Oh, Lost Ark, thank you for being co-developed by Amazon Games, now I can flex my New World-roasting hamstring again! Can’t be as cartoonishly harsh as usual on account of Lost Ark becoming quite well-received, but hey, I like a challenge.

For a little while though, some players have had difficulties accessing premium content in-game, some not even able to touch the in-game store.

A community manager of the official Lost Ark forum shared a statement regarding the missing premium items and store updates here… Sweet Baby Jesus, I’m not even joking when I say the Lost Ark and New World forum website formats are… Uncannily similar, to put it mildly! If I didn’t know any better, I’d say Amazon Games might’ve given up on trying to salvage New World and jump ship to something that’s running a tighter one… But what do I know.

And on that note, Lost Ark has been encountering some server instability issues in largely European regions, in part due to high player traffic, which… Between this, New World’s similar issue and the PS5 sales shortage, I think I smell a recurring 2020’s theme coming on.

‘So when will these missing Premium Content items, Crystalline Auras and more come back? Well, the developers are working on a fix. There is no exact date or time for the upcoming update that will fix most of those “major commerce-related issues.

It is important to note that the developers are “hoping” to include all the fixes in the Lost Ark update and on 15th February 2022, they noted “we are prepping for this coming week’ – Lost Ark Manager  TrevzorFTW.

Amazon recently released a statement confirming plans to crack down on the problem of bots in New World. As a result, thousands of in-game bot accounts have been banned… I’m sorry, the fact I’m more surprised that the New World team HAVEN’T purposely wiped swathes of it’s player base from itself is probably more telling about the game’s reception than you think!

So, you win this time Amazon! You’ve been spared this time around from the ritualistic roasting I partake in whenever some new glitch or bug pops up in New World. Parting from that pastime for the remainder of this blog is such sweet sorrow, but I shall… If I can help it.

An Apt Summary Of The Nature of Bots: A great many video games use bots to varying degrees. For example: Sometimes, when Fortnite matches are a few players short of the usual Full Monty (100 player combatants), the game will slap-dash a handful of bots to make the difference. Many bots in contemporary digital media are made or inserted by players for a variety of reasons, ranging from hacking and scams, to advertising and grinding (not in the fun way). While banning bot accounts is useful, this is only a temporary solution to a self-perpetuating problem that requires ways of systematically making it harder for bot accounts to be made.

On The Bot Problem: It appears the bots of New World aren’t just any run-of-the-mill vagabonds, but in fact, mostly high-level warriors that have been spawning at quite an alarming rate. These heathens have even been harvesting important materials set aside for players!

If I may be so bold, this is a most-unfair experience to have to go through indeed. I mean, going about your day in The New World without a care in it, only to find out your lands have been virtually COLONISED by the robot uprising Stephen Hawking tried to tell us about!

Statements From The Amazon On The Bot Problem:

“We’re aware of player reports about increased bot activity in New World. Bots pose a persistent challenge for MMOs, and our team has deployed dedicated resources and tooling to identify and combat them”

“We banned over 7,700 accounts for using bots. Our goal is to ensure New World is fun and fair for all players. We’ll post updates to the New World forums and Twitter as we have them”.

Good, Bad and Ugly News: While Amazon is taking steps to fix this problem, a great many others still exist in New World, including the item-duplication bug that’s lead to in-game trading posts getting #Cancelled.

On the bright side, New World has seen incredibly generous reductions to the game’s housing tax system, but that does ring a little hollow considering the company owner practically owns the free market in real life!

New World. Honey. Baby. Sweet Prince. Sugar lips. Brother from another mother that loved another to smother under covers with Danny Glover… Actually, we DON’T need to talk about branding this time. Because at this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if you were doing this on purpose for attention! To which I say, ‘fair play to ya, as long as I keep getting paid to take the Mick, I’m a happy duck’.

Amazon, admittedly, has addressed the issues with New World and has been very candid about how a fair amount of the game’s issues being the result of a specialized bot not picking up on things, but hey, you win some you lose some. And in this case, what you lose is THE ABILITY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE FREE MARKET… In the game of course.

Admittedly can’t put ALL the blame on the folks at Amazon here, the reason the trading posts in New World have been disabled now is because of a player fiddling a little too hard with the mechanics and discovering a new exploit.

A dramatic explanation of the exploit in the character of a wise old mentor in the pending post-apocalypse of 2020 Part 3: “Long ago, in the firey depths of Tartarus, a cunning warrior of phallus-thickeningly epic proportions discovered a way to duplicate difficult-to-craft items and re-sell them at exorbitant prices. Even going so far as to “dupe” in-game trophies! For you see! Upon discovering one could eat a deep-fried pumpkin-battered lamb chop in one hand and exploit video game hacks with the other, THUS, the first capitalist was born… But why do the ruins have so many part-bitten apples and strangely-curved legally-distinct logos laying around”?

Why Trophies? Trophies are furnishing items tied to the game’s housing system that provide the player with powerful passive bonuses that remain active in every zone of the game. Think “what if that hand-furnished IKEA table I got on sale inexplicably made me better skydiving”. Players can have up to 5 trophies at a time in their in-game lodging and are very powerful.

The players who discovered the duplication glitch allegedly tried to inform Amazon’s Developer Team of the issue to no avail, which resulted in them going public. Based on fan discourse and criticisms, Amazon’s leniency with the “duping” crowd honestly makes no sense. I mean, the whole point of games like this is you DON’T want people to be able to make cool things super easily on their own, look at Fortnite! It took me grinding through around 3 seasons of Fortnite to get by own cosmetic skin without having to pay legal tender for Vbucks! It may not be ideal for me, but it’s a good system if you want to incentivise people to pay real money to get in-game cosmetics (or in this case in-game special abilities).

What does the future hold for Amazon Games’ RPG?

Forbes’ recent analysis of data on SteamCharts has shown us that Amazon Games’ new RPG has been losing around 135,000 players a week since its initial launch at the end of September. It hit an impressive concurrent player peak of 913,027 players on October 3rd; however, almost half of its one million player base has been lost since then.

By monitoring player numbers at the same time on every Sunday since New World launched, the number of players simultaneously online has fallen week on week from 913K players to 726K, 608K, and – on October 23 – 508K, which is a little less than half of the player numbers the game saw at the start of the month.

Player numbers fluctuate all the time, of course, particularly for single-player games that might not have much replayability about them. On the other hand, New World is an MMO. Therefore, it would likely expect to retain players, particularly as it’s currently sitting on a “mostly positive” aggregate score from 138,000+ players reviews on Steam.

This continuous outflow of concurrent players may be due to a host of reasons. Any of the games’ glitches and bugs could be responsible, whether it is related to server queue times, gear clipping, messages crashing players games, bricked GPUs… who knows. Will New World continue to be successful in the long run? I guess we just have to wait to find out.

The issues continue to stockpile for Amazon Games’ RPG.

New World’s launch, despite its success, has been riddled with bugs and glitches, whether it gear clipping, bricked GPUs, server queue times, or something else entirely. However, this latest glitch is one of the strangest yet. You can now kick players out of their games by sending them specific messages.

This began with a player discovery that if you insert HTML code into a chat, the game will read it as code. So one of the first things people worked out was possible was to start inserting images into that chat, spamming players with random pictures that could, if big enough, fill a huge section of the left of the screen.

That, as annoying as it is, is also essentially harmless. More damaging to player’s ability to enjoy the game is the fact some folks also worked out that if you sent a message containing a specific custom code related to an item, the receiver’s PC would look for that code locally, not be able to find it, start looping around looking for it all over again then crash their game.

The same chat box exploit could be employed to spawn gold out of nothing by tricking the game into thinking you’d just got an item that was required to complete a quest, giving you 50 gold each time.

The bug/exploit has now been fixed, confirmed by Amazon’s post on the game’s forum.

Well… that was brief.

We reported yesterday that character transfers between servers have been added to Amazon Games Studio’s new MMORPG. Well, it turns out this was only for a brief moment as this has now been placed on pause. This is because these transfers have caused a glitch allowing players to duplicate gold.

The bug came about after the MMORPG’s 1.0.3 update this week. It makes it, so characters don’t save properly after transferring, letting them trade gold and items to others while magically keeping it in their own pockets. Amazon has paused server transfers for the time being to work on a fix and has warned players that those caught exploiting the glitch will be banned.

After transfers went live, Amazon explained that they identified several characters who were in “an invalid data state”, preventing the character from properly saving. Players reported receiving the “Character_Persist_Failure” error code, claiming their progress reset after transferring, and some were even disconnected from the game. Others figured out that if they sent a load of gold to another player, logged off, then logged back in, both players would keep the same pile of cash.

Amazon has informed us that abusing a glitch like this is a bannable offence: “All of these transactions are logged in our database. We are reviewing them now, and any players found deliberately using this condition to gain an advantage will be banned for exploiting. We will also remove items, or gold received where appropriate.”

The developers briefly thought they’d fixed the issue and dealt with the characters stuck in this state. But as players continued to transfer over the last couple of days, it seems it’s become a more extensive ongoing problem. So, they’ve paused character transfers for now and will turn them back on when they’ve fixed the exploit.

Players are now able to change to their friend’s servers…

The hot off the block MMORPG, New World, has been continuously welcoming in new players from around the globe since its launch. Developed by Amazon Games Studio, the game has become popular for several reasons, such as its battle mechanics and atmosphere. Taking place in an alternate 17th century, players work at colonizing a fictional world called Aeternum. While many enjoy the gameplay, New World is not without issues, whether it’s server queue wait times, gear clipping, or rumours of bricked GPUs. One of the more recent frustrations players are having is the inability to transfer characters to other servers. However, I bring good news, the developer has listened.

In the title’s latest update, server transfers have, in fact, been brought to the game. With the addition of server transfers, players can now move from one world to another. This update is a game-changing move from the developer, as it means players, who were locked into a server at release, can now quickly jump to another server to play with friends. It is worth noting that while this update allows players to join other friends’ worlds, they cannot join worlds in other regions. However, this could come in the future from the developer as well.

The developer revealed that the process of adding the server transfer feature had been a priority since the game launched. According to the patch notes, the feature had been tested extensively by the developers over the last 2 weeks.

In the patch notes for the update, the developer listed the steps necessary to complete a server transfer. First, the player needs to log into their character. Once this is accomplished, they must go to the in-game store and claim the character transfer token. According to the developer, the player needs to leave their current Company and remove all Trading Post sell and buy orders. After completing these few steps, the player must travel to a sanctuary location to finish the transfer.

Fortunately, players can breathe a sigh of relief as almost everything earned before the transfer is saved. Some things that transfer over include houses and decorations, inventory and storage, currency, character progression, and quest progress. The few items that fail to carry over to the new server include Company membership and Trading Post orders (these must be terminated before transferring), along with friends lists since they are world-specific.

First Stop: A Brave New World

New World is an MMORPG, or Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game for those of you that still remember what touching grass feels like. Lots of players from around the world have been clogging up the servers, and with so many people trying to get on all at once, the New World developers have currently disabled the in-game Character Creation feature in order to free up server space and let more people play without making the game run like day-old cement on a cold winter’s day.

That said, some servers that aren’t full do have access to the character creator, but I imagine kneecapping one of your game’s best features is going to cause a little teeny tiny amount of vocal dissatisfaction from customers, to put it mildly.

New World was developed by the folks at Amazon Games of all places, so this whole debacle will likely end up being a small hiccup on Jeffery Bezos’ continued Capitalist Planetary-Conquering To-Do List that we’ll lovingly look back on with a laugh during our scheduled 30-second break periods on Elon Musk’s Miner’s For Mars program… But until then, here’s a little snippet of the cosmic horror we’re getting from New World right now:

A New World Developer also recently stated the following: “Due to the incredible demand we have seen for New World, we have been working hard to increase the number of servers and increase the capacity of all available servers,” the developer says. “We are also implementing a system to prevent new players from creating new characters in full servers”.
