What is arknights

Arknights is a Tactical Tower defense game from Chinese Developer Studio Montagne that is available for Android devices. 

The game follows the story of “The Doctor”, who you play as, after they awaken from a coma and are quickly put incharge of the Private military portion of “rhodes Island”, a pharmaceutical company looking into a cure for the highly infectious disease known as Oripathy. Also Catgirls. Lots of catgirls. And catboys is thats your thing. At the same time, the Extremist Faction known as “reunion”, comprised of people who are infected with Oripathy, have began a terrorist campaign that threatens to destabilize the world. Arknights story is part political thriller, part tragic character drama and part Anime.

The game is a gacha Game, meaning you need to “Pull” for units which are graded on a star based rarity system, similar to Genshin Impact. The characters you pull are known as operators and can then be used in stages that take the form of A tower defense style system. Every character is unique (although most do fit into broader Classes and subclasses) and everyone’s strategy with a stage will be different based on what team they have.

Arknights has recently been confirmed to be getting an anime adaptation, scheduled for release in the not too distant future, so if the game itself doesn’t seem to be your style then maybe check out the show when it launches. You can watch the teaser trailer here:

Chapter nine

The latest main story chapter for arknights, Stormwatch, is going to be launching at the games daily reset at 11AM tomorrow. It is the first chapter of the game set after the “reunion” aRc of the story, and will feature a number of new mechanics coming to the game.

For one thing, there are now pillars that you can knock down to block enemy paths using a device given in limited amounts during the stage, as well as a new “Refraction” mechanic that buffs you enemies.

To gain access to chapter 9’s story you will need to clear everything up until chapter 9, INCLUDING chapter 8, and its tough as nails final boss fight against reunions leader, Talulah.

Login Event

With the launch there will be a 7 day log in reward. Log in every day to get new items, including 9000 LMD. 400 Orundum and the “sing a song” skin for Pinecone.

Further more, for the next few weeks, all stages also get a chance to drop 1 of 2 items, those being emergency sanity samples (used to recover 10 sanity) and a supply box which gives random materials,.

Man I have forced my obsession with this little tower defense Gacha game into so much, do I really need to do this again?

In any case, Arknights is a tactical tower defense mobile game in which you take control of the Doctor, a thousand year old amnesiac who is then made to command the private military of a pharmaceutical company comprised mostly of cat-girls, most of whom are also dying of Super cancer.

Contingency Contract 6: Wild Scales

So, contingency contract (CC colloquially) is basically the end game activity for arknights. Stages normally rotate daily but occasionally there will be a special event like this one which will introduce a single new map and challenge the player to complete it at the highest difficulty they can manage. Dificulty is decided based on tags you can select before the event starts that alter how you approach the stage. Maybe you cant deploy a certain type of unit, maybe enemies do more damage. Combining as many of these as possible and clearing the stage is the ultimate goal here.

The New map

The new map for Wild scales takes elements from 2 old story events: “Gaviel and the great chief returns, which lends is crocodilian enemies to the fray”, and “Operation: Originium Dust”, the crossover event with rainbow 6 siege from which the sandstorm mechanic comes.

Just to give a refresh on the sandstorm, even though I get the feeling that originium dust was a big onboarding point for people with this game, Operators who are stood in the sandstorm without defense will have their attack reduced and take continuous damage. To block the storm there are some Dirt mounds which offer protection, however these break over time. To be fair, this is mainly to stop stalling on this map, as without it the map generally be completed before any of the mounds break (save 2 which are destroyed by enemies). By default the storm is blowing from left to right, meaning you can place operators semi-safely anywhere on the right of the dirt mounds. There are 2 Modifiers which change this, one which makes the wind blow right to left, and one added during the events second week that means that the wind blows top to bottom

This event is adding a few new additions to the permanent CC store:

• “Casual Vactaion” Skin for Warfarin
• “Imps House” Skin for Rope (formerly a login reward)
• “Operation Wild Scales Banner” Furniture Peice
• Epic Medic token X4
• Epic Guard token X4

Banner

Being a gacha game, Arknights requires you to pull on a banner to gain new characters. There is no new banner included in this event, however the “unbound reflux” banner is rerunning. This was the banner that introduced 6 Star operator Thorns to the game, who is considered one of the games strongest characters, so pulling is encouraged, if not required due to other upcoming events taking precedent, like the rapidly approaching launch of Chapter 8 and Salieach.

The Unbound reflux Banner has increased rates on the following operators

• Thorns (6star “lord” guard)
• Andreana (5star “deadeye” Sniper)
• Provence (5star “heavyshooter” sniper)
• Jaye (4star “Merchant” specialist)

The rest

Finally, we will be getting reruns of some of the Coral Coast Skins, and the Rim Billiton Futniture set.

Vigilo: Doctor Who?

Vigilo is the latest mini event from the game. This one is a bit different from others as its way more story relevant than mini events normally are, focusing on the backstory of the doctor. Bearing in mind the last time we got a super story focused Mini event was Children of Ursus, an event whose story is regarded in the community as one of the most dark and disturbing portions of the games story… yeah I think we are in for a doozy.

The event will feature 10 stages, although the story of the event is not told through these stages, instead being unlocked as visual-novel esque scenes through a separate part of the store. Event currency is earned from completing any stage in the game, not just story stages, so dont feel you need to farm event stages. the 10 event stages are extreamly tough, however, with all of them being boss stages, and the final stage having 7 bosses that you need to defeat.

Event store

This event is relatively simple as compared to previous events. There are no new operators added to the game, no new skins in the shop (the skins that were meant to appear where added alongside the Gavial and the great chief returns rerun that has just ended), and there is no new furniture sets. There is a new skin, available though the event store, the “wastewalker” skin for Provenance.

Beta leakers say the new Spiral Abyss is the toughest yet.

Each update of Genshin Impact brings new characters, events, and (of course) a new challenge in the Spiral Abyss. Players have struggled with the latest Abyss, which functions as a colossal DPS check. While the rest of the game is straightforward, the Spiral Abyss is on another level. For an average endgame player like me, I’m usually able to all-clear floors 9 through 11, but floor 12 is a real challenge to all-star.

A leaker claimed that you will need some very high investment, well-built teams if you aren’t a ‘whale’ player with multiple high-constellation 5 stars. Reminder: a 5-star character with maxed out cons can run you for a few thousand.

I’m really not a fan of this – what’s the fun in paying to win? The Abyss was clearable with even all 4-star teams back in the day. But now it’s getting harder and harder, at a rate faster than the average player can improve their account.

Not only that, but the rewards are still sitting at a measly 150 primos for a 9 star clear. Really, people are only clearing it for the street cred, if you will. But honestly, what’s impressive about brute forcing a challenge with expensive DPS?

There are numerous protests in the comment section, but most agreed that the new Rifthound enemies are a huge pain and are one of the worst types of enemies miHoYo has ever added to the game. If your team composition is melee-based, it makes these enemies even more challenging. There are only two ranged weapon types in the game – Bow and Catalyst. Even fewer of these characters are strong DPS units. The constant jumping around makes it almost impossible for players to land their DPS rotation. Not only that, but the corrosion effect forces you into bringing a healer to your party, taking a valuable spot that could be used for more DPS.

The Spiral Abyss had been relatively consistent in its difficulty until Genshin 2.0 when Inazuma was introduced. Ever since then, the difficulty has been ramping up with each update. The biggest issue is that new players won’t be able to catch up and have missed the runs/reruns of many of the strongest characters for the Abyss. If you don’t have the legend of crowd control, Venti, some floors with tons of smaller enemies are near impossible. While Sucrose might be able to help you out, we haven’t seen her on a banner in a while either. If you’re stuck, you’re stuck. One tip: the anemo traveller does have some crowd control capabilities and may be worth investing in if you’re struggling with these floors.

It’s not that Genshin players don’t want more challenging game content – we absolutely do. But making existing content harder instead of creating new, harder content with more rewards to incentivise challengers is the way to go. Instead, casual and free to play players – and perhaps even mid-spenders, are slowly getting locked out of existing content.

Preluding lights: whats that?

Preluding lights is the newest story event for the game. This is a mini story event, meaning there is not multi-stage storyline. Instead, you buy information fragments using earned currency in the shop and use those to unlock Visual novel style cutscenes featuring the characters.

That doesnt mean there are not any stages, though, there are 10 limited access stages, they just dont have any soty attached to them and are just there for farming. With that in mind, only 1 stage is considered more efficient than normal stages for materials, that being the Stage “PL-5”, which can be used to farm the material RMA70-12, which is used for leveling some characters.

You can also get 10 free originite prime from clearing the stages, and 10 more for doing their challenge modes, which can be used to unlock costumes for operators in the Outfit store or used to pull on the current banner. More on both of these in a bit.

Operators

We have 4 new operators, 3 new on the banner and 1 welfare from the store, with their rarities ranging from 6 to 4 star. So, with that in mind, starting with the welfare

Welfare> Bena. “puppeteer” specialist (the first operator of her type). This means that, when bena receives lethal damage, rather than withdrawing from the battlefield she is swapped with her substitute and continues fighting. The Substitute has a block count of 0. After a certain period of time, the substitute will be replaced with the real Bena again. If the Substitute dies while deployed, Bena retreats as normal. Benas first and only Talent means the substitute deals arts damage and receives 40% less physical and arts damage. Her first skill halves Bena’s max HP, increases her attack and means that she ignores a percentage of her targets defence, while her second skill increases her attack and attack speed but means she loses 4% of her HP every second. This lasts 20 seconds at base and 22 at max meaning that in a single activation will drain bena of 80% of her HP, without even considering extra damage from enemies. Bena Is a unique beast and very interesting, but not the most generally useful character

6 Star> Carnelian. “Phalanx” Caster. Again, this even is all weird off-role operators. Phalanx Ops do not attack unless their skill is active, but gain some chumby defence and arts resist in the meantime. While her skills are active, she deals arts damage to all enemies in range. Carnelian has a unique mechanic on top of this, “charged”, where she will continue to gain SP after her skill is fully charged, and once she has double the SP required to launch the skill she gains the “charged” effect. Her first talent means she recovers a percentage of her hp after activating her skills, with the charged effect doubling the amount recovered. Her second skill increases the SP she generates per second once her skill is ready, letting her reach the charged state quicker. First skill gives and attack and Defence buff, with the Charged effect being that her trait remains active during the skills duration. Her second skill reduces her attack interval and slows enemies. When charged this skill deals extra attack and the slow is changed to Bind, holding enemies in place for an amount of time, starting a 0.2 seconds and maxing at 0.6 seconds. 3rd skill expands Attack range, and causes her attack to gradually increase until the end of skill duration. When charged, the skill also means that enemies gain a stacking debuff each time they take damage, which increases the amount of damage carnelian deals to them. Carnelian, along with all Phalanx operators, is weird. Shes good, dont get me wrong, but she is a strange beast and wont easily slot into most teams. Probably not worth pulling for overall, but definitely not something to be scoffed at if you do get her

5 Star> Kirara. “Stalker” Specialist (same Subclass as Manticor and ethan). She attacks all enemies in her range, has a 50% physical and arts dodge and has a lower priority to be attacked by enemies. Skill means she self heals, with her healing being increased if there are no allies in the surrounding 8 tiles. First skill is a single shot skill that charges off dealing damage to enemies. Kirara does an additional hit of arts damage, equal to a percentage of her overall attack. Her second skill increases the potency of her talent, and lets her deal a percentage of arts damage to enemies in her range every second. Kirara is a solid pick, and fills out a unique niche alongside Manticor and Ethan. You’re probably never going to need more than one of these 3 in your team at a time, but Kirara does make a good addition.

4 Star> Indigo “mystic” caster. She deals arts damage, and when there are no targets in her range she can store her attack energy up to 3 times and fire it off in a burst once a target is available. Her Skill means that she has a percentage chance to bind a target, and that she does not attack said bound targets. This may sound weird but remember, due to her ability to store charges of damage, this means that if there is a single enemy that gets bound, Indigo’s next attack will be devastating. Her first skill changes her attack range to be straight in front of her and reduces her attack interval, with an added percentage arts damage decrease. Second skill also reduces attack interval, increases her talent activation chance, and means any bound enemies in her range receive arts damage every 0.5 seconds. Indigos main draw is being a 4 star of this style of caster, and all in all she isnt bad. I just dont care for this class.

Furniture

As with all events, a new set of furniture for your Dorms has been launched. This one is titled “Lena’s Rest”, provides a total of 500 Ambiance to a dorm for the full set, and will set you back 6,070 furniture pieces, or 32 originite prime.

Genshin Impact 2.4 is well underway, with the arrival of upcoming 5 star Arataki Itto just a week away.

As always with Genshin, eyes are well ahead, and excitement for the next 5 star, Shenhe, is ramping up.

YouTuber ZHiN Moe has shared a six minute clip showcasing Shenhe’s idle animations, Elemental Skill, and Elemental Burst. The Cryo wielder can be seen striking the air with her polearm, before dashing forward with her Spring Spirit Summoning.

While the DPS units of Genshin Impact tend to generate more hype, Shenhe has already drummed up a lot of anticipation despite her support-based kit. There’s already a Reddit community surrounding her.

Overall, Shenhe can do some cryo damage while buffing her team members, especially cryo damage. This should make her a decent support for characters like Ganyu. For those who want a more detailed look at her leaked kit, I’ve pasted the details below.

Shenhe Talents

Precise Comings and Goings: Gains 25% more rewards in Liyue Expeditions that are longer than 20 hours.

Deific Embrace: An active character within the field created by Shenhe’s Elemental Burst / Q will get a 10% Cryo DMG bonus.

Spirit Communion Seal: Shenhe will buff party members when using her Elemental Skill / E.
Press: Increases Elemental Skill and Burst DMG by 15% for 10s.
Hold: Increases Normal, Charged, Plunging Attack DMG by 15% for 15s.

If Shenhe uses her skill again when the effect is still active, it’ll reset the timers.

There have been mixed responses to the leaks of Shenhe’s kit. Many feel that this is not impressive enough for a 5 star support character, especially considering that there are better 4 star options like Bennett who can provide huge team buffs.

But, until she’s officially released, we can’t ascertain the limits to her capabilities. One thing is for sure, and that’s that her gorgeous design will already entice some players to go for her.

The hype around Genshin Impact continues to build, with new characters and updates being announced frequently, and MiHoYo are constantly dishing out new content to keep players hooked.

At the moment, the weapon types in Genshin Impact include Claymores, Swords, Bows, Polearms, and Catalysts. We have exhausted almost every combination of Element and Weapon there is, excusing Hydro Claymore, Polearm, and Cryo Catalyst. Gorou will son be filling the missing spot of geo archer. We’re still yet to see a male catalyst user, though.

All characters can only wield one type of weapon, though Childe’s skill transforms his bow attacks into melee attacks.

According to leakers, a new type of weapon is possibly in the world.

There's a new weapon type in the works, this would be a mixed close combat and ranged weapon type.

A mixed close combat and ranged weapon type could be something like a crossbow. This does, however, sound a lot like Childe’s fighting style. I do worry that crossbow users would render his skill somewhat obsolete, if these crossbow users have a skill on top of a damage conversion type mechanic.

A new weapon would certainly shake things up for endgame players who have mastered all 5 available weapon types. Currently, the strongest DPS characters in meta are Ganyu (bow), Xiao and Hu Tao (polearm), and Ayaka (sword). There’s also some strong Claymore users, including Eula and Diluc, along with a plethora of viable 4 star DPS characters too.

Back in the day, Diluc was the strongest character available, and most people felt pressured to use a claymore DPS character for breaking shields with heavy attacks. Now, there’s a larger variety of team comps and ways to get around enemy geo shields. MiHoYo have actually done a pretty good job of offering a variety of playstyles.

The next 5 star joining Genshin is Arataki Itto, a claymore user. Perhaps the playful gang leader will bring claymores back into the meta, but we won’t know until we see his damage scaling since geo is one of the lease offensive elements.

What kinds of new weapons do you think could be added to Genshin Impact? I think another heavy hitting weapon would be great, like a mace. Something close range like nunchucks or knuckledusters would be cool (and kind of funny too).

The studio behind Genshin Impact recently opened a new studio in Montreal, Canada to support the development of AAA games.

Genshin Impact is one of the most successful and profitable video games to date, reportedly earning 2 billion USD.

And with the 2.3 update headed this way, it’s only set to get bigger and bigger.

It’s no surprise, then, that all eyes are on MiHoYo’s every move. Everyone’s already buzzing about the upcoming game, Honkai: Star Rail. More excitement was stirred when it was revealed that MiHoYo were opening a studio in Montreal, Canada.

In this MiHoYo gains a foothold in one of the biggest development cities in the gaming industry, and also represents the continuation of Chinese investment in Western development spearheaded by Tencent.

MiHoYo have committed to hiring 100 new staff members for the new studio, and people have been monitoring their job postings to get an idea of what lies in the studio’s future.

One for a senior level designer describes an open world with urban areas and wilderness connected by a significant road system, with an emphasis on vehicular gameplay.

Part of the listings also state MiHoYo’s mission to “create a virtual world for one billion people by 2030.” Is that terrifying, or exciting? It seems the metaverse might have some competition, and they have the power of anime on their side.

The post MiHoYo’s next project is a paranormal open-world online game first appeared on Get2Gaming.

The 5 star was supposedly shelved after previous leaks, but new information suggests she could be arriving in Genshin Impact 2.4.

A Genshin Impact leak containing now confirmed details has given information on the character Shenhe. Shenhe’s model was previously leaked, and subsequently shelved by MiHoYo. Many players who were disappointed at the time now have new hope thanks to a recent leak.

The Reddit post from almost a month ago contains details about 2.3, which turned out to be true – lending some credibility to the claims about later updates.

The post is supposedly a screenshot of a conversation with someone who has a friend working at MiHoYo. It seems like the Leaker’s Hunt Decree isn’t particularly successful. I personally think leaks are somewhat inevitable when it comes to a game as popular as Genshin, which has a monthly update system.

Ganyu and Xiao are also some of the most highly-anticipated reruns on the horizon. It’s possible that this information could affect the sales on Arataki Itto’s banner. I’ve definitely abandoned thoughts of pulling for Itto’s weapon in favour of Ganyu. But at the same time, leaks help to generate hype.

It’ll be interesting to see what strategy MiHoYo takes here. It’s possible they’ll jump the gun and announce Shenhe, beating leakers to the punch like they did with Itto. That was a slightly different situation, however, as the two banners before Itto’s were reruns. It was a less risky move.

According to the information here, we could finally be getting a cryo catalyst user – a combination we haven’t seen yet.

It’s always exciting when that happens, as we have seen most combinations you can imagine in the game already. The only other one I can think of that we’re yet to see is a hydro polearm character. Our first Geo bow character, Gorou, is on the way alongside Itto in Genshin 2.3.

In previous leaks, it was speculated that Shenhe was the human form of Cloud Retainer. I’d be quite surprised if that was still the case, honestly. Or maybe I just personally dislike the concept.

I do have a feeling that Shenhe will have changed a lot from the original leaks, considering how long she’s been in development. And there’s no real guarantee that Shenhe will become a playable character right now. This is all prone to change.

We’ve also got new characters like Yunjin and Yae Miko supposedly on the horizon. All we can do right now is wait and see!

Fans, upset at the lack of anniversary rewards and ongoing silence from miHoYo, take to flooding the Google Play store with negative reviews

Yesterday marked the anniversary for the release of miHoYo’s hit free-to-play gacha game, Genshin Impact.
The day was… anti-climatic, to say the least. I did enjoy the anniversary ‘theatre’ web event, which gives you a rundown of your stats for the year and is complete with some adorable chibi-style art. But when all was said and done, the rewards for the day amounted to a measly few primos and one intertwined fate. It seems like we’re set to be rewarded for a year of dedication with a meagre 10 wishes.

Whales and F2P players alike are pretty ticked off by the situation, and miHoYo’s continued silence and censorship of the complaints has only served to further aggravate the player base. On the official Genshin Discord server, slowmode restrictions have been increased to combat the players spamming an emote of a rather forlorn-looking Qiqi:

Pretty much every tweet on the official Genshin twitter is being bombarded with complaints, and there has been a huge drop in the success of the Like to Dislike ratio on the latest Genshin YouTube video.

Perhaps the most surprising, and amusing, part of all this is the review-bombing on the Google Play store for the Genshin app.

The game had been maintaining a very respectable 4 star rating up until the anniversary debacle. Another game by miHoYo, Honkai Impact, has also been the target of review-bombing as a result of dissatisfaction with miHoYo, and has taken a bit of a dip in its overall ratings.

Players’ irritation only grew when miHoYo launched an expensive #hashflag marketing campaign on Twitter

If you don’t know what hashflags are, they’re a Twitter campaign that allows for a small emote to appear next to a hashtag, and we can only estimate that they cost a pretty penny.

As cute as these hashtags are (#littlewolfie for Razor?! #bennysadventureteam!!? So cute!!) they do seem to be a bit of an egregious waste of money. Many fans are questioning how miHoYo has the money to spare for this expensive campaign, but can’t spare us some primos for the anniversary.

I do understand the frustration, but I find it really hard to stay angry at this campaign when I can add little Benny emotes to my tweets now.

He’s just too adorable. MiHoYo control my one weakness, unfortunately.

In all seriousness, it’s pretty sad that after so much success and acclaim, miHoYo would mess up the anniversary so spectacularly. This probably won’t affect them in the long run, as Genshin is geared to it’s mostly casual player base. But the hardcore fans, the content creators, the people who created the buzz that let Genshin rocket to success, will always have a sour memory of the first anniversary of the game they have poured so much heart into supporting.

It’s not about the money or the primos – it’s about appreciation. The rewards didn’t even have to be primos; some new skins, a special rerun, or a free selectable 4 star would have brightened up the day a bit. Instead, I’m left with a vague sense of disappointment.
