Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: A Neon coloured miracle.

When you bring up the word Cyberpunk or Edgerunners in conversation in today’s day and age, you’re bound to conjure several images in people’s minds. Most would think of pictures of chromed-up bikers with monoband sunglasses and neon flooded streets. Those old enough to remember the original role-playing game will probably smile at fond memories of a rich world and characters. But say Cyberpunk to a gamer, and they would probably scowl, remembering the hype train around Cyberpunk 2077 derailing into a bug-filled crash on launch.

That is, until now. September saw the release of the anime “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” on Netflix to critical acclaim from the anime community; Studio Trigger’s short ten-episode foray into the streets of Night City has served as a metaphorical adrenaline shot for what many saw as a slowly fading fandom. Without going into spoiler territory, the anime follows the path of David Martinez, a young Night City resident with a particular talent for enduring augmentation at a far higher threshold than most are capable of before being sent on an adventure within the setting.

That setting is perhaps the single most universally agreed upon masterstroke of CD Projekt Red’s 2020 RPG, a strong base that required time to correct that most would not give it. But correct and develop, they did, slowly but surely bringing 2077 up to the standard that lived up to the hype garnered during its fraught development cycle, even if by that point, most players had left the game for greener pastures. However, Edgerunners has changed that, using a combination of Studio Trigger’s expert writing and animation within the established world of 2077 to catch the attention of an audience on Netflix and, after showing them just how rich of a world Night City presents, sets them loose to play the game again.

With the addition of the Edgerunners update (patch 1.6), all augmentations, weapons and playstyles shown off by the characters in the anime can be emulated to perfection in-game, meaning that new and returning players alike can burn the city like their new favourite cyberpunks. And not only is it possible to rule the night as David or Rebecca, but it’s also optimal.

The Statistics

When you pair that with a deeply emotional and fast-paced show with high-quality acting from the likes of Giancarlo Esposito, it shows the audience what is possible within the setting and game, inspiring a colossal upswing in player count.

As shown in the above image, in August of 2022, the average player count for Cyberpunk 2077 was approximately 10,000 with a peak of 18,700, but with the release of Edgerunners, the average player count has more than doubled with the peak playerbase at a staggering 86,000 on Steam alone (Source: Steam Charts). As the show grows bigger, quickly becoming a classic, the word of mouth of Cyberpunk disseminated amongst well-known gaming personalities, bowling over those like the auteur Hideo Kojima by the show’s quality which bleeds over into the game itself:

What does this mean for Cyberpunk 2077 and its future? The playerbase is quickly returning or discovering the world is much better than when they left it and having much more fun with the game than was possible. With more updates like the Edgerunner update on the horizon, there is the incentive and proof that not only is 2077 worth sinking time into and will keep expanding in the coming months and years. It’s safe to say that Cyberpunk Edgerunners is a beacon of showing just how much story and setting content and quality the game can provide, dragging 2077 back from the edge of obscurity and into the neon-drenched light of a cult classic.

Quite the coincidence this pops up not long after my Metal Gear Solid 3 villain post! Hideo Kojima, Professional Strange-Name-Maker and Kojima Productions leader recently announced the company offices will be moving to another venue.

In nostalgic celebration, he shared a couple pictures of the now-emptied old offices with the following caption:

Today is the day we say goodbye to the entrance, the Ludens hallway, and the kitchen that have been our home for a little over five years. Many memories come to mind. Farewell

What’s the new location of Kojima Productions? I’m relatively agnostic on that, but I’m looking forward to seeing what’s in development from Kojima in the future.

Speaking of future works, the company has been confirmed to be working on not only multiple games, but also an anime production: The amount of content likely stemming from Kojima Productions’ recent rise in positions filled at the company.

On a briefly unrelated note: Every time I close my eyes, I can imagine a world where Metal Gear Solid is inexplicably a Danganronpa style visual novel!

Like, I take joy in explaining the craziest moments from MGS out of context the same way JoJo fans (a moniker I’m also unfortunate enough to identify with) try selling folks on the show by saying “bruh, a Victorian Britbonger wrestles a bisexual disembodied vampire head with magical sunshine karate, we gotta see this”.

Unlike my last Dying Light 2 blog, my decision to write on this, plot twist, ISN’T just because we happen to have Dying Light 2 pre-order copies available (not that I’m stopping you from getting them, wink wink, nudge nudge).

There’s been some mild (by Twitter standards at least) backlash to Dying Light 2 following a recent claim the game will be some 500 hours in length! More on that here. The folks at Techland recently came out with a statement that essentially boils down to “calm your tits, we’re not trying to outdo Persona 5 here! What we MEANT was that 100% completion of the whole game will take about 500 hours, the story campaign (excluding multiple runs for different endings) will be about 20 hours. Will that be enough to please Her Majesty’s Secret Service”?… I’m paraphrasing of course, the day a company says “calm your tits” about literally anything is the day I uncritical my race theory!

Fun fact: According to the official Dying Light 2 Twitter, 500 hours would be the approximate time it’d take to walk from Warsaw to Madrid.

More specifically, the Dying Light 2 team have given the following approximations:

• 20 hours to complete the main story.
• 80 hours to finish the story AND all side quests.
• 500 hours to “max out” the game with all “choices and endings, checking every place on the map, every dialogue and finding every collectible”.

So, why DID I choose to talk about this? Well, sit down and strap on, it’s story time! There’s this one small-time not-too-well-known indie gaming bloke you might have heard about? By the name of… checks notes. Hide E.O Couchiema? Kyjama? Kojesus? Ko- Okay, I’ll stop! Long story short, Metal Gear Solid games. Solid franchise, varying degrees of storytelling quality, always hilariously over-the-top even at the worst of times… Then Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes happened, where on launch, folks essentially paid 40 quid for what amounted to one 15-30 minute level, presumably because Konami felt like giving some cheeky foreshadowing of how they’d rather sabotage their own business than carry on making video games (though with that attitude, probably for the best they’re sticking to making Pachinko machines).

That mildly-quirky recap of the situation’s my way of saying “well hey, better too much than too little, oi oi”.

Hideo Kojima, of Kojima Productions and mind behind the Metal Gear Solid games and Death Stranding has recently posted an image on Twitter teasing an upcoming project! Fans have speculated that the man in the black and grey shirt may be Norman Reedus, suspiciously without his Amazing Fetus, though there’s currently no official confirmation on that part. Based on Kojima’s phrasing in the image caption, the project appears to be nearing the end of early stages of development and is just going through a couple smaller changes to see how they fit.

Geoff Keighley, Game Awards organizer and friend of Kojima commented the eyes emoji under the post. For any potential boomers or Facebook Ranty Bois reading, no, this isn’t an Illuminati Confirmed bit, but is actually a common way of expressing excitement and/or curiosity towards something. Given their friendship, it is plausible Kojima way appear at the upcoming Game Awards on December 9.

Considering Kojima Productions announcing it’s new division for TV, Film and Music, the teaser image may well be for a TV show or film. Heck, considering the Ed Sheeran crossover with Pokemon GO, maybe we’ll get a Death Stranding music video starring Ariana Grande! Or a Metal Gear parody Album performed by Brian David Gilbert!

While no confirmation has been fully set in stone, Microsoft and Kojima have signed a letter for plans to work on a new game, suggesting the possibility the next game directed by Kojima could well be an Xbox exclusive. And for more on my thoughts about exclusivity on games, I point you towards this handy-dandy article quoting me quoting Ben “Yahtzee” Crowshaw’s opinion on the concept.

The Game Awards will feature discussions on 40-50 games, 10 announcements for new ones and probably a partridge in a pear tree if we’re lucky. Deathloop (psst, which we have!) is currently leading with 9 nominations including a potential GOTY (Game of The Year) placement. Speaking of loops, Jacob Geller’s recent video essay examining Time Loop Nihilism is “BASED and Groundhog-pilled” as they say… In this case, the “they” invariably denoting far-right meme-lords, far-left meme-lords and possibly a couple future McDonald’s adverts that use young-person lingo without researching what it means! The Japanese development studio is venturing into the world of other mediums

Kojima Productions, the Japanese video game development studio that was founded by the Metal Gear series creator Hideo Kojima, has announced it is opening up a brand new division today.

The studio behind Death Stranding has launched a new division based in Los Angeles that will be dedicated to film, TV, and music.

The new division is designed to take the studio’s current and future games to other pop culture mediums. The new team will be led by former PlayStation business executive Riley Russell.

 

The team has as its charter, the goal of expanding the reach and awareness of the properties now under development at Kojima Productions, and to make them even more a part of our popular culture… We are truly excited and looking forward to working with the very best entertainment talent we can, across all of the entertainment industries. – Riley Russell

 

Kojima Productions’ business development manager Yoshiko Fukuda also added that finding “new ways to entertain, engage, and offer value to our fans is essential in a fast-moving, ever-changing storytelling world”. He also stated the new division will take the studio into creative narratives beyond video games and allow fans to communicate and immerse themselves in these new spaces.

Video Game adaptations have gotten more popular over the years with the likes of Castlevania, Uncharted, The Witcher, Sonic the Hedgehog, and even the recently announced Final Fantasy XI animated series being announced, so it’s understandable why the studio has made this move.

Hideo Kojima has collaborated with French designer Jean-François Rey to bring these innovative pairs of glasses

Death Stranding has done incredibly well since the initial release and is continuing its success thanks to its recent next-gen upgrade onto the PS5.

The action game directed by Hideo Kojima and developed by Kojima Productions is also rumoured to have a sequel in negiations, yet for now, the game, or rather the director Kojima-san, has joined forces with French designer Jean-François Rey to bring a collection of designer glasses that are inspired by the bestseller.

Jean-François Rey specialises in glasses that aren’t traditional designs, which is perfect for a game like Death Stranding. There are 3 designs of glasses up for pre-order that will be delivered by March 2022. There isn’t a price listed on the official website, just a phone number and email address to contact if you are interested- so expect these glasses to be very expensive and most likely to be out of the regular gamer’s price range.

The first design has a pair of round lenses and a second pair of shaded lenses attached to the temples which can be opened out to cover the regular lenses and tucked back again. They come in three styles; black, chess, and army.

The second design is a more rounded, steampunk-style design with detachable shaded lenses that also come in three different styles; black, blue, and army camouflage.

The last pair of glasses actually come with their own limited edition collector’s pack. The pair of glasses are a 3D nylon, metal and acetate hybrid model sold in a unique black colour, with an intricate detail along the edge of the frames, and come with their own LUDENS mask, based on Kojima Production’s own mascot character.

Even though these are going to be unattainable to most regular gamers, you have to admit they are finished with immaculate detailing and stand out against any other pair of glasses.

Happy days for players of Death Stranding who have upgraded to PS5 as come 24th September, the Director’s Cut is finally dropping and is enhanced for the PS5’s capabilities. However, unlike most upgrades, the jump will only cost an extra £5.

The game was already big enough as it was, but if it left you wanting more, then you’re in luck as it’s

“packed with a ton of new content and enhanced gameplay features.”” As well as these improvements, there’s also, “”more weapons, equipment and vehicles, a variety of new modes, missions and areas to explore, expanded storylines, and enhancements to the UI”

sounds like that £5 is paying for a lot of extra material!

The upgrades to the game include using the PS5’s haptic feedback in the DualSense controller whilst adding use to the adaptive trigger resistance that many FPS games are utilising now. In addition, the 3D audio capability of the PS5 comes into effect within Death Stranding Directors Cut, although a compatible headset will have to be paired. There are also two picture modes to choose from, performance mode, experiencing as Norman Reedus in 4K and up to 60FPS, alternatively opt for fidelity mode, viewed in native 4K.
Come Friday, 24th September, all you’ll have to do Is load up Death Stranding, then pay £5 to upgrade to the director’s cut to enjoy all Hideo Kojima’s brilliant mind has put into the new version of the game.
