Games from the dearly beloved game series have finally made an official appearance on PC (March 30th, 2021) which has been long awaited by fans of the franchise. Originally being released on PlayStation 2, the series has taken a long journey with the games being released across various consoles like the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and more! Although they were playable on PC through the use of emulators, it has now become possible to buy them and play an official version released by the developers.

The games: Kingdom Hearts 1 and Kingdom Hearts 2 Remix editions, Kingdom Hearts 3, and the rhythm game Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory were at first released on the Epic Games Store (EGS) platform (known for games like Fortnite, Rocket League and Sifu). However, like many other games released exclusively on EGS, such as Borderlands 3, Control and Metro Exodus, were later available elsewhere, such as Steam.

The EGS exclusive release was rather controversial, as many gamers are against the company for their practices of securing exclusivity for popular game releases, as well as their marketing tactics of frequently giving away free games on their platform. As a result, there have been a number of gamers who have boycotted buying games on the EGS store, or even using the platform at all. EGS has a dedicated subreddit forum with almost 39 thousand followers who post negative news involving the company as well as posts you might call “hate posts”.

Fans across different online platforms such as Reddit and Steam discussion forums have mentioned waiting patiently for an announcement from Square Enix, the games series publisher. As the 1 year exclusivity period to EGS has now ended since March this year, there is high speculation that the games will soon come to the more popular PC gaming platform, Steam.

Another thing that needs to be taken into account with the potential release on Steam, is that it will hopefully be tested and ready to be played on the Steam Deck, which is the new gaming console from Valve, the creators of Steam. The rollout of the “console” is still taking place, with orders being backordered through 2023. Whilst the appearance and usage is that of a gaming console similar to the Nintendo Switch, it is in fact basically a compact computer which uses the Linux operating system.

Valves upcoming handheld Laptop/Console Hybrid, the Steam Deck, is on track to launch in February, the company has said recently.

“Global pandemic, supply issues, and shipping issues notwithstanding, it looks like we’ll be able to start getting these out the door by the end of February,” the company has said in a recent update. The steam deck was announced back in July of last year and has been advertised as a “powerful, all-in-one portable PC” capable of running the latest AAA releases. The devices prices start at $399/£349, with increased storage options available for more.

The steam deck was originally intended to launch in December, but was pushed back 2 months due to a shortage of material. In this latest update, valve also said players will be able to see the steam deck verified status start to appear for the games in your steam library. The verified system will let steam deck owners easily tell which games are best suited to be played on the system based on 4 categories: input, Seamlessness, Display and System support.

Valve has also stated they have no interest in any games being exclusive for steam Deck, saying “its a PC and it should play games like a PC”, However it has also been reported that they may be in development of some specifically hand-held friendly games.

However, we did report yesterday that there may still be issues with steam deck and how developers have to implement anti cheat for it.

Why is steam deck and Proton layer a problem, and what even is Proton?

The topic of the steam deck and its proton layer has been a hotly contested issue over the last few months. Valves upcoming Handheld Console/PC/Laptop hybrid runs a version of the open source operating system Linux, which does not play well with many windows games. To fix this, the device will use something called the proton layer to effectively emulate windows functions through the Linux OS, although this brought its own string of problems, such as the fact that most anti cheat software do not play nice with proton.

At Least theoretically this issue was solved last year, when it was announced that steam had worked with anti cheat developers to fix the proton compatibility issues, but in comments made recently by Warhammer: Vermintide and Warhammer 40K: Darktide Developers from Fatshark revealed that it wasn’t quite as simple as initially expected, at least when it comes to Epic Games “Easy Anti Cheat”.

Easy Anti Cheat Woes

“It’s far more complex than first suspected — EAC has two versions. Non-EOS and EOS (Epic Online Services). Most games historically use Non-EOS EAC. It’s the one Vermintide 2 uses as well. Epic only added Proton support for the EOS version of EAC. Therefor in order to implement proton support for Vermintide 2, a huge amount of reworking of the EAC implementation would be required, which may also require all players to authenticate with Epic Online Services as well — perhaps even logging in to the Epic environment (to be confirmed, however).”

This was stated by developer Hedge on the steam, and it really goes to show that the situation with proton and the steam deck is more complicated than we have previously been lead to believe. That having been said, the post does also make it clear this is a problem caused by epic games, rather than by valve.

The post does go on to entail a few options that fatshark have, such as ripping out the current EAC implementation and replacing it with the new Epic Online Services compatible version, but that may require players to log in with an epic games account, and given the general PC gaming populations dislike of the epic games store, that would be a hard pill for the majority of the audience who play on desktop to swallow for the small amount of players who would be using the steam deck.

The obvious hope here would be that epic games does add the availability for proton to the older versions of EAC, but if these newer versions do require epic games accounts to play on the players end… look I hate to be a pessimist but it really makes more sense to epic to force upgrades on developers to get more players stealth-onboarded to their personal store front.

In any case, however, it may take some time for these changes to go through and early adopters of the steam deck may end up left out to dry.

With this change, PUBG will be getting some new anti-cheat measures, and there are some fears that this could affect the game working on the upcoming Steam Deck.

Back at the start of 2021, PUBG introduced Zakynthos, a Proprietary anti cheat solution, and one the devs claim helped them dump 28% more cheaters than last year. Now they are Tightening the anticheats effectiveness, including the implementation of Kernel drivers… which could be a problem.

Kernel Drivers are a windows thing, and don’t work in the Linux architecture. Valve may have a solution to this, they have made some big promises in regards to the steam decks compatibility. However only time will tell if this actually works out.

While Valves steam deck still has many unknowns, especially when it comes to the library of games it will work with, there have been 4 recent additions to the list of games confirmed to work with the platform. On Friday, Valve announced that Arma 3, DayZ, Unturned and Planetside 2 all feature working battlEye anti-Cheat when playing them through Proton (Proton being the Software the steam Deck will use to make Windows games run in Linux). These game join ARK: Survivisl Evolved and Mount And Blade II: Bannerlord for a total of six windows titles that Linux users can play without interference from anti-cheat software.

This number is… Rather low however you slice it. According to valve the technology is ready to go and all developers need to do is reach out to ask for it to be activated in their games. The current list is also missing some steam heavy hitters, such as Rainbow Six Siege and PUBG. as of right now we still do not have a full picture of all of the games that will work with Steam Deck and its Linux-Based operating system, but it is something valve have promised to clear up through a new “Verification Program” before the handheld launches in early 2022.

The images also show us the expected packaging.

Valve has released an updated look at the Steam Deck, giving us an idea of what we can expect to see when it arrives at our doorstep.

Sharing in a new Steam community post, Valve confirmed that it has recently completed its design validation manufacturing build of the Steam Deck, a version which it will use for additional testing and developer kits.

“DV [design validation] is the final prototype build before production, and it includes improvements from the EV2 build,” Valve said. “After this build, there will be additional minor changes in the final product.”

“One of the main differences between these units and the previous (EV2) prototypes is that we are now testing our packaging design. So before we start sending these out to developers, we wanted to give you a sneak peek of the final packaging that customers will see in February.”

The company said that it will start shipping the first wave of dev-kits out to developers “very soon.”

The several images shared show us what the interior and exterior of the Steam Deck box will look like and include. One image shows the inside of the box decorated with text in more than one language, with some pieces of the text indicating how and where you can use the Steam Deck–including the toilet and “in a test chamber.”

Valve also confirmed that the handheld device will come with one Steam Deck and one power supply, and also shared the first images of the 64GB and 256GB Steam Deck carry-cases.

The Steam Deck was announced earlier this year and is a Switch-like portable PC. The device starts at £349 but scales up to £569 depending on the storage type, but Valve is also accepting £5 deposits so fans may get their hands on one. Last month, Valve announced that the Steam Deck has been delayed to February 2022.

In other news, October and November have seen some big next-gen titles released, including Call of Duty: Vanguard, Battlefield 2042, FIFA 22, Far Cry 6, and Left 4 Dead’s spiritual successor, Back 4 Blood. You can purchase all of these titles, as well as pre-ordering the Halo Infinite Campaign, Elden Ring and any other games from our Go2Games website.

Valve released a detailed FAQ for its upcoming handheld console and revealed its thoughts on exclusive games

While the Steam Deck‘s launch date has been delayed by two months, Valve is still gearing up for its inevitable release by releasing more information regarding the portable handheld console.

The company have made it clear that the Steam Deck will not be receiving exclusive games and will be sticking to allowing players to take their PC libraries with them wherever they go.

Valve’s Steam Deck

The Steam Deck has been designed with one goal in mind: portable gaming based on players’ Steam library. It is set out to provide comfort as well as convenience. without compromising any game’s performance. There might be some games that are more optimisable than others, but the Steam Deck Compatability System will make it clear to users which game those will be, and those that might require additional steps by the user to operate.

Yet Valve has made it clear the Steam Deck is more of a portable PC than a new handheld console.

No, that doesn’t make much sense to us. It’s a PC and it should just play games like a PC. – Valve’s FAQ

Unlike the Nintendo Switch, whose performance varies between its portable and docked states, the Steam Deck will perform the same regardless of its playing state, making it playable the same way in whichever state is it being played on. And just like gaming on PC, players will still be able to customize their graphics settings to get their desired performance, yet most games will start with the intended graphics settings out of the box.

Valve has made it very clear from the beginning what the Steam Deck would be advertised as and the company is sticking to that by not offering exclusive games for the Steam Deck.

If you want to read more of the detailed FAQ, you can read it here.

Valve’s portable PC launch date has been delayed into next year

Disappointing news for anyone that has already reserved Valve’s Steam Deck as the company are having to delay the launch of its product.

Expected to release at the end of this year, the Steam Deck has now been pushed back by two months.

Valve’s Steam Deck

Valve published a statement on Wednesday to explain the reasons for the delay and also apologised for any inconveniences:

The launch of Steam Deck will be delayed by two months. We’re sorry about this—we did our best to work around the global supply chain issues, but due to material shortages, components aren’t reaching our manufacturing facilities in time for us to meet our initial launch dates.

Again, we’re sorry we won’t be able to make our original ship date. We’ll continue working to improve reservation dates based on the new timeline, and will keep folks updated as we go. – Steam.

Valve also informed customers that February 2022 would be the new start date of the reservation queue and that all reservation holders will keep their place in line but the dates will shift back accordingly.

There has been a global supply chain issues for some time due to the global pandemic which is why PlayStation are using air frieght to make sure there won’t be a PS5 shortage for Christmas. It makes sense this is now affecting the production lines for Valve’s Steam Deck.

The Steam Deck was originally announced in July and advertised as a handheld PC that runs the latest version of Valve’s SteamOS software and will allow users access to their Steam library and play AAA games as well as use web browsers, visit online game stores other than Steam, and use video-streaming services.

The Steam Deck, valves handheld Linux based gaming device, is well on its way to launching in December. While they have already sorted out some of the bigger issues with the device and how Anticheats work with the proton layer, there are still a few games which may not work at all on the steam deck. To that end, valve has today shown off its new “verification system” for steam deck

The system will work as such: Games will achieve 1 of 4 ratings, which are as follows:

“Verified” means that the game works on Steam Deck with no problem. Just download and play, and (at least theoretically) nothing will go wrong. Verified games work both with the console controllers and the onscreen keyboard.

“Playable” means that the game will run on steam deck, but may need some extra TLC and Config customisation to actually work as it would on pc.

“Unsupported” means a game will not run on a steam deck, no matter what you do. Notably, the demo game used for this from Valve is “Half-life: Alyx” all but confirming a lack of VR support for the handheld system.

And finally, “Unknown” means that Valve dont know if the game works or not because they haven’t checked. These games may technically fall into any of the 3 other categories, but you will have to work that out yourself.

Anyone knowledgeable about PC gaming may have noticed that these categories heavily resemble how Emulators show what games can be played on them, and thats not a coincidence. At its core, the steam deck is a PC emulator for linux, just one that comes on a fancy handheld device.

We'll be sharing production updates, posts from developers who have dev kits out in the world, and videos of games that the Steam Deck team has been playing.

Valve have also told Developers that they can now manually submit their games for verification, although they have also said that it might not always be necessary. “Important” games will be automatically reviewed by Valve without the developers submitting them. What “Important” means in this context is up for debate though.

Valve have even said that, even if a developer doesn’t want their game on the steam deck, there wont be a way to hide the game from the systems inbuilt store.

The Steam Deck launches this December. You can reserve yours now from Valve directly.
