New generation gaming is about to take off…

There haven’t been many exciting releases for the new generation console thus far, so for PS5 owners, it has been a slow burn up until now. You will be happy to know that this is due to change shortly, with the wealth of upcoming games being released in the second half of 2021. Many of these games were revealed across the last month or so throughout the various ongoing gaming showcases (e.g. E3’s individual showcases, EA’s Spotlight Series + Play Live, Sony’s State of Play etc.). As always, E3 this year was packed with new releases and revelations fans could expect for a variety of different video game franchises (If you missed our breakdown for the event, you can check it out here). Yet sometimes news surrounding the event can be swept under the radar, just like this piece of news.

Yes, Bethesda has confirmed Inon Zur is putting together the score for its highly anticipated sci-fi epic Starfield. 

The composer confirmed he would be working on the sci-fi game back in June on his website, stating he would be working with Bethesda once more. He expresses that he considers it to be an honour to work on the game’s score, adding that he admires and appreciates the entire team behind Bethesda for entrusting it to him.

Zur also describes his composition efforts as having a “unique, classical sci-fi direction” and you can hear a snippet of his work in the trailer released at E3, as well as the second trailer “The Journey Begins”, which teases concept art and behind-the-scenes footage.

The sentiments go both ways as Bethesda’s director and executive producer Todd Howard expressed Zur is a “good friend and long time collaborator” and describes what Zur has done so far for the game has been “beautiful and wonderous”, adding he cannot wait to share the score with the fans.

Inon Zur has composed the soundtracks for many epic games in the past: Baldur’s Gate 2, SOCOM 2, Dragon Age: Origins, and Fallout 4 just to name a few. Yet this will be his first plunder into AAA sci-fi, with Starfield already being compared to Halo, Mass Effect, and Destiny.

Get ready for the next battle, one last time…

In the two-and-a-half years that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been out, we have received 11 DLC characters. Each character belonging to different game titles and series. Examples include Persona 5’s Joker, Final Fantasy VII’S Sephiroth, Minecraft’s Steve and Alex etc.

With the addition of Tekken’s Kazuya (revealed at E3, 2021) on June 29th (later today), there is only one more spot. There is a heated debate regarding whom the last spot should go to. Many of the characters, both DLC and base game, are from titles that do not belong to Nintendo. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is an industry uniting franchise in that respect. We have seen characters from different historic franchises come together to form a special Super Smash roster.

At the heart of Super Smash, however, it is, of course, a Nintendo franchise. As it is the last DLC character, I believe this last character should be rooted in Nintendo’s rich history. Giving the slot to a random character would not feel conclusive or do the franchise justice. In a way, it would feel like watching an amazing TV series just for the ending to leave you unsatisfied. I think it’s important for the last character to have as much of an iconic history as the game itself.

As a fan base, we want a character who really resonates with us. A character who reconnects us with a series or franchise again through Smash, much like Tekken’s Kazuya will do for many players (including myself). It is an important and difficult decision for Nintendo. It is likely that they already know who the last character will be. I just hope their choice leaves us feeling fulfilled for years to come.

Kazuya Mishima’s Super Smash debut is much closer than you think…

As previously reported, Kazuya Mishima was revealed as the penultimate Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC character at E3, 2021.

Following his announcement, his precise release date has been shrouded in mystery.

However, as part of today’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Nintendo Direct, Nintendo has announced an official release date for the game’s latest DLC character. They have revealed that he will be joining the roster as soon as tomorrow, June 29th. With Kazuya’s introduction comes a new stage, Mishima Dojo (the iconic Tekken map). It is worth noting that this is different from your typical Smash map. Nintendo state, “the dojo is closed off in all directions, but its walls and ceiling can be broken with strong attacks, turning the stage into dangerous terrain.” Nintendo has likely tried to incorporate destructible boundaries in the same way that Tekken uses in several of its maps. I am interested to see how they have translated this into Smash Ultimate. Similarly, it will also be an Omega stage (i.e. no platforms). It seems it will require a change of tactics for Smash players.

I am curious to see how it is received by the community. All of us fans are eagerly waiting for Kazuya’s arrival, with some fans already speculating what they think his victory scene should be. Hopefully, Kazuya’s debut will be as iconic as we think it will be.

343 Industries reveal efforts in producing a true ‘player-first’ multiplayer experience…

At E3 2021, Halo Infinite developer 343 Industries released an in-depth look at the upcoming game’s multiplayer (see below). 

After receiving a lot of positive attention, various developers at the company have divulged further details. 

In a Halo Waypoint blog, the Head of Creative for Halo Infinite, Joseph Staten, affirmed that 343 Industries has “a goal to deeply root your Multiplayer character in the larger Halo universe and give them a vital, active role in the Halo story moving forward.” Staten went on to disclose the title of the first season, “Heroes of Reach”, noting that “Reach has a rich history; it’s a key location for Spartans of old and a focal point for a new generation of Spartans preparing to wrestle with the perils and mysteries of a galaxy that has fundamentally changed after the events of Halo 5.” The first season, then, “takes place at a transformational moment in Halo history—at the pivot point from one generation of heroes to the next” and, Staten adds, “your Multiplayer hero is waiting just offstage, geared up for battle and ready to spring into action.”

In the same blog, Live Team Design Director Ryan Paradis, and Lead Progression Designer Christoper Blohm, discussed details regarding the multiplayer’s battle passes and seasonal structure.

In regards to battle passes, the interviewer asked the pair, “can you elaborate a little more on why our Battle Pass is going to be different, and dare I say better than most out there right now?”.

To which Paradis replied, “first and foremost, we’re working hard to ensure that the Battle Pass isn’t a ‘grind’ for players. We want it to be a supplemental reward stream for the time you were already putting into the game. I, for one, can’t stand it when I’m playing a game JUST to complete the Battle Pass – it feels like a chore to me.

On how we’re going to be different… We’re going player-first with our Battle Passes: All Battle Passes will be permanent. This means that the Season 1 Battle Pass will be around forever; you can always go back, select that as your active Battle Pass and continue to earn progress in it. If you decided to take a Season off, or you simply didn’t have time to play, that’s fine. You can always go back and purchase any prior Battle Pass as well. Additionally, our passes will always include various free rewards in addition to the premium track. This goes back to a few pillars of ours: Provide unambiguous value and maintain that player-first focus.

We looked at other titles, where you buy something that provides time-limited access to the pass, and now you feel obligated to play… That’s not fun, and it’s not player-first. If you put the trust in us and purchase something from us, it’s yours. No strings attached.”

I personally love the idea of a permanent battle pass. It’s a unique idea and it definitely (as Paradis said) removes any feeling of the battle pass being an obligatory ‘chore’ you have to get done. Instead, you can simply do it at your own pace and get actual value for money out of it. 

Regarding seasonal structure, Blohm stated that a new season would kick off “roughly every three months… with a ton of updates, new gameplay content, new events, new systems, new customizations, and new progressions.” 

The reason for this three-monthly refresh is, according to Paradis, “because it gives players a good amount of time to experience and explore the Seasonal content, without it getting tiresome and without constantly pulling the rug from under players.” Adding to this, Blohm said, “we do not want to demand that players play a ton of hours every week of the season to complete everything. We want players having fun in Halo, not grind it like it’s a job.”

343 industries are taking a unique approach, emphasizing the exclusion of any content which promotes a compulsive need to grind the game (which we see so often). It seems they are making strides to producing a truly ‘player-first’ multiplayer experience.

Borderlands 3 has added cross-play functionality, a new level cap, and new legendaries for players to hunt…

A new update for Borderlands 3 was announced today. Along with it comes many new features for the game, cross-play functionality being one of them. The new cross-play functionality will allow players across Steam, Epic Games Store, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S to all play together through the game’s SHiFT Matchmaking system. Sadly, this does not include PlayStation users.

The process is simple enough. Players will simply have to make a uniquely named ShiFT account.

Another big change following the update is the increase in the level cap to level 72. This allows players to create more powerful builds to tackle Borderlands and its various DLCs.

Additionally, endless seasonal events have been added. Such events can be made active or inactive by players. This does not include the game’s various limited time events. Examples of seasonal events include Bloody Harvest, Broken Hearts Day, and Revenge of the Cartels. Players, therefore, can complete challenges and collect loot from the events for as long as they need to collect it all. This means players will not be rushed in getting some of the legendary gear required for their builds. The update also includes a new finale event for the True Trials mini-events for the most powerful players (high skill level requirement).

The update follows numerous balancing tweaks for Borderlands 3, as well as two season passes of DLC content.

For those who don’t know, Borderlands 3 is an open-world, high action, role-playing first-person shooter game in which you play as ‘Vault Hunters’, traversing Pandora in the never-ending quest for treasure. Players make their own builds, explore, complete missions and of course, loot. You are constantly trying to get your hands on legendary loot, so you can take on harder missions with greater rewards. All of this can be done by yourself or with friends.

It seems like now is a good time for new players to get involved with Borderlands 3. It is also a good time for old players to revisit, with the added potential to strengthen their builds even further (due to the increased level cap).

This update also comes after announcing the ‘Tiny Tina’s Wonderland’ spinoff series at E3, 2021. It is a four-player co-op game set in “an unpredictable fantasy world”, taking place after the events of Borderlands 2 DLC Assault on Dragon Keep.

Similarly, we also received word that the Borderlands movie recently finished filming.

It seems to be a good year so far for Borderlands fans as we keep getting new content for Pandora’s whacky universe.

and it looks… surprisingly good?

As we know, a feature film adaptation of Gearbox’s Borderland game series has been in production for a while. Well, we can tell you now, it has finally finished filming.

When Lionsgate’s adaptation was announced, fans felt a mix of excitement and nerves, as we always do with film adaptations of games. We know from the past that they rarely recreate the same magic as their video game counterpart. It will be tough to recreate the world of Pandora’s whacky brilliance. However, some of the details we’ve seen so far provoke some optimism.

For example, the cast is actually surprisingly impressive. It includes Cate Blanchett (Lilith), Jamie Lee Curtis (Dr Patricia Tannis) and the always hilarious duo of Kevin Hart (Roland) and Jack Black (Clap Trap). This cast, alongside the director-writer duo of Eli Roth and Chernobyl writer Craig Maxin, means we may actually have something to be excited about.

I’m particularly eager to see how Jack Black’s Claptrap translates to the big screen. I personally love that casting selection and have high hopes for Claptrap’s movie endeavours. Although we do not have excessive detail to go on for most of the characters, we at least know how Jack Black’s claptrap will appear on the screen (see below).

It appears that Claptrap will be maintaining the same look on the screen. On the other hand, the other characters have been kept in the shadows (quite literally, see below).

Despite their faces being kept in the dark, it seems our favourite characters will be maintaining a lot of the same appearances as in the games (at least outfit wise).

The film’s synopsis reads as follows “Lilith (Cate Blanchett), an infamous outlaw with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of the universe’s most powerful S.O.B., Atlas. Lilith forms an alliance with an unexpected team – Roland (Kevin Hart), a former elite mercenary, now desperate for redemption; Tiny Tina (Arianna Greenblatt), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Florian Munteanu), Tina’s musclebound, rhetorically challenged protector; Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis), the scientist with a tenuous grip on sanity; and Claptrap (Jack Black), a persistent wiseass robot. These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other.

The news of the filming coming to an end comes shortly after the new Borderland spinoff game ‘Tiny Tina’s Wonderland’ was revealed at E3, 2021. Borderlands fans have a lot to look forward to in the next two years.

In terms of a release date, due to filming having just finished, we predict the post-production processes will mean a 2022 release.

The post The ‘Borderlands’ movie wraps up filming first appeared on Get2Gaming.

One of the most viewed and talked-about reveals from this year’s E3 was Microsoft’s Xbox mini-fridge. The video revealing the product now has almost four million views, and quickly became one of the most talked-about products on the internet, and it has now been confirmed it is getting a global release.

The meme-turned-reality all started when Xbox players and non-players alike, poked fun at the design of the Xbox Series X. All sorts of comparisons were thrown around (a brick and Spongebob Squarepants to name a few), but the most frequent comparison was that of a mini-fridge. Microsoft then joined in on the fun by making an actual full-size replica fridge of the Xbox Series X. The company then offered a giveaway to win the fridge and even gave fridges to Snoop Dogg and YouTube creator iJustine.

Now, a more consumer-friendly version is being released right in time for Christmas (expected release date November 2021 – January 2022) and Xbox Games Marketing and ‘Home Appliance Visionary’ at Microsoft, Aaron Greenberg, has confirmed it will be released outside of the US.

The price and what regions it will be released in has yet to be announced, yet it is said to be able to hold 10 cans of beer/soft drinks with some extra room for snacks, something any gamer would benefit from. It would be silly for Microsoft not to make this become a global bestselling phenomenon after the worldwide success and staggering demand it already has.

A brand new trailer has been released from Atlus for Shin Megami Tensei V, alongside an announcement for exactly when it will be released and pre-orders being opened. For E3 2021 Nintendo’s Tree House Event briefly showed the Shin Megami Tensei 5 trailer showcasing exclusive Gameplay and combat style however, their most recent trailer revealed the strong action-packed story behind the upcoming release. If you have played previous Shin Megami games and have been following the series, you know what to expect and are well aware that Shin Megami V has a lot in store.

The latest Shin Megami Tensei 5 trailer begins the trailer with the protagonist appearing in a dystopian Tokyo, that has been overrun and filled with God, demons, monsters and the like. The protagonist partners up with a mysterious stranger to become a ‘Nahobino’, a ‘condemned being’ to conquer the forces of chaos. The trailer displays gameplay to be an open-world, turn-based, roleplay game where you must fight demons to survive. 

The plot may not be the most original, but the trailer offers a ton of amazing gameplay, graphics and briefly introduces us to unique characters and interesting mechanics. The scenery proves to give a real feel for a post-apocalyptic Tokyo, while the protagonist goes up against demons in chaotic ruin, the players have the option to explore a variety of areas and most likely will have fun playing around with that freedom. It is clear that as the player progresses through the game, they will unlock new abilities for their character, as we have a closer look at the trailer, we can see the player can summon a special attack, of what appears to be a strong wind which causes multiple combos and critical hits to their enemy and inflict insane damage.
