The all-new classic Sonic compilation comes out June 23, 2022

A few days ago, we had some speculation that we would soon be hearing more about the upcoming compilation of classic sonic the hedgehog titles. Our prediction that news and a release date would be coming soon, turned out to be true. Sega announced through a new trailer, their website, and on their official accounts, that the game would be coming on June 23rd. In addition to the release date, more interesting details have been confirmed for the collection.

The Developers

As previously announced, the versions of; Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles, in the collection have been re-made from the ground up to support widescreen. As speculated by fans, all four games are running on the Retro / Star Engine, the same one used for Sonic Mania. Origin’s versions of Sonic 1, 2 and CD will be the same as the fan-favourite mobile versions of those games, now on console and PC. In addition, Sonic 3 and Knuckles has been remade for the first time in the Star Engine. The work for this remake was done by Co-Lead Developer for Sonic Mania and the Sonic 1, and 2 remakes, Stealth, along with the rest of the team at his company, Headcannon.

Both fans and the developers seem excited by the prospect of the entire original trilogy, and CD, all at last being available in widescreen, with the best performance and additional features. Whilst the remaking of Sonic 3 & Knuckles has been handled externally by Headcannon, the compilation itself is being built internally at Sega. And there appear to be a number of surprise extra features to be found.

Extra Features

The collection boasts both classic modes, and ‘anniversary’ modes of each of the games in the collection, allowing players to choose whether they play the updated versions, or original emulations of the games. Whilst playing in anniversary mode, lives will become a thing of the past, and are to be replaced by ‘coins’. These special coins are said to unlock extra features outside of the main games in the bonus menus. Extras such as concept art, videos, missions that have you tackling certain challenges within the game, and even a mirror-mode where you can play the games flipped.

There is also said to be a ‘story mode’ where players will be sent through the four games in chronological order. From sonic 1, to CD, to 2, and then to 3 and Knuckles (seemingly ending debates over which came first between CD and 2). All new animated cutscenes will punctuate the start and end of each game as well. These animations have been written by the franchises longest running comics writer, and writer for the upcoming Sonic Frontiers game, Ian Flynn. Meanwhile, animation for the cutscenes have been handled by Tyson Hesse and his team. Hesse being one of the individuals responsible for the popular Sonic Mania Adventures shorts released onto Youtube, as well as the far more well received re-design for the Movie Sonic, after the studio scrapped the original nightmare.

Screenshots from the game show that the backgrounds to its menus are charming 3D recreations of the islands upon which the classic games take place. All the extra additions to the presentation of the games, seem to be going a long way to making Sonic Origins more than just a simple collection.

Coming June 23rd

Pre-orders for the compilation have gone live, to mixed reception from the fans. A strange collection of minor cosmetic features have been seemingly withheld from the base game release, only available to those who pre-order or who purchase the Digital Deluxe version. This information was presented to fans through a bafflingly clunky chart to top it off.

Despite this, the collection is still set to be the definitive way to play Sonic the Hedgehog’s most celebrated titles, and will provide an easy entry point for new fans who have come from the movies.

Sonic Origins comes out on June 23rd. In the meantime, the franchise’s last remaster Sonic Colours Ultimate came out last year, and its brand-new open world adventure, Sonic Frontiers is set for release later in 2022.

Updates on the new compilation of classic Sonic the Hedgehog games could be coming soon

The run down

The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is set to have quite a busy year in 2022. Following the impressive opening weekend for it’s live action theatrical film sequel, two more video game projects and a new TV series are still on the horizon. Back in May of 2021, Sega hosted an online ‘Sonic Central’ event, announcing and teasing many upcoming products. Among the revelations was the now released, Sonic Colours Ultimate, and teased a next-gen Sonic game, which would later become known as Sonic Frontiers, after last year’s game awards.

However, also unveiled was the Sonic Origins compilation. A collection of 5 iconic classic sonic games from the Sega Mega Drive (or Genesis), including: Sonic the Hedgehog 1, Sonic the hedgehog 2, Sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles, and Sonic CD. Not much has been heard about this upcoming collection since the initial announcement, leading some fans to speculate about what could be going on behind the scenes. Alas, it looks like the waiting may be coming to an end shortly, after some curious leaks.  As reported by VGC, the Game Rating and Administration Committee of South Korea has granted the PC version of Sonic Origins an All Ages rating.

Mere days later, what seems like Key Art for the game was leaked to twitter after having been allegedly uploaded onto Playstation Network’s CDN servers. In the art, fans can see the main trio of heroes, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, with Metal Sonic, Amy, and Eggman behind them. The logo for Sonic Origins is shown on the left side of the image, next to the characters.

All this new information at once can only suggest that an announcement may be coming sooner rather than later. But aside from a release date, what more is there to learn?

Further details

Though details are still scarce, a few pieces of interesting information on the compilation have been shared. As confirmed by the head of Sonic Team, and the brand’s social media manager, all five games will be remade from the ground up to be presented in widescreen, and will not be simple emulation jobs. This opens the door for additional content and features, or extended options being made available for these classic games. This will also mark the first time that Sonic 3 and Knuckles has ever been officially playable in widescreen.

Due to the footage used in the initial trailer, some fans speculated the games could be running in the ‘Retro’ (now ‘Star’) Engine, created by the lead developer of critically acclaimed Sonic Mania, Christian Whitehead. Whitehead led the development of the mobile ports for Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic CD, which were rebuilt from the ground up in his engine. These ports received praise from the fanbase due to their higher resolution, smooth performance, and additional features. However, only the port of Sonic CD ever made it to consoles, leaving the fan-favourite versions of the first two games, confined to mobile.

The long wait to play these classics on modern consoles in widescreen definition may be soon coming to an end. But, whether or not they will boast the same modern features, or even additional features to the ones enjoyed by mobile gamers, remains to be seen. Christian Whitehead, and many other Sonic Mania alumni, appear to be hard at work on the first project for their new studio, Evening Star.

Now that the Sonic 2 Movie has released, we should expect to hear more news on Sonic Origins, Sonic Frontiers and Sonic Prime, in the near future.

Knuckles, the Ugandan Feminist Professional Epic-Theme haver of the Sonic franchise has been confirmed for an upcoming TV series starring Idris Elba, who will be playing the character in the upcoming sequel to Sonic The Hedgehog (2020).

I’m not even going to pretend to be unbiased for this piece, I fawned over the Sonic Heroes character sections of the game manual and fan-boyed for Knuckles because he was Martial-Artist and I was always on a Bruce Lee or Jean Claude Van-Damme film bender every other week!

The series will be dropping around 2023 exclusively on Paramount+, alongside a Star Trek series, a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film and even another cinematic crack at the world of Dungeons and Dragons… Okay, really? DnD? Don’t get me wrong, I love me some roleplaying, but the whole appeal is that you and your mates get to take part in your own story running on the most powerful graphics processor in the world: Your Imagination! Isn’t that right Michael?

You Already Had Second Movie – “I know, but what about third movie”? Haruki Satomi (SEGA CEO) expressed his delight at the news of a third Sonic the Hedgehog film already being announced for development, so I imagine he and the folks at Paramount are pretty confident in the success for the sequel. Fingers crossed this doesn’t turn into a ‘Dark Universe’ debacle where everyone makes promises they can’t keep and purely rely on the test of time to conveniently hope everyone forgets while being too busy drooling over the next Marvel film!

A Socio-Historical Explanation of Knuckles In Meme Culture:

First off is the relatively pedestrian stuff: Knuckles is a sometimes-friend, sometimes-enemy and mostly-frenemy to Sonic the Hedgehog across much of the series.

Cut to some nebulous time in 2016 when YouTuber VirtuallyVain roleplayed as an African drug lord in a Call of Duty letsplay video, the breakout mock phrase from that video being “follow me, I know the way”

Not long after that, YouTuber Gregzilla released a sonic game review that featured an… Artistically peculiar-looking version of Knuckles lovingly dubbed “Fuckles”.

A popular pastime for Call of Duty players in the early days of the internet was to smush in sound clips of African soldiers and battle cries, something VirtuallyVain was playing off at the time. Then comes the game VR Chat, a DeviantArt artist by tidiestflyer made a 3D model of ‘Fuckles’ for the game and ey presto- Now you’ve got a jokey funtime trolling community that consists of a sea of ‘Fuckles’ madly ad-libing about “the way”, based on VirtuallyVain’s own pastiche and 2000s Ugandan action B-movies like Who Killed Captain Alex.

As is the case with most things on the internet, the original meaning of “the way” naturally expanded to mean literally anything the user desires it too! The original context was “follow me, I know the way” to win in a shooty bang-bang game, or in the case of Captain Alex, “he knows the way… of using a gun”. Nowadays, “the way” or “the wae” is a sort of hilariously abstract generalized idea of an ideal mindset, goal or purpose.

I’d do a deep-dive into the Ugandan Knuckles “Kwin”/”Queen” joke, but that’d require me to get even more NSFW than I have been lately, a brother can’t live on flippant sex jokes immature asides alone!

Sonic fans are certainly in for a few treats and surprises at the Game Awards 2021

The movie poster for the upcoming sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has been released by SEGA and Paramount.

Not only that, but the poster was specifically dropped so fans could get hyped ahead of the Game Awards 2021 as it was also announced the trailer will be premiered at the award show.

The movie poster for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 features Sonic and Tails onboard an aeroplane, being pursued the sky by Dr. Robotnik. There are no signs of Knuckles, but it has been confirmed the echidna will be making his debut in this next movie, voiced by none other than Idris Elba.

The Sonic the Hedgehog 2 trailer will be shown at the Game Awards, along with the actors Jim Carrey and Ben Schwartz (Dr. Robotnik and voice of Sonic), who will appear during the Game Awards to promote the film.

Geoff Keighley, the award show’s host and owner, recently gave hints that Sonic fans were in for a treat for another big gaming reveal, so it’s possible there will be a double whammy of news to look forward to.

Geoff Keighley replied to a tweet claiming that there will be a number of big announcements during the Game Awards 2021, and Keighley’s response confirmed that statement. He then was asked if he was a Sonic the Hedgehog fan, to which Keighley replied with “very much so” and the eyes emoji, something usually used to draw attention or deliberately act suspicious regarding something.

The official Twitter account for Sonic the Hedgehog then responded by asking for tickets for the award show, playing along with Keighley. People are guessing this announcement will be for Sonic Frontiers.

As The Game Awards draw closer, game announcements are being teased for the award show

It’s now only two days until The Game Awards 2021 takes place from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and everyone is on edge waiting to see what world premieres and announcements the show has for us in store.

Well, it looks like we already have one teaser for what to expect, thanks to interactions on Twitter from the award show’s host and creator, Geoff Keighley, and it’s none other than everybody’s favourite hedgehog.

Sonic the Hedgehog Announcement

It all started when Geoff Keighley replied to a tweet claiming that there will be a number of big announcements during the Game Awards 2021, and Keighley’s response confirmed that statement. He then was asked if he was a Sonic the Hedgehog fan, to which Keighley replied with “very much so” and the eyes emoji, something usually used to draw attention or deliberately act suspicious regarding something.

After a few hours had passed, the official Twitter account for Sonic the Hedgehog tweeted the Game Awards’ creator asking if he had spare tickets for the event of Thursday.

This was followed by a very funny reply and quote retweet from Keighley and got fans excited even more at the prospect of a Sonic announcement at the Game Awards 2021.

This would make sense the blue hedgehog has more announcements coming as it’s already been one hell of a year for the 30-year-old franchise. There’s also the discovery of a new domain that has been registered on the official Sonic the Hedgehog website, with the URL frontiers.sonicthehedgehog.com.

The site is unavailable to the public as it presents users with a 403 Forbidden message, but we can expect this to be revealed sometime soon as the 403 message suggests the URL is being used for something.

Sonic Frontiers is believed to be the name of the upcoming open-world Sonic the Hedgehog game that was first teased in May, during a Sonic Central presentation, and is expected to be headed to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch and PC.

We can expect quite a few announcements at the Game Awards this year, as it was also teased there will be another big announcement that has been in the works for over 2 years.

New monsters, costumes, and an expanded ending are coming to Monster Hunter Rise

Capcom has announced the superb Monster Hunter Rise will include all post-launch content so far released for the Switch version when it makes its way to Steam on 12th January.

Since its release on Switch back in March, Capcom has released a steady flow of post-launch content for Monster Hunter Rise. From big things such as new creatures and a proper conclusion to the Kamura Village story arc – to fun smaller additions, including a series of ‘collaborations’ based on various video game properties.

In a new post shared on Steam, Capcom has confirmed that Monster Hunter Rise will include all content featured in the Switch edition up to its most recent Ver.3.6.1 update when it arrives in January, and notes all future post-launch content releases will be synched between the two versions starting at the end of February. Unfortunately, cross-platform play and cross-saves will not be supported.

This news means PC players will be able to tackle Teostra, Chameleos, Kushala Daora, Crimson Glow Valstrax, Apex Diablos, Apex Rathalos, and Apex Zinogre alongside all the base game monsters on launch day.

Additional content includes an ability to have access to the core quest line’s new ending. plus six crossover costumes (and associated quests) based Monster Hunter Stories 2, Okami, Street Fighter, Mega Man 11, Ghosts ‘n Goblins Resurrection, and Sonic the Hedgehog. In addition, Monster Hunter Rise will be getting a “massive” paid expansion, titled Sunbreak.

This is due to arrive on Switch and Steam next summer.

The EDM artist and DJ is hosting a Sonic-themed concert at the end of the month to honour its anniversary

From Kirby music to Sonic music…

Sonic has already had a spectacular year so far. For its 30th anniversary, everybody’s favourite blue hedgehog received a Minecraft DLC, a LEGO set, confirmation of a new Netflix show, Sonic Colors: Ultimate and more recently, became the first non-Capcom IP to receive a DLC in Monster Hunter Rise.

Yet it’s still not enough to celebrate the impact Sonic has had in the gaming industry, and EDM artist and DJ Steve Aoki will be honouring Sonic in a virtual concert dedicated to the SEGA franchise.

Sonic-themed Concert

Steve Aoki will be hosting a 60-minute set on November 30 at 8 PM GMT as another celebration to honour Sonic’s birthday. The virtual concert will be streamed live on the official Sonic the Hedgehog YouTube and Twitch channels for fans to tune in from around the world.

The setlist will consist of Steve Aoki’s original songs, as well as fan-favourite classics from Sonic’s 16-bit era to the present day and will take place in a virtual environment featuring various landscapes from Sonic games including the Green Hill Zone and Chemical Plant Zone.

The crossover event we’ve been waiting for has finally been revealed…

Earlier this year it was announced Monster Hunter Rise would be getting an unlikely crossover with Sonic the Hedgehog in November and Capcom has finally released details regarding the event.

The Sonic DLC event is the first Monster Hunter Rise collaboration to feature non-Capcom IP as Sonic is owned by SEGA.

Monster Hunter Rise x Sonic

The Sonic event will be a free update that launches on November 26 and features two new Special Event quests as well as the opportunity for players to earn Sonic unlockables.

These Sonic unlockables include Sonic-themed clothing for your character as well as a Tails outfit for the player’s Palamute. It also includes a Sonic costume for the player’s Palico, which lets them perform Sonic’s spin attack.

The trailer for the Monster Hunter Rise x Sonic the Hedgehog shows Sonic and Tails “rolling at the speed of sound” as they collect gold rings and interact in the Monster Hunter environment.

This has been a great year for Sonic the Hedgehog so far. The blue hedgehog has been celebrating its 30th anniversary and received a Minecraft birthday treat, its own LEGO set, and confirmation of a Netflix 24 episode animated show titled Sonic Prime. 

Monster Hunter Rise has also been doing well, as the RPG has received collaborations from other Capcom titles such as Street Fighter, Okami, Mega Man and Ghosts ‘n Goblins. 

The Sonic DLC will be out on November 26th on Nintendo Switch and will be available from day 1 when the game is released on PC on January 12th, 2022.

Gear up for what is expected to be one heck of a crossover…

Capcom has reminded its fans that a certain hedgehog is coming to town in one of its many IPs.

Earlier this year it was announced Monster Hunter Rise would be teaming up with Sonic the Hedgehog for a crossover to drop in November. Here’s what we know so far.

Monster Hunter Rise x Sonic

This is not the first time Sonic has ventured into the Monster Hunter world. Sonic made his debut in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate where players were able to craft Sonic-themed gear and outfits for their Palico, along with other characters like the Super Mario Brothers in the April DLC.

Yet this is the first time Monster Hunter Rise is featuring a collaboration from a non-Capcom IP address since Sonic is owned by SEGA. So far this year, Monster Hunter Rise has seen collaborations with Street Fighter, Okami, Mega Man and Ghosts ‘n Goblins. 

There’s still very little that has been revealed since September’s announcement regarding what we can expect from the Monster Hunter Rise and Sonic the Hedgehog collaboration, but so far, Sonic has had a great year celebrating its 30th anniversary. It has already received a Minecraft birthday treat, its own LEGO set, and confirmation of a Netflix 24 episode animated show titled Sonic Prime. 

However, Capcom made sure fans didn’t forget what is going to drop sometime in the next 30 days, with their tweet on the Japanese Twitter account for Monster Hunter Rise.

Our very own Idris Elba is set to voice everyone’s favourite fictional (and possibly real) echidna…

The Suicide Squad actor will be taking off his supervillain gloves and replacing them with a pair of iconic white gloves for his next role.

Idris Elba has announced on his social media platforms that his next role will be to join the upcoming sequel to the adaption of SEGA’s hit series, Sonic the Hedgehog.

On Tuesday, the Luther star published an image of Knuckles trademark gloves across his social media pages along with the eery message “Knock, knock….” and the hashtags #Knuckles and #SonicMovie2.

It was announced earlier this year that after the surprising success of Sonic the Hedgehog that we would be getting a sequel, set to be released on April 8 2022.

Fans also received a photo showing Knuckles with Sonic and Tails, the iconic trio, from the set of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 back in April this year.

The first movie was set in Green Hills, Montana, and saw Sonic teaming up with James Marsden’s character Tom Wachowski as he tries to escape the US Department of Defense aided by Jim Carrey’s character Doctor Robotnik. The end of the movie teased fans with a glimpse of Tails coming to Earth in search of Sonic, yet it wasn’t announced whether there would be a sequel at the time.

It has yet to be confirmed who will be voicing Tails alongside Ben Schwartz (Sonic’s voice actor) and Idris Elba.

Some fans believe they have uncovered what we can expect in the upcoming sequel with a leaked analysis, with Knuckles teaming up with Doctor Robotnik in search for an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilizations, yet this has not been classified.

For now, we can try to guess what kind of accent Idris will use for everyone’s favourite echidna.
