Two trailers recently dropped for a Black-lead indie game in development, Nixie. The trailers were uploaded by David ‘TheStoryteller‘, who makes media analysis and social-political commentary videos about and from a Black-British lens. David got his start with videos on The Boondocks and his ‘Operation Black Steel’ series.

The Kickstarter is now live for 19 days (click the link to view more info on the project, money goals, donation rewards and more). David has stated the following regarding Nixie:

‘For the record, this is an all or nothing project. Either the demo gets funded and we make it, or it doesn’t and we don’t make it. If you want to support this concept, this is only chance to do it’.

Story, Gameplay & More: Nixie is an ‘Action & Visual Novel hybrid’ about ‘found family, communication and the demonization of African spirituality’. I’m especially interested in that last point thanks to Ransford James, (political science major and professional BJJ-Daddy) who has discussed the history and colonial impacts regarding views on Obeah.

Between the more comic/manga-inspired segments in the story, there are also retro-style sprites in a different style featuring a main character on some kind of magical Dorito hover board, suggesting flying shoot-em-up mechanics in a similar vein to Galaga or parts of Cuphead.

A Personal Moment: As a biracial… Well, tri-racial lefty Britbonger, I have a lot of love for David’s work and hope Nixie gets the backing it deserves. And as a drippingly optimistic theatre kid with aspirations of becoming his own auteur, seeing those behind Nixie achieve would do a lot to inspire young creative minds everywhere, myself included (at time of writing).

Indie Developer, OtyugraGames has been forced to announce the cancelation of a Nintendo 3ds port of their upcoming Horror-Roguelike called “dream-Prison wanderer”, which they had previously said was coming to Nintendo’s dual screen system. In a long reddit post at the beginning of the month, Otyugra claimed Nintendo was “indirectly” responsible for this decision, making both physical and digital publishing “utterly infeasible” on the 3DS platform.

In direct response to recent actions by Nintendo (some of which are confidential), we at Otyugra decided we must cancel Dream-Prison Wanderer's port to the New 3DS family of systems. We tried to make it happen from May 2019 until today, for as long as possible.

In the very same update, the developers confirmed the game was still in development for Windows, with the game scheduled for a 2023 release date, as well as adding that there would be consideration given to releasing the game on other platforms in the future

This is just a symptom of the clse of the 3DS and wii U E-shops, which as set to shut permanently in march 2023.

In an interview with 3ds eshop developers earlier this month, Nintendo Life revealed that these developers had not received notification ahead of schedule about the E-shops closure. One developer even specifically stated that the older eshop games had paid for their office rent in 2021.

FAR: Changing Tides, the sequel to FAR: Lone Sails (not to be confused with the ‘far’ series I guess), has recently had it’s release date announced in this recent trailer. And here’s the announcement trailer to Changing Tides from 2018 if you want to have a butcher’s… or rather, a fishmonger’s? Actually, no- Why do cockney folks say “butcher’s hook” when the saying “hook line and sinker” is LITERALLY right there!? This is fisherman-erasure on a global scale- Nay, butchers ARE hook-trenders… For all 5 of the people in my life who know who Contrapoints is, hope you enjoyed that mildly unhinged reference.

A Brief History on FAR: FAR: Lone Sails released in 2018, a survival RPG seeing players explore an oceanic post-apocalypse in a side-scrolling adventure. Okomotive and Mixtvision developed and published the title respectively. Fast forward a little, now Lone Sails is available on PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One and mobile. Changing Tides is now being published by Frontier Foundry. The USP with the Changing Tides is that not only will you be sailing through the world above, but your vehicle will also be decked out with a submarine mode!

The release date was confirmed by Don Schmocker (co-founder and lead-artist of Okomotive and Professional Bad-Ass-Name-Haver) to be coming on March 1st of this year on PS4 and PS5.

Mr Schmocker also spoke of the positive feedback received on Lone Sails and how the “meditative reflective nature” seemed to resonate strongly. The plan is to keep the best elements of the Sails while aiming to make Changing Tides more deliberately “thought-provoking”.

Schmocker also claimed Okomotive wanted to expand on content with new features like stormy weather, underwater cities and environmental puzzles suiting the ship’s new mechanics. Emphasis was especially put on distinguishing between sails, oars and the ship’s engine as movement methods. Maybe quieter sections of gameplay will be punctuated with underwater Mad-Maxian fuel scrapes where you’ll have to outwit bandits with less rickety ships than you.

Last, but not least, Schmocker also stated that due to the story being more implicit at times and requiring interpretation, players can also discover key plot context and lore by discovering sunken treasures, locations and ruins of the flood. As something of a Hollow Knight fan myself, not gonna lie, I’m extremely horny for environmental storytelling done right, so I’ll be cautiously optimistic with this one!

Nintendo has announced it will be holding an online indie game showcase TODAY at Noon Eastern Time (that’s 5pm for us limeys)!

The stream should run for around 20 minutes (based on past similar showcases) and it’s expected to cover new indie games or which currently-existing indie games will be coming to Nintendo Switch. There’s been some rumblings in the Twitterverse that Hollow Knight: Silksong may have a spot in the showcase, as us Hollow Knight fans have been starved for content for over a couple years. Fingers crossed the lads at Team Cherry have something put together for it. And while I’m gushing, I highly recommend giving the Hollow Knight Voidheart Edition a go! Tis a masterclass in worldbuilding and deceptively skill-based gameplay. Nintendo will be streaming the event there, so here’s what you do: Click on THIS link to the Nintendo YouTube channel. You can watch the stream when it starts, but if you’re a big boi tech-wizard with a YouTube account, you can even click the little grey bell to notify you when the livestream is about to start. You’ll want to get there a few minutes early though, because YouTube has this strange fetish for playing adverts right before most re-entries into livestreams and I don’t want you clicking off this showcase because you thought it was Febreze commercial!

At this point, it has dawned to me I am writing this section for a type of niche that is simultaneously tech-illiterate enough to need regular explanations of how to work a phone while also being juuuust tech-savvy enough to enjoy video games on modern consoles. The Japanese indie game has launched on macOS and is also coming to iOS next year

GameTomo, the mastermind behind the magical adventure game Sumire, has announced that the indie title will be coming to iOS in the new year after its launch on macOS.

Sumire is currently available on Nintendo Switch and PC and was released earlier this year.

Sumire is a magical narrative adventure about the choices you make as you embark on a one-day journey through a gorgeous Japanese village where you take on the role of Sumire who is trying to make her wishes come true.

Sumire comes across as a simple game with gameplay that might not appear as anything special, walking around, interacting with old and new friends, and delivering items, but the real draw of the game is everything in between. In particular, the art, characters, music and narrative all add to the experience of playing Sumire. 

Sumire has now officially launched on macOS today and GameTomo has also confirmed it will be released on iOS in 2022 as well.

Sumire is currently available on Steam and Nintendo Switch for $14.99 (£11.31), but it has been discounted on the Mac Store for $9.99 to celebrate the macOS release. No release date or price has been announced for the iOS version, but it will hopefully be announced soon.

The post Sumire: The Indie Narrative Adventure Game is Coming to iOS in 2022 first appeared on Get2Gaming.

A new patch providing necessary framework for mods is on the way.

The hit indie game Stardew Valley is one that thrives with community mods. There are mods that add entire new areas to the game, mods that change the art style, mods that diversify the cast of romanceable characters, and more. The game’s simple style and mechanics really lend themselves to this kind of community customisation.

Coming soon, version 1.5.6 will add more modding support, thanks to modders PathosChild and SMAPI. The patch notes didn’t include too much detail on what 1.5.6 will have coming, but “some long requested ‘holy grail’ changes” are on tap. PathosChild has been given access to the Stardew Valley source code to provide the upcoming changes.

PathosChild has led previous updates, including the game’s transition from XNA to MonoGame.

The 1.5.5 update, which went live on Tuesday, brings some quality of life improvements. This includes a buy-back option in case you accidentally sell something unintentionally (so long as you buy it back in the same shopping session).

And FINALLY, you can scootch your pets out of the way if they’re getting in the way of your building endeavours. Just click on them to nudge them out of the way – much better than standing around waiting for them to move their butts.

The full patch notes detail a bunch of other fixes made to the game in 1.5.5. There is no news so far on when 1.5.6 will launch. It doesn’t sound like it should be too long, but version 1.5.5 did follow 1.5.4 by almost 10 months.

‘The Gardener and The Wild Vines’ was released on the 5th November 2021 for Nintendo Switch, Xbox and PlayStation, but had previously been released on PC.

On the Steam Page, Finite Reflection Studios weren’t shy with their description of ‘The Gardener and The Wild Vines’:  “Leap, slash, and climb your way to the top of magical towers in this wholesome platformer about a gay Gardener on a quest to rescue his love.”

This is a game about gay love and it’s important to represent that in a fairy tale setting, as many fairy tales lack that LGBT+ representation.

So, What Is The Gardener And The Wild Vines Anyway?

The story follows a gardener who has a deep love for his Prince, a Prince that has been captured by a Dark Magician (Yugi Muto cries in the heart of the cards). The gardener makes some new friends along the way and ventures off to climb tower after tower, hacking flowers and growing vines to meet his true love at the top.

The Gardener and The Wild Vines doesn’t just follow the love of one man for another, this also touches on the topics of loss, change, hope, identity, passion, justice, anger, self-destruction and much more.

The soundtrack changes for every new area the player enters, the more you dive into it, the more you’ll fall in love with the music. It’s difficult to touch on the genre, but what I can say is that it feels like a modern fairy tale, magical, emotional, fun and ‘full’. It’s like an earful of fairy dust.

The soundtrack is accompanied by funny, yet emotional dialogue. All the characters have their own distinct personality and way of thinking, they feel like people rather than your typical NPC. The first visual was at the start screen.

The pixelated visuals tie everything in together, the character’s expressions, the light blowing of the palm trees, the colourful stars at night. the subtle sparkle of the snow and a beautiful ethereal glow from the sunrise.

The Gardener and the Wild Vines is a beautiful narrative-based platformer that everyone should play (Even if they don’t like narrative games).

Discontinuing Seasonal Pass Pre-Orders

Once the season of Flight ends, there will no longer be any preorders for Adventure passes and Adventure packs, AKA seasonal passes.

We appreciate everyone who has used the preorder feature for Adventure Passes and Adventure Packs to share with friends. Unfortunately, due to changes to update procedures and scheduling, once Season of Flight concludes we will no longer be able to offer Adventure Pass preorders for future seasons.” – That Game Company –

From the start of the next season that starts in early 2022, Adventure passes can only be purchased after a season begins however, the prices will continue to be the same.

The pre-order bonuses will now be added to all the Adventure passes, they’ve also given the possibility to those who receive these passes as a gift and all who receive a pass will also get access to 30 seasonal candles.

Previously only those who pre-ordered the adventure pass could get access to the bonuses, but this possibility has been extended to everyone.

There will also no longer be a countdown to the beginning of a season as TGC mentioned, as it was linked to the Adventure Passes. They may install a countdown in the future, but for now, it will be discontinued.

TGC has mentioned that players should keep an eye on social media to see when a new season will be approaching.

What is Sky: Children of Light?

Sky: Children of Light comes under the ‘wholesome’ games category and was originally released in 2019 for IOS, then 2020 for Android. It’s an open-world exploration game, where a player can go through seven different realms while befriending other players to help them along the way.

The player follows the story of ‘The Children of Light’ who witness their world falling apart in seven different realms after the stars fell from the sky. As a part of this group, it is the player’s quest to find all the stars ‘winged light’ and bring all the children back to life.  This is achieved by exploring the areas, sharing love and light around the kingdoms to awake the ancestors that perished and find out the hidden truth so the stars can be restored. While the storyline is minimal, the concept of becoming friends with different players, chatting and heading out on a great journey, ties it all together.

There are also multiple items to collect such as masks, capes, hairstyles, outfits and musical instruments that allow the player freedom of expression through their character. These items can be obtained by purchasing with real money or with in-game currency.

Sky: Children of Light also have seasonal events, which each have their own unique currency. The currency is called ‘Seasonal Candles’ each seasonal event has a new area to explore in the game, however, each season goes on for a limited amount of time.

SOLAR ASH Pre-Order on Epic Games Store, Fans Wait for PS5, PS4 Pre-Orders

Since Heart Machine Entertainment pushed back SOLAR ASH’s original release date, they’ve now announced that there are pre-orders available on the Epic Games Store for Windows PC, many suspects that PlayStation Pre-orders will soon be available as there has already been a listing on the PlayStation Store France.

Solar Ash, developed by Heart Machine is a fast-paced, action-adventure platformer. So far it’s known for its vibrant graphics and scenery and fast-paced gameplay involved with the unique aesthetic style of the characters, it is a sequel to the pixelated game Hyper Light Drifter. PlayStation has described Solar Ash as a “Journey through a surreal, vivid and highly stylized world filled with mystery, high-speed traversal, endearing characters, and massive enemy encounters.” I’m not surprised, Solar Ash is an exciting must-have on wishlist type game.

Solar Ash Release Date

Solar Ash’s official release date is the 2nd December 2021, which has been clearly stated on the Epic Games Store and PlayStation Store France, while it has yet to be uploaded anywhere else, we can only hope that Solar Ash will be released on PlayStation internationally on the same date. The price is roughly around £30, which is to be expected.

The wholesome game directs has been happening once a year since 2020, Wholesome Games summer 2021 direct had over 70 indie games to showcase. Who are Wholesome Games?

Wholesome Games is an independent organisation founded by Matthew Taylor, it’s made to shine a light on indie games that are thoughtful, change lives and overall, make people happier. The meaning of ‘Wholesome’ is subjective, yet fits in all those categories. Wholesome Indie Games like these are exactly what we need for the future, games that teach players a valuable lesson, make them smile, laugh and have something beautiful to share at the end of it. Gruesome games and sad endings are good too, but we need a little sunshine every once in a while.
