The rumored Valve “Deckard” may be true with this patent publishing of a new headset

Valve are no stranger to the virtual reality scene, entering in 2015, partnered with HTC, releasing the SteamVR service, akin to the regular Steam. Later entering the headset market itself, with the Index in 2019, for the high end market, soon joined by Half-Life: Alyx in 2020. Another headset, known as “Deckard” has floated around as a rumor for a long while, but true evidence has finally surfaced.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) published a patent of a new headset design from Valve on the 16th June, alongside these images.

Whilst technical specifications haven’t been listed, it is likely that this headset will be less potent than the Index, if the entry level rumors and Index’s high price point is anything to go by. This will allow Valve to compete against the Oculus Quest 2 and HP Reverb and with claims that there will be 45 million active VR headsets by 2025, a cheaper system allows for a broader demographic to jump in.

Another market on Valve’s radar is the handheld gaming market. With the Nintendo Switch bridging the gap between home and handheld gaming successfully, the Steam Deck is looking to appeal to those looking for much more intense games, with an entry point of £350, good for new consumers wanting something more powerful. However, with only a 64GB embedded MultiMediaCard (eMMC) the 256GB and 512GB models (£459 and £569 respectively) to bring most of your Steam library, will be for those with multiple triple A releases.

With the PSVR2 announced, we are doubtless about to be inundated with news and leaks about games that might be coming to the system. However, one of these rumors, Coming from an industry insider, Hints that Valves “Half Life: Alyx” may be making its way to the system.

According to XboxEra co-founder and co-host Nick Baker on twitter, Sony and Valve are working on a deal to bring the critically acclaimed Half life Alyx to PSVR2. According to baker, the deal is an “open Secret”, but they also do not know when the game will be available.

For those looing for Validity in these claims, Baker has proven to be Trustworthy in the past, with him predicting Insomniac where working on another Marvel PS Exclusive (which turned out to be wolverine) and also revealing the May 2021 PSPlus game lineup before the official announcement.

As of Right now, Half Life Alyx available only for PC systems and, being a VR game, only to people ho have a headset. That having been said, PC is different to console in that no store-owner on PC has ever really relied on pushing “Exclusives” in the same way Console manufacturers have, to the point where PC isn’t really seen as a competitor to Console anymore as much as it is a new avenue

It also would not be out of the question for valve to put their first party games on systems they dont own. Their biggest franchises (Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress, Etc) have all been put on consoles at one point or another. Another reason that HL: Alyx had not made the jump to the original PSVR was the devices power and its controller. The Initial PSVR headset is fine, but maybe the PS4 would not have been able to keep up with the Intense Visuals of Half Life Alyx, and also the headset used a normal Dualshock 4 to control the games. Given that Alyx makes use of extensive Hand controls, It would have made the game incredibly difficult to work around into being on the PSVR.

As for the Half-Life series, Valve dev Robin Walker has implied the series will continue, although in what form it will take, be it Half-Life 3 or a rumored Spinoff designed specifically for the Steam Deck, is currently unclear.

You can register interest in getting a PlayStation 5 at go2games.com

PT still stings. The playable teaser for a new Silent hill game, Directed by the dream duo of Hideo Kojima and Guilermo Del Toro, was released unannounced onto the playstation store, and was an instant classic. Unfortunately this was then followed near immediately by the news that Kojima was leaving Komani after Metal gear solid 5, and that the game was canceled. Obviously Kojima would late go on to re-use a lot of the ideas he had for the Cancelled Silent Hills in death Stranding, but as of now the silent hill franchise is still in limbo.

With no way to play PT itself anymore, the game having been pulled from the PlayStation store a few years back, enterprising reddit User ROBYER1 took it upon themselves to re-create the games iconic hallway for VR. Using a free 3d modeling software called blender, ROBYER1 then ported the model to be used as a virtual home for the Oculus quest from facebook. If you have the space in your home you can even use roomscale to fully explore the environment.

P.T. Hallway from Silent Hills in Meta/Oculus Quest as a Custom VR Home! (Link in comments) from silenthill

This is just a re-creation of the area, and you cannot complete the original games puzzles or gain access to the secret trailer that was hidden at the end of the experience. However, ROBYER1 has said there are some hidden secrets arround the map for enterprising players to find if they go looking.

This map will not work natively on Occulus quest, and needs to be sideloaded onto the headset though the use of the program “sidequest”.

Its hard to think that Silent hills would not have been a huge success had it come out, given how enduringly iconic PT is to this day. As of now, konami hasnt said anything on the subject of silent hill for a while outside of the ever-present pachinko machines that make up most of Konami’s output for their classic franchises these days. There have been whispers of Komani Licensing the franchise to some third party developers to make their own take on the series, but as of right now nothing has been firmly announced.

The PSVR exclusive game is making its way to PC in the new year…

IO Interactive has announced its hit game (full pun intended) Hitman 3 will be receiving a whole bunch of updates that fans can expect to see at the start of 2022.

The biggest of these updates includes the VR version coming at the start of Hitman 3‘s second year.

Hitman 3 VR

Hitman 3 VR came out exclusively on PSVR when the game first came out at the beginning of this year. Yet the video that accompanies IO Interactive’s Year 2 announcement blog, features clips of Hitman 3 VR being played with both an Oculus Rift S and Valve Index.

The PC VR experience looks more immersive than the PSVR version as that version only supports the DualShock 4 gamepad and its limited motion controls, meaning players can’t even use the more intuitive Move controllers with it. It hasn’t been stated when PC users can expect the VR version yet, however full technical details, including the platforms that IO Interactive supporting will be revealed before Hitman 3 Year 2 starts on 20 January 2022.

Other updates IO Interactive announced include adding a series of new maps, storylines, and modes next year, along with the permanent addition of Elusive Target Arcade mode and support for ray-tracing on PC.

It was also announced that Hitman 3 has become the most successful game in the series. With over 50 million players already this year, the dramatic conclusion to the World of Assassination trilogy that started in 2016, has a score of 87 on Metacritic and is only looking upwards with its new content being released at the start of the new year.

We're excited to announce that HITMAN 3 – Year 2 starts on 20 January 2022.

Devolver Digital has built something of a name for itself in the industry for usually specializing in action-based 16-bit combat games with modern gameplay innovations. A must-play of theirs on all devices (to my knowledge) is BROFORCE (not Broforce, not Bro Force, BROFORCE): A 2D platformer-shooter hybrid wherein you get to play alone or in co-op (online or local) as various “bro”-ified versions of 80s and 90s action heroes from film and TV. And I swear, the one-liners from the bloke in “story” mode are hilarious! And while a VR would require me to sell more kidneys than I physically have to get one, Gorn is also a suitably hilarious action-filled romp from Devolver Digital. Speaking of VR, we have plenty of compatible games here at the store, including Skyrim VR for PS4 and PS5, The Persistence, Here They Lie and more.

Devlolver Digital has recently made a splash in the London Stock Exchange (LSE) according to GameIndustry.biz reports that the company has been trading on AIM (a sub-market in the LSE) after a flotation that values the company at almost… One BILLION dollars. Fieldfisher, a Europe-based advising law firm to Devolver confirmed the company received:

“A significant strategy investment from a key industry player”.

Upcoming titles with gameplay previews and trailers for Devolver include Weird West (think Disco Elysium meets Fistful of Dollars meets Lord of the Rings), Shadow Warrior 3 and Demon Throttle (AKA, “ain’t no school like the old school” The Game). A sequel to the peculiar puzzle game The Talos Principle was also announced for development.

More famous titles from Devolver include Hotline Miami (psst, you can get the Hotline collection HERE), the Takeshi’s Castle-inspired Fall Guys and most recently, the “reverse-horror” game Carrion, seeing you play as a monster based on John Carpenter’s The Thing.

CEO of Devolver Digital Douglas Morin has made the following statements:

“An IPO is the right choice for us to ensure our continued growth and support even more wonderful games”.

“Being a public company gives liquidity to our amazing team, all of whom are shareholders. It also gives us access to capital markets to continue investing in our growth strategy and talent”.

[Becoming a publicly traded company] “means Devolver Digital will be able to continue to invest into all the games we’re working on now, partner on new ones that we’ve previously not been able to consider, and add more of the fine people we love working with into our cadre of consummate video game professionals”.

Sony Interactive Entertainment said last week that its development workforce has grown by almost 20% this fiscal year

Douglas also announced closer collaborative work with developers from companies Devolver has collaborated with in the past, such as Croteam, Dodge Roll, Nerial (who made a game based on George Orwell’s Animal Farm of all things and I am Here For It) and FireFly Studios.

He also highlighted that “full creative autonomy” would continue to be encouraged amongst those working on Devolver Digital projects, which has personally made my art-boner fly high in the sky.

Netflix, one of the leading providers of entertainment services, is venturing into the world of video games. A pioneer in home entertainment and looking to continue the trend. In July 2021, they announced that video games were on the agenda and will be added at no extra charge. Now announcing a VR experience for owners of an Oculus VR headset.

Soon you’ll be scrolling aimlessly for something to watch and come across the video game section just as if you were discovering a new under the radar series.

The VR title named Eden Unearthed is influenced by the Netflix series Eden. However, there’s not too much information on the title; however, a few snippets are out there.

The world of Eden Unearthed and the parallel animated series is set a millennium after humanity went extinct on Earth. Set in a thriving city, not with life, but robots known as Eden 3.

The aim of the game is to travel around on a Tron-like motorcycle through the world, collecting necessities such as fuel and food whilst keeping momentum to the maximum, or reaping the consequences. Sounds like a Grand Theft Auto mission from GTA: Vice City (IF you know, you know).

There is a release date set for April 21st. So not long before it will be available to the masses, most likely to be released first in the US. Netflix has been trialling a gaming service in Poland since earlier this year, starting with a couple of Stranger Things games, Stranger Things 3 and Stranger Thing:1984.

A plus for now is that micro-transactions won’t be a part of this method of gaming. However, this isn’t a permanent promise though.

Great news for subscribers to the service, although splashing out for an Oculus VR headset may set you back a bit more in one hit.

The VR game that is being played in Venice’s VR competitive lineup includes a star-studded cast

It was announced back in April that The Last Worker, a VR first-person dystopian narrative adventure created by VR company Wolf & Wood and published by Wired Productions, will be played at Venice Film Festival this year as part of the festival’s competitive lineup, and now, the voice cast has finally been announced.

The VR game is set to release in 2022 and it is the only video game being played at the Venice Film Festival.

The Last Worker

The Last Worker is directed and produced by Jörg Tittel and puts the players in the body of Kurt, the last human worker in a fulfilment centre. Kurt has dedicated his life to Jüngle Corporation and hasn’t seen the outside world in 25 years, but when a group of activists ask him to help dismantle Jüngle from the inside, he faces unexpected consequences. The game mixes 2D animation with immersive 3D beautifully and is said to be inspired by the work of Judge Dredd comic artist, Mike McMahon.

The cast is lead by Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter), Olafur Darri Olafsson (True Detective), Clare-Hope Ashitey (Children of Men), and David Hewlett (The Shape of Water). Isaacs and Olafsson have previously had experience with voice acting in video games and video games adaptations like Isaacs voicing in both Castlevania: Lords of the Shadow and the respective Netflix tv show, and Olafsson lent his voice in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, yet Ashitey and Hewlett haven’t been credited as a voice in a video game previously. It is said over 200 pages of dialogue has been recorded with the cast.

The Last Worker felt entirely unlike every game I’ve played or been a part of. The characters were human and complicated and funny, the story was poignant and personal and, yes, the game-playing was addictive and fun. All round, it felt fresh, creative and original. When was the last time you had a helper bot from Liverpool?! The creator, Jorg, is a risk-taking nerd of the highest order. – Jason Isaacs, Variety.

Only the first chapter of the game is being played at Venice this week, yet Tittel says the full game is expected to have its world premiere at the Tribeca or South by Southwest film festival. The director also expressed how it is “truly beautiful the world’s longest film festival is celebrating the future of storytelling” by showing the VR game in its lineup.

The Last Worker will be released in 2022 on Oculus Quest, Steam VR, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, and PC.

Although I will obviously never have my own pet dragon, I did get to ride Elliot the dragon in VR, which is a close second.

To make this amazing short video, Walt Disney Studios teamed up with WETA Digital Air New Zealand, Tourism New Zealand and Nokia. The incredible footage shows you riding Elliot over the mountains and through the clouds, it’s pretty spectacular.

The CGI of Elliot is incredibly detailed for the short video, where you can even see his hair brushing in the wind. It’s almost like you’re really flying on him.

You can watch the YouTube video below and I recommend you watch it with a VR headset if you have one. It really adds the reality to the video.

Nintendo have come out and announced at this year’s shareholder meeting that they are undertaking research on virtual reality.

Shingeru Miyamoto said the company was “researching VR” so it has “the core technology.”

Miyamoto has also said “Long play sessions are an issue. We want to release something that can be played for long periods, carries value, and is affordable. We want parents to feel at ease.”

I am sure just like I am hoping, the fans are hoping the same that Nintendo are going to release VR capability for the new console due to be released next year. However as we all know Nintendo actually did not release anything about the console at this year’s E3, Miyamoto claimed this was to “avoid imitators”.
