What up gamers! It’s your favourite Poki-curious Pokiman on Pokimane spilling the tea, the shade and related concepts!

On February 15th, Pokimane met up with… Oddly enough, Jidion, who you may remember from the Pokimane hate raid and “bitches” controversy that happened about a month ago. But on an oddly wholesome note, they’ve announced they’re on good terms again.

While on stream, JiDion suggested Imane tweet a picture of her’s without makeup to poke fun at the haters: “Just be like, ‘This face makes more money than you’ll ever see in your life’”. Pokimane took him up on that dare and the rest is 2-day old history!

And hey, I’m prince of the male feminists, dunking on the haters is entertaining at the best of times… But now I’m going to kneecap my own entertainment-driven intentions with “is it though”?

Since that tweet, some folks from varying degrees of good and bad faith responded with accusations of “flexing your wealth”. And hey, I’ll even let you in on a couple simple arguments of varying degrees of legitimacy! I’ll get to Imane’s own thoughts below the next picture.

‘Oh, so a woman online being proud of her success alone is worth criticising? Really? Never heard you complain about big-name rappers singing about living the high life with a woman on each arm and being knee-deep in the crack game’.

‘Okay, what’s your point? That flexing your success is bad? It’s a free platform’.

“I hope you get that mad at multi-million or billion-dollar conglomerates that take advantage of their workers, in comparison to a random girl on the internet who’s been streaming and working hard for eight years to make her money and also employs numerous people at, if I do say so myself, pretty healthy and liveable amounts of money.”

I do understand why people would be upset at others for flexing their wealth in general, but contextually, do these same people get mad when YouTubers showcase their brand-new Lambos?

Unlike my last Dying Light 2 blog, my decision to write on this, plot twist, ISN’T just because we happen to have Dying Light 2 pre-order copies available (not that I’m stopping you from getting them, wink wink, nudge nudge).

There’s been some mild (by Twitter standards at least) backlash to Dying Light 2 following a recent claim the game will be some 500 hours in length! More on that here. The folks at Techland recently came out with a statement that essentially boils down to “calm your tits, we’re not trying to outdo Persona 5 here! What we MEANT was that 100% completion of the whole game will take about 500 hours, the story campaign (excluding multiple runs for different endings) will be about 20 hours. Will that be enough to please Her Majesty’s Secret Service”?… I’m paraphrasing of course, the day a company says “calm your tits” about literally anything is the day I uncritical my race theory!

Fun fact: According to the official Dying Light 2 Twitter, 500 hours would be the approximate time it’d take to walk from Warsaw to Madrid.

More specifically, the Dying Light 2 team have given the following approximations:

• 20 hours to complete the main story.
• 80 hours to finish the story AND all side quests.
• 500 hours to “max out” the game with all “choices and endings, checking every place on the map, every dialogue and finding every collectible”.

So, why DID I choose to talk about this? Well, sit down and strap on, it’s story time! There’s this one small-time not-too-well-known indie gaming bloke you might have heard about? By the name of… checks notes. Hide E.O Couchiema? Kyjama? Kojesus? Ko- Okay, I’ll stop! Long story short, Metal Gear Solid games. Solid franchise, varying degrees of storytelling quality, always hilariously over-the-top even at the worst of times… Then Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes happened, where on launch, folks essentially paid 40 quid for what amounted to one 15-30 minute level, presumably because Konami felt like giving some cheeky foreshadowing of how they’d rather sabotage their own business than carry on making video games (though with that attitude, probably for the best they’re sticking to making Pachinko machines).

That mildly-quirky recap of the situation’s my way of saying “well hey, better too much than too little, oi oi”.

The post Dying Light 2 Studio on 500-Hour Claim’s… Backlash? first appeared on Get2Gaming.

Given the rising awareness of the D4C‘s of the board at Activision Blizzard, I find this an important and relevant time to discuss allyship (mostly in terms of the gaming sphere, but also more broadly in other topics).

What is allyship: Allyship is the act of showing or giving support to a people or social justice movement. Allyship can apply to anti-racism, anti-fascism, worker’s rights, LGBT+ inclusion, women’s rights and more.

Antifa as a political ideology has been subject to a lot of hostility in America by prominent news outlets (mostly of the Fox variety), so for a proper analysis on antifa as a concept, I recommend watching Abby Thorn’s Philosophy of Antifa. Citations up the wazoo, “BASED and Fact-Pilled af” as they say.

Being an ally takes a lot of reading, watching and thinking about various topics that vary in how well you may know them. Someone knowledgeable about aspects of race and racism may not be as familiar with LGBT+ concepts and discrimination. Someone who knows about both may not be the most aware of how the economy and systematic issues play a role in injustices. We’ll get to introductory outlets in the last two subheadings.

What causes should I ally myself with: Besides the ones listed in the allyship definition section, there are aspects of worker’s rights causes and topics that fall neatly into the wide and wonderful world of gaming. Workplace discrimination is a big problem. There is also discourse on crunch culture (which also effects the anime and manga industries to a degree). Accessibility in gaming for people with physical and mental disabilities is another good cause to stand by.

What is crunch: Crunch culture is when workers have to work extra hours with little to no extra pay, sometimes in Amazonian conditions (and I ain’t talking about the jungle). Naughty Dog is one of the biggest companies that has put its workers through crunch work. Some companies participating in crunch also threaten to leave the names of key designers off the in-game end credits if they leave before production finishes, forcing many to prioritize a salary and their CV over their mental and physical health.

What to do as an ally: Essentially, doing your part however big or small in trying to make the social issues you want fixed to be discussed and possibly improved. Sure, telling your slightly-racist grandpa (or president) that the n-word stopped being a formal term of classification in the 90s is good, but there are other ways of rising awareness of social issues.

You can follow specific channel outlets that discuss the prevalence of issues in the gaming community. Among them, you can follow @ABetterABK and @ABetterUbisoft, which have open letters and petitions pinned to the top of their profiles that can help people from around the world contribute to bettering the toxic workplace cultures of Activision Blizzard and Ubisoft.

I fancy myself a little bit of an auteur at the best of times, so I lean towards the YouTube scene of making political edutainment art as my favorite act of allyship. Long-time readers will know that James Stephanie Sterling is a favorite of mine. You can also organize protest marches, petitions, or try working with a local politician to run on a pro-intersectionality platform.

Intersectionality largely refers to the awareness of how various traits of a person can interact in different scenarios. For example, misogynoir is a term that describes the intersectionality between race and womanhood, giving a name to an issue that specifically affects women and femme-presenting who are also people of color.

For any game devs reading this, consider looking into starting a worker’s union if you feel you’re being mistreated by your boss. That said, you’d also have to try convincing your fellow colleagues that would be a good idea, which can vary in difficulty on a case-by-case basis.

This one is more of a slacktivism pet-peeve of mine, but for the love of God’s boner, please don’t post story images that read “if you’re against X, share this”. If you want to tell people something about a serious issue, just say it! I don’t want Janice Karenson thinking I’m not against racism just because I didn’t share her mood board of Idris Elba photoshopped in front of some BLM-themed graffiti!

… Now I give you an accurate image of my reaction after writing this long-ass section!

On handling backlash to inclusion: Honestly, that topic is going to have to wait for another day. But I will highlight one major warning on the topic! Do not, I repeat, DO NOT default to “google is free” activism! Specifically, the Social Dilemma, a Netflix documentary on social media, explicitly states that Google and search engine results are not the same for everyone! It’s moreso tailored to what drives interaction regardless of factual accuracy, so if you find yourself watching Joe Rogan interview Abigail Shrier one day, you could well end up listening to Paul Joseph Watson and PragerU the next… Which is ironic, because what I’m about to suggest is that you should go onto Google (I swear, I’m going somewhere with this), type in Google Scholar, find the Google Scholar search engine and then look up studies and articles on whatever subjects you want to learn about.

Better Ways To Learn About Allyship Than This… For now, maybe I’ll remake this article as a video three years later and call it a Director’s Cut.

In a shocking turn of events, my first recommendation isn’t a YouTube video, but an article reviewing an event on Allyship in EA Games and the workplace. Comrade EA!?

On a wider scale, we have How Not To Be An Ally and Why Allies Need To Knock by FD The Signifier (pronounced “fid”). While I don’t fully agree with every single criticism of Robert Tolppi (specifically the brief “he’s just a kid” sections), this and his other videos are fun ways of about common pitfalls folks can fall into regarding allyship.

Fan favorite Philosophy Tube did a great breakdown of the games industry in relation to free market ideals, with parts that hit especially hard given the rise of NFT’s.

Amazon‘s foray into the world of gaming with New World has been off to a Rocky start!

First it’s removing character customization from full in-game servers, then gear clipping woes, a bug for kicking off players via messages, reducing number of players and more! Patches have fixed most of the main issues, including the most recent glitch, a method of invincibility received by moving the window of the game during play.This sparked a conversation from some (and by some, I mean Reddit and Twitter discourse) questioning whether the exploit was intentional due to Amazon being ‘client authoritative’, which isn’t exactly the most likely presumption. I watched CJ The X’s multi-hour long heavily cited deep dive into Jeff Bezos and reading Bo Burnham’s soul for filth, one of the big takeaways from that video is essentially “say what you will, but Bezos loves the customer the way a Fujoshi loves yaoi paddles“… I’m exaggerating, but not by much!

While you’re here, I’ve heard some compare New World to a ‘Colonialism simulator’, so if you want a story-based gaming experience that definitely touches on a perspective on colonialist takeover, have a butcher’s at our store for our special edition PS5 and PS4 versions of Greedfall.

On Friday, Amazon stated in an official forum site for New World that the game is ‘not client authoritative’. The statement then goes on to read as:

 ‘New World is entirely server based. At a high level the model is this: clients dispatch controller inputs to the server, and the server then checks that input for limits that might invalidate it, then if accepted uses it as an input to a character (“actor” is our internal name) within server memory’.

This ‘server based’ claim was also supported by community manager Luxendra, stating: ‘we do full physics detail for all such actions. Upon receiving the outcome, either hit or miss, the client will adjust its visual display to match what the server has determined. There are some client side tricks we use here to ‘stretch’ the animation while the client is waiting for the server answer, but the outcome is always based only on the server answer’… In lay terms ‘we do lots of checking and managing to make sure things run smoothly in-game, but at the end of the day, the server’s own analysis and outcome is king’. So, oddly enough, THANK GOD the machine didn’t pick up an issue this time round, because again, CJ’s infinite droves of galaxy-brained genius incoming, but it’s a very real possibility that cyborg transhumanism will indeed become a thing (and to a degree already is). Even Stephen Hawking and a bunch of other big-name scientists signed the Open Letter on Artificial Intelligence that essentially boiled down to “don’t fiddle too hard with Artificial Intelligence, or it may fiddle you back”… I’m exaggerating, but not by much!

As of yet, around 8% of New World players have reached max level and the game is sitting comfortably as one of Steam‘s Top 3 most played games.

The weird PR stunt flops spectacularly, prompting staff to quickly delete the tweet.

The official Genshin Impact Twitter account announced a community challenge to celebrate hitting 2 million followers.

The challenge directed fans to follow another account, named ‘Ella Musk’ after the NPC in Genshin, who tries to communicate with hilichurls. Different ‘rewards’ (heavy on the quotation marks here) would be unlocked at different follower counts.

The official account, usually named Paimon after the traveller’s beloved companion, changed its display name to Genshin Impact. The first reward tier, unlocked at 500,000 followers, would see the name return to its original state. At one million followers, the official account would follow Elon Musk on Twitter. At three million, Musk would be invited to stream the game. Lastly, at five million followers, Musk would be invited to visit the MiHoYo headquarters.

The Paimon2TheMoon account has been around since August and currently has 62k followers. The account isn’t particularly active, so I have no idea what possessed the PR team to think this was a good idea.

The Elon Musk-related rewards only have value if you REALLY like Elon Musk, and even then, you probably don’t care about whether or not he interacts with Genshin Impact.

Not to mention, Musk (like any billionaire) is a somewhat controversial figure: some portion of the fanbase probably dislike him – meaning the ‘rewards’ are more like a deterrent.

Musk himself seemed to find the situation amusing, leading to this surreal tweet.

The whole thing feels like a fever dream. After considerable backlash, the Genshin Impact official Twitter deleted the challenge, but fans are still revelling in the absurdity of it all.

It’s not as if I can (nor do I want to) police what content Musk enjoys, but I always find it jarring when he shows interest in my favourite anime and games. I know I’m not the only one, as the quotes of this tweet show a lot of fans expressing pure discomfort.

It never stops feeling weird when the literal richest man on Earth likes the same anime as you. I think it’s some sort of social dissonance because generally, I can relate to anime fans more than others, but I can’t quite relate to someone who has a net worth of 198B USD. It’s a strange reflection of society, and if I think about it too hard my head will hurt.

The post Genshin Impact’s Elon Musk ‘challenge’ backfires first appeared on Get2Gaming.

Back in the year 2000, Marvel vs Capcom 2 made its debut in Japanese arcades. It was ported to Playstation and Xbox two years later, and received positive reception for its charmingly chaotic gameplay style and the huge cast of colourful playable characters. The game was developed by the studio Digital Eclipse, formerly known as Backbone Entertainment.

Despite the critical success of their collaborations, in 2013 the contract between Disney and Capcom expired without renewal. This resulted in Marvel vs Capcom 2 getting pulled from the digital store, effectively putting the game in Digital Jail.

But hopes have been rekindled after Digital Eclipse expressed their desire to put out a remaster in a recent interview with GamerHubTV.

The studio managed to raise over $10m in a recent investment campaign, and according to Studio Head Mike Mika, MvC2 was among their most requested titles.

The hashtag #FreeMvC2 has since exploded on Twitter, gaining hundreds of thousands of interactions, with fans begging for MvC2 to be released from Game Jail.

According to Mika, Disney and Capcom have taken notice of the fans enthusiasm for a remaster, and discussions are in the works. Many fans speculate that Disney chose not to renew their contract with Capcom for want of making their own fighting games. We hope that they’ll put that aside in favour of the retro specialism of Digital Eclipse, who have been producing a fantastic string of remasters and compilation games in the past few years – most notably, the Street Fighter 30th anniversary collection.

Before we get too excited about the possibility of a MvC2 remaster, note that Mika has said, “Ultimately, at the end of the day, it’s really not up to us. Parts of that are owned by two different, really large entities that have a lot of reasons why they would want or not want to do some of that, that we’re not privy to. So all we can really do is just make the best case possible, and try to make it easy for them, and see if they’re interested.”

The popular, online battle royale game has added a new limited edition mode and it looks a little sus…

Fortnite announced a new limited edition mode yesterday, titled “Imposters“, and it has been reminding people of the popular indie game Among Us, developed and published by InnerSloth.

So much so that even the development team behind the extremely successful whodunnit game have been publically tweeting the similarities between their game and the new mode created by Epic Games.

Fortnite: Imposters

The new Imposters mode is available to play now for a limited time only and consists of 10 players, 8 agents and 2 imposters. It takes place on The Bridge, a large multi-room environment in which agents are trying to keep it maintained while imposters are trying to destroy it without getting caught and whenever a dead body is found, chaos irrupts as everyone who is still alive tries to figure out who the imposters are.

Sound familiar?

Of course, there are certain elements that make it more Fortnite than Among Us- you can make both agents and imposters temporarily look like Fortnite’s banana mascot Peely for example, but the similarities are uncanny.

Several members of the Among Us development team took to Twitter to compare those similarities and also explain how disappointed they are with the plagiarism portrayed here.

Among Us programmer Gary Porter pointed out the similarities between the two environments and sarcastically mentioned how it was okay since they flipped certain rooms around to make it now a full rip-off of the hit indie game.

The community director, Victoria Tran, also tweeted to express how disappointed she was and that a collaboration between Epic Games would have been better instead.

Despite the international success Among Us became last year, it still is an indie game in the world of big gaming franchises. And even though there are plenty of other games similar to Among Us (Werewolf / Mafia), it is understandable why the development team are upset with Epic Games using the same themes and terminology.

The post Fortnite: A New Imposters Mode Has Been Added And Among Us Creators Are Disapointed first appeared on Get2Gaming.

The popular AR game has recently had its settings reversed back to what it was pre-covid times and players are disappointed.

Niantic Labs, the developers behind Pokemon GO, have now decreased their interaction distances for their Pokestops and gyms, causing a lot of distress for players online after pushing for the interaction distance to become permanent.

Pokemon GO’s Interactive Distance

We all had to adapt when COVID-19 struck around the globe and affected so many of us, and this included things such as the games we would play. Pokemon GO, the AR game that revolves around travelling outside to be able to catch Pokemon, collect items at Pokestops and battle other players at Gyms, relied on constant interaction and the developers Niantic Labs had to change the way the game was operated.

Niantic introduced new interaction distances to allow players to still be able to use Pokemon GO at a safe distance and received praise for how much it improved the gameplay. However, since some countries are lessening in the number of cases, Niantic decided to decrease the interaction distance and even repealed the changes from countries such as the United States and New Zealand completely.

Players took to Twitter and Reddit to show their outrage at this decision, summarising why the interaction distances were the best changes to the game in years and how even though cases have dropped in some countries, COVID-19 is still very present and dangerous. They also said how the increased distances made it easier to interact with Gyms and eliminated issues like finicky positioning for GPS drift and allow players with health or accessibility issues to gain access to Gyms they couldn’t reach before.

Players even started a petition on Change.org to keep the increased interaction distances for Pokemon GO and it has reached over 130,000 signatures.

Hopefully, Niantic will listen to players that have started to boycott the game due to the reversal of the interaction distances, as some have been pushing for the interaction distances to stay permanent before they were changed back, so this reversal makes some feel like the developers are not listening to the players’ pleas.

The post Pokemon GO: Interactivity Distance Decreases Causing Upset Amongst Players first appeared on Get2Gaming.

Square Enix updated the Steam page for its Final Fantasy V and VI remakes to announce the two titles are to be removed for good.

But don’t worry, there’s a very good reason for it.

After July 27, both games will no longer be available to purchase due to the Final Fantasy Pixelated Remaster being released the very next day (at least, some of them). It is said to be staying more faithful than other remasters of the series’ older titles, which is a lot more that can be said about the Final Fantasy V and VI remakes.

Final Fantasy V and VI: What went wrong?

Final Fantasy V and VI were widely severely criticised by fans due to them both being ports of the mobile version, which were poorly received as well. Some criticisms were that the mobile-ported remakes came off as cheap exploitation towards the fans, and the remade art and gameplay quirks made the experience inferior to the original versions and GameBoy Advanced ports.

Therefore, what Square Enix is doing is the right way to go about introducing Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster. Removing the games from Steam will help focus the attention on the new additions and make it as simple as possible for fans and newcomers alike as they won’t be confused about what game they are attempting to buy.

What to expect from Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster:

Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster includes remasters of the first six Final Fantasy games for fans to enjoy. Square Enix plans to release them singularly in sequential order, starting with the first three in the series dropping on July 28, so Final Fantasy V and VI will have the longest wait, however it looks like it will be worth it.

The collection will keep the games’ 16-bit art style while improving the visuals and sprites of the games, suggesting to fans that this may be the best way to experience the older titles so far.

The original trailer announcing the collection didn’t show what the games would look like, however, 30 minute Youtube video showcased more about the games before getting deleted. Fear not, Twitter user Wario64 managed to share screenshots of what to expect.

So far, there has been a lack of confirmed console releases and a sparse amount of details that have left fans feeling worried. At the moment the games are only set to be released on Steam and mobile devices, but if they do well, the collection could be expanded. For now, fans can expect the first Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster game to be released in July for PC and Mobile.
