’s digital store with a warning for PS4 players. This warning seems to have not stopped people from picking up the game as Cyberpunk took home the gold as PS4’s most purchased game for June. The data comes from Sony’s PlayStation blog, which lists the top-selling games for PS5 and PS4, as well as the top-performing free-to-play games. In the PS4 section, Sony notes that Cyberpunk 2077 was the top-selling game for both the U.S./Canada and European markets.

This comes as a surprise due to the state Cyberpunk was in, particularly for last-generation consoles. Cyberpunk 2077 had been off the PlayStation Store for about six months until late June where it reappeared. This happened after the game received a slew of updates that focused on its performance, especially on the last generation of video game consoles. CD Projekt RED now recently described the game’s newfound stability as ‘satisfactory’. Even if it is satisfactory, it is still surprising that PS4 players jumped back into the game with such little hesitation. Perhaps there is still some life in Night City.
