The rumored Valve “Deckard” may be true with this patent publishing of a new headset

Valve are no stranger to the virtual reality scene, entering in 2015, partnered with HTC, releasing the SteamVR service, akin to the regular Steam. Later entering the headset market itself, with the Index in 2019, for the high end market, soon joined by Half-Life: Alyx in 2020. Another headset, known as “Deckard” has floated around as a rumor for a long while, but true evidence has finally surfaced.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) published a patent of a new headset design from Valve on the 16th June, alongside these images.

Whilst technical specifications haven’t been listed, it is likely that this headset will be less potent than the Index, if the entry level rumors and Index’s high price point is anything to go by. This will allow Valve to compete against the Oculus Quest 2 and HP Reverb and with claims that there will be 45 million active VR headsets by 2025, a cheaper system allows for a broader demographic to jump in.

Another market on Valve’s radar is the handheld gaming market. With the Nintendo Switch bridging the gap between home and handheld gaming successfully, the Steam Deck is looking to appeal to those looking for much more intense games, with an entry point of £350, good for new consumers wanting something more powerful. However, with only a 64GB embedded MultiMediaCard (eMMC) the 256GB and 512GB models (£459 and £569 respectively) to bring most of your Steam library, will be for those with multiple triple A releases.

The Epic Games Store has launched its ‘Mega Sale‘ with a massive discount on more than 1,600 games!!!!!!!!!!!!

This Promotion will run for the next 4 weeks up until June 16th.

Epic has announced that over 1,600 games and add-ons with discounts of up to 75%. Alongside this gigantic sale on their online store, Epic have also delivered a free coupon to all Epic Games Store accounts worth 25% off purchases priced at, or combining to, £11.99. While this Mega Sale is happening, for the next four weeks gamers will be able to get their hands on free games with Epic Games Store’s “four weeks of blockbuster free tentpole games” starting with very popular title Borderlands 3, now available until May 26th, In 2021, the Epic giveaways began with NBA 2K21 but Epic has yet announce future free titles.

Epic Games Store sales are bound to continue in 2022 with the summer sale following in July and because of this, the storefront has safely secured a spot in the gaming landscape, providing some much-needed competition to Valve and Steam.

Epic Games Store have always been punching upwards when it comes to gaining popularity with storefront with online games stores being incredibly saturated over the past few years and with Sony and Microsoft releasing versions of their consoles that no longer need discs, this means a large chunk of the player base will only exclusively use the stores on the consoles themselves because you can’t purchase games anywhere else. Steam has been the juggernaut of PC gaming and over the last decade so for Epic these huge sale can’t be anything but a positive for them.

Steam is not currently available on Chromebooks, but following a rise in popularity in devices using the OS, it seems like it soon will be, according to a recent google community post. This means some users could see an alpha test for steam show up on their devices.

Valve have been riding high recently, with the huge success of the steam deck. It launched last month, and has been such a hit that it has seemingly exceeded valves expectations. As for the steam platform itself, in 2021 it grew by 31 million users. All this is down to the accessibility of the service, combined with its huge library of games and frequent sales.

Meanwhile google appear to be pulling out of gaming after the disastrous launch of Stadia and its recent rebranding to google Stream. However in its place they have recently stated they are working with valve to bring the steam platform to the Chrome OS. In the recent “Google for Games Developer Summit”, google reps stated that steam had launched into alpha on the device, although this was later clarified as being an “alpha quality” version of steam to come to select Chromebooks soon.

While this is vague, google did also recently post a list of supported Chromebook models for steam, which are:

Acer Chromebook 514

Acer Chromebook 515

Acer Chromebook Spin 713

ASUS Chromebook Flip CX5

ASUS Chromebook CX9

Elemi – HP Pro c640 G2 Chromebook

Lindar (unreleased Lenovo Chromebook)

There was also a release of some minimum specs, such as an 11th gen I5/I7 Processor and over 7GB of ram, which means that for some time steam will probably be limited to higher end devices. However google is reportedly testing steam on 10th gen and AMD processors already, suggesting that they may soon extend the program to lower end devices

Meanwhile recent rumors have suggested Valve may be considering a Subscription style service similar to Xbox Game Pass. Alongside this there are some other games from valve reportedly in development, such as “Citadel”, a rumored halflife universe game, as well as a followup to Half Life Alyx and a Port of Counter Strike Global Offensive to the source 2 engine.

NFT’s. None fungible tokens. A controversial topic right now to be sure. Companies and Crypto-bros keep pushing that these are the future, while it seems almost everyone else is rejecting them outright.

One company not pushing NTF’s and crypto is valve, who have recently banned Crypto and block-chain based games. There was recently some outcry for devs of one of said blockchain based games, “age of rust” spoke out about their disappointment in this decisions, who claimed that steams point of view was that steam didnt want “items that had real world value” on the service… which is a bit strange and personally I am going to call fowl on the devs here because valve themselves have games which have items with real world values.

In a recent interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, valve co-founder gabe newel clarified that he has no issue with owning something digitally or taking part in a shared universe, however the negatives associated with NFT’s far outweighed any positives.

At one point steam actually accepted bitcoin as a payment method for games, but this functionality was cut due to the volatility of the market. Quote:

“Like, why did I spend $497 one day to buy a game, and the next day I spent 47 cents, what’s going on here? Volatility is a bad thing in a medium of exchange. That was one problem, that sort of volatility was creating more pain for our customers than the value of having the option of using cryptocurrencies.”

With NFT’s, the problem is much more over people using them to engage in fraudulent behavior. Quote:

“With the actors that are currently in this NFT space, they’re just not people you really are wanting to be doing business with. That doesn’t say anything about the underlying technology, it’s just a reflection of the people right now who are viewing it as an opportunity to rip customers off, or engage in money laundering, or other things like that.”

Newel asserts that his issue is not with blockchain technology in general, but with the people using them in ways that impact players negatively. Steam banned NFT games back in october of last year, and they are not alone. Recently Square Enix confirmed that NFT’s would never be part of its popular MMO Final Fantasy 14 while unveiling the games 10 year roadmap.

Valves upcoming handheld Laptop/Console Hybrid, the Steam Deck, is on track to launch in February, the company has said recently.

“Global pandemic, supply issues, and shipping issues notwithstanding, it looks like we’ll be able to start getting these out the door by the end of February,” the company has said in a recent update. The steam deck was announced back in July of last year and has been advertised as a “powerful, all-in-one portable PC” capable of running the latest AAA releases. The devices prices start at $399/£349, with increased storage options available for more.

The steam deck was originally intended to launch in December, but was pushed back 2 months due to a shortage of material. In this latest update, valve also said players will be able to see the steam deck verified status start to appear for the games in your steam library. The verified system will let steam deck owners easily tell which games are best suited to be played on the system based on 4 categories: input, Seamlessness, Display and System support.

Valve has also stated they have no interest in any games being exclusive for steam Deck, saying “its a PC and it should play games like a PC”, However it has also been reported that they may be in development of some specifically hand-held friendly games.

However, we did report yesterday that there may still be issues with steam deck and how developers have to implement anti cheat for it.

Why is steam deck and Proton layer a problem, and what even is Proton?

The topic of the steam deck and its proton layer has been a hotly contested issue over the last few months. Valves upcoming Handheld Console/PC/Laptop hybrid runs a version of the open source operating system Linux, which does not play well with many windows games. To fix this, the device will use something called the proton layer to effectively emulate windows functions through the Linux OS, although this brought its own string of problems, such as the fact that most anti cheat software do not play nice with proton.

At Least theoretically this issue was solved last year, when it was announced that steam had worked with anti cheat developers to fix the proton compatibility issues, but in comments made recently by Warhammer: Vermintide and Warhammer 40K: Darktide Developers from Fatshark revealed that it wasn’t quite as simple as initially expected, at least when it comes to Epic Games “Easy Anti Cheat”.

Easy Anti Cheat Woes

“It’s far more complex than first suspected — EAC has two versions. Non-EOS and EOS (Epic Online Services). Most games historically use Non-EOS EAC. It’s the one Vermintide 2 uses as well. Epic only added Proton support for the EOS version of EAC. Therefor in order to implement proton support for Vermintide 2, a huge amount of reworking of the EAC implementation would be required, which may also require all players to authenticate with Epic Online Services as well — perhaps even logging in to the Epic environment (to be confirmed, however).”

This was stated by developer Hedge on the steam, and it really goes to show that the situation with proton and the steam deck is more complicated than we have previously been lead to believe. That having been said, the post does also make it clear this is a problem caused by epic games, rather than by valve.

The post does go on to entail a few options that fatshark have, such as ripping out the current EAC implementation and replacing it with the new Epic Online Services compatible version, but that may require players to log in with an epic games account, and given the general PC gaming populations dislike of the epic games store, that would be a hard pill for the majority of the audience who play on desktop to swallow for the small amount of players who would be using the steam deck.

The obvious hope here would be that epic games does add the availability for proton to the older versions of EAC, but if these newer versions do require epic games accounts to play on the players end… look I hate to be a pessimist but it really makes more sense to epic to force upgrades on developers to get more players stealth-onboarded to their personal store front.

In any case, however, it may take some time for these changes to go through and early adopters of the steam deck may end up left out to dry.

If you play video games on PC, you use Steam. The service has the largest lineup of any PC storefront, ranging from indies to big triple A games, and has an incredibly expansive feature set, including user reviews, Inbuilt mod support, Community forums for games and a simple to use friend system. Against its main competitors (CDPR’s GOG and Epics Epic Games store) steam is riding high (although in the case of Epic thats because that particular storefront is a trainwreck kept alive by fortnite and children with moms credit card. GOGs good, use gog more.)

2022 started with a new concurrent players record for steam, with the service reaching 27,942,458 users last week at its peak. The previous record was set back in november, which sat at about 27.4 million users. Reasonably it would be assumed this record would take some time to break, but as it turns out it has already been smashed.

With the PSVR2 announced, we are doubtless about to be inundated with news and leaks about games that might be coming to the system. However, one of these rumors, Coming from an industry insider, Hints that Valves “Half Life: Alyx” may be making its way to the system.

According to XboxEra co-founder and co-host Nick Baker on twitter, Sony and Valve are working on a deal to bring the critically acclaimed Half life Alyx to PSVR2. According to baker, the deal is an “open Secret”, but they also do not know when the game will be available.

For those looing for Validity in these claims, Baker has proven to be Trustworthy in the past, with him predicting Insomniac where working on another Marvel PS Exclusive (which turned out to be wolverine) and also revealing the May 2021 PSPlus game lineup before the official announcement.

As of Right now, Half Life Alyx available only for PC systems and, being a VR game, only to people ho have a headset. That having been said, PC is different to console in that no store-owner on PC has ever really relied on pushing “Exclusives” in the same way Console manufacturers have, to the point where PC isn’t really seen as a competitor to Console anymore as much as it is a new avenue

It also would not be out of the question for valve to put their first party games on systems they dont own. Their biggest franchises (Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress, Etc) have all been put on consoles at one point or another. Another reason that HL: Alyx had not made the jump to the original PSVR was the devices power and its controller. The Initial PSVR headset is fine, but maybe the PS4 would not have been able to keep up with the Intense Visuals of Half Life Alyx, and also the headset used a normal Dualshock 4 to control the games. Given that Alyx makes use of extensive Hand controls, It would have made the game incredibly difficult to work around into being on the PSVR.

As for the Half-Life series, Valve dev Robin Walker has implied the series will continue, although in what form it will take, be it Half-Life 3 or a rumored Spinoff designed specifically for the Steam Deck, is currently unclear.

While Valves steam deck still has many unknowns, especially when it comes to the library of games it will work with, there have been 4 recent additions to the list of games confirmed to work with the platform. On Friday, Valve announced that Arma 3, DayZ, Unturned and Planetside 2 all feature working battlEye anti-Cheat when playing them through Proton (Proton being the Software the steam Deck will use to make Windows games run in Linux). These game join ARK: Survivisl Evolved and Mount And Blade II: Bannerlord for a total of six windows titles that Linux users can play without interference from anti-cheat software.

This number is… Rather low however you slice it. According to valve the technology is ready to go and all developers need to do is reach out to ask for it to be activated in their games. The current list is also missing some steam heavy hitters, such as Rainbow Six Siege and PUBG. as of right now we still do not have a full picture of all of the games that will work with Steam Deck and its Linux-Based operating system, but it is something valve have promised to clear up through a new “Verification Program” before the handheld launches in early 2022.
