Blizzard unveils the next expansion for World of Warcraft: Dragonflight, alongside announcing the long-awaited arrival of Classic: Wrath of the Lich King.

Blizzard Entertainment made two big announcements yesterday in their scheduled livestream. While they were set to unveil the future of their MMORPG, World of Warcraft, they also announced a return to the past. The fan favourite expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, which originally released back in 2008, will be coming to World of Warcraft Classic in 2022. Meanwhile the new expansion was confirmed to be Dragonflight.

Return of the King

The return of Wrath of the Lich King was expected by fans after the successful releases of Burning Crusade Classic last year, and the Classic ‘Season of Mastery’. The latter of which saw players able to join a new server with fresh characters to take on modified versions of the classic game’s challenges.

Wrath of the Lich King, by recorded subscription numbers, was the most popular of the game’s current nine iterations. Returning it to classic servers seems like a no-brainer, but Blizzard have already announced a single but important change to the game. The automatic ‘Dungeon Finder’ feature which was added to the game later on in Wrath of the Lich King’s life, won’t be appearing in the new ‘Classic’ version. Lead Producer of WoW Classic, Holly Longdale described the feature as being one that wasn’t a good fit for the Classic community. The WoW Classic experience is touted as one that returns to the more social and community focused experience of the earlier days.

As such, this may be the last expansion to hit Classic servers, as many members of the community view Wrath of the Lich King as the last expansion made to the original vision for the game. Considering it’s successes however, it doesn’t seem like Blizzard will be abandoning the project any time soon, and we could be looking at more ‘seasons of mastery’ in the future, potentially for Burning Crusade, and Wrath of the Lich King.

Soaring to new horizons

Looking to the future, the new name of the game is Dragonflight. As speculated by many fans, in the MMORPG’s ninth expansion the dragons will be taking centre stage. Set in their long abandoned former homeland, the Dragon Isles, the expansion will see explorers from the Horde and Alliance, travelling by ship to the newly revealed islands alongside their draconic allies. Lead narrative designer, Steve Danuser describes the isles as a place that has lain dormant for 10,000 years, hidden by ancient magic. But now as the elements and life begins to return to the land, the titanic watchers have re-activated the beacon, and recalled the dragons back to their home.

Described as an adventure of exploration and discovery, rather than warfare or grand cosmic stakes, your character will venture to the new lands alongside other explorers and researchers, rather than soldiers. Players will traverse rocky shores, long sprawling plains, icy mountains, and ancient ruins, all while the land comes alive around them with devastating elemental forces. During the new experience, players will be able to ride on a customizable dragon mount. This ‘dragon riding’ feature promises to update the experience of flying in the game, making it more dynamic with momentum, speed, and gravity being important factors.

But players who would rather be a dragon, than ride one, are not out of luck. The livestream also announced the new playable race, The Dracthyr. These draconic and humanoid hybrids will be able to pick either faction to play on, but have access to only one class. The Evoker. The Evoker is a new class, exclusive to the Dracthyr, which will give players the ability to make use of their draconic wings and breath weapons, along with colour based magics, to both damage enemies and heal allies.

Other changes and updates are set to come alongside the expansion as well. These include a return to the more classic style of ‘talent trees’, where players will earn points to customize their character every level. Professions will also be seeing an update. Gathering and crafting is said to have been greatly expanded, with the ability to specialize into more niche areas, and to complete work orders for other players. Additionally, updates to the UI to make the HUD more modern and customizable will be coming as well.

More to come

More news is expected to come out over the next few months, in the build up to these releases. No window for a release date was given for Dragonflight, but alpha and beta testing is expected to start later this year. Wrath of the Lich King Classic is slated for release in 2022. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for future updates. In other news, in May the studio will offer a preview of Warcraft’s first game built from the ground up for mobile, which is scheduled for release later this year.

Get ready Marvel fans, an MMO based on the Marvel universe is on its way! Interestingly, it’s being developed by people you may not expect. The likes of Square Enix have had their shot, as have insomniac, both having varying levels of success. However, now it’s time for DC Universe Online developer Dimensional Ink Studios to step up.

This information was presented by parent company Enad Global 7. It was then recorded by Streamer @mmmmmmmmiller. Quite the name.

For those familiar with Marvel, they will know that an MMO has been rumoured for some time now. This is because of leaked concept in 2019 that displayed character designs of Daybreak’s earlier attempt at a Marvel MMO. It was shown with a slide in the presentation notes that says “Unannounced MMORPG”. Moreover, it also says that it will be a “Marvel IP based massively multiplayer online game” which is set to be led by Jack Emmert, the former lead on City of Heroes and currently works on the DC Universe Online team. If you can’t beat them, join them I suppose.

Marvel Stepping Up Moves Into Video Game Market

As we’ve previously mentioned, Marvel have been involved in quite a few games recently. After the success of Marvel’s Spider-Man on PS5 (get your copy here), Marvel have also released Marvel’s The Avengers and a Guardians of the Galaxy. It seems they’ve not only been busy with their new films and television shows.

Now trying to dominate all forms of media, it has also been confirmed there will be a sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man and a new Wolverine game too. How exciting. Additionally, XCOM developer Firaxis Games have been producing Marvel Midnight Suns. Unfortunately, it looks to have been delayed from March 2022 to sometime later in the year.

A statement was published by the creative director Jake Solomon on the games social media. Essentially, it was noting that the development team needed extra time to improve the games quality.

“We know many fans were looking forward to playing the game originally next spring, and this decision did not come lightly,” he said.

“We decided to push our launch because we need more time to make this the best game possible. It’s important to believe in our creative vision for Marvel’s Midnight Suns and want to do justice in delivering an unforgettable adventure”.

The company addresses the idea that their is MMO breaking users’ expensive GPUs.

Amazon’s highly coveted recently released MMORPG, New World, is one of the hottest games out right now, currently sitting at the top of Steam’s charts. Despite doing incredibly well sales-wise, it is well known that the game is not without issues. These issues range from overwhelming server queue times to pieces of your gear clipping through themselves. However, one potentially serious issue which has deterred some people from diving into the new MMORPG is the rumours that the game bricks your GPU. Players have reported that the title has ruined their expensive graphics cards. This started all the way back in the closed beta but has continued through into the game’s full release as well.

Amazon, for its part, is convinced any hardware that is falling over has nothing to do with its game, echoing the same stance around the closed beta.

“We have received a small number of reports of players encountering issues with GeForce RTX cards,” Amazon tells us in a statement. “After a lengthy investigation, we have verified that there is no unusual behaviour from New World that causes these issues. EVGA has previously acknowledged manufacturing issues on some GeForce RTX cards.

“New World is safe to play, and we encourage players who have encountered a hardware issue to contact the manufacturer.”

When EVGA admitted the fault with its GPUs, it stated that only around two dozen RTX 3090 GPUs had failed during the closed beta, which should give you some idea of the scale of the problem.

What I think might be happening is that some parts of the code may put a level of stress on a graphics card or PSU that, if there are any underlying issues with the tech – issues that other games may not highlight however long they’re played for – then those will come to the fore with New World. And potentially in pretty catastrophic ways. An MMO with such reasonable system requirements absolutely should not be putting such stress on a PC that its parts simply start failing.

In the end, New World is likely safe to play, so long as your system can pass the Amazon stress test.

The exciting MMORPG is undoubtedly not without issues…

New World is the hottest MMORPG on the market right now, topping Steam’s charts fresh off its 28th of September release. The highly sought-after title represents Amazon Games’ first major title, and it is doing well, to say the least.

However, it is not all rainbows and sunshine for New World and its players. The first problem we all faced was the notorious massive server queue times. Although this is dying down a little, players found themselves waiting for hours on end just to get onto the game. This is just the first obstacle; there are also a vast array of minor glitches and bugs which all players have had to overcome alongside their quests. What has proved most bothersome is something much smaller than queue times; it concerns the game’s cosmetics and how they are failing.

New World‘s gear displays a significant problem: clipping. Equipment tends to clip into other pieces of gear, causing overlap that looks ridiculous and breaks immersion. Hats clip through hoods, hair clips through hats, and robes clip through just about anything. A newly forged Azoth Staff looks awesome and intimidating right up until the point where it cuts through the other weapon attached to a player’s back. It’s one of the oldest video game visual bugs, and it’s still a problem these days.

Weapons in New World clip into each other all the time, and players are already bothered by how it looks. This may not seem like a big deal, but one of the biggest draws of an MMORPG is creating the character a player wants to make, and appearance is a massive part of that. When a character looks how a player wants them to look after successfully obtaining tough to acquire gear, it’s a huge moment of triumph. By contrast, that gear phasing into other pieces of equipment completely ruins the image.

New World is far from perfect, with multiple areas needing polishing and some issues requiring urgent attention. However, the incredible success of the title despite all of this speaks for how good a game it is. With time, it could shape up to be a historic MMORPG experience.

Since its beginnings as a successful series of strategy games in the 1990s, Warcraft has developed and evolved in a variety of ways. Warcraft has become a huge franchise inspiring several video game titles, a long-running series of books, and World of Warcraft, the most successful MMORPG ever developed.

Following the success of titles like Hearthstone, Blizzard announced earlier this year that the Warcraft series will be making fresh ventures into the realm of mobile gaming. This will take the form of two new titles in the Warcraft franchise. We are yet to hear details of what these games will be.

Warcraft has been one of the most famous PC games since its debut, producing the extremely popular World of Warcraft, which boasted tens of millions of players at the height of its popularity. Now, the series is set to enter the mobile market for the second time. A new job posting hints at how the new Warcraft mobile game may increase the franchises cast of characters.

Blizzard recently advertised a Senior Concept Artist position on the job search website, Indeed, for an unknown mobile Warcraft project. As well as other features of the game needing designs such as creatures and characters, the main thing to pick up from the job listing is that it specifically states there is potential to develop new characters. This means we could possibly be seeing some fresh faces joining the already iconic roster fans are familiar with.

The Warcraft mobile games would be the next in a long line of mobile games from Blizzard’s most successful franchises. Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, released in 2014, has become one of the company’s most successful titles, inspiring a multitude of other online collectable card games. Diablo Immortal was revealed at Blizzcon 2018 and is set to be released in 2022, whereas  there were reports of Overwatch heading to mobile at some point, earlier this year. So, Blizzard have really been making the push to expand their portfolio of games to the mobile market.

At this point in time, not much has been revealed about the two Warcraft mobile games. Other than being confirmed, the only thing we know is the two games are both in advanced stages with their production. Blizzard did however point out that they were encouraging players to check out their classic titles, so potentially these games could take some influence from there. These announcements came from CEO Bobby Kotick during a financial earnings call earlier this year.

As it stands, two Warcraft games are in development for mobile platforms, with a release date yet to be revealed.

The post New Characters Could be Joining the Warcraft Franchise first appeared on Get2Gaming.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is coming up to celebrate its 10th anniversary as the only free-to-play MMO that puts you at the centre of your very own Star Wars saga, and what better way to celebrate this than by getting a new expansion later this year.

The new expansion, titled Legacy of the Sith, was unveiled in a live stream on Youtube yesterday where the developers BioWare discussed in detail what fans could expect from it.

Legacy of the Sith Gameplay

The new expansion will send players to the darkest depths and furthest reaches of the galaxy, battling for control on the aquatic planet Manaan, which houses a vital medical resource in its underwater facilities, across separate Imperial and Republic storylines

Players will also have the chance to explore a ruined Sith fortress on the planet Elmon in another new storyline that is available as single-player and multiplayer Flashpoint, as well as a new R-4 Anomaly Operation that tasks players with taking down an obscure Sith cult. Legacy of the Sith will also include the next Galatic Season titled “Shadows of the Underworld”.

Players can expect the level cap to increase from 75 to 80 as well as a new feature called Combat Styles that will give players greater customization options on the battlefield.

Play as a Trooper wielding a Sniper Rifle, or a Sith Inquisitor with a lightsaber in each hand, or even secretly use Dark Side powers while posing as a member of the Jedi Order. Loadouts will increase your ability to customize, allowing you to swap between playstyles and gear with a click. – BioWare.

The expansion is due to hit the public test server in the near future, ahead of its holiday 2021 launch and will be free to current subscribers.

BioWare is donning Legacy of the Sith’s Launch as the beginning of a year-long celebration, so there might be some more surprises in store for the MMO. It also said it won’t be showing anything at EA Play Live, but here is a list of what else you can expect.

Magic: Legends has announced it will be shutting down later this year, only two months since the MMO was released as an open beta version.

The massive collectable trading card game, Magic: The Gathering, was reimaged in a new life thanks to the MMO titled Magic: Legends, yet it was sadly announced on the official Twitter page that it is going to be shut down on October 31, before it even leaves its open beta stage.

Reasons for why Magic: Legends is shutting down 

Magic: Legends was launched at the late end of March this year, and fans were quick to send harsh and somewhat deserved feedback about their experiences. However, the creators did well to listen to said criticism and quickly tweaked the issues players found, including monetization aspects regarding certain in-game purchases. Yet sadly that doesn’t seem to have helped the game in this case, despite the updates actually being well received by the fans and some sent praise for the willingness of the developers to listen to what the fans thought during the beta version.

The full statement released on Twitter made sure to thank its fans for trying the game and their ongoing feedback and support but admitted the development team at Cryptic Studios may have missed the mark in terms of their vision. It also said any player who spent money during the open beta version of the game will be issued a full refund.

The game was originally planned to be released on Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam after the open beta stage, yet those plans have sadly also been cancelled.

What Happens Next?

Magic: Legends is still accessible for now, so any players who want to enjoy the game can still do so by unlocking the various classes that are in the game. All items that were previously available only through premium currencies will also be made available to the game’s free currency, Aether.

Many fans were hoping the Magic: The Gathering franchise would be following the footsteps of Dungeons & Dragons into the video game industry, however, that cannot be said for Magic: Legends. Hopefully, there will come another time for the best-selling card game and its millions of fans to try again with this epic quest.

Elder Scrolls Online

This humongous game is going free-to-play on PS4, Xbox One and PC!

Tamriel Unlimited will be bringing the ESO to PlayStation and Xbox with a lesser price barrier but the same online requirements as other games available. 

June 9th 2015 (coincidentally my birthday, and what a treat!) is the date that has been confirmed for the release of Bethesda’s online entry in the Elder Scrolls franchise, Elder Scrolls Online. As well as this, the developer has also revealed that the MMO will no longer need a monthly subscription to play.

Now dubbed The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited, a press release has stated that the game will include all of the content that is available in the current game, “plus all the updates and content additions, including the exciting new Justice and Champion systems.” 

The PC version, however, will be going live earlier on 17th March, where players will be automatically moved across to the free-to-play world. An added bonus is that if you’ve already purchased the game then you won’t need to buy it again. Phew! There is also still a benefit for those who want to keep going with their paid subscription; ESO Plus is the name of the game’s premium service, and it will include: “exclusive in-game bonuses, a monthly allotment of Crowns to use in the store and access to all DLC game packs while a member.” Crowns will enforce as Tamriel Unlimited’s premium currency.

With this in mind, Xbox owners will need to have an active Xbox Live Gold subscription and PlayStation owners will also need a PlayStation Plus membership. 

Rumours have recently been swinging too, that the long-running and highly commended World of Warcraft would also transition to a free-to-play model soon, but Blizzard shed light that that isn’t the plan for their own MMO quite yet.
