Blizzard unveils the next expansion for World of Warcraft: Dragonflight, alongside announcing the long-awaited arrival of Classic: Wrath of the Lich King.

Blizzard Entertainment made two big announcements yesterday in their scheduled livestream. While they were set to unveil the future of their MMORPG, World of Warcraft, they also announced a return to the past. The fan favourite expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, which originally released back in 2008, will be coming to World of Warcraft Classic in 2022. Meanwhile the new expansion was confirmed to be Dragonflight.

Return of the King

The return of Wrath of the Lich King was expected by fans after the successful releases of Burning Crusade Classic last year, and the Classic ‘Season of Mastery’. The latter of which saw players able to join a new server with fresh characters to take on modified versions of the classic game’s challenges.

Wrath of the Lich King, by recorded subscription numbers, was the most popular of the game’s current nine iterations. Returning it to classic servers seems like a no-brainer, but Blizzard have already announced a single but important change to the game. The automatic ‘Dungeon Finder’ feature which was added to the game later on in Wrath of the Lich King’s life, won’t be appearing in the new ‘Classic’ version. Lead Producer of WoW Classic, Holly Longdale described the feature as being one that wasn’t a good fit for the Classic community. The WoW Classic experience is touted as one that returns to the more social and community focused experience of the earlier days.

As such, this may be the last expansion to hit Classic servers, as many members of the community view Wrath of the Lich King as the last expansion made to the original vision for the game. Considering it’s successes however, it doesn’t seem like Blizzard will be abandoning the project any time soon, and we could be looking at more ‘seasons of mastery’ in the future, potentially for Burning Crusade, and Wrath of the Lich King.

Soaring to new horizons

Looking to the future, the new name of the game is Dragonflight. As speculated by many fans, in the MMORPG’s ninth expansion the dragons will be taking centre stage. Set in their long abandoned former homeland, the Dragon Isles, the expansion will see explorers from the Horde and Alliance, travelling by ship to the newly revealed islands alongside their draconic allies. Lead narrative designer, Steve Danuser describes the isles as a place that has lain dormant for 10,000 years, hidden by ancient magic. But now as the elements and life begins to return to the land, the titanic watchers have re-activated the beacon, and recalled the dragons back to their home.

Described as an adventure of exploration and discovery, rather than warfare or grand cosmic stakes, your character will venture to the new lands alongside other explorers and researchers, rather than soldiers. Players will traverse rocky shores, long sprawling plains, icy mountains, and ancient ruins, all while the land comes alive around them with devastating elemental forces. During the new experience, players will be able to ride on a customizable dragon mount. This ‘dragon riding’ feature promises to update the experience of flying in the game, making it more dynamic with momentum, speed, and gravity being important factors.

But players who would rather be a dragon, than ride one, are not out of luck. The livestream also announced the new playable race, The Dracthyr. These draconic and humanoid hybrids will be able to pick either faction to play on, but have access to only one class. The Evoker. The Evoker is a new class, exclusive to the Dracthyr, which will give players the ability to make use of their draconic wings and breath weapons, along with colour based magics, to both damage enemies and heal allies.

Other changes and updates are set to come alongside the expansion as well. These include a return to the more classic style of ‘talent trees’, where players will earn points to customize their character every level. Professions will also be seeing an update. Gathering and crafting is said to have been greatly expanded, with the ability to specialize into more niche areas, and to complete work orders for other players. Additionally, updates to the UI to make the HUD more modern and customizable will be coming as well.

More to come

More news is expected to come out over the next few months, in the build up to these releases. No window for a release date was given for Dragonflight, but alpha and beta testing is expected to start later this year. Wrath of the Lich King Classic is slated for release in 2022. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for future updates. In other news, in May the studio will offer a preview of Warcraft’s first game built from the ground up for mobile, which is scheduled for release later this year.

D&D Beyond just leveled up in a big way

D&D Beyond, the company behind the official digital toolset for Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition, have long worked as partners of Wizards of the Coast, the publisher for the popular tabletop RPG. However, D&D Beyond have now been acquired by Wizards of the Coast, announced earlier today on both companies twitter pages.

What exactly this will mean for fans of the Tabletop RPG, and the 10 million registered users of D&D Beyond isn’t apparent just yet. However, the staff at D&D Beyond were quick to reassure their users that Wizards of the Coast has no plans to stop supporting D&D Beyond. They go on to confirm that the purchases their customers have made, along with the data for their characters and campaigns they’ve built won’t be going anywhere. The team in general expressed excitement about getting to work with Wizards of the Coast, in improving their support for the game.

This will be welcome news for many players. D&D Beyond has been praised for it’s quick and easy to use features since it launched in 2017. These features include a character builder and digital character sheet, monster and spell listings that can be sorted and filtered, an encounter builder, and an interactive overlay Twitch Extension. D&D Beyond also provides official D&D content available to purchase, as well as the ability to create and add custom homebrew content.

What could this mean?

Now that the service is set to become an official product of Wizards of the Coast, many fans are hopeful that the service could provide free digital versions of books, for those who own a physical copy. In addition, some fans speculate that this could see the return of playtest ‘beta’ content to D&D Beyond. Wizards of the Coast usually releases playtest content in PDF’s under the name ‘Unearthed Arcana’ to gather feedback from players before it’s adapted into upcoming rule and settings books. D&D Beyond has not supported this content for some time, but with this closer partnership, could do so again. However, whether or not these wishes will become a reality, is yet to be determined.

Wizards of the Coast, during D&D Celebration 2021, announced that an updated version of the fifth edition rulebooks will be released in 2024, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of D&D. A calculated move that seeks to appease the already incredibly large player base of the 5th edition to the RPG which launched in 2014. They assured their customers that the new updated rules would be compatible with the current version of the game, whilst cleaning up some of the inconsistencies born from the gradually shifting design philosophies behind the scenes over the last few years. Given the timing of this acquisition, it seems probable that D&D Beyond will play a big part in delivering this new updated content to the players when it releases.

Whether this acquisition will lead to positive changes remains to be seen. Thankfully, Wizards of the Coast and their partners are no strangers to hearing and responding to fan feedback. And we will be excited to see what the team at D&D Beyond can acomplish, with an even closer working relationship with the publisher.

Oh, Lost Ark, thank you for being co-developed by Amazon Games, now I can flex my New World-roasting hamstring again! Can’t be as cartoonishly harsh as usual on account of Lost Ark becoming quite well-received, but hey, I like a challenge.

For a little while though, some players have had difficulties accessing premium content in-game, some not even able to touch the in-game store.

A community manager of the official Lost Ark forum shared a statement regarding the missing premium items and store updates here… Sweet Baby Jesus, I’m not even joking when I say the Lost Ark and New World forum website formats are… Uncannily similar, to put it mildly! If I didn’t know any better, I’d say Amazon Games might’ve given up on trying to salvage New World and jump ship to something that’s running a tighter one… But what do I know.

And on that note, Lost Ark has been encountering some server instability issues in largely European regions, in part due to high player traffic, which… Between this, New World’s similar issue and the PS5 sales shortage, I think I smell a recurring 2020’s theme coming on.

‘So when will these missing Premium Content items, Crystalline Auras and more come back? Well, the developers are working on a fix. There is no exact date or time for the upcoming update that will fix most of those “major commerce-related issues.

It is important to note that the developers are “hoping” to include all the fixes in the Lost Ark update and on 15th February 2022, they noted “we are prepping for this coming week’ – Lost Ark Manager  TrevzorFTW.

Made in Abyss is an orgasmically gorgeous manga (written by Akihito Tsukushi) and anime series about a little girl and her sentient robot buddy, only to go from wholesome exploration of a vast pretty fantasy landscape to “uncle Lovecraft’s funtime murder hole“ in the span of a few episodes.

A Made in Abyss Action JRPG adaptation was announced in May of 2021 to be developed by Spike Chunsoft, the company behind the Danganronpa games, which have some of the best plot twists in gaming in my humble opinion.

Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling Into Darkness is set to release in 2022 for Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Steam… Now let’s analyse some screenshots yall!

Alongside the Made in Abyss story mode following the anime, there will also be a mode where you make your own cave raider who sets out to explore The Titular Abyss. This mode’s story will be written by Akihito Tsukushi. Mild shame that the skin colour options are lacking, but that may change in future updates.

“Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness is a 3D Action RPG in which the player themselves delve into the world of the Abyss and seek out its depths through growth and overcoming hardships. Other than a story mode that follows the plot of the anime, there’s an original story supervised by the series author Akihito Tsukushi, in which players can experience a dark fantasy in the flavor of the original series. Many characters from the original series appear in-game, and event scenes are fully voiced by the anime cast” – Spike Chunsoft

My thoughts on the different interface options: The greenish one with a helmet icon is clearly health. The orange one with a meat icon could represent a hunger meter which offers different gameplay buffs when full. Blue bars in games are typically representative of a “mana” or magic guage, though it could be a thirst meter for water to balance against the food bar. The L/R buttons next to the weapon icon suggest the ability to swap between a few different weapons on the fly, encouraging strategic diversity against various enemies. The small bar next to that weapon? Could represent a Breath of the Wild style weapon degradation system, or a stamina bar that effects how many attacks you can pull off in a row before having to back off and wait for it to recharge.

Uncle Stefan’s Funtime YouTube-Recommendation Hole! Video essays are my crack pipe, so if you’re looking for interesting analyses on Made in Abyss: Mother’s Basement discusses how the anime adaptation feels less like an adaptation of a manga and more like an adaptation of a video game. Exclamation Point of aforementioned “funtime murder hole” fame did great videos on the show’s first episode and a comparative analysis on how it and Eromanga Sensei tackle a relatively common issue in circles of the anime community.

Also, HELL YEAH, bring on those shooty bang-bangs!

As for the delivery of the story mode, it seems it will alternate between cutscenes and visual novel-style text boxes, which could work out well provided that PS1 Hagrid down below manages to loosen up a little.

The Outbound Ghost, Updates, New Characters, Consoles & PC

Conradical Games will be releasing a Paper Mario & Undertale inspired Game, with their already released Demo on Steam after getting 285% funded. The popularity increases by the second and Conradical Games continues to update backers and followers on Twitter, Youtube, Steam, Discord and through the Kickstarter Campaign. Impressive, but well deserved. Conradical Games has not once left their backers in the dark, we are always being notified of the amazing additions they’re making to the game.

Here’s a list of some of what we’ve gotten so far. But first…

What is The Outbound Ghost?

For those of you who haven’t heard of The Outbound Ghost, it’s an RPG adventure game, developed by Conradical Games and inspired by Paper Mario & Undertale. The game follows the story of our protagonist who dies in a car crash and ends up in the outskirts of a town called ‘Outbound’. Looking to gain back their memories and cause of death, they meet some other ghosts along the way. You must help these characters come to terms with the afterlife so they pass on in peace.

“In the world of The Outbound Ghost, ghosts are the embodiment of regret. Most people go to the afterlife after dying, yet those who were unhappy with their previous lives become ghosts and are forced to haunt the Earth until they right their wrongs. The Outbound Ghost Soundtrack

This beautiful soundtrack has been created by Kimmsoft who is also working on Aria Disconnect. We can all agree that soundtracks help to give body to a certain scene, dialogue or gameplay and build the atmosphere. The music is truly enchanting and gives off the vibes of love, loss, pain, regret, community and hope.

(But hey, that’s just my opinion, perhaps I’m also secretly hoping these soundtracks will be available to purchase).

Introduction To A New Character & Mechanic

Conradical Games demonstrates their new mechanics while introducing us to a mysterious-masked character. Wonder what this little guy’s story is…He has the appearance of a thief, perhaps one in their past life? Conradical games don’t delve into too much detail about this character, however, they do explain their new mechanic.

The protagonist can hide in bushes and shade to hide from the mysterious sneaky ghost and hopefully avoid them getting past, towards the other side of the boulder.

Conradical Games then continues to ask what we think will happen if they catch us. Personally, I somewhat hope for a battle similar to what we’ve seen with shirley or perhaps a completely new mini-game, a surprise we haven’t encountered before.

Conradical Games has gone on to show us their progress in the game development and has asked us all which we prefer for this area, top-down or 3rd person perspective. We’ve added the two down below for you to have a look yourself, it would be helpful to leave your comments down below!

I feel as though both views are fantastic, it would be a good idea to have a change of view, depending on the section of that area the player enters. Take NieR Replicant or NieR Automata for example. There had been a change of perspective from third person perspective to a 2D platform-style. Changes like that truly add to the essence of a specific area and sometimes make it more memorable.

The post EPIC Adventure RPG, Paper Mario & Undertale inspired ‘The OutBound Ghost’ Releasing In 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox & Nintendo Switch first appeared on Get2Gaming.

During the MIX Next showcase for indie games that are coming soon, Wartales had the release of its early access version announced for December 1st.

To clarify, that’s Wartales as in War Tales, not Wart Ales. Like, not to turn this into a roast, but y’all really couldn’t have just capitalized the T? You know you messed up in your naming when it results in a leftist advocating for capitalism!

Shiro Games are the developing company behind Wartales, a medieval open-world RPG seeing you act as manager to a rag-tag group of mercenaries you’ve picked out. The combat system relies on turn-based tile-moving tactics, similar to the ‘Fire Emblem’ games or ‘South Park: The Fractured But Whole‘, which if my days watching letsplays by DashieGames and Jacksepticeye are anything to go by, is actually pretty fun. Story: Set in the medieval fantasy world of Edoran, which is ironic because that name literally combines my favourite ancient Japanese historical era with my favourite Akira Kurosawa film! That’d be like calling a vegan fast food brand Steakham!

The Wartales universe is plagued by a totally non-topical and definitely coincidental plague, so in an attempt to make the best from a bad situation, you squad up with the lads to form your own ‘war brand’ and find a king or lord who’ll pay you to give opposing forces a case of the shanked jankers.

Gameplay Depth: Outside combat, other important actions at the end of each in-game ‘working week’ include distributing wages and managing morale. You’ll also be responsible for feeding your crew. This combination of mechanics sounds interesting in-part because it reminds me a lot of an interesting video on ludo-narrative dissonance in Darkest Dungeon, which has similar mechanics. Said video was made by one Harry Michael Brewis (AKA Hbomberguy, AKA H-bomb, AKA Fellow Mind-Brain Explordinaire), who has a knack for fitting videos about video games, film and political discourse all under one roof.

Nicolas also claimed the early access version of Wartales will be available for around a year or year and a half, during which time, the game will see various updates.

Starfield is Bethesda’s first new intellectual property in over 25 years and is shaping up to be one of the most highly-anticipated RPGs of 2022. Though the developer is content to keep much of the game in wraps, the excitement around Starfield is hard to ignore. The Game Director and Executive Producer of Bethesda Game Studios, Todd Howard, recently held a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything). As part of this, he shared information about Starfield concerning the game’s character creation system.

From their fallout series and all the way back to The Elder Scrolls: Arena, Bethesda’s games have always strived for diversity and variety in options they offered players regarding the creation and customization of characters. Even though some have expressed concern that the game would feature humans as the sole playable race, it was still assumed that Starfield would offer sizable customization possibilities. Todd Howard’s confirmation has provided us with some answers.

Todd Howard shared his excitement regarding Starfield’s character creation system in the Reddit AMA. We will apparently be able to choose not only the character’s background and skills but also their pronouns. He also confirmed that the voiced lines would reflect the player’s pronouns in any relevant dialogue.

While not explicitly clarified, we can assume that the system will operate similarly to Cyberpunk 2077, and the choice of pronouns won’t need to reflect physical appearance.

So far, the majority of fans have responded positively. Many (including me) are excited to create a character that better represents their identity. Some have speculated that Starfield will also return to Bethesda’s roots with a silent protagonist, as Todd Howard himself expressed disappointment with how this was handled in Fallout 4.

Players were also excited to choose their background and skills initially, so the game would be affected from the beginning, a contrast to the blank slate approach previously employed with The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, where building your character occurred spontaneously throughout the game.

Pathfinder may never have had the pop culture acclaim of Dungeons and Dragons in the pen-and-paper RPG world, but for a second there in 4th edition of D&D pathfinder was just straight up the better option. These days the game has sort of fallen from grace, due in no small part to how Endlessly accessible 5th edition of D&D is (and also the fact that Pathfinder’s second edition is kind of lacking). With that in mind, though, the Wrath of the Righteous was able to overcome the Weight of its name and has become a minor sleeper hit on steam.

Now, 2 months on from its (somewhat rocky) launch, patch 1.1 is here, and its bringing improved mounted combat in turn based mode, better performance, improved graphics, Changes to reactivity to choices, and some improved NPC visuals. There are also some changes to the crusade system and how it is managed, Including letting you control armies from the throne room, rather than having to leave the city every time.

The update comes in at a Whopping 14.2GB download on steam, and apparently those on other platforms are Reporting much larger file sizes, so there is a very substantial amount in this update. Some reports are coming in of updates to the crusader models, making it easier to distinguish units from eachother. Another major change is Scrolls are marked with quills in the inventory if they contain spells you can learn. The full patchnotes are a long read, so we will give you some of the more…interesting changes here.

• Daeran liked to stand on your bed after sex. Now he’ll assume a more comfortable position
• Primal Treant would sometimes say the lines of your companions, including those not present in the group. That was creepy and was fixed
• Candles no longer continue floating in the air after Daeran’s bath is gone from Commander’s bedroom
• Removed excessive minotaurs in Colyphyr Mines
• Venture-Captain Gristoff during the Fleshmarkets battle could freak out and start killing demons who were important for the plot. Fixed, but not retroactively. If you already encountered this issue, you will need to load an earlier save
• Sometimes, when Commander went to Greengates with Arueshalae during the quest Demon’s Heresy, the location was empty – fixed. We brought all the demons back
• Fixed Glorious Beard visuals
• Beer Elemental portrait added

Wholesome Direct 2021’s ‘Yokai Inn’ Came Out With A New Trailer

Yokai Inn was showcased at the Wholesome Games Direct earlier this year during E3. The Wholesome Games Direct is an independent showcase, voluntarily run and organised by Wholesome Games to shine a light on indie games that are thoughtful, change lives and overall, make people happier. The Wholesome Games Direct had announcements from 75 game titles this year and one of them being Yokai Inn, developed by Shiba Pixels and Moonsailor the composer of the soundtracks.

What is Yokai Inn, anyway?

Yokai Inn is an adorable life sim about spirits. You, as the player…get to run an inn for Yokai, which are Japanese spirits, traditionally seen in Japanese Folklore, most common one that’s heard of is a ‘Kappa’ which is also seen in Animal Crossing New Horizons as an NPC named ‘Kapp’n’ and many other games.

Running the Yokai Inn consists of the player cooking, crafting, farming, adopting animals, collecting furniture, meeting and befriending spirits. As mentioned on the Yokai Inn Website, here’s what you should expect from Yokai Inn.

You can “Manage and expand your inn to draw all sorts of yokai guests” and just like Story of Seasons, certain crops are grown at specific times of the year, but what’s interesting about Yokai Inn is that you get to celebrate traditional Japanese holidays with each season. On top of that, you don’t just get to adopt animals, but you can also ride some of them too! So that is certainly something to look forward to. There are many other actions included for exploration, such as swimming and climbing and the fun doesn’t stop there.

Yokai Inn is an adorable pixel game, good for anyone who enjoys life simulators, farming simulators and pixel RPGs with cute dialogue.

Dragon Age 4 is reportedly launching on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Now, this is not a hundred percent confirmed; this report actually stems from the LinkedIn profile of Daniel Nordlander, former lead player designer at BioWare. Nordlander’s profile lists Dragon Age as a title they worked on across “PS5/Xbox Series X+S/PC,” with no references to the older consoles. It is unsurprising for BioWare to look to leave the older consoles behind. Dragon Age 4 is approximated to have a 2023 release; by this time, we will be deep into the next generation of consoles, and we would have gotten past the bulk of this supply shortage. Therefore, it is plausible to exclude old generation consoles altogether due to the length of time until the game actually launches. It would also make it tricky for BioWare to push the PS5 and Xbox Series X limits while still getting the game to run well on older consoles.

While Dragon Age 4 might not be coming to last-gen consoles, EA and BioWare haven’t left those who haven’t managed to grab some new tech behind just yet. Mass Effect: Legendary Edition arrived for both generations back in May, and Battlefield 2042 is also set to launch on PS4 and Xbox One, albeit with a few technical limitations, such as smaller multiplayer matches. The nature of those games means they’re unlikely to test hardware limits as much as a major RPG, but it seems you’ve got a bit longer to enjoy your older consoles.
