There are a number of recent and upcoming games, films and tv shows that use various cultures and mythologies to drive their stories. This series aims to explore the relationship between an IP and its surrounding mythology and how this shapes its characters. Today, we look at the tv show Moon Knight, exploring the character design of Khonshu and his links to Egyptian Mythology.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Moon Knight. 

Moon Knight

Moon Knight is Disney+‘s latest TV show set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Oscar Isaac stars as Steven-‘with a v’-Grant, a museum gift-shop employee, who has blackouts and a sleeping disorder. Steven learns he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with Marc Spector, a mercenary. Steven is suddenly thrust into a world of violent Egyptian mythology when it turns out Marc Spector is the chosen avatar of Khonshu, the Egyptian god of the moon. Under the guise of Moon Knight, Steven and Marc must work together if they are to overcome the evil forces that seek destruction of the world.

But who exactly is Khonshu?

In the TV show, Khonshu is a mysterious figure that seems to haunt both Steven’s mind and city rooftops. A violent god who uses his avatar to kill people – the god seems to be a mix of a petulant child throwing temper tantrums and a narcissist, claiming to be “true justice”. This unpleasant mix is also seen in the comics, with Khonshu manipulating Marc Spector to do his bidding and bring “vengeance” on those he deems deserving. The similarities between the comics and the TV show also extends into the character design of Khonshu. The god is presented as a looming figure, wrapped in bandages with a large bird’s skull for a head. But who exactly is this god?

Khonshu is based on the Egyptian god Khonsu. Khonsu was the god of the moon, but also associated with fertility and healing. It’s thought the name Khonsu comes from the Egyptian word, khenes, meaning to wander or travel. Khonsu, as the personification of the moon, would travel across the sky and was changeable in his nature – waxing and waning throughout the year.

Seen as the sole source of light during the night, Khonsu was seen as a protector against evil – battling the darkness, while Ra descended into the underworld to do battle there. Closely related with the darkness, therefore, Khonsu was also seen as a violent and vengeful god – and it’s here we see the links with the comic book Khonshu. In fact, Khonsu is mentioned in both the Pyramid Texts and Coffin Texts – Ancient Egyptian sources – as a force of vengeance. The Pyramid Texts state “he is the envoy who is sent to punish” and this is clearly echoed in Moon Knight, where Khonshu declares “I only punish those who deserve it, I am true justice.”

On a side note, it is also interesting how the concept of Khonsu changed over time. This is the only mention of Khonsu in the Pyramid Texts, suggesting he wasn’t that prevalent in early Egyptian mythology. This might explain why in the TV show, Khonshu seems to be sidelined by the major deities of the Egyptian pantheon. However, in the later Coffin texts, Khonsu is mentioned far more often, suggesting he had grown in importance. And by the time of the New Kingdom, when his temple was built at Karnak, he was described as “the greatest god of the great gods.” An epithet that was also used in Vol 188 of the Moon Knight comics.

The Iconography of Khonsu and Khonshu

The Egyptian god Khonsu was either depicted in mummiform or wearing a bird head. In the TV show and comics, we see Khonshu’s design takes both these elements. The mummified aspect in Egyptian iconography was probably used to point towards the eternal aspect of the god. But it also perhaps points to his protection of the wandering souls, seen in the Coffin Texts. In the comics and TV show, it serves to connect Khonshu with Ancient Egypt and also adds a disturbing element to the character. The flowing robes of the character also makes it feel ghostly – as well as a priestly image.

The TV and comics also make use of the bird head depiction. However, whilst in Ancient Egypt Khonsu was presented with a hawk or falcon head, Khonshu seems to have a raven or crow head. The falcon or hawk in Ancient Egypt was a symbol of power and sight – king of the sky overlooking his domain. However, the character design of Khonshu once again focuses on death imagery, with ravens and crows being carrion and scavengers of corpses. In addition, the use of a skull creates this unsettling image and the long, overreaching beak creates a more threatening feel than that of a hawk or falcon.

With this in mind, it is clear the character design seems to pull as much from Grim Reaper iconography as it does Egyptian mythology. With his flowing bandages, hollow skull and crescent moon-adorned staff, the character seems designed to evoke the image of Death – which can only be bad news for Steven ‘with a v’.

Another day, another Marvel character added to Fortnite. Same old, same old. After the additions of Clint Barton and Kate Bishop earlier this week, it looks like another iconic Marvel character has finally been confirmed. It’s none other than Spider-Man’s archenemy- The Green Goblin!

The popular free-to-play Battle Royale is arriving at the midway stage of its first season of Chapter 3. So far, we’ve seen a whole new island, Spider-Man swing in and even an Arcane character! However, this is when things get serious- with the Goblin gliding in on the action.

This exciting news come from Fortnite’s official website, which details the fun reason why Green Goblin has appeared on the island. Apparently, he received a top-off form The Daily Bugle regarding Spider-Man’s whereabouts and got himself over to the island immediately. Obviously, he won’t be needing to jump out the bus, with his own glider getting him over of course.

Fortnite Green Goblin Not Based On Willem Dafoe Design

After Willem Dafoe put in another stellar performance as the Goblin in No Way Home, it only seems appropriate he’d be the villain making the crossover into the Fortnite Universe. Whilst this one is more comic-accurate than the Willem Dafoe version, that won’t make him any less amazing.

Green Goblin comes with an array of themed accessories, like the Pumpkin Bomb Back Bling, Pumpkin P’axe, Goblin Glider, and the Arm the Pumpkin! Emote. Despite all the pumpkin theming, the Pumpkin Launcher unfortunately remains vaulted, which would certainly be a perfect match.

Who can’t wait for this one then? I certainly can’t! Green Goblin is undoubtedly one of the best supervillains ever, so to see him in any sort of media is a treat! Could we see him appear the upcoming Spider-Man game too? Who knows? He’s not the only addition fans are demanding in the sequel! It looks like Marvel Avengers’ just got all that more interesting. After a disappointing two years which included an interesting Spider-Man DLC, online trolling and controversial XP boosts, it looks like Square Enix are trying to get fans back onside. More specifically, they’re targeting MCU lovers by including Hawkeye’s Civil War costume in the games latest update.

The game studio initially decided against having Jeremy Renners likeness for Clint Barton’s character model. Alternatively, they chose to only have the characters clothes change in Marvel Avengers between each MCU skin, with his shave head remaining. Fortunately, they’ve come to their senses at last and decided to add some hair to the model. Whilst shaved head Barton worked better than Endgame Barton, its perhaps best just to stick with what we know!

On the other hand, the issues with the game haven’t gone away just yet. The community seem to have problems with the game’s purchasable cosmetics that annoyingly get locked in the Marketplace store. This is because the newly announced MCU skin for Marvel’s Avengers seems to spell the start of a new transition for Square Enix’s economic strategy.

However, Marvel players will not be able to find this skin cosmetic in the marketplace like usual. They will have to open Shipments as a speciality item which is bought through game play rather credits. That’s a positive we suppose. Despite this, it seems Marvel have still managed to mess up again. Some keen-eyed gamers have noticed that the single sleeve Barton has in Civil war is on his left arm when in the film its on the right. Oh the controversy!

Thankfully, it looks like players will just be happy to have the outfit in the game with the right hairstyle. Let’s not get too ahead of ourselves after all! The post Marvel Avengers Adds MCU Hawkeye Skin first appeared on Get2Gaming.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has received much praise for its since its debut,  so much so that it earned itself Best Narrative of 2021 at The Game Awards. The game astonished a lot of people by sticking closely to the original characters and packing a great soundtrack too.

A recent update has added some new features as well as patching some bugs. One of these new features is Ray Tracing functionality for PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles.

Ray Tracing Added to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

Initially, there were two performance settings available on next-gen consoles. These two choices were Quality Mode, which aims to maintain a 4K image at 30fps. This means the image quality is higher but runs at a slower framerate. Performance mode however reduces the graphical quality so that the game will run at a consistent 60fps, which allows for smoother and more responsive gameplay. This means you can choose how to optimise the game based on your own preference.

Eidos-Montreal added another mode to this selection last month to enable Ray Tracing, a rendering technique that produces more realistic lighting effects in games. They have uploaded a new video showing the effects of this feature in a test. It also compares graphics between the two consoles.

According to the video, this new mode can be used in instead of Quality mode. Guardians of the Galaxy runs at 30 frames per second with a dynamic 4K resolution when ray tracing is enabled. The only difference from Quality mode is ambient occlusion, which falls anywhere between 2880×1620 and 3840×2160.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X versions are identical; however, because to its lesser specifications, the Xbox Series S does not support ray tracing. The console can play Guardians of the Galaxy at an uncapped frame rate, but it’s not very stable so it isn’t recommended.

Ray tracing is one of the most exciting new capabilities of next-generation consoles and recent PC GPUs, but it’s also one of the most demanding, so it makes sense the Series S was left out. Regardless, it looks like both PS5 and Xbox Series X versions are well-optimized.

Get ready Marvel fans, an MMO based on the Marvel universe is on its way! Interestingly, it’s being developed by people you may not expect. The likes of Square Enix have had their shot, as have insomniac, both having varying levels of success. However, now it’s time for DC Universe Online developer Dimensional Ink Studios to step up.

This information was presented by parent company Enad Global 7. It was then recorded by Streamer @mmmmmmmmiller. Quite the name.

For those familiar with Marvel, they will know that an MMO has been rumoured for some time now. This is because of leaked concept in 2019 that displayed character designs of Daybreak’s earlier attempt at a Marvel MMO. It was shown with a slide in the presentation notes that says “Unannounced MMORPG”. Moreover, it also says that it will be a “Marvel IP based massively multiplayer online game” which is set to be led by Jack Emmert, the former lead on City of Heroes and currently works on the DC Universe Online team. If you can’t beat them, join them I suppose.

Marvel Stepping Up Moves Into Video Game Market

As we’ve previously mentioned, Marvel have been involved in quite a few games recently. After the success of Marvel’s Spider-Man on PS5 (get your copy here), Marvel have also released Marvel’s The Avengers and a Guardians of the Galaxy. It seems they’ve not only been busy with their new films and television shows.

Now trying to dominate all forms of media, it has also been confirmed there will be a sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man and a new Wolverine game too. How exciting. Additionally, XCOM developer Firaxis Games have been producing Marvel Midnight Suns. Unfortunately, it looks to have been delayed from March 2022 to sometime later in the year.

A statement was published by the creative director Jake Solomon on the games social media. Essentially, it was noting that the development team needed extra time to improve the games quality.

“We know many fans were looking forward to playing the game originally next spring, and this decision did not come lightly,” he said.

“We decided to push our launch because we need more time to make this the best game possible. It’s important to believe in our creative vision for Marvel’s Midnight Suns and want to do justice in delivering an unforgettable adventure”.

This is a refreshing take by a games developer. We’ve seen too many rushed and lacklustre games in recent years, so it’s better to wait and get a fulfilling experience. Check out our online store to pick up some of the best sellers which haven’t been rushed!

Marvel Avengers forthcoming Spider-Man DLC will unfortunately not include any story missions, it has now been revealed. Previously, we have seen the likes of Black Panther, Kate Bishop and Hawkeye receive their own levels to fight, but it looks like that won’t be the case with our favourite wall-crawler.

Many fans assumed that Spider-Man would receive the same treatment as any other DLC, because that’s what we were essentially told. This is what the games senior producer, Dan Matlack, said during an announcement on the game’s Discord in September.

“Spider-Man is what we call an ‘event’ so he will have cut scenes and a story for sure”.

Unsurprisingly, some took that to mean that would be accompanied with story missions. However, Avengers gameplay director Phillippe Therien has confirmed that is not the case.

Instead of a short campaign with new missions, the web-slingers story will be displayed through audio logs and illustrated cut scenes. These will be unlocked by completing new Avengers multiplayer challenges. Check out this game play clip below which explains the DLC in further detail:

Spider-Man Hoping To Save Avengers Game

The delayed and PlayStation-exclusive superhero will finally arrive on PS4 and PS5 come November 30. Can he be the superhero to save the Avengers from their miserable fate?

Spidey won’t be arriving alone when we finally get to play as him either. Accompanied by a new Hero Event called With Great Power, he will team up with Ms. Marvel and Black Widow to try stop an AIM plan. Despite working in a team, he will apparently be debating whether he prefers working alone or not.

Despite the fact the Spider-Man content is a PlayStation exclusive, it has been revealed the game’s 2.2 patch will include content available on all formats. As a result, we will be presented with a Klaw Raid which takes place after the events of the War for Wakanda expansion.

“We want to spend our efforts on content that everyone can enjoy, so we chose to spend a lot of our energy on the Klaw raid that’s coming up at the same time,” Crystal Dynamics’ Therien said.

“Really that’s a simple decision for us. Spider-Man can play all the content, but then we release a piece of content that’s good on all platforms. Really that was a decision that’s been that way since the beginning,” he claimed.

Hopefully, the introduction of Spider-man will help the game escape recent controversy. It’s lifespan so far has been extremely lacklustre, resulting in poor critic responses and fan trolling. They’ve hardly helped themselves, especially with the addition of paid XP boosters, which they were forced to subsequently remove.

It comes at a difficult time for the games developers, who admitted that  Crystal Dynamics was potentially a bad fit for Marvel’s Avengers given its lack of experience with the games as a service model. We just hope they can deliver a somewhat satisfying Spider-Man experience. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just an enjoyable wall-crawling adventure.

The post Avengers SpiderMan Won’t Include Story Missions first appeared on Get2Gaming.

Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy has impressed fans and critics alike thus far. The latest patch for the game has just been released, and its without doubt the biggest one yet. PS5 and Xbox Series X/S players will be glad to hear the addition of ray-tracing, whilst there have also been improvements in performance for the PS4.

Additionally, we will also see the Save Rollback feature added, allowing players to go back to an earlier checkpoint of the mission. Obviously, the patch will also help fix any bugs and issues which the game has had, which we have to say haven’t been that many. Unfortunately for PC players, they will have to wait until November 19 for their update to arrive. Could this be due to the vast amount of storage the original game needed? Perhaps not, but it’s still worth noting for anyone looking to purchase the PC version.

Despite this, PC players are still certainly in for a treat, especially with how the game looks on it. On the other hand, that doesn’t mean the console editions don’t look stunning either. Have a quick look at the trailer below to remind yourselves of the Guardians adventures right here:

Boba Fett will soon be playable to Boba T-bag on fools in Fortnite!

Epic Games has announced the Star Wars bounty hunter will appear on December 24th at 7PM ET, the weekend before The Book of Boba Fett comes to Disney+ (December 29th). Furthermore, Disney+ recently released a documentary on the character ‘Under the Helmet: The Legacy of Boba Fett’.

While a skin for Fennec Shand (played by Ming Na Wen, who’s breakout role was as the titular 1998 Mulan) hasn’t been confirmed yet, Epic have confirmed that she will play a role in Boba Fett’s additions to Fortnite.

Disney also released some trailers and previews for it’s future projects on Disney+ Day for the Obi-Wan Kenobi TV show and Baymax! In fact, while I have you here-

Marvel Shows Announced on Disney+ Day:

X-Men ’97. It’s no ’69, but I’ll take what I can get! This show will be a continuation of the original X-Men animated series from 1992-97. Coming to a certain Disney-centric streaming platform near you in 2023.

Moon Knight. Oscar Isaac will play the titular knight of moon, which will reportedly debut next year.

She Hulk. When it comes to crossing the Venn diagram between fans of legal procedural dramas, superhero action and folks who are into the beloved pastime of watermelon thigh-crushing, I’m sure this will be a hit! Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black, The Other Half) will play the titular She Hulk and it is set for a 2022 release.

Ms Marvel.  Kamala Khan has been receiving plenty of love in comic world despite mixed opinions on the Marvel’s Avengers game she debuted in. Even then, I’ve heard her part of the story was well written, but otherwise, you know you messed up when you’re less highly rated than the LEGO Avengers version (which we happen to have!). Set to release in 2022.

Marvel’s Avengers is known for its variety of skins available and now it’s getting into the spooky season…

Crystal Dynamics has released the first Halloween-themed skin for its action role-playing brawler game, Marvel’s Avengers, and fans cannot wait to get a hold of it.

Marvel’s Avengers tend to take inspiration for its skins from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, yet sometimes it also takes it from the comic books, and this is one of those occasions. The video game published by Square Enix is constantly receiving updates and new content released in ties with the Marvel Cinematic Universe and also expanding upon the Marvel universe available in the game for players to earn or purchase.

Capwolf

The new skin design is based on a Captain America comic from 1992 where Captain America is depicted as a werewolf on the cover of Captain America issue 405. There are some differences as Captain America’s fur on the comic book was black and the fur for the skin is white, yet carries the iconic concept over to the video game well and is possibly the most extravagant design the game has seen as of yet.

It is available to purchase from today in the Marketplace, yet it has still not been stated the price or whether it will be a rare, epic, or legendary skin.

It is highly possible that this is only the beginning of Halloween-themed skins available on offer, and with the recent zombie episode in the Disney+ Marvel show, What If…?, we might be seeing more horrific designs our way.

The official Twitter account for Marvel’s Avengers also tweeted that The Cosmic Threat Event is making its return from today until November 4th and gives fans the chance to earn Thor’s Enhancement Outfit and spooky nameplates along with it!

Fans of Marvel’s Avengers are also anticipating the video game’s first raid event that is meant to be happening sometime soon and will feature Klaw from Black Panther comics/movie as the antagonist.

Surprising (or not, depending who you ask) that this hasn’t happened sooner, considering Fortnite is no stranger to mixing up superhero cosmetics, modes and expansions to their universe. From Marvel’s Avengers,DC heroes and villains to even a semi-custom super suit that would make Frozone blush, it’s about time Epic Games got on the Spider-Man train.

Known reliable dataminer and previously discussed leaker ‘HYPEX’ provided details of a likely collaboration between Epic Games’ cash cow and the friendly neighborhood web-swinger. He claimed to have found an item code named ‘WestSausage’, seemingly related to a new project Epic Games is working on, being described as having ‘swinging mechanics’. Besides ‘west sausage’ sounding vaguely like ‘web swinger’ when you say it three times fast, the code of the item also includes notes about ‘Swing Attach Location, Swing Detach Time, Swinging, Swing Accelerate, Swing Jump’.

I’m a profusely adoring fan of the Baller vehicle, or as I like to call it, the ‘rolly-ball wooshy swinger-noodle‘, so sign me up if that means we’ll be seeing some more physics-based swingaling-by-the-dingaling action return to Fortnite!

Besides Spider-Man, Fortnite has also recently seen Eddie Brock, Venom and Carnage come to the game as purchasable skins (though you can also get Carnage by grinding up the Season Pass). There’s also a neat handy-dandy symbiote tendril weapon you can pick up in the game, which was temporarily removed because of how powerful it is. Considering I’ve only successfully managed to fight off one bloke who had that weapon in all the times I’ve encountered people with it, yeah, can agree the Carnage tendril is pretty overpowered… Except when I have it, then it’s completely fair all around you guys, I swear😉… Alternative theory, maybe West Sausage is gonna be a hotdog themed knock-off parody and I’m completely off the mark.

Given the upcoming Spiderman No Way Home movie coming up AND the post-credits scene of Let There Be Carnage revealing the Tom Holland Spider-Man’s existence in the Sony Venom films, this is a teaser of some extra crossover event where more cosmetics and modes will be announced near the film’s release. It worked well when Fortnite did that in a Shang Chi crossover bundle, but fingers crossed this doesn’t turn into another ‘The Emperor has returned’ moment like when Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker’ debuted its opening crawl via Fortnite cutscene.
