The Pokemon Company has announced that it will release a Pokemon Trading card game themed around Pokemon Go. The announcement caught everyone by surprise when it was made official the Japanese Twitter account, accompanied by a brief teaser video released. This set in particular will be named “Pokemon Go” and to feature card art taken from Pokemon Go. The set appears to be a mini expansion, as booster packs released in Japan will only contain 6 cards, and will feature Mewtwo as one of the set’s mascots. Nothing else was announced about the set, such as if it will include any mechanics inspired by Pokemon Go.

The special set release date is June 17th 2022. As of right now, there is no plans on an international date at this current time. The cards will likely either be integrated into a full US set or released through a series of special box products, its important to note that retailer listings has confirmed that the US/International audience would their special set in June, which has not been announced yet. So there’s a possibility that they could have a simultaneous release for both US and Internationally.

For those unaware; Pokemon Go is an 2016 augmented reality (AR) game developed and published by Niantic in collaboration with Nintendo and The Pokemon Company for iOS and Android devices. A part of the Pokemon franchise, the game is the result of a collaboration between Niantic, Nintendo and The Pokemon Company. It uses mobile devices with GPS to locate, capture, train, and battle virtual creatures, called Pokemon, which appear as if they are in the player’s real-world location. The game is free-to-play, with options to purchase certain items at certain times in the game.

The new card set continues a collaboration between Pokemon Go and the Pokemon Trading Card Game which started last year with release of Professor Willow themed card, during that time, Niantic has stated that further collaborations were possible, so it does look like we’re seeing it come into fruition now.

The Pokemon Trading card game is set to release its first English set sometime this month. The new expansion will add a new “VSTAR” mechanic to the game, which gives players the chance to use a VSTAR power once per game. The mechanic acts as a combination of sorts for the Pokemon VMAX mechanic currently used in the game, as well as the GX mechanic used in the previous “Sun and Moon” period. The next set for release is will feature Pokemon from Pokemon Legends; Arceus,a new Pokemon mechanic labelled as “Sparkling Pokemon” is also set to be introduced in the game at some point.

The Pokémon remakes are shining brilliantly in Japan

Earlier in the week, it was reported that Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl had the second-biggest physical launch of 2021, here in the UK, just missing out on FIFA 22‘s top spot.

Now it has been reported the Pokémon remakes have done similar in Japan by becoming the second-biggest physical launches in Japan by far, according to Famitsu.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Between the two Pokémon remakes, 1.39 million copies were sold in the first three days. This includes the standard retail versions, the double-pack editions, download card purchases. Nintendo never releases its sales figures for its eShop, so digital sales for Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are unknown.

The biggest physical launch on Nintendo Switch is still Animal Crossing: New Horizons, with 1.88 million copies sold in the first three days, yet Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have already outsold Pokémon Sword and Shield, which sold 1.36 million copies in the equivalent time.

Obviously, there are currently more Switch users in Japan now than there were in 2019, but since Sword and Shield are on track to be the second-biggest Pokémon titles of all time, it will be interesting to see if Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl can sustain this.

The owner of Serebii.net, Joe Merrick, also shared the physical launch sales for all the games in Japan, further proving the Pokémon remakes success.

The Pokémon Company has released another special collaboration for Pokémon‘s 25th anniversary

If you have forgotten, Pokémon is celebrating 25 years this year and The Pokémon Company has already received a bunch of collaborations in order to celebrate the event.

From limited edition watches to Krispy Kremes, to exclusive anniversary cards and to even a music video collaboration with Katy Perry, Pokémon is getting one heck of a makeover. And the most expensive collaboration so far has only just dropped.

Pokémon x Baccarat

The Pokémon Company has joined forces with French fine crystal designer Baccarat to commemorate the 25th anniversary with a Pikachu statue worth $25,000 (£19,500). The statue is designed by Japanese artist Hiroshi Fujiwara and will be limited to 25 pieces. It stands nearly a foot tall and will be available to purchase at a Baccarat store in either Tokyo, Paris, London, New York, Hong Kong, or Singapore.

Source: Baccarat

If that’s too pricey for you (of course it is) then you’re in luck (only a little bit though). There is a smaller Pikachu you will be able to pre-order at the lower price of $440 (£340), which stands at 5.7 inches tall.

And if you can afford it, why not pair it up with your very own Crystal Pokéball which is 2.7 inches in diameter and is dressed in a gold mesh. It is currently available to purchase- although has already gone out of stock so hopefully will be brought back in- at $410 (£310). The smaller Pikachu releases on November 17.

If those crystal statues are still out of your price range, maybe a Pokéball Wireless Speaker is more your thing or maybe even an Eevee Lamp for more variety in your life.

The Japanese theme park has announced its partnership with The Pokemon Company and we can expect a few rides coming our way!

Exciting news for Pokemon fans! Universal Studios Japan has announced the pocket monsters will be arriving at the attraction park situated in Osaka sometime in 2022!

This will be the first time Pokemon-themed rides and attractions appear in Universal Studios, and thanks to the long-term partnership agreed between Universal Studios and The Pokemon Company, we are in for a treat for the creativity and immersive attractions we can expect to appear early next year.

Pokemon at USJ

Nintendo has already got a feast of attractions at Universal Studios Japan thanks to its recently added Super Nintendo World area that opened earlier this year, and a Donkey Kong expansion that is already in the works. Now, Pokemon is joining the many Nintendo products attraction-park-goers can immersive themselves in.

Universal Studios Japan and The Pokémon Company will enter a long-term partnership to jointly explore ground-breaking entertainment that will immerse guests into the world of Pokémon with innovative technology and creativity beginning in 2022. We are honoured to have a long-term partnership with The Pokémon Company while developing ground-breaking Pokémon entertainment at Universal Studios Japan for both Pokémon fans and our guests. – J.L. Bonnier, President and CEO of Universal Studios Japan.

It is unlikely we will be seeing a new Pokemon area opening up when the Super Nintendo World only just opened after being delayed due to the global pandemic, however, it is possible we will see new rides and attractions opening up in the Super Nintendo World section sometime soon, so definitely keep your Pokeballs at the ready!

The streaming giants are taking another delve into a live-action project- this time featuring PokeBalls

According to Variety, Netflix is taking on another live-action project which will be with our favourite companions, Pokemon.

The series is in early development and nothing can be said about the plot as of yet, however, it is said to be akin to the 2019 movie Detective Pikachu, which starred Ryan Reynolds and Justin Smith, based on the Detective Pikachu game.

Pokemon Live-Action Series: Yay or Nay?

Variety reported that Lucifer co-runner Joe Henderson has been hired as a writer and executive producer for the show. Henderson is currently working on series 6 of Lucifer after it got picked up by Netflix and is also currently developing an adaptation for his comic Shadecraft.

This isn’t the first Pokemon show to make Netflix its home, as previous shows such as Pokemon: Indigo League and Pokemon: Journeys have streamed there amongst others.

Source: Netflix

It’s also not the first game adaptation or live-action project we will be waiting for either. Netflix has announced upcoming animated shows for Tomb Raider, Splinter Cell, Devil Far Cry, as well as upcoming live-action shows for Assassin’s Creed, along with live-action shows for anime and cartoon favourites Cowboy Bebop, Avatar: The Last Airbender and my most anticipated adaptation, One Piece.

With all these different adaptation projects lined up, it’s hard not to be excited, yet also fearful of how they are going to pull these off. Netflix has experienced great success with series such as Castlevania and The Witcher, but not so much with their 2017 movie adaptation of Death Note.

However, this could lead to something more special now there is potential for Netflix and The Pokemon Company to team up with the streaming company moving into the gaming industry.

Pokemon is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary which you can read more about in these blog posts.

The Pokemon Company aren’t taking this celebration lightly. Only a few days after the Pokemon x Seiko announcement, it has revealed incredible new 25th anniversary Pikachu cards.

Japan is the king of “never-knowing-you-needed-something-in-this-world-so-badly-until-they-created-it”. I have spent too much money on novelty I knew I would regret buying but didn’t let that stop me, so seeing the next latest thing they have announced makes me wish I could hop on a plane to fly out there… just to hop onto another plane.

Introducing the Pikachu Jet BC, a brand-new Pikachu-themed aeroplane to celebrate Pokemon’s 25th anniversary, that will be taking flights from Tokyo to Okinawa in order to boost tourism.

Forget about the rare Pikachu car, there’s a new mode of transport in town.

The Pokemon Company teamed up with Japanese low-cost airline Skymark in order to make this adorable and delightful aeroplane. Pokemon planes have existed already, yet this is the first one to be dedicated to Pikachu entirely; specifically The Flying Pikachu.

The exterior is yellow and decorated with images of excited Pikachu in various happy poses, and the interior is rows of warm, beige seats, each with little Pikachu holding balloons designed on the headset. Not only that but if passengers manage to book their seats in the 25th row, they get a Flying Pikachu design, unique to all the others.

The Pikachu Jet BC was unveiled last week at a ceremony accompanied by music, dancing Pikachu mascots, brightly coloured balloons, and giant Pikachu balloons. The aeroplane employees even wore Pikachu-themed face masks.

“Flying Pikachu Project”, a plan conned to stimulate tourism to the tropical islands of Okinawa, will allow Pokemon fans to fly the Pikachu jet on their way to catch the limited edition Okinawa Pikachu in Pokemon GO. Sadly, Japan has not opened up to non-resident foreign nationals and probably won’t for a while, yet The Pokemon Company has expressed its desire to expand its charming designs with non-Japanese airlines, including Scoot, a low-cost Singaporean airline.

May Pikachu continue to dominate this earth with its adorableness.
