Beta leakers say the new Spiral Abyss is the toughest yet.

Each update of Genshin Impact brings new characters, events, and (of course) a new challenge in the Spiral Abyss. Players have struggled with the latest Abyss, which functions as a colossal DPS check. While the rest of the game is straightforward, the Spiral Abyss is on another level. For an average endgame player like me, I’m usually able to all-clear floors 9 through 11, but floor 12 is a real challenge to all-star.

A leaker claimed that you will need some very high investment, well-built teams if you aren’t a ‘whale’ player with multiple high-constellation 5 stars. Reminder: a 5-star character with maxed out cons can run you for a few thousand.

I’m really not a fan of this – what’s the fun in paying to win? The Abyss was clearable with even all 4-star teams back in the day. But now it’s getting harder and harder, at a rate faster than the average player can improve their account.

Not only that, but the rewards are still sitting at a measly 150 primos for a 9 star clear. Really, people are only clearing it for the street cred, if you will. But honestly, what’s impressive about brute forcing a challenge with expensive DPS?

There are numerous protests in the comment section, but most agreed that the new Rifthound enemies are a huge pain and are one of the worst types of enemies miHoYo has ever added to the game. If your team composition is melee-based, it makes these enemies even more challenging. There are only two ranged weapon types in the game – Bow and Catalyst. Even fewer of these characters are strong DPS units. The constant jumping around makes it almost impossible for players to land their DPS rotation. Not only that, but the corrosion effect forces you into bringing a healer to your party, taking a valuable spot that could be used for more DPS.

The Spiral Abyss had been relatively consistent in its difficulty until Genshin 2.0 when Inazuma was introduced. Ever since then, the difficulty has been ramping up with each update. The biggest issue is that new players won’t be able to catch up and have missed the runs/reruns of many of the strongest characters for the Abyss. If you don’t have the legend of crowd control, Venti, some floors with tons of smaller enemies are near impossible. While Sucrose might be able to help you out, we haven’t seen her on a banner in a while either. If you’re stuck, you’re stuck. One tip: the anemo traveller does have some crowd control capabilities and may be worth investing in if you’re struggling with these floors.

It’s not that Genshin players don’t want more challenging game content – we absolutely do. But making existing content harder instead of creating new, harder content with more rewards to incentivise challengers is the way to go. Instead, casual and free to play players – and perhaps even mid-spenders, are slowly getting locked out of existing content.

Players will get another chance to face off with Osial.

It hasn’t been long since Genshin Impact’s huge Inazuma update, and players expected content would be slowing down for a while as the developers work on the next region, Sumeru. However, MiHoYo are coming through with plenty of smaller updates to keep everyone entertained in the meantime.

While new playable characters tend to take the spotlight in terms of hype (and we’re all looking forward to seeing Yun Jin and Shenhe appear in-game) other additions such as weekly bosses or new open world enemies can also shake up the game.

A leaker has suggested that Genshin Impact 2.4 might bring another chance to face off with Osial, the beast that we challenged in story mode (thanks a lot, Childe).

The battle with the Oceanic Defender, also known as Osial, was one of the greatest climaxes of the game so far – and definitely one of the most memorable Genshin moments for me. The monster was defeated by the Liyue squad after Tartaglia freed it from its legendary prison.

There wasn’t much information about Osial for many updates after it got crushed by Ningguang’s Jade Chamber. It seems that MiHoYo decided to bring back the beast, most likely as part of the new region, Enkanomiya.

Let’s hope this will be a fun challenge to face with friends!

Itto’s new character trailer has him performing on the stage, but someone else stole the show.

There’s just one week left until the release of the next 5 star in Genshin Impact, himbo extraordinaire, Arataki Itto. He’s one of my most anticipated 5 stars yet, and this week can’t go by fast enough.

MiHoYo released his character trailer this morning, showing him performing a play on the stage with his gang members.

However, one audience member in particular stole the spotlight. At the end of the video, Thoma can be heard saying ‘my lord, look backstage…’. There’s only one person that Thoma could be talking to here, and that’s Kamisato Ayato – brother of Kamisato Ayaka, and Yashiro Commissioner.

Ayato is supposedly close with Thoma, so much so that Thoma stayed loyal to the Yashrio Commission even after being freed from his duties by Ayato. It is also suggested that Ayato inspired Thoma so much that he received his vision.

In the video, Ayato can be heard responding to Thoma, commenting that the play is entertaining and saying it’s a ‘pity that the Tenryou Commission has arrived’. This lines up with some of the leaked storylines that claim Ayato has a bit of a cheeky streak and enjoys mischief.

Leaks also suggest he had some sort of friendship/rivalry with Itto, as the two frequently hold beetle fights (that Ayato always wins). It’s therefore quite fitting that he’d be teased in Itto’s character teaser.

Ayato’s English voice

Ayato English voice seems to have a rather silky, elegant voice with a playful lilt, quite fitting for his character. Unfortunately, if you recognise the voice – you’ll need to keep it hush-hush.

While anime fans that frequently watch dubs might recognise the voice actor based on the clip alone, laws around voice actors and NDAs mean revealing the information could cause serious issues for them.

Basically, you put them at risk of being accused of breaking their NDA. It’s stupid, I know, but that’s how things are at the moment. So if you recognise Ayato’s voice – please do try to refrain from spreading that everywhere.

Instead, I’d like to compliment the officially announced VA for Itto, Max Mittelman. He definitely brings Itto’s delinquent-esque charm in spades.

Ayato’s Japanese voice

Ayato’s Japanese voice, on the other hand, was officially credited in the Japanese trailer.

The Japanese voice has a similar elegant vibe with a playful lilt, but is higher pitched. The voice is accredited to none other than Akira Ishida. You’ve definitely heard him in something or other, most likely as as Kaworu Nagisa from Evangelion. He’s been in everything from Demon Slayer, to Persona, to Bungou Stray Dogs.

Though far more niche, I know him as Shikishima from Bad Apple Wars and Kent from Amnesia. Not only one, but TWO of my otome boyfriends. Ishida has quite the range!

While we have next to no information about Ayato, what he looks like, or when he’ll be coming to Genshin Impact, excitement is ramping up. It seems that, just like his sister, he’ll be a long awaited and anticipated 5 star.

How I nearly tripled my Albedo’s damage output using the new artefact set and F2P weapon.

It hasn’t really been all that long since I posted my first build guide for Albedo, back when his rerun was initially announced. At that time, the Harbinger of Dawn was the go to weapon, and his artefacts were a mixed bag.

Now, with the new free to play weapon, the Cinnabar Spindle, and the new defence and geo damage boosting set, Husk of Opulent Dreams, Genshin Impact has given Albedo a complete overhaul.

First, let’s look at the damage comparison between the old and new Albedo.

Three weeks ago, my Albedo’s skill would hit for around 10k – with the assistance of Zhongli and Geo Resonance.

Look at my Albedo now:

Here, he hit for a maximum of 24k off-field damage with all the same buffs. This massive damage increase is all thanks to the new Free to Play event weapon and a brand new artefact set.

The Cinnabar Spindle

The latest event took us to the wilderness of Dragonspine, where we built snowmen, ran time trials, and uncovered a strange imposter. Most importantly, though, we got this great new weapon. We were also able to refine it to level five for free from event rewards, and benefited from an EXP bonus while leveling it up.

The passive, improved base attack, and defence substat should serve to give you a 10% damage increase from the Harbinger of Dawn (provided you aren’t completely reliant on it for crit rate and crit damage).

Though some have complained that this sword only works on Albedo, it’s a free weapon at the end of the day, and it makes Albedo very F2P friendly to build. This is in fact his Best in Slot 4 star, and can even out damage some 5 star swords too. Not to mention, you’ll no longer be chained to keeping Albedo’s health over 90%.

Artefacts

The Husk of Opulent Dreams set can provide up to 4 stacks of curiosity, each buffing your defence and geo damage by 6%. That’s a considerable total of 24% defence and geo damage. It’s very easy to maintain maximum stacks with Albedo, as you will gain a stack by being off-field every 3 seconds. The only way to lose stacks is by standing on field and doing no geo damage.

If you want to maintain Albedo as more of a support role, he is one of the characters who can best utilise the Tenacity of Millelith’s 4 piece set. This increases party members attack by 20% and shield strength by 30%. As Albedo cannot benefit from the attack bonus himself (because his skill scales with defence), I personally don’t recommend sacrificing Albedo’s damage for this buff. Attack can instead be boosted by another party member with a four piece Noblesse set, if needs be.

As for the stats on the artefacts, you’re going to follow a traditional DPS build. However, you’ll be substituting attack for defence. As you’re going to get plenty of defence from the set bonus and Cinnibar Spindle, you’re definitely going to want a crit rate or crit damage circlet. This will depend on how much crit rate you manage to scourge up in your sub stats, etc. The time piece should be defence, and the goblet should have a geo damage bonus. In your sub stats you should prioritise crit rate / crit damage, but defence rolls are not unwelcome either.

If you’re sticking with the Harbinger of Dawn, prioritise defence more. You could even consider using a defence circlet or goblet.

Following are the stats on my Albedo which allow him to hit for these sorts of numbers.

This is my Albedo with max curiosity stacks from the Opulent set. Again, this will not be hard to maintain. He previously had around 1,800 defence – so 2,458 is a huge improvement.

My crit rate isn’t most ideal, but I’m able to skimp on it by pairing him with the Geo traveller, who has an ER build. The Geo traveller provides a 10% crit rate buff with their elemental burst, which is pretty easy to maintain. I will at some point probably switch Albedo to a build with more crit rate and less crit damage, but for now I’m happy to pair him with the traveller or use him in my teams that capitalise on Cryo Resonance.

With the buff from the Opulent set, Albedo is able to enjoy a 92.2% Geo damage bonus. This should be the same for you, with a level 20 goblet and max curiosity stacks, plus the geo damage boost from his ascension stat.

Team compositions

Albedo slots comfortably into most team compositions as a sub DPS. He shines the most, however, in Geo compositions. This allows him to benefit from Geo resonance, which greatly buffs Geo damage.

Albedo will work especially well with characters that do AoE damage. The limitations on his skill procs apply to individual enemies, so essentially the more enemies you can attack at once, the more his skill can activate. This makes him pretty much godly with a character like Venti, whose burst continuously hits many enemies at once. He also works very well with the Geo traveller’s burst (when it actually lines up with enemies, that is). Another great candidate is Tartaglia, whose riptides can damage multiple enemies at once. Electro-charged comps also suit him in this way.

Congratulations to everyone who managed to snag an Albedo (or Eula). If you’re still pulling for him in this last week, I’m sending you all the best luck! While my Albedo’s build is still far from perfect, I hope I’ve demonstrated his huge potential with the new set and F2P sword.

The next event in Genshin Impact has travellers rescuing a series of small animals.

The second half of Genshin Impact 2.3 will be taking us back to Inazuma for a new event. While I’ve enjoyed my time on Dragonspine, building snowmen and running time trials, I’m ready for something new!

The Bantan Sango Case Files: The Warrior Dog event will run from December 7th through to December 20th. The event will task players with helping the Bantan Sango Detective Agency in Inazuma city in order to complete their investigations into animal disappearances.

To help Bantan Sango Detective Agency complete their investigations on "mass disappearances of little animals", follow your commission, and rescue animals in designated investigation locales.

Players will need to visit specific locations and choose between completing challenges in stealth or combat mode. They will also be given a Ubiquity Net and after equipping and arriving at places of interest, players can use it to rescue the animals. You’ll later obtain a similar gadget that you can use to obtain animals for your Serenitea Pot.

Small animals will also be imprisoned within ‘Place of Interest: Den of Thieves’. Players must defeat the surrounding opponents before rescuing animals from the cages.

No doubt the event will provide usual rewards like primogems, mora, EXP books, and more.

Completing the main leg of the event will also unlock a ‘Canine Path’ challenge, though we don’t yet know how this event will work and if it’ll have co-op.

I’m looking forward to adding an army of pigeons to my tea pot!

Genshin Impact 2.4 is well underway, with the arrival of upcoming 5 star Arataki Itto just a week away.

As always with Genshin, eyes are well ahead, and excitement for the next 5 star, Shenhe, is ramping up.

YouTuber ZHiN Moe has shared a six minute clip showcasing Shenhe’s idle animations, Elemental Skill, and Elemental Burst. The Cryo wielder can be seen striking the air with her polearm, before dashing forward with her Spring Spirit Summoning.

While the DPS units of Genshin Impact tend to generate more hype, Shenhe has already drummed up a lot of anticipation despite her support-based kit. There’s already a Reddit community surrounding her.

Overall, Shenhe can do some cryo damage while buffing her team members, especially cryo damage. This should make her a decent support for characters like Ganyu. For those who want a more detailed look at her leaked kit, I’ve pasted the details below.

Shenhe Talents

Precise Comings and Goings: Gains 25% more rewards in Liyue Expeditions that are longer than 20 hours.

Deific Embrace: An active character within the field created by Shenhe’s Elemental Burst / Q will get a 10% Cryo DMG bonus.

Spirit Communion Seal: Shenhe will buff party members when using her Elemental Skill / E.
Press: Increases Elemental Skill and Burst DMG by 15% for 10s.
Hold: Increases Normal, Charged, Plunging Attack DMG by 15% for 15s.

If Shenhe uses her skill again when the effect is still active, it’ll reset the timers.

There have been mixed responses to the leaks of Shenhe’s kit. Many feel that this is not impressive enough for a 5 star support character, especially considering that there are better 4 star options like Bennett who can provide huge team buffs.

But, until she’s officially released, we can’t ascertain the limits to her capabilities. One thing is for sure, and that’s that her gorgeous design will already entice some players to go for her.

New mechanics should bring new excitement to the game, but many players aren’t enjoying getting punted into oblivion by Rifthounds.

There is a huge variety of enemies to run into in the open world of Genshin Impact, and MiHoYo are constantly adding more. Update 2.2 brought a new kind of doglike enemy called ‘rifthounds’, and along with them a new mechanic called ‘corrosion’,

Corrosion is a mechanic that drains your party’s health over time, a bit like poison effects you’ll find in many games.  The mechanic is frustrating because it completely ignores shields, which have been central to the defensive meta for a while now.

Instead, corrosion prompts you to use characters that can heal your whole party – such as Kokomi, Barbara, and Qiqi. Less so Noelle, whose healing isn’t quite as consistent unless you have her C6 and can maintain her burst. Diona and Bennett, who only heal the on-field character in the active area of their bursts, are also somewhat nerfed by this mechanic.

Some players felt frustrated, saying this was just a ploy to drive Kokomi’s sales up. I personally don’t mind MiHoYo driving healers into the meta. It might be time for me to build Qiqi again, using the new artefact set.

However, the new rifthound enemies are annoying, to say the least. They’ve taken the starring role in the new artefact domain, and they’re pretty much a pain there too. Players have been exploiting a glitch with Keqing in order to complete the domain without getting hurt and dealing with the pesky corrosion mechanic.

To do the glitch, plant Keqing’s skill outside of the domain floor and teleport immediately after starting the challenge. You’ll be safely outside of the danger zone and you can still damage the enemies through the barrier.

It’s much easier, though, to find a strong co-op team and grind the domain with them. This is partially due to how corrosion works. Corrosion will drain the health of your WHOLE party, including those who aren’t on the field. By having four active characters from different players in co-op, one person getting hit won’t mean the whole team starts getting hit with corrosion.

Not only that, but you can get by fine with a healer like Diona or Bennett, since everyone is on the field.

However, you can’t count on co-op for the Spiral Abyss, where the rifthounds are causing more chaos. The Spiral Abyss is the hardest part of the game, and players have been complaining that it’s only getting harder. One popular Reddit post shares statistics demonstrating just how much the Spiral Abyss difficulty has increased.

While it’s great that MiHoYo are offering tougher endgame content for veteran players and whales, the Spiral Abyss is becoming less and less friendly to average players. I think that they should add more floors with better primogem rewards for this difficulty spike. Not only that, but it seems their idea of making it harder is just introducing tankier enemies, like rifthounds with a million health and triple Maguu Kenki madness.

If you plan on 36-starring the new abyss, you better get good at I-framing.

Either that, or tailor your team builds to perfection for the new enemy rota. Healers and Geo characters are going to be shining in this new abyss.

One last tip for those pesky rifthounds: they have lower resistance to the element that matches their own. So electro in the new artefact domain, or Geo in the abyss. You’re welcome.

The newly announced 5 star bears a lot of similarities to an existing 4 star.

It’s been a little over a week since MiHoYo announced that Shenhe is the next character to join Genshin Impact’s parade of 5 stars. While everyone is questioning what her kit will be like, her damage and support capabilities, there’s one thing on my mind…

Are Shenhe and Chongyun related?

Typically, Genshin Impact interactions are more focused on building relationships between the player and the characters. The traveller is meant to be a special person to every character (ya know, so you feel more inclined to dump the contents of your wallet for them). However, a few characters have close and frequent interactions or are somewhat branded as a duo. A few 4-star pairings that come to mind are Chongyun and Xingqiu and Razor and Bennett. Most of these interactions take place in limited events, such as the Windblume festival.

(I feel awful for you if you missed this adorableness.)

We’re seeing more and more interactions between 5 stars and 4 stars now, though. Again, these usually take place in events. It’s great to see, though, as I often felt that the game lacked this aspect. While it feels nice that every single playable character in Genshin Impact is obsessed with me, I would rather see them interacting with one another. Interactions between characters can bring the world to life, taking it from some environment that only exists for players to explore to a living, breathing world.

At the moment, we’re seeing a lot of interactions between Eula and Amber in the new event – and it’s super cute. Amber took a role in Eula’s story quest too. There’s also the adorable friendship between Xinyan and Childe that was shown in the 2.2 update’s Labyrinth Warrior event.

I love it! I want more!! And perhaps MiHoYo is picking up on that because some voice lines and lore surrounding Shenhe are leading me to believe that she may be related to Chongyun…

First of all, there’s her lore.

If you know anything about Chongyun, you know he comes from a family of exorcists and is constantly lamenting his pure yang energy that drives spirits away.

So it’s possible he may be related to Shenhe in some way. Considering that she was taken in by Cloud Retainer, I’d guess that they were cousins or some more distant relations. If Shenhe has returned to Liyue, it would be feasible that she’d re-establish ties with a younger relative like Chongyun.

That’s all just circumstantial, though – right? Here’s what really makes me think Shenhe has some kind of friendly relationship with Chongyun:

This voice line of Xingqiu’s talks about how Shenhe looks at him ‘fiercely’. The last line is the part that really interests me: ‘Or maybe… upset someone close to her?’

If you don’t know, Xingqiu and Chongyun have a pretty cute dynamic – while they’re good friends, Xingqiu is prone to teasing Chongyun and sending him on non-existent exorcist missions. Though Xingqiu always fixes any mess Chongyun lands in, Chongyun laments Xingqiu’s teasing and suggests forming a ‘victims of Xingqiu alliance’.

Yes, one of the ways Xingqiu likes to torment Chongyun is by feeding him spicy food that upsets his delicate yin/yang balance. Currently, Chongyun seems to be the sole ‘victim of Xingqiu’, so it seems to me that he would be the most obvious answer for the person that Shenhe is ‘close to’ that Xingqiu might have upset.

Xingqiu may have upset someone who has ties to Shenhe, like Ganyu or Cloud Retainer (or maybe it’s something to do with the Guhua clan – who knows?), but I feel like the evidence is pointing to Chongyun right now.

Twitter was quick to jump on the idea, and lots of fan art featuring Shenhe and Chongyun and jokes about Shenhe defending Chongyun from Xingqiu are circulating.

I do hope that the Shenhe/Chongyun siblingship comes into the game in 2.4. I loved the surprising sibling-like duo of Xinyan and Childe; these sorts of interactions are really cute and make characters feel more natural.

Though some fans were not too pleased with how the Chinese nickname was just translated to ‘brother’, I feel like it works fine as a quirk of Xinyan’s.

I’m trying to keep in mind that the Shenhe/Chongyun theory could prove false, but it’s too cute to let go of! I really hope to see it in Genshin Impact 2.4.

The names of new elemental reactions have been uncovered in game data.

Genshin Impact is filled with a variety of characters wielding different weapons and elements. Currently, the game contains characters wielding one of six elements: Anemo, Geo, Pyro, Hydro, Cryo, Electro.

The combination of elements can result in various elemental reactions with different effects. Hydro and Pyro creates vaporise, and Cryo and Pyro creates melt, which multiply damage. Geo causes crystallise with any element excluding Anemo, which swirls with any element excluding Geo. Then there’s freeze, electro-charged, overload, and superconduct.

These reactions might sound complicated, but Genshin Impact players actually get a handle on them very quickly. In fact, I’d venture to say that players might be a little tired of the current selection of reactions – particularly as there isn’t a whole lot of use for electro-charged or overload, and crystallise is notoriously unpopular.

Dendro has existed in the game since launch, though it isn’t wielded by any characters yet. Dendro slimes can be found in open world, as well as Sawachurls who apply Dendro status to other enemies. Currently there is only one interaction with Dendro elements: Pyro causes burning.

Players have always expected that MiHoYo would eventually add Dendro to the game, as it corresponds to the nation of Sumeru. Furthermore, the character Baizhu wields a Dendro vision – though he isn’t playable, and we have yet to see him use it.

However, game files with reaction names that seem to relate to Dendro have been discovered in the 2.4 Genshin Impact beta version.

This suggests that Dendro could be on the way sooner than we imagined. The Dendro nation, Sumeru, is the Traveller’s next stop after Inazuma. However, given the time it takes to develop a whole new region in Genshin, players assumed we wouldn’t be heading their for a while. The 2.4 update does in fact seem to be taking us back to Liyue, but perhaps the Dendro element will arrive before the nation itself.

Still, if files relating to Dendro are in the game now, it’s possibly well into development. What elements would cause Overgrow and Overdose, do you think?

The hype around Genshin Impact continues to build, with new characters and updates being announced frequently, and MiHoYo are constantly dishing out new content to keep players hooked.

At the moment, the weapon types in Genshin Impact include Claymores, Swords, Bows, Polearms, and Catalysts. We have exhausted almost every combination of Element and Weapon there is, excusing Hydro Claymore, Polearm, and Cryo Catalyst. Gorou will son be filling the missing spot of geo archer. We’re still yet to see a male catalyst user, though.

All characters can only wield one type of weapon, though Childe’s skill transforms his bow attacks into melee attacks.

According to leakers, a new type of weapon is possibly in the world.

A mixed close combat and ranged weapon type could be something like a crossbow. This does, however, sound a lot like Childe’s fighting style. I do worry that crossbow users would render his skill somewhat obsolete, if these crossbow users have a skill on top of a damage conversion type mechanic.

A new weapon would certainly shake things up for endgame players who have mastered all 5 available weapon types. Currently, the strongest DPS characters in meta are Ganyu (bow), Xiao and Hu Tao (polearm), and Ayaka (sword). There’s also some strong Claymore users, including Eula and Diluc, along with a plethora of viable 4 star DPS characters too.

Back in the day, Diluc was the strongest character available, and most people felt pressured to use a claymore DPS character for breaking shields with heavy attacks. Now, there’s a larger variety of team comps and ways to get around enemy geo shields. MiHoYo have actually done a pretty good job of offering a variety of playstyles.

The next 5 star joining Genshin is Arataki Itto, a claymore user. Perhaps the playful gang leader will bring claymores back into the meta, but we won’t know until we see his damage scaling since geo is one of the lease offensive elements.

What kinds of new weapons do you think could be added to Genshin Impact? I think another heavy hitting weapon would be great, like a mace. Something close range like nunchucks or knuckledusters would be cool (and kind of funny too).
