There are a number of recent and upcoming games, films and tv shows that use various cultures and mythologies to drive their stories. This series aims to explore the relationship between an IP and its surrounding mythology and how this shapes its characters. Today, we look at the tv show Moon Knight, exploring the character design of Khonshu and his links to Egyptian Mythology.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Moon Knight. 

Moon Knight

Moon Knight is Disney+‘s latest TV show set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Oscar Isaac stars as Steven-‘with a v’-Grant, a museum gift-shop employee, who has blackouts and a sleeping disorder. Steven learns he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with Marc Spector, a mercenary. Steven is suddenly thrust into a world of violent Egyptian mythology when it turns out Marc Spector is the chosen avatar of Khonshu, the Egyptian god of the moon. Under the guise of Moon Knight, Steven and Marc must work together if they are to overcome the evil forces that seek destruction of the world.

But who exactly is Khonshu?

In the TV show, Khonshu is a mysterious figure that seems to haunt both Steven’s mind and city rooftops. A violent god who uses his avatar to kill people – the god seems to be a mix of a petulant child throwing temper tantrums and a narcissist, claiming to be “true justice”. This unpleasant mix is also seen in the comics, with Khonshu manipulating Marc Spector to do his bidding and bring “vengeance” on those he deems deserving. The similarities between the comics and the TV show also extends into the character design of Khonshu. The god is presented as a looming figure, wrapped in bandages with a large bird’s skull for a head. But who exactly is this god?

Khonshu is based on the Egyptian god Khonsu. Khonsu was the god of the moon, but also associated with fertility and healing. It’s thought the name Khonsu comes from the Egyptian word, khenes, meaning to wander or travel. Khonsu, as the personification of the moon, would travel across the sky and was changeable in his nature – waxing and waning throughout the year.

Seen as the sole source of light during the night, Khonsu was seen as a protector against evil – battling the darkness, while Ra descended into the underworld to do battle there. Closely related with the darkness, therefore, Khonsu was also seen as a violent and vengeful god – and it’s here we see the links with the comic book Khonshu. In fact, Khonsu is mentioned in both the Pyramid Texts and Coffin Texts – Ancient Egyptian sources – as a force of vengeance. The Pyramid Texts state “he is the envoy who is sent to punish” and this is clearly echoed in Moon Knight, where Khonshu declares “I only punish those who deserve it, I am true justice.”

On a side note, it is also interesting how the concept of Khonsu changed over time. This is the only mention of Khonsu in the Pyramid Texts, suggesting he wasn’t that prevalent in early Egyptian mythology. This might explain why in the TV show, Khonshu seems to be sidelined by the major deities of the Egyptian pantheon. However, in the later Coffin texts, Khonsu is mentioned far more often, suggesting he had grown in importance. And by the time of the New Kingdom, when his temple was built at Karnak, he was described as “the greatest god of the great gods.” An epithet that was also used in Vol 188 of the Moon Knight comics.

The Iconography of Khonsu and Khonshu

The Egyptian god Khonsu was either depicted in mummiform or wearing a bird head. In the TV show and comics, we see Khonshu’s design takes both these elements. The mummified aspect in Egyptian iconography was probably used to point towards the eternal aspect of the god. But it also perhaps points to his protection of the wandering souls, seen in the Coffin Texts. In the comics and TV show, it serves to connect Khonshu with Ancient Egypt and also adds a disturbing element to the character. The flowing robes of the character also makes it feel ghostly – as well as a priestly image.

The TV and comics also make use of the bird head depiction. However, whilst in Ancient Egypt Khonsu was presented with a hawk or falcon head, Khonshu seems to have a raven or crow head. The falcon or hawk in Ancient Egypt was a symbol of power and sight – king of the sky overlooking his domain. However, the character design of Khonshu once again focuses on death imagery, with ravens and crows being carrion and scavengers of corpses. In addition, the use of a skull creates this unsettling image and the long, overreaching beak creates a more threatening feel than that of a hawk or falcon.

With this in mind, it is clear the character design seems to pull as much from Grim Reaper iconography as it does Egyptian mythology. With his flowing bandages, hollow skull and crescent moon-adorned staff, the character seems designed to evoke the image of Death – which can only be bad news for Steven ‘with a v’.

Nintendo has announced it will be holding an online indie game showcase TODAY at Noon Eastern Time (that’s 5pm for us limeys)!

The stream should run for around 20 minutes (based on past similar showcases) and it’s expected to cover new indie games or which currently-existing indie games will be coming to Nintendo Switch. There’s been some rumblings in the Twitterverse that Hollow Knight: Silksong may have a spot in the showcase, as us Hollow Knight fans have been starved for content for over a couple years. Fingers crossed the lads at Team Cherry have something put together for it. And while I’m gushing, I highly recommend giving the Hollow Knight Voidheart Edition a go! Tis a masterclass in worldbuilding and deceptively skill-based gameplay. How to watch Nintendo’s Indie Gaming Showcase… Explained in Insults: Okay boomer, I know it probably took you 30 minutes just to get to this page, so feel free to get a pen and paper at the ready because chances are the alzheimers is kicking in early and my vain ass wants you to finish this whole article top to bottom. GOOD? Good! Let’s break this down.

Nintendo will be streaming the event there, so here’s what you do: Click on THIS link to the Nintendo YouTube channel. You can watch the stream when it starts, but if you’re a big boi tech-wizard with a YouTube account, you can even click the little grey bell to notify you when the livestream is about to start. You’ll want to get there a few minutes early though, because YouTube has this strange fetish for playing adverts right before most re-entries into livestreams and I don’t want you clicking off this showcase because you thought it was Febreze commercial!

At this point, it has dawned to me I am writing this section for a type of niche that is simultaneously tech-illiterate enough to need regular explanations of how to work a phone while also being juuuust tech-savvy enough to enjoy video games on modern consoles. Okay, egg on my face, you got me Kronk!

The post Watching Nintendo’s Indie Game Showcase (Insult Explanation) first appeared on Get2Gaming.

The Star Wars Universe is full of interesting characters to explore. From the main stayers of the series like Luke Skywalker, to the side characters like Boss Nass, every person has a unique story to share. Each of which are crafted with the same love and passion we’ve come to expect in the franchises forty year history.

Moreover, sometimes small appearances can merge into unbelievable fan favourites. For example, Boba Fett had minimal screen time in Empire Strikes Back, yet has now become one of the most beloved characters to fans across the world. So much so, he’s set to receive his own show next month- The Book of Boba Fett. Apparently, it’s set to explore the ‘power vacuum’ left behind by the death of Jabba The Hutt, and we just cannot wait to see how it unfolds.

Similarly, Anakin’s padiwan Ahsoka had an equally good fan reception after making her debut in The Clone Wars series. Since then, she’s grown from a secondary to a primary character, with appearances in Star Wars Rebels, The Mandalorian and  her own upcoming show soon. Unfortunately though, her long-rumoured arrival in 2017 video game Star Wars Battlefront II never came to fruition.  This then begged the question- was this just fans wishful thinking or was she actually supposed to be DLC?

Well, it looks like we finally have our answer! It seems that former game director of Star Wars Battlefront II has now confirmed that Ahsoka was supposed to be part of a character DLC for the game. How disappointing.

Why Was Ahsoka Cut From Star Wars Battlefront II DLC?

Now this is the question on every ones lips. How could they do this to us? Firstly, lets take a look at what the exact plans were. Dennis Branvall, the above-mentioned director, commented on DLC hero plans on a recent Reddit thread. Unfortunately, that thread has now been deleted so we can’t show you the evidence, but just trust us on this.

Apparently, he discussed all the future content that was abandoned for Star Wars Battlefront II. This included the addition of the fiery planet of Mustafar as part of the Clone Wars DLC. Moreover, we were set to see both Ahsoka Tano and Villain Asajj Ventress as DLC characters. How cool would that of been?

Ultimately though, we’re just as confused as you when it comes to why it was cancelled. The game has seen a wonderful revival since its initial release due to some fantastic DLC, so we struggle to understand why they would end it right there. Adversely, it is quite normal for a video game to have certain content which doesn’t quite reach the hands of us players. Both Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption have seen story mode DLC’s scrapped in their lifespans. Clearly, EA lacked the time and resources to deliver what would’ve been some amazing content. What a pity.

Disney Creating Another Golden Age Of Gaming?

Despite the cancelled release, Disney do seem to be getting a lot of things right nowadays with their Star Wars Games. Much like Star Wars Battlefront II, they’re somehow redeeming themselves after a rocky start which saw critics and fans questions whether they’re the right people at the helm.

Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order was an unquestionable success, with a sequel supposedly on its way. Additionally, the upcoming Ubisoft open world game and a remastered KOTOR show that the force is looking strong for the franchsies future. As such, we really cannot wait to see what Disney plan to do next. Therefore, make sure to come back here for news once we have it!

The post Ahsoka DLC Cut From Star Wars Battlefront II first appeared on Get2Gaming.

Disney has given the licensing to its characters to Apple for an upcoming Super Smash Bros-inspired action game featuring various characters from Disney’s filmography. Disney Melee Mania will be developed by Mighty Bear Games.

The game will be exclusive to Apple Arcade, which you can get for £4.99 a month to gain access to various free Apple Arcade titles. Disney Melee is set for a December release.

As shown above, the game will also feature Pixar characters, basically letting you play Death Battle. Would Frozone beat Elsa in a fight? Or would Elsa use her Deus Ex Machina powers from the closing seconds of Frozen 1 to just make him a new super suit and call it a draw? Would Toy Story Buzz be able to fight the Buzz from the upcoming Lightyear movie? WILL BING-BONG’S TAUNT INCLUDE THE CHAMPAGNE ELEPHANTS FROM DUMBO? Only one way to find out!

The gameplay will be primarily MOBA-based, or Multiplayer Online Battle Arena to you and me. Some games that fit the MOBA bill include Overwatch, Smite and League of Legends. Disney Melee Mania will focus on 3-on-3 combat which is described in a recent press release by Apple as:

‘Each champion will appear in a distinct action-ready design equipped with their own set of iconic moves and unlockable cosmetics. Throughout five-minute matches bursting with battle arena action, players will need to score the most points possible — or defeat the opposing team as many times as they can — for a chance at victory’.

Boba Fett will soon be playable to Boba T-bag on fools in Fortnite!

Epic Games has announced the Star Wars bounty hunter will appear on December 24th at 7PM ET, the weekend before The Book of Boba Fett comes to Disney+ (December 29th). Furthermore, Disney+ recently released a documentary on the character ‘Under the Helmet: The Legacy of Boba Fett’.

While a skin for Fennec Shand (played by Ming Na Wen, who’s breakout role was as the titular 1998 Mulan) hasn’t been confirmed yet, Epic have confirmed that she will play a role in Boba Fett’s additions to Fortnite.

Disney also released some trailers and previews for it’s future projects on Disney+ Day for the Obi-Wan Kenobi TV show and Baymax! In fact, while I have you here-

Marvel Shows Announced on Disney+ Day:

X-Men ’97. It’s no ’69, but I’ll take what I can get! This show will be a continuation of the original X-Men animated series from 1992-97. Coming to a certain Disney-centric streaming platform near you in 2023.

Moon Knight. Oscar Isaac will play the titular knight of moon, which will reportedly debut next year.

She Hulk. When it comes to crossing the Venn diagram between fans of legal procedural dramas, superhero action and folks who are into the beloved pastime of watermelon thigh-crushing, I’m sure this will be a hit! Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black, The Other Half) will play the titular She Hulk and it is set for a 2022 release.

Ms Marvel.  Kamala Khan has been receiving plenty of love in comic world despite mixed opinions on the Marvel’s Avengers game she debuted in. Even then, I’ve heard her part of the story was well written, but otherwise, you know you messed up when you’re less highly rated than the LEGO Avengers version (which we happen to have!). Set to release in 2022.

Call Of Duty Vanguard might see the introduction of two iconic movie characters, according to industry insider Tom Henderson. Who could these mysterious entries be, we hear you ask? Well none other than Captain Steve Rogers (AKA Captain America) as well as WW2’s favourite archaeologist Indiana Jones. You can’t get much bigger than these two.

Henderson tweeted today that Activision and Disney have been in talks about a “potential partnership opportunity” which will see our favourite characters make crossovers into the iconic shooter franchise. Additionally, he went on to send out a string of code from CoDPersues. For those unfamiliar with the name, they regularly post Call of Duty leaks which have more often than not correct. It seems that there will be an in-game event which will introduce the Marvel and Lucasfilm heroes, which we just cannot wait for.

Both Captain America and Indiana Jones seem to be making their way to #Vanguard in the near future.

Both Captain America and Indiana Jones would certainly match the timeline of WW2 which means no anachronisms will be found. In their respective universes,  adventurer Jones fought the Nazis throughout the 1930’s and Captain America is a World War II Veteran. Hopefully we will see the WW2 version of Cap like in his 2011 film, which will fit the mood and aesthetic of Vanguard. Similarly, we’d love to see Indiana Jones just as the way he’s always been portrayed- as an absolute legend. Whipping Nazis and throwing Vibranium shields at Nazi’s is something we can really get behind.

However, these two announcements really got us thinking. Who exactly is the all-time best character to appear in the Call Of Duty Franchise? Here’s our list of our favourite Call of Duty characters! It was hard work but we’ve managed to nail it down to five. Check them out below:

5.-Viktor Reznov

Games: World at War, Black Ops, Black Ops II

Arguably the most selfless character on the list, Viktor was always there when people needed him most. His bonds with Dimitri Petrenko and Alex Mason make up much of the first two games in the Black Ops story, and his personality shines throughout. He was a key figure in establishing the connection between WAW and the Black Ops games, and we wouldn’t of changed that for anything.

4.-Gaz

Game: Modern Warfare

Lieutenant Gaz. What a man. Despite appearing in just two games, Gaz has remained a popular member of the SAS forces within the games. Luckily for us, we see a much more detailed and emotional character in Modern Warfare 2019 which makes him vastly more three dimensional. This adds a lot of empathy to his story which is why when he becomes a playable character we’re able to relate with him just that bit more.

3.-Ghost

Game: Modern Warfare 2

He gives us the most heartbreaking death in the franchise. Not much else needs to be said. R.I.P to such an iconic character. Man, we hate Shepherd.

2.-Captain Price

Games: Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3, Modern Warfare 2019

If you looked up leader in the dictionary, a picture of this man with his iconic cigar would appear.  We’d follow Captain Price into any battle. A stalwart throughout the Modern Warfare franchise, he always adds witty comments to make our playing experience that much better and has some of the most iconic lines in the franchise. Harsh but brave, there really was no-one better to be fighting under.

1.- Captain “Soap” Mactavish

Games: Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3

Captain MacTavish. Soap. Whatever you prefer to call him, he is arguably one of the greatest video game characters of all time. His trilogy of games stand the test of time as being some of the best FPS shooters ever to exist. Not much more needs to be said for this man, except the mention of his name has got everyone buzzing for the Modern Warfare 2019 sequel.

Disney announced that special Kingdom Hearts suites will appear at the Disneyland Ambassador Hotel in the Tokyo Disneyland Resort. The suites will be available for use from January 6 to April 27, 2022 and reservation opportunities will open November 29th of 2021. The suite life of this crossover will consist largely of decor based on the Kingdom Hearts series, itself a video game franchise combining the universes of Final Fantasy and Disney’s assorted animated filmography. Speaking of which-

Is this the real life? Or Final Fantasy? Gone on for 14+ installments, no escape from finality. Have a butcher’s round our store if you want to give the Final Fantasy VIII Remaster a shot.

Guests will also be given stylised room keys based on the series’ keyblades (pictured above), which many a HEMA (Historical European Martial-Arts) YouTuber has analysed the real-world implications of much better than I could.

The starting price for the Kingdom Hearts suites at the Tokyo Disneyland location begin at 77,500 yen, or $684 according to Famitsu. That’s around £511 for us limeys!

Other fun little tidbits guests can expect from the experience include:

• A Treasure Chest including a “secret” item.
• 2 original themed postcards and paper bags.
• The opportunity to purchase a Kingdom Hearts themed shoulder bag.
• Themed dishes being sold for a limited time based on Kingdom Hearts items!

The menu for said items and more can be located right here, but good luck trying because unless you know Japanese, then Google Translate will be your best friend!

There’s also plans to sell special Wayfinder necklaces pictured below. There are precisely 3 available for pre-order, the Ventus, Aqua and Terra versions.

The RPG is making its way to Disneyland Tokyo via its Hotel Suites!

Kingdom Hearts is approaching its 20th anniversary soon and what better way to celebrate than for the RPG series to receive its own special Kingdom Hearts suits in the Ambassador Hotel at Disneyland Tokyo Resort.

Kingdom Hearts has already had a great run-up to its 20th anniversary thanks to Sora finally joining Super Smash Ultimate and the games being confirmed to being available to Switch, and now fans get to experience staying in a suite inspired by Kingdom Hearts!

Kingdom Hearts Suites

The suites will be available from January 6 to April 27 2022 and will feature unique decorations inspired by the Kingdom Hearts series, including a special room key for each suite to be modelled on various keyblades throughout the franchise. There will also be a treasure chest provided in each room that will contain a secret item within each one.

Fans of the Kingdom Hearts series that get the chance to stay in one of the specially designed suites will also be given two original postcards and Kingdom Hearts-inspired paper bags, as well as the opportunity to purchase exclusive merch such as a shoulder bag worth 5,500 yen. There will also be a special Kingdom Hearts inspired food menu featuring a special cake set and a drink with paopu fruits atop to go with the suite that will also be available for a limited time.

So, what’s the price?

Well, to stay in one of these iconic suites, you will need to pay 77,500 yen, or £505, per night for the starting price of one of these suites.

Disney has never been a company to be afraid to put a hefty price on what it offers its guests and these Kingdom Hearts suites are no exception.

The Force is strong with Disney Star Wars games at the moment. In the last few years we’ve had Jedi Fallen Order, Star Wars Squadrons and Star Wars Battlefront II. In the upcoming years we can expect to see new LEGO games, KOTOR remaster and much much more.

However, there once was a gaming period before Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012. Whilst that may feel like a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, the games back then are still revered by many fans to this day. One such example of this is Star Wars: The Old Republic, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. We know, we can’t believe it either.

The successful MMORPG followed up upon the similarly successful Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic games. It added to both the mythos and gameplay elements by allowing you a wider variety of character creation. Choosing from a Jedi, Bounty Hunter or Sith and taking on this large-scale Star Wars adventure was an experience people would never forget.

In order to celebrate this special occasion, BioWare has released a new 4K remaster of one Star Wars: The Old Republic‘s original trailers. Before we go into anymore detail, have a quick look at what you think about it below:

Originally released on June 1 2009, Blur Studios trailer has gone down as a classic in the Star Wars community. It features the extremely popular yet non-canon Sith Lord, Darth Malgus, and his assault on the Jedi Temple. Coruscant has never looked this stunning outside of the prequels.

The then beautiful clashing of dark and light provided glimpses of Star Wars spectacle which at the time had not been seen in years. This is exactly why the trailers have become so iconic to many members of the Star Wars fan base. ‘Deceived’ undoubtedly holds up to this day but with these graphical enhancements it really couldn’t look any better.

Not only this, but Bioware have made plans to continue re-releasing the rest of The Old Republic’s trailers in 4K. It appears that Blur Studios other trailer, ‘Hope’, will be part of these plans. We certainly can’t wait to see that one either, and look forward to giving Blur Studio great credit once more. Since the Old Republic trailers, they’ve worked on many other titles such as the  remastered cutscenes of Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo Wars 2 and Titanfall. An impressive portfolio indeed.

There has been an awakening in recent years for Star Wars games. After a slow start, Disney are now starting to realise the importance video games have on the franchise as a whole. As a result, fans are starting to become excited at the prospect of the vast new adventures they’ll be able to go on.

Along with a further five games in development, the teasing of a new Star Wars video game announcement for December will have everyone excited.  At this time, not much is known about the announcement except it is part of the ‘Bring Home The Bounty’ line of product reveals.

It should be noted that Disney are yet to reveal any official information about the release. Nevertheless, that shouldn’t stop fans from becoming intrigued and theorising about the title.

‘Bring Home The Bounty’: Star Wars Hype Begins

‘Bring Home The Bounty’ is Star Wars’ newest merchandise push which started this week. Every Tuesday throughout the remainder of the year, Disney will reveal their new Star Wars products. This is supposedly in anticipation for the release of the upcoming Disney+ show: Book of Boba. Everyone’s jumping aboard the hype train for that one.

The website provides a roadmap for every week with icons related to a specific product. The week of December 14 has us the most intrigued, with the icon being a game controller. Clearly, this must be related to another gaming venture for Disney. With Quantic Dream striking a deal with Lucasarts, perhaps this will be our first look at what they’re offering.

As previously mentioned, this announcement really could involve anything. In my opinion, that’s the beauty of Star Wars. There’s an endless list of tales and adventures which can be translated into a great gaming experience.

According to the article, “Expect reveals of new items inspired by everything from The Book of Boba Fett, (…) and The Mandalorian to classics like the Skywalker saga films, animated series including Star Wars: The Bad Batch and Star Wars: Visions, and much more.”

Moreover, it seems this could also be related to the upcoming 50th Anniversary of LucasFilm. Paul Southern (Senior Vice President at Lucasfilm) had this to add:

“We wanted to find a way to celebrate all of our beloved characters and stories from the classic to the new and everything in-between.”

Fifty years of LucasFilm has unquestionably given us so much Star Wars content to be happy with. But you can never have too much, can you?
