May 4th is Star Wars day, and in honour of the occasion we’re taking a look at Star Wars’ love affair with gaming. Star Wars has been a part of gaming culture since the early days of arcade games, and its influence can be seen in almost every genre. Whether it’s first-person shooters, strategy games, or RPGs, Star Wars has left its mark on gaming. In this article, we’ll take a look at some of the most popular Star Wars games and how they’ve changed gaming as a whole. May the Fourth be with you!

Star Wars has been a part of the gaming world since the early days of arcades with games like Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. These games were some of the first to use licensed characters and settings from movies, and they set the stage for decades of Star Wars games to come. While these early Star Wars games were simple compared to today’s standards, they laid the groundwork for the Star Wars games we know and love today.

One of the most popular genres for Star Wars games is the first-person shooter. Games like Star Wars: Battlefront and Star Wars: Republic Commando let players experience the thrill of combat in the Star Wars universe. These games are popular for their fast-paced action and immersive Star Wars setting. Knights of the Old Republic is an RPG set thousands of years before the events of the Star Wars movies. The game features an in-depth story with complex characters and moral choices that affect the outcome of the game. Knights of the Old Republic was so successful that it spawned a sequel, Star Wars: The Old Republic, which is an MMO set in the same time period.

Recently, the release of Lego Star Wars: Skywalker Saga has been a great deal of Star Wars fans trying to secure the game for their console. The hype leading up to and after the game’s release was incredible, and continues to pay homage to the Star Wars world.

Star Wars games are some of the most popular and influential games in the industry. From early arcade games to modern day first-person shooters, Star Wars has left its mark on gaming. There are a number of recent and upcoming games, films and tv shows that use various cultures and mythologies to drive their stories. This series aims to explore the relationship between an IP and its surrounding mythology and how this shapes its characters. Today, we look at the tv show Moon Knight, exploring the character design of Khonshu and his links to Egyptian Mythology.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Moon Knight. 

Moon Knight

Moon Knight is Disney+‘s latest TV show set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Oscar Isaac stars as Steven-‘with a v’-Grant, a museum gift-shop employee, who has blackouts and a sleeping disorder. Steven learns he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with Marc Spector, a mercenary. Steven is suddenly thrust into a world of violent Egyptian mythology when it turns out Marc Spector is the chosen avatar of Khonshu, the Egyptian god of the moon. Under the guise of Moon Knight, Steven and Marc must work together if they are to overcome the evil forces that seek destruction of the world.

But who exactly is Khonshu?

In the TV show, Khonshu is a mysterious figure that seems to haunt both Steven’s mind and city rooftops. A violent god who uses his avatar to kill people – the god seems to be a mix of a petulant child throwing temper tantrums and a narcissist, claiming to be “true justice”. This unpleasant mix is also seen in the comics, with Khonshu manipulating Marc Spector to do his bidding and bring “vengeance” on those he deems deserving. The similarities between the comics and the TV show also extends into the character design of Khonshu. The god is presented as a looming figure, wrapped in bandages with a large bird’s skull for a head. But who exactly is this god?

Khonshu is based on the Egyptian god Khonsu. Khonsu was the god of the moon, but also associated with fertility and healing. It’s thought the name Khonsu comes from the Egyptian word, khenes, meaning to wander or travel. Khonsu, as the personification of the moon, would travel across the sky and was changeable in his nature – waxing and waning throughout the year.

Seen as the sole source of light during the night, Khonsu was seen as a protector against evil – battling the darkness, while Ra descended into the underworld to do battle there. Closely related with the darkness, therefore, Khonsu was also seen as a violent and vengeful god – and it’s here we see the links with the comic book Khonshu. In fact, Khonsu is mentioned in both the Pyramid Texts and Coffin Texts – Ancient Egyptian sources – as a force of vengeance. The Pyramid Texts state “he is the envoy who is sent to punish” and this is clearly echoed in Moon Knight, where Khonshu declares “I only punish those who deserve it, I am true justice.”

On a side note, it is also interesting how the concept of Khonsu changed over time. This is the only mention of Khonsu in the Pyramid Texts, suggesting he wasn’t that prevalent in early Egyptian mythology. This might explain why in the TV show, Khonshu seems to be sidelined by the major deities of the Egyptian pantheon. However, in the later Coffin texts, Khonsu is mentioned far more often, suggesting he had grown in importance. And by the time of the New Kingdom, when his temple was built at Karnak, he was described as “the greatest god of the great gods.” An epithet that was also used in Vol 188 of the Moon Knight comics.

The Iconography of Khonsu and Khonshu

The Egyptian god Khonsu was either depicted in mummiform or wearing a bird head. In the TV show and comics, we see Khonshu’s design takes both these elements. The mummified aspect in Egyptian iconography was probably used to point towards the eternal aspect of the god. But it also perhaps points to his protection of the wandering souls, seen in the Coffin Texts. In the comics and TV show, it serves to connect Khonshu with Ancient Egypt and also adds a disturbing element to the character. The flowing robes of the character also makes it feel ghostly – as well as a priestly image.

The TV and comics also make use of the bird head depiction. However, whilst in Ancient Egypt Khonsu was presented with a hawk or falcon head, Khonshu seems to have a raven or crow head. The falcon or hawk in Ancient Egypt was a symbol of power and sight – king of the sky overlooking his domain. However, the character design of Khonshu once again focuses on death imagery, with ravens and crows being carrion and scavengers of corpses. In addition, the use of a skull creates this unsettling image and the long, overreaching beak creates a more threatening feel than that of a hawk or falcon.

With this in mind, it is clear the character design seems to pull as much from Grim Reaper iconography as it does Egyptian mythology. With his flowing bandages, hollow skull and crescent moon-adorned staff, the character seems designed to evoke the image of Death – which can only be bad news for Steven ‘with a v’.

Gaming and filming rights to J.R.R Tolkien projects including The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit are reportedly up for sale and the rumors suggest that Amazon is leading the race for both.

According to Variety, J.R.R owner Saul Zaentz Co. has hired ACF Investment Bank to orchestrate the sale of its Tolkien holdings. The holdings include; merchandising, live events and theme parks, reports suggest that the cost of the holdings are valued at $2 billion. The Saul Zaentz Co was set up by producer Saul Zaentz who died back in 2017. He was responsible for Oscar-winning films like One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Amadeus and The English Patient.

As stated above, Amazon have an interest in obtaining the rights to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit licenses, Amazon are also set to launch a new Lord of the Rings TV show in September. Currently, Amazon are leading the race to obtain the rights at this time.

It has been put forward that Amazon could have possibly spent over or at least £500 million pounds on the first eight episodes of the upcoming TV adaption; The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Interestingly enough, last April, Amazon Game Studios said it had cancelled a Lord of the Rings MMO it was co-developing with Athlon Games, a US subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Leyou Technologies. The cancellation of that project was due to a dispute between Amazon and Tencent  which acquired Leyou in December 2020.

Xbox’s video game subscription is about to get more interesting for anime fans…

Microsoft has announced a surprising, yet exciting collaboration for its video game streaming service, Xbox Game Pass. It is offering its subscribers a 75-day free trial with the anime subscription giant, Crunchyroll.

That’s right, 75 days of anime. For free.

The promotion is on offer to all of those subscribed to the platform’s mega fan tier, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Players will be able to watch 1000s of anime from Crunchyroll’s library without ads and with the ability to watch with offline viewing, or be able to stream content on 4 devices at the same time.

However, subscribers only have until February 8 2022 to be able to take advantage of this offer. It is also only available to new Crunchyroll customers so if you already have a Crunchyroll subscription, you are sadly not applicable for the 75-day free trial. The trial is also set to auto-renew so make sure to keep an eye out for when the subscription is activated.

There are plenty of titles on offer for you to choose from such as One Piece, which is gearing up for its 1000th episode, or Jujutsu Kaisen which has received a trailer for its upcoming movie release recently, or better yet, you could wait until Attack on Titan: The Final Season starts and use the 75-day free trial to watch that anticipated finale.

It’s certainly an interesting move from Crunchyroll to be teaming up with Xbox Game Pass since Sony recently bought the anime streaming company for $1.175 billion from its previous owner, AT&T. Yet Sony’s competition with Microsoft for its consoles clearly comes second here and the quest to get more people subscribed to Crunchyroll takes priority.

Yet fear not PlayStation players. Thanks to Sony’s acquisiton, PlayStation’s own video game subscription service also offers a premium tier which includes a Crunchyroll subscription alongside.

PlayStation Now has long lived in the shadow of the Xbox Game Pass, providing better services for their customers with the content handed out, pushing Xbox users to believe that the subscription service is a necessary part of owning the console. Unfortunately, Sony’s service hasn’t had the same impact since its launch in 2014.

Back 4 Blood, Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite are already available to Xbox Game Pass members to pre-download, leaving PS Now members scratching their heads as to why they get left in the dark with old titles for streaming.

Although some of them have been great on PS Now, including, a game of the year, God of War, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn, now, these are all fantastic games. If you’ve not given them a go, they’re all worth it, but there is no competition compared to some of Xbox’s biggest titles being made available to its game pass subscribers.

One of Sony’s most prolific games is now coming to the subscription service, The Last of Us 2. A storyline that is currently being made into a featured series. Ellie and Joel’s story, their battle against infected, mutated monsters, and their unmutated counterparts. Although the first instalment had Ellie and Joel traversing through the apocalyptic world in search of a notorious group of survivors, the second takes a much darker spin on the popular game, playing as different characters to read two individual stories as they happen simultaneously.

As well as The Last of Us 2, multiple other games joined the subscription service this month. These include Fallout 76, Final Fantasy 8: Remastered, Amnesia: Collection, Desperados 3, Yet Another Zombie Defence HD and Victor Vran: Overkill Edition. Again, it might be biased, but there’s only one standout game involved here. You can see a more detailed description of these titles here.

Although new titles aren’t readily available as a subscription service, classic fan favourites such as Oblivion and Star Wars the Force Unleashed are streamable. Among these are hundreds of other games on the streaming service. So all may not be lost for Sony’s attempt at this service.

Seeing the success of Xbox Game Pass, Sony is attempting the same, even if they may be a few steps behind in the process, for the price of it (£8.99 a month) and the number of titles at the click of a button, it’s got to be worth it surely?

Naughty Dog has finally confirmed that a multiplayer component is on the way.

We previously reported found evidence of a The Last of Us 2 multiplayer component in development. This was the result of a data miner, Speclizer, uncovering the files. However, Naughty Dog hadn’t commented on the findings, and we weren’t entirely sure if a multiplayer title was even in their plans anymore. Well, Naughty Dog has reassured fans that the project is still in development in a special community update during the celebratory ‘The Last of Us Day.’

Answering the question of what’s happening with The Last of Us right now, Naughty Dog’s Rochelle Snyder confirmed that the multiplayer project is still on the way, stating the company is “in full swing of hiring for MP-related positions.”

Naughty Dog is currently involved in several projects right now, including The Last of Us HBO TV series and Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves, a PS5 remaster of Uncharted 4 and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy that’s also making its way to PC courtesy of developer Iron Galaxy.

The television adaptation of the beloved PlayStation exclusive series has revealed its first look

Naughty Dog Co-President, Neil Druckmann, who is the creative director and writer of the PlayStation Exclusive series The Last of Us, has shared an image of the set on “The Last of Us Day”.

Druckmann will be a director of HBO’s first series, which is sourced from an updated production list on the Directors Guild of Canada website from earlier this month. There will be five directors working on the series. Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin is listed as one of the directors and is co-writing and executive producing the show alongside Neil Druckmann.

The pilot episode is directed by Kantemir Balagov, who has uploaded a photo on Instagram expressing his gratitude for working on the series. The Last of Us adaptation is the first television series from PlayStation Productions, a studio formed by Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt its original game properties for film and TV.

In this series, Joel Miller is played by Pedro Pascal; he is known for his role as Javier Peña in the Netflix series Narcos. Ellie is played by Bella Ramsey, who is known for playing Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones. Another confirmed character and casting, who is not shown in the shared picture, is Joel’s daughter, Sarah. She is played by Nico Parker, the daughter of actress Thandie Newton, the starring actress of 2019’s Dumbo.

The production, which is set to wrap in June 2022, is expected to cover the events of The Last of Us (2013) and may include content based on The Last of Us Part 2 (2020). Filming is underway in Alberta, Canada, with its streets redesigned to look like the streets of Austin, Texas.

A data miner has uncovered what seems to be the shelved multiplayer assets for The Last of Us 2…

A data miner, going by the name of Speclizer, recently shared what is allegedly multiplayer assets for The Last of Us 2. These multiplayer assets hint towards a Battle Royale mode that could have potentially come to Naughty Dog’s title.

Speclizer highlights what seems to be a prop displaying a big multiplayer map with several locations from The Last of Us 2’s single-player campaign, including Adler Park, Camallito, and Port of Camallito. The map also includes several points of interest like Gas Station, Nature Center, Estate, and Motel.

It’s not just the size and layout of the map that suggests a The Last of Us 2 battle royale mode may have been in the works. As Speclizer points out, the hidden multiplayer files also revealed other genre trademarks, including a compass, player count, and emote wheel.

The Last of Us 2 was originally supposed to have an online multiplayer component at launch, but Naughty Dog shelved it to focus on the single-player experience. At the time, the studio confirmed that a Factions successor (the first entry’s multiplayer mode) was still in development in some form but that it wouldn’t be part of The Last of Us 2. The most common assumption seems to be that Factions 2 will be a standalone release set in the same universe as The Last of Us 2.

It’s worth noting, though, that none of this is official. Even if these assets were legitimately developed, there’s no guarantee that any of them will make it to developer Naughty Dog’s standalone multiplayer title. Furthermore, neither the studio nor publisher Sony has commented on what Speclizer has found.

While Naughty Dog has been pretty quiet about its confirmed standalone The Last of Us multiplayer experience, more details have slowly emerged, such as job postings from June highlighting the developer’s vision for the title.

Stay explores what it’s like to be a ‘regular’ in the universe of The Last of Us.

The world is patiently waiting for the upcoming HBO The Last Of Us TV series, which has been gathering hype over the last month, following casting announcements etc. In anticipation, fans across the globe have taken it amongst themselves to release various self-made projects ranging from the upcoming film Project Spores to a handful of well-edited movie concept trailers. Well, it seems this train keeps on rolling as we have been given another diamond to enjoy.

There is a new The Last Of Us-inspired fan-made short-film on the block called Stay. It was released on Youtube this week, and it is awe-inspiring. You can check out the short film below:

If you’ve played either of Naughty Dog’s acclaimed games, you know that some of the richest stories are told in the peripheral. Stay draws on this, exploring what it could be like to live in a world of The Last of Us without being featured on the front cover.

Stay reflects the emotional warmth, depth and potency that Naughty Dog’s franchise is known for in just over seven minutes.

The film’s official description (from Youtube) is as follows:

“Stay is the story of two survivors whose hope for the Santa Monica Pier lights their path through the ruthless, dying world of The Last of Us.

It was made by a team of filmmakers, VFX artists, and fans of the game to tell an original story in the world of The Last of Us. I’m extremely grateful for everyone who worked so hard to bring this story to life.”
