Your favorite Poki-Curious Poki-Man on Poki-Main is Poki-At-It-Again with some good ol’ fashioned drama. Aziz ‘Hax’ (or ‘Hax$’) Al-Yami (former competitive Super Smash Bros player) recently apologized for his actions in 2021 that resulted in his banning from tournaments and events.

So, give me a pot of your favorite boiled beverage so I can knock it off the tower of Pisa, because I’m going to spill all kinds of tea ladies and gents (and themts). And if you want in on Smash Ultimate, check our store!

What caused the banning? I’m so glad I asked… No really, I didn’t find out untill LITERALLY today, we’re in the same boat (at time of typing at least): Hax released a two-hour long video titled ‘Evidence.zip’, wherein he accused a fellow Melee rival (William’ Leffen’ Hjelte) of trying make the smash community go full-fascist on his ass. This was shortly after Leffen (possibly jokingly) claiming Hax was ‘obsessed with him’. I say ‘possibly jokingly’ because a friend of mine has often poked fun at Eddie Hall, saying how Hathor Bjornson made a joking response video about how he has a life outside of trash talking Eddie before the upcoming boxing match. That said, I’m new to Smash discourse outside of one great video by Innuendo Studios, so take this paragraph with a pinch of salt.

Despite continuing to make his own Smash Melee content, Hax hasn’t shown his face for around 5 months, until his recent 5-minute ‘Life Update‘ video.

“I’ll start by letting people know that I’m deeply apologetic about the sequence of events that led to me getting banned last summer […] I want to assure people that it took a really bad series of decisions to do what I did back there, and I don’t plan to project that type of negativity on to the community ever again”.

He then went on to say that his actions were motivated by high stress, both from ‘behind the scenes’ and other things building up over the years, that “I needed to go to either a friend, family member, or therapist instead of going to the entire public in the way that I did”.

On a related note, Ludwig (the streamer, not Beethoven) has criticized Hax for deleting his first ‘Evidence’ video and releasing a “newer version” sometime in June, more on that right here.

Here comes some good news for all you Super Smash Bros. Ultimate lovers out there! In celebration of the arrival of Metroid Dread on Switch, Nintendo released some special Metroid Dread themed spirits for a limited time back in October. Were you one of the people who missed out? Well fear not, these Spirits are now available to all players!

Who exactly does this include, I hear you ask? You’ll be able to take control of Samus, E.M.M.I and Chozo Soldier by downloading them from the Spirit Board and Store in-game. Not bad right?

This new change arrives following last month’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate update version 13.0.1, which included amiibo support for the Samus (Metroid Dread) and E.M.M.I amiibo. Using either of these amiibo will award the player with their respective spirits.

What’d you think of the update then? Will you be heading back into the world of Super Smash Bros to get your hands on these characters permanently? Meanwhile, check out our store for some awesome amiibo figures to go alongside the game!

In an interview with The Verge, Super Smash Bros creator Masahiro Sakurai claimed that if another Smash game were to be made, it would have to have a smaller roster.

“I think we’ve reached the limit, at least in terms of volume and content and fighters […] If I were to have the opportunity to work on another Super Smash Bros. game, that means we would have to shrink the roster, but we need to think about whether fans would be pleased about that” – Masahiro Sakurai.

To briefly recap some of my past covering of Sakurai and Smash news, has been considering retirement in large part due to the intense workload of his job, while also stating that there is still potential another Super Smash Bros game could be made as long as he’s leading the production.

Since then, Sakurai has admitted he would be comfortable having less creative control, as ‘I’ve been doing too much of the work myself’ and his words about not wanting to restrict the series’ longevity by focusing on “just one man’s vision” is very pleasing to hear. Also quite the coincidence I find out about this the day after my brief aside about having to (metaphorically) “kill your darlings” in my article covering The Last Of Us TV show news and Neil Druckmann’s involvement… Speaking of brief asides, here’s something for any Quentin Tarantino fans reading this!

As far as (hypothetically) shrinking the Smash Bros roster goes, I highly doubt that will be the case, as Sakurai mainly seems to cite technological limitations as the reason for keeping the roster at it’s current maximum. Considering the rise of things like Nintendo releasing the OLED Switch (psst, which we have!) and tech in general improving at a steady rate, we may well be able to make fighting games with rosters in the hundreds in a few years give-or-take.

Speaking of fighting games… Capcom, Marvel, DC, NetherRealm, JUST MAKE OUT ALREADY! The Mortal Kombat folks got into punch-ups with DC superheroes that one time. The Marvel superheros got into punch-ups with the Street Fighter cast… Well, multiple times actually- Y’all should do a four-way crossover, wouldn’t that be something.

Me wanting Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat to crossover because they both have spin-off games fighting different Superhero squads

Product Poems:

There was once an AMIIBO called Bowser, called Lucas to talk about flowers. With a hand-each from Lottie, Tom Nook’s favorite totty, they said “let’s give these buds a shower”.

Nerf or nothing, game updates in a nutshell. Hot wheels run Cold Wars.

BACK ON TOPIC: Sakurai has been back at it again with the lads at Famitsu and while he seemingly isn’t sure about a potential sequel, Sakurai has mused on the possibility of Ultimate not necessarily being the end, which is a big statement considering Sakurai is to Smash Bros what Hayao Miyazaki is to the concept of retirement! Which is to say, just because it’s their “last” project doesn’t always mean it’s their last project entirely. Speaking of which, can’t wait to see Miyazaki’s take on internet commentary in his upcoming film, fingers crossed he actually bucks the stereotype of boomers not getting the internet.

With that said, Sakurai has mentioned to Kotaku sometime ago that he was also considering retirement in part due to the fact that he hasn’t had consecutive days off work for around 10 years. So on the one hand, awesome if we get more good Smash content, but also no big deal if he decides to leave the industry because I know if I was in his position, I’d probably be a walking talking embodiment of that one Charlie Chaplin sketch where he gets so overworked that he doesn’t even realize when the hours have clocked in.

The following excerpts and summaries from Sakurai’s Famitsu column have been translated Siliconera and Video Games Chronicle, published by Ryokutya2089:

Sakurai claimed that before he confirms anything concrete, he’s still in discussions with Nintendo regarding exactly what or how a sequel could be a success, considering Smash Ultimate is already a bestseller for the company.

Another stipulation in line with every other Smash game up to now is that Sakurai would have creative control if the project ended up being another Smash Bros game, as he ‘currently doesn’t see a path’ in which a game would exist without his involvement. Even some allusions to possible drama when he mentions Nintendo’s last attempt to hand the franchise to another creator ‘didn’t go well’, so fingers crossed some juicy details drop a week from now so I can say that statement was foreshadowing all along!

I fancy myself a bit of an artiste, I know “my darling baby” syndrome when I see it, which is a shame to see so prominently in creative spaces because I wouldn’t want my take on an idea to be the only thing ever. There’s inherent good in letting different people with different ideas and takes steer the wheel of a franchise, variety is the spice of life. Not to mention games are FAR from a one-man job, you have entire company-large teams dedicated to fine-tuning things and not all of the choices made by every person on the team were dictated by Sakurai alone. Otherwise, optimistic to seeing how things progress.

Ultimate, could this game one-up Nintendo? If you grew up with Nickelodeon, it might.

Introducing Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, the multiplayer brawl game that includes 3 decades of Nickelodeon cartoons to play and fight against.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl: What We Know

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl takes all your favourite characters from classic and modern Nickelodeon cartoons and pits them against one another in the ultimate fight. Picture Nigel Thornberry taking down one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, or Danny Phantom fighting against Spongebob Squarepants. They have even opted for the retro 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle design rather than the version they produced.

The full roster of characters haven’t been released yet, but more will be announced as we get closer to the game’s release. Here’s what we have so far:

Aaahh!!! Real Monsters — Oblina

Danny Phantom — Danny Phantom

Hey Arnold! — Helga Pataki

Invader Zim — Zim

Rugrats — Reptar

SpongeBob SquarePants — SpongeBob SquarePants

SpongeBob SquarePants — Patrick Star

SpongeBob SquarePants — Sandy Cheeks’

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles — Leonardo

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles — Michaelangelo

The Loud House — Lincoln Loud

The Loud House — Lucy Loud

The Ren & Stimpy Show — Powdered Toast Man

The Wild Thornberrys — Nigel Thornberry

Fans on Twitter have also managed to find hints of characters from Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra in the game’s released footage, despite not being officially announced yet.

Korra is on the cover too pic.twitter.com/vksmCGmyJP

— iTMe (@HeyItMeBen) July 13, 2021

While it looks like the game is a copy of the Nintendo smash-hit, it has additional features that players might appreciate more. Players will be able to unlock additional moves for each character, giving it a more complex progression system.

The game’s developer, Ludosity, has confirmed it will implement rollback netcode on supported platforms, a lag-reduction technique for online multiplayer fighting games that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate lacks. This also gives us hope that there will be an online experience involved too.

What characters are you hoping to see join Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl? Personally, I cannot wait for everything to change when the fire nation attacks.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl will launch Autumn 2021 for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch.

With the addition of Tekken’s Kazuya (revealed at E3, 2021) on June 29th (later today), there is only one more spot. There is a heated debate regarding whom the last spot should go to. Many of the characters, both DLC and base game, are from titles that do not belong to Nintendo. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is an industry uniting franchise in that respect. We have seen characters from different historic franchises come together to form a special Super Smash roster.

At the heart of Super Smash, however, it is, of course, a Nintendo franchise. As it is the last DLC character, I believe this last character should be rooted in Nintendo’s rich history. Giving the slot to a random character would not feel conclusive or do the franchise justice. In a way, it would feel like watching an amazing TV series just for the ending to leave you unsatisfied. I think it’s important for the last character to have as much of an iconic history as the game itself.

As a fan base, we want a character who really resonates with us. A character who reconnects us with a series or franchise again through Smash, much like Tekken’s Kazuya will do for many players (including myself). It is an important and difficult decision for Nintendo. It is likely that they already know who the last character will be. I just hope their choice leaves us feeling fulfilled for years to come.

Who do you guys think the last spot should go to? Let us know in the comments.

As previously reported, Kazuya Mishima was revealed as the penultimate Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC character at E3, 2021.

Following his announcement, his precise release date has been shrouded in mystery.

However, as part of today’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Nintendo Direct, Nintendo has announced an official release date for the game’s latest DLC character. They have revealed that he will be joining the roster as soon as tomorrow, June 29th. With Kazuya’s introduction comes a new stage, Mishima Dojo (the iconic Tekken map). It is worth noting that this is different from your typical Smash map. Nintendo state, “the dojo is closed off in all directions, but its walls and ceiling can be broken with strong attacks, turning the stage into dangerous terrain.” Nintendo has likely tried to incorporate destructible boundaries in the same way that Tekken uses in several of its maps. I am interested to see how they have translated this into Smash Ultimate. Similarly, it will also be an Omega stage (i.e. no platforms). It seems it will require a change of tactics for Smash players.

I am curious to see how it is received by the community. All of us fans are eagerly waiting for Kazuya’s arrival, with some fans already speculating what they think his victory scene should be. Hopefully, Kazuya’s debut will be as iconic as we think it will be.

Kazuya Mishima joins the fight…

Kazuya Mishima was revealed as the penultimate DLC character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at E3 2021. His introduction means we will see one of the most iconic characters in fighting game history joining Nintendo’s industry-uniting franchise. Considering how impactful and influential Tekken has been since its first introduction to arcades in 1994, there is no doubt that Kazuya is worthy of taking that second to the last spot on the Smash roster.

The reveal trailers inclusion of the Tekken series famous Volcano scene was definitely a nice touch by Nintendo.

The reveal trailer was everything I had hoped it would be. I personally loved the end detail of Kazuya dropping Kirby off the volcano, just for him to fly back up in classic Kirby fashion.

Admittedly, although a lot of smash fans were happy with the announcement, there were some who disapproved. These fans wanted characters such as Halo’s Master Chief, for example. However, considering everything Tekken has done to figurehead the fighting game scene, it is only right that a Tekken character has a spot on the roster; and no Tekken character is more deserving than Kazuya Mishima.

With every iconic character added to the Smash roster, it is important for an equally iconic victory scene to accompany them. Although there have been some questionable ones over the years, there have also been some great ones. Masahiro Sakurai often loves to reference classic moments from the characters original games in their victory scenes. An example of this is Sephiroth’s victory scene referencing Final Fantasy 7 (see below).

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans worldwide understand this need for good victory screens, especially for DLC characters with historical importance, like the above two. The victory scene makes that hard-fought win taste even sweeter.

One fan (AngelDemon24, Reddit) has thought of what fans believe to be the perfect scene for Kazuya, in line with Sakurai’s attention to detail regarding classic references. It is based on Kazuya’s ending in the original Tekken game.

If this isn’t one of Kazuya’s victory screens, we riot. Video from Ultra. from smashbros

What are peoples thoughts? Let us know in the comments. It will be interesting to see what Sakurai does, in fact, choose as his victory scene. There are definitely several iconic Kazuya scenes to choose from. Regardless, I am more than excited to see one of the fighting game genre’s poster boys joining the Super Smash roster.

Hadouken! Nintendo have officially confirmed Street Fighter’s Ryu will be coming to Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U in the update.

With last week’s Street Fighter V trailer, we thought we would have to wait a while before being able to play with Ryu but not for Super Smash Bros. owners. For the first time in a Super Smash Bros. game a character from the Street Fighter series will be entering the arena. As well as Ryu, Roy from Fire Emblem and Lucas from Mother 3 will be released as playable characters. During this content update, there will be new Mii fighter costumes, bonus trophies, additional Wii Super Smash Bros. amiibo and new stages, including the Dreamland stage, based on the original stage Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 64.

Nintendo are giving its fans a little taster before their E3 conference tomorrow. Expect to hear more information about titles such as Mario Maker, Star Fox for Wii U and Yoshi’s Wooly World.
