Blizzard unveils the next expansion for World of Warcraft: Dragonflight, alongside announcing the long-awaited arrival of Classic: Wrath of the Lich King.

Blizzard Entertainment made two big announcements yesterday in their scheduled livestream. While they were set to unveil the future of their MMORPG, World of Warcraft, they also announced a return to the past. The fan favourite expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, which originally released back in 2008, will be coming to World of Warcraft Classic in 2022. Meanwhile the new expansion was confirmed to be Dragonflight.

Return of the King

The return of Wrath of the Lich King was expected by fans after the successful releases of Burning Crusade Classic last year, and the Classic ‘Season of Mastery’. The latter of which saw players able to join a new server with fresh characters to take on modified versions of the classic game’s challenges.

Wrath of the Lich King, by recorded subscription numbers, was the most popular of the game’s current nine iterations. Returning it to classic servers seems like a no-brainer, but Blizzard have already announced a single but important change to the game. The automatic ‘Dungeon Finder’ feature which was added to the game later on in Wrath of the Lich King’s life, won’t be appearing in the new ‘Classic’ version. Lead Producer of WoW Classic, Holly Longdale described the feature as being one that wasn’t a good fit for the Classic community. The WoW Classic experience is touted as one that returns to the more social and community focused experience of the earlier days.

As such, this may be the last expansion to hit Classic servers, as many members of the community view Wrath of the Lich King as the last expansion made to the original vision for the game. Considering it’s successes however, it doesn’t seem like Blizzard will be abandoning the project any time soon, and we could be looking at more ‘seasons of mastery’ in the future, potentially for Burning Crusade, and Wrath of the Lich King.

Soaring to new horizons

Looking to the future, the new name of the game is Dragonflight. As speculated by many fans, in the MMORPG’s ninth expansion the dragons will be taking centre stage. Set in their long abandoned former homeland, the Dragon Isles, the expansion will see explorers from the Horde and Alliance, travelling by ship to the newly revealed islands alongside their draconic allies. Lead narrative designer, Steve Danuser describes the isles as a place that has lain dormant for 10,000 years, hidden by ancient magic. But now as the elements and life begins to return to the land, the titanic watchers have re-activated the beacon, and recalled the dragons back to their home.

Described as an adventure of exploration and discovery, rather than warfare or grand cosmic stakes, your character will venture to the new lands alongside other explorers and researchers, rather than soldiers. Players will traverse rocky shores, long sprawling plains, icy mountains, and ancient ruins, all while the land comes alive around them with devastating elemental forces. During the new experience, players will be able to ride on a customizable dragon mount. This ‘dragon riding’ feature promises to update the experience of flying in the game, making it more dynamic with momentum, speed, and gravity being important factors.

But players who would rather be a dragon, than ride one, are not out of luck. The livestream also announced the new playable race, The Dracthyr. These draconic and humanoid hybrids will be able to pick either faction to play on, but have access to only one class. The Evoker. The Evoker is a new class, exclusive to the Dracthyr, which will give players the ability to make use of their draconic wings and breath weapons, along with colour based magics, to both damage enemies and heal allies.

Other changes and updates are set to come alongside the expansion as well. These include a return to the more classic style of ‘talent trees’, where players will earn points to customize their character every level. Professions will also be seeing an update. Gathering and crafting is said to have been greatly expanded, with the ability to specialize into more niche areas, and to complete work orders for other players. Additionally, updates to the UI to make the HUD more modern and customizable will be coming as well.

More to come

More news is expected to come out over the next few months, in the build up to these releases. No window for a release date was given for Dragonflight, but alpha and beta testing is expected to start later this year. Wrath of the Lich King Classic is slated for release in 2022. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for future updates. In other news, in May the studio will offer a preview of Warcraft’s first game built from the ground up for mobile, which is scheduled for release later this year.

Blizzard has confirmed additional details about its plans to reveal the next World of Warcraft expansion.

The studio said last month that it would announce a new World of Warcraft expansion during an online event on April 19, and it has now confirmed exactly when and where fans can tune in.

Players will be able to watch the reveal stream on YouTube and Twitch from 9am PT / 12pm ET / 5pm BST / 6pm CEST.

World of Warcraft has received a new expansion roughly every two years since its 2004 launch, recieving it’s 8th expansion in November 2020 in the form of Shadowlands. With the 9th set to be announced during this livestream. Though historically World of Warcraft expansions have usually been announced at the studio’s own convention Blizzcon. The event has been suspended due to the global pandemic. This makes the upcoming expansion the first to be announced to a solely online audience.

“With the story in the Shadowlands coming to a conclusion, the time is at hand to get a sneak peek at what’s next for the heroes of Azeroth,” Blizzard said on Tuesday. However, keen-eyed fans may have already unearthed some hints about what could be in store for the game.

Dragonflight Rumours

Reported by Wowhead earlier this month, the expansion’s name may be ‘Dragonflight’. Unearthed from within the code of the official website, an update has been found which is thought to have leaked the name. the website’s public source code shows strings for the Dragonflight Base, Heroic and Epic Expansion pre-purchases. Similarly, the code points to a new, though currently inaccessible URL, which would be expected for a new expansion launch: dragonflight.blizzard.com.

This theory is corroborated by a second apparent leak which occoured on the same day. The leak reveals apparent key artwork for the expansion, along with a logo containing the same Name.The key art itself features Alexstrasza, the Dragonqueen of the Red Flight, in a new outfit never seen before, with her draconic form behind her. Though an imperfect view, the art is incredibly well-made, and appears to be in the form of posters similar to those found at BlizzCon and other events.

This seems to have all but confirmed to many, the prevailing theory that a dragon themed expansion was around the corner for the long running MMORPG. At the end of last year, Blizzard offered a Dragon Pack cash shop bundle, pairing several draconic mounts and minions together in a theming tactic used in the past to hint at future releases. Furthermore at the start of the year Wowhead uncovered new encrypted content going to live servers, which included textures and particle effects for a mount, a pet, and some additional items.The mount’s file name, 9fx_drakemountemerald_buff_4219045, suggested it to be a green dragon, known by fans to be the guardians of the druidic, Emerald Dream.

This led fans to speculate that the next expansion may take place on either the Dragon Isles, or Emerald Dream. Though the latter’s corrupted side, the Emerald Nightmare served as the setting for the opening raid of the Legion expansion, neither location has ever made it into the game as a fully explorable location. This is despite initial plans to include both from the very beginning, before the game’s 2004 launch.

All together, the leaks suggest that the Dragon Isles are the more likely of the two locations to become the setting of the next expansion. This lines up with what was suggested in an interview with game director Ion Hazzikostas, who implied that the team planned to follow up the more cosmic and high-concept setting of the Shadowlands, with something more terrestial and traditional for the games fantasy setting.

The Optional Cutscene: We have fuller breakdowns on Activision Blizzard‘s legal settlement, the lawsuit and related accusations to company members, but the seriousness of the controversies are so severe that I had to scroll through EIGHT LINKS of news stories on Google just to find the company website! To summarize the key points though: The workplace fostered a “frat boy” culture of casual sexual harassment of women, especially towards people of colour. One known instance resulted in a blackmailed employee taking her own life and the company has made a point of donating to anti-union companies to prevent effected employees from combating the corruption of Activision Blizzard’s heads, whom even partook in a “Cosby Suite“. Let’s just say it wasn’t exactly an innocently unknowing homage for fans of The Cosby Show.

The Tutorial Report:

On November 16th, a Wallstreet Journal report claimed that Bobby Kotic, Activision CEO, was indeed, aware of the malpractice and misconduct allegations happening at the company. The report even went so far as to say Bobby Kotic himself mistreated female workers (and on a similar note, there was even an allegation of a death threat if Twitter discourse is to be believed… Which is to say, rarely, but when it’s right, it’s right on the money, unlike Konami).

As reported via Bloomberg article, Jim Ryan (boss at PlayStation) sent an email to employees shortly after the Wallstreet Journal report, wherein he expressed shock that Activision “has not done enough to address a deep-seated culture of discrimination and harassment”.

The report goes on to name-drop Call of Duty developer companies Treyarch and Sledgehammer Games as guilty studios partaking in the mistreatment of workers

“We outreached to Activision immediately after the article was published to express our deep concern and to ask how they plan to address the claims made in the article […] We do not believe their statements of response properly address the situation” – Jim Ryan

Considering how many fingers Activision has had in assorted pies of the gaming world before the controversy leaked, none too surprising the folks at PlayStation have a reason to condemn Activision, as the company helped in the development of many successful franchises. Said titles include Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Call of Duty, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, World of Warcraft and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. And for the admittedly slim minority of you that think this is a case of “virtue signalling” or disingenuous “woke“-point scoring, then I point you to the one-two-combo of Hbomberguy videos on Woke Branding and Virtue Signalling. Which is to say “fair enough, companies are not your friend, 99.99% of the time they do stuff because it’s profitable first” (unless you’re Konami) while at the same time also acknowledging that signalling your agreement with a certain virtue does not mean the virtue itself is a bad one… And heck, to diversify things a little, maybe try Tara Mooknee’s Virtue vs Vice Signalling. I have it on good authority that her episodes are in fact written by a cow that may appear in the next video if you like and subscribe!

Hearthstone is known for providing a new lens through which World of Warcraft fans can connect with the characters and locations that the game has explored throughout time. Hearthstone’s next card expansion pack, Fractured in Alterac Valley, is going to be set in the iconic Battleground from World of Warcraft’s original launch.

The seasonal system in Hearthstone is based on an annual release cycle. It’s based on its own set of fantasy horoscope animals. With Fractured in Alterac Valley, the Year of the Gryphon cycle enters its  final expansion phase. This means it’s the last major release of cards before a new cycle begins.

There will be 135 new cards to gather in Fractured in Alterac Valley, as well as various new features. The Mercenaries, who first appeared in the Year of the Gryphon’s Forged in the Barrens set as unique Hearthstone characters, have now attained max level and are now powerful Hero cards with powerful Battlecries and enhanced Hero Powers.

At least two new features are being implemented, including Objectives, which grant players three-turn bonuses, and Honourable Kill, a card effect that occurs if players kill an enemy minion with precise damage on their turn.

Delayed Release for Hearthstone Expansion

Due to the litigation brought against Blizzard in July, Hearthstone’s release was delayed, and the preceding phase’s Deadmines mini set was only recently released. Hearthstone, on the other hand, appears to be back on track, with a good finish in the Year of the Gryphon.

Hearthstone is preparing changes to its Battleground, Duel, Mercenaries, and Tavern Brawl modes, as well as balancing updates to its Traditional mode and cards, in addition to a new mini-set, seasonal event, and solo experiences.

The unveiling of Alterac Valley certainly brought on a flood of nostalgia for fans of World of Warcraft’s player-versus-player content.  Alterac Valley was one of the first two Battlegrounds in Vanilla World of Warcraft.

Blizzard has been having a lot of trouble recently due to on-going lawsuits, and some employees have even demanded the removal of CEO Bobby Kotick. These persistent issues they have been facing recently have led to other delays too. So it is possible that Hearthstone’s expansions may come to a stand-still.

Hearthstone’s latest expansion,  Fractured in Alterac Valley, will release on December 7th.

Since its beginnings as a successful series of strategy games in the 1990s, Warcraft has developed and evolved in a variety of ways. Warcraft has become a huge franchise inspiring several video game titles, a long-running series of books, and World of Warcraft, the most successful MMORPG ever developed.

Following the success of titles like Hearthstone, Blizzard announced earlier this year that the Warcraft series will be making fresh ventures into the realm of mobile gaming. This will take the form of two new titles in the Warcraft franchise. We are yet to hear details of what these games will be.

Warcraft has been one of the most famous PC games since its debut, producing the extremely popular World of Warcraft, which boasted tens of millions of players at the height of its popularity. Now, the series is set to enter the mobile market for the second time. A new job posting hints at how the new Warcraft mobile game may increase the franchises cast of characters.

Blizzard recently advertised a Senior Concept Artist position on the job search website, Indeed, for an unknown mobile Warcraft project. As well as other features of the game needing designs such as creatures and characters, the main thing to pick up from the job listing is that it specifically states there is potential to develop new characters. This means we could possibly be seeing some fresh faces joining the already iconic roster fans are familiar with.

The Warcraft mobile games would be the next in a long line of mobile games from Blizzard’s most successful franchises. Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, released in 2014, has become one of the company’s most successful titles, inspiring a multitude of other online collectable card games. Diablo Immortal was revealed at Blizzcon 2018 and is set to be released in 2022, whereas  there were reports of Overwatch heading to mobile at some point, earlier this year. So, Blizzard have really been making the push to expand their portfolio of games to the mobile market.

At this point in time, not much has been revealed about the two Warcraft mobile games. Other than being confirmed, the only thing we know is the two games are both in advanced stages with their production. Blizzard did however point out that they were encouraging players to check out their classic titles, so potentially these games could take some influence from there. These announcements came from CEO Bobby Kotick during a financial earnings call earlier this year.

As it stands, two Warcraft games are in development for mobile platforms, with a release date yet to be revealed.

3 more employees have left Activision Blizzard and it is suspected to be due to the harassment lawsuit Blizzard is currently facing

Activision Blizzard confirmed on Wednesday that three senior members of staff have departed from the Blizzard development teams after a report was published by Kotaku.

The three members that left were Diablo 4 game director Luis Barriga, Diablo 4 lead designer Jesse McCree, and World of Warcraft senior designer Jonathan LeCraft.

Activision Blizzard and its Harassment Lawsuit

A spokesperson addressed the matter and confirmed the report by Kotaku in an email to the development team after it had been reported to the gaming website, without mentioning the reasons for the departure.

We have a deep, talented roster of developers already in place and new leaders have been assigned where appropriate. We are confident in our ability to continue progress, deliver amazing experiences to our players, and move forward to ensure a safe, productive work environment for all.

Despite no mention of why these three men have departed, it isn’t hard to assume this has links to the State of California suing Activision Blizzard with a harassment lawsuit.

In the report, it mentioned the company had a problematic “frat-boy culture” which needed to be addressed by the company immediately. Since then, Kotaku has obtained an image from BlizzCon 2013 titled “Cosby Suite” where several current and former Blizzard employees are seen laying on the suite’s bed in front of a large portrait of Bill Crosby, who had a long list of sexual assault crimes of his own.

The photo contains two of the three men that have now departed, Jesse McCree and Jonathan LeCraft, as well as Cory Stockton, a lead game designer at Blizzard, who was also placed on leave last week but remains with the company.

The suite was set to have belonged to Alex Afrasiabi, who was featured in the image and previously fired from Blizzard after being one of the only men named in the report for his misconduct.

While this is a step in the right direction for Activision Blizzard, there’s still a long way to go to fix and make amends to the frat-boy culture that has shockingly made itself at home within the company.

An update to the ongoing lawsuit against Activision Blizzard

Current employees from all across Activision Blizzard and all of its subsidiaries have signed an open letter to the company’s management after its response to the State of California Lawsuit against them.

Employees Take Action Against Activision Blizzard

In the days that followed the lawsuit being filed against Activision Blizzard, many leaders gave their own responses to the allegations. Some, like the Blizzard president J. Allen Brack, called it “extremely troublesome” (when he is mentioned by the DFEH for not addressing those complaints that were already reported to him), while others, such as Chief Compliance Officer Frances Townsend, called the lawsuit “meritless”. This lead to a number of developers distancing themselves and speaking out against the company for how they were handling the situation.

Over 1,000 employees from Activision Blizzard took it upon themselves to draft a letter to their leadership and is continuously gathering more and more signatures from their organisations in support of holding the company accountable for its actions.

The full letter was shared with gaming website Kotaku:

To the Leaders of Activision Blizzard,

We, the undersigned, agree that the statements from Activision Blizzard, Inc. and their legal counsel regarding the DFEH lawsuit, as well as the subsequent internal statement from Frances Townsend, are abhorrent and insulting to all that we believe our company should stand for. To put it clearly and unequivocally, our values as employees are not accurately reflected in the words and actions of our leadership.

We believe these statements have damaged our ongoing quest for equality inside and outside of our industry. Categorizing the claims that have been made as “distorted, and in many cases false” creates a company atmosphere that disbelieves victims. It also casts doubt on our organizations’ ability to hold abusers accountable for their actions and foster a safe environment for victims to come forward in the future. These statements make it clear that our leadership is not putting our values first. Immediate corrections are needed from the highest level of our organization.

Our company executives have claimed that actions will be taken to protect us, but in the face of legal action — and the troubling official responses that followed — we no longer trust that our leaders will place employee safety above their own interests. To claim this is a “truly meritless and irresponsible lawsuit,” while seeing so many current and former employees speak out about their own experiences regarding harassment and abuse, is simply unacceptable.

We call for official statements that recognize the seriousness of these allegations and demonstrate compassion for victims of harassment and assault. We call on Frances Townsend to stand by her word to step down as Executive Sponsor of the ABK Employee Women’s Network as a result of the damaging nature of her statement. We call on the executive leadership team to work with us on new and meaningful efforts that ensure employees — as well as our community — have a safe place to speak out and come forward.

We stand with all our friends, teammates, and colleagues, as well as the members of our dedicated community, who have experienced mistreatment or harassment of any kind. We will not be silenced, we will not stand aside, and we will not give up until the company we love is a workplace we can all feel proud to be a part of again. We will be the change.

Many fans have threatened to boycott the company by uninstalling their games or no longer supporting their latest projects. Hopefully, there will be more of an update soon and Activision Blizzard can hold accountability for themselves.

On July 20, the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) filed a lawsuit against Activision Blizzard after a two-year investigation into discriminatory behaviour towards female employees at the company.

Within it, lists unequal treatment in regards to compensation, assignments, promotions, and terminations, and alleges that leadership has failed to take the necessary steps to prevent discrimination in the workplace.

The Claims Against Activision Blizzard

Women are said to make up 20% of the workplace at Activision Blizzard and are allegedly subjected to “frat-boy culture” from male employees. Male employees spend their time video games and delegate their work to the female staff, get drunk during office hours and “cube crawl”, moving from cubicle to cubicle, and behaving inappropriately towards women.

The lawsuit also claims that male employees will often joke about rape openly in front of female employees and the World of Warcraft team claimed male employees and supervisors would consistently hit on them and act degradingly.

Women of colour were particularly vulnerable targets. The lawsuit states that an African American woman noted it took her two years to get a permanent position at the company while male employees became permanent in a shorter space of time. She also claimed that she was being micromanaged by her supervisor when her other co-workers would be left alone, aware they were playing games instead of working. Other African American women also claimed this and would not be given time off work, only “when no one else had to do any write-up”.

The lawsuit also cites the example of a female employee who took her own life during a company trip with a male supervisor, after an intense case of sexual harassment in the workplace which included nude photos of her being spread around at a company party. Furthermore, female employees have stated they denied promotions in fear of the possibility of becoming pregnant, due to the fact women are criticised at Activision Blizzard for requiring to leave work early to pick up their children from daycare and have even been kicked out of designated lactation rooms so it could be used for meetings.

The DFEH lawsuit demands compensatory and punitive damages, unpaid wages, injunctive relief, declaratory relief, equitable relief, pre-judgment interest, and attorneys’ fees.

Since the news went public, a spokesperson at Activision Blizzard contacted Jason Schreier (Bloomberg), claiming the reports are distorted and in many cases false, yet Schreier tweeted he has heard several stories about sexism shown at Activision Blizzard over the years, showing many are not believing Activision Blizzard’s response to the lawsuit.

After last year’s misconduct reports from Ubisoft, it’s clear to see the gaming industry is far from gender equality and this story will have a massive impact on the community and hopefully, we can start making immediate changes for the better.

Final Fantasy XIV Growing Success

The first spotting of Final Fantasy XIV being sold out came from Youtuber Skill Up, who reported you couldn’t either buy a digital copy of Final Fantasy XIV Complete Edition or create new characters on NA servers, thanks to its upsurge in popularity.

Final Fantasy XIV has had such an upsurge in popularity that the game is sold out on the Square Enix storefront so you cannot buy a digital copy and you cannot create new characters on NA servers.

It is hard to believe anything can be sold out when it is digitalized, however, it could be down to the developer Square Enix needing to limit its sales due to the server congestion it has been having to deal with since April, or the sales exceeded the number of available serial numbers for the game.

It is an odd time for the MMORPG game to be receiving such growth in members when it has received the last update for its expansion Shadowbringers, and there will be no new content in store until Endwalker launches in November 2021, yet that doesn’t stop new users registering.

As of April 2021, Square Enix reported there were over 22 million registered users for Final Fantasy XIV, almost twice what its competitor, World of Warcraft, had during its peak in 2010.

And some believe it is due to WoW that has caused such a rise in Final Fantasy players.

Huge influencers in the WoW community such as Asmongold, Bellular, and PreachGaming, have been dipping themselves more and more into the Final Fantasy world along with players that weren’t impressed by the latest WoW update for Shadowlands.

Final Fantasy XIV Complete Edition is now back in stock after generating additional keys for the product, but it will be interesting to see how Final Fantasy XIV continues to grow ahead of its next update release…

This Saturday just gone, hundreds of trolls marched in World of Warcraft to raise money for the Trevor Project; a Pride event. The event was named The Running of the Trolls. Hosted on the Feathermoon-US server, trolls of all levels and classes marched for the project.

An amazing $500 was raised for the project, which supplies crisis and suicide prevention to LGBTQ+ young people. It wasn’t the goal that they were hoping for particularly, but at least they raised a fair amount for the charity. This sum is pretty commendable if you ask us!
