Pikmin Bloom is the latest AR (Augmented Reality) game by Niantic, WHICH I MUST SAY should have been called “Nyantic” for catboy reasons. Players can find and grow their own Pikmin which you can order around to go on adventures or grow more seedlings that let you expand your ever-growing army of floral-minion cuteness. Think Pokemon Go, but for hipsters LIKE ME!

You can earn fruit in-game that are tasty-looking, though your mileage may vary in terms of their different effects on you personally… JUST LIKE IN REAL LIFE!

How to Grow Pikmin in Pikmin Go- I mean Bloom:

It can take anything between 1,000 to 10,000 steps because of reasons, said reasons depending on what kind of Pikmin you want to grow. Red and Blue bois take about a thousand steps because they’re commoners, whereas the purple-clad bourgeois ones are worth more because they’re less common.

The bigger the seed, the longer you have to wait to grow a Pikmin, as they contain rarer Pikmin and require up to 10,000 steps to hatch. Big seed release ‘Decor Pikmin’ that are the big valuable collectibles because these ones can cop drip fashion like Slick Goku. Gotta catch em all, I suppose.

And while I have ya, I’m guessing you’re a possible Pikmin fan if you’re reading this, so feel free to have a butcher’s at our store if you want to get your hands on Pikmin 3 Deluxe Edition and other such titles.

All The Colours of the Pikmin: Can you guess the word associations tied to each Pikmin type in game?

Each of these types have different Pokemon style evolution stages. The leaf on a Pikmin’s head turns into a bud, then a flower once it reaches maturity in some yonic semi-Freudian metaphor for ssssssseeing how they grow up so fast.

Surviving the Aftermath is an upcoming zombie game by Paradox Interactive and Finnish developers at Iceflake Studios (presumably named because “Snowflake Studios” would be too politically charged for Tumblr liberals who would take it as a microaggression against Antarctica). Have a butcher’s at the game’s release date trailer here. The game will be leaving Early Access (and by extension, fully released as a purchasable game) on November 16th, so get in there while you still can!

Side note: Speaking of Aftermaths, World War Z is also releasing an Aftermath update, the launch trailer for that featuring a creepily designed space-suit looking zombie inhaling questionably noxious fumes from some inconceivable tubular system. If you want to have a go at it, get it yourself at our store here and have a butcher’s for anything else you’re looking for.

Surviving the Aftermath is a post-apocalyptic city-builder, which is hilariously ironic considering the whole point of a post-apocalypse is that there wouldn’t be one if it was that easy to rebuild, but I’m assuming it’s going in a Walking Dead direction of “build up your own fort and society to defend against The Horde TM”. As the release of the game is marketed as a ‘1.0 version’, this suggests we’ll be seeing regular (likely free) updates and improvements, like with Fortnite or Apex Legends.

Players are put in charge of a settlement and have to direct different characters to perform different actions like scouting for supplies and reducing threats. Besides fighting off zombies and mutated monsters, you also have to go toe to toe with raiders, radiation poisoning and balancing out food and water production. All interesting, but if you want a game that really pushes the limits as an artistic exploration of what it’s like to struggle with hunger and food shortages, DO NOT! I repeat do NOT play Pathologic… Hbomberguy’s video on the other hand– Also, let’s just say it has some… Ironically accurate claims that ended up being applicable to lockdown despite coming out months before it.

Okay, no more tangents starting now… If I can help it:

Surviving the Aftermath was revealed at Paradox Interactive’s PDXCON 2019 event and has since been in early access for 2 years. Those 2 years lead to alot of player feedback that was taken into consideration, as alluded to in the trailer. Some changes include the addition of things like vehicles, quests, outposts, and overhauling aspects of the skill tree categories like exploration, combat, technology and most importantly, ECONOMY. A zombie survival where you can seize the means of production? Sign me up!

The 1.0 “Endgame” update will greatly expand on Aftermath’s late game content with new settlements, storylines and a campaign against a new unknown threat. Given how much Call of Duty Vanguard has been showing up as a YouTube ad all over my feed, I’d bet my left bollock the hitherto unknown threat is N@zi Zomboners.

Surviving the Aftermath is available in early access and launches November 16th for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.

“Daamn Respawn, back at it again with the semi-prehistoric semi-techy sci-fi tropical aesthetic? Lemme get some siiiip!“

Apex Legends Season 11 will see players fight on its fourth and largest map on November 2nd. Publishing company EA have stated that the Storm Point location will be the “eye in the hurricane” to the rest of the map’s pretty beaches and crystal waters… And I really do mean CRYSTAL clear folks! The day I first saw clear water at a beach IRL blew my f****ing mind out my ear holes so hard that I still have trouble making out music lyrics first-listen to this day… Also, it has been confirmed that the game will also see players fighting off SPIIIDERRS. This alongside the nature of the new Gaea map and said SPIIIDERRS was previously covered in our reports on Apex Legends dataminers here. For the Apex Legends Season 11 gameplay trailer itself, click here… Also, old news, but Apex removed tap-strafing!? I’m sure if I knew what that was beforehand I’d be reeally mad.

In addition to the map being the biggest, we’ll also see “a base embedded within a giant mountain marking the highest location in any Apex Legends map to date”. Not alot of people know this about me, but heights are my fetish (I’m exaggerating, but not by much), so that combined with the fact that you can’t take fall damage in-game means I know what I’ll be doing November 2nd.

We’ll also be seeing the inclusion of Ash, the antagonist from Titanfall 2 and narrating overseer of Apex Legends Battle Arena mode. That and Titanfall’s C.A.R Sub Machine Gun. For a deep dive on that, have a butcher’s here.

With Ash wielding her sci-fi super slicey dicey, fingers crossed this means Apex will be seeing the option for swordplay combat, that would be awesome. Worked out pretty well when Fortnite allowed you to swing around lightsabers, so fingers crossed we get similar mechanics here. By the looks of it, seems more likely that the sword is just an Ash-only move that lets her do Wraith-like teleportations, but hey, a guy can dream.

Furthermore, the picture below seems to be implying there will be some swimming involved, which ties into another EA statement regarding the Apex map’s inclusion of “island clusters”, so I’m down for that. On a similar note, I find water levels in gaming to be basically like Fugu sashimi: Easy to get wrong, but boy golly gosh gee wilikers is it great when it goes right… Also, shoutout to autocorrect for initially putting down sashimi as “mishmash”.

The Daily Shill + A Cheeky Teaser

If you’re looking for more first-person shooty bang-bang funtimes, we have good prices on stuff. Doom Eternal and Animal Crossing New Horizon, which are basically the same game, trust me. Void Bastards if you ever wanted to try “what if roguelike but shooty-bang-bangs”. A Brief History of Uncharted:

The Uncharted games, developed by Naughty Dog, are a series of third-person action-adventures with critically praised stories to boot. The series is heavily inspired by Indiana Jones, seeing you, the player, explore beautiful vistas, hunt for treasure and artifacts, punch bad guys in the face and get stuck in with a series of thrilling set-pieces. The primary protagonist of the main games is Nathan Drake, in this film, played by Tom Holland from the arthouse hit drama ‘Devil All the Time’ and nothing else. Nothing at all. Definitely not known for a role as a certain friendly-neighborhood arachnid-human at all- Wait who’s that below!?

Time to do a trailer BREAKDOWN, BREAKDOWN:

The trailer seems to be mixing up aspects of the first game’s origin elements with characters and plotlines from Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, as the trailer features someone heavily implied to be Chloe Frazer, a brief love interest and greatly skilled adventurer who’s wit is only matched by her hotheadedness. She earns her own spin-off game in Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. Chloe is also Indian-Australian in the games, so three cheers for mixed-race representation! I’m also mixed.

One brief scene from the opening teaser section (full trailer here) features an abandoned (possibly pirate-owned) ship in a cave, which smacks of a good-ol swashbuckling sword fight being afoot, as that’s what happened with the last similar-looking ship-setting combo in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

The trailer also confirms the role of “Sully” (no, not that one, the one in the middle) will be played by Mark Wahlberg! In the games, Sully serves as a sort of experienced semi-mentor figure with a Sean Connery Bond-esque suave demeanor and a voice like chocolate-dipped honeycomb with a cup of coffee on a cold winter day. *Insert “ha ha, he looks more like Nathan Drake than the bloke playing Nathan Drake” joke here*.

The set-piece with the Cargo plane where Nathan scales his way in Tom Cruise-ian fashion is an homage to a similar point in Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. As this is a whole new retelling of the story, it’ll be great to see the film jump around to the greatest hits of the franchise’s moments.

And last, but not least, the scene of Nathan being flummoxed by a henchman’s thick Scottish brogue is clearly a masterfully artistic homage to… That one scene in ‘Wreck it Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks The Internet’ where Merida’s one and only joke is “noo won understahnds me be-coz I’m scootish”…

That, or the beloved British sitcom Allo Allo, where the running gag with one character is “noo won understoonds me becoz I’m specking in brooken Franch”… I jest, but I’ll take that as intentional for my own personal headcanon, your mileage may vary.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that November’s PlayStation Plus games will include three bonus PlayStation VR titles

To celebrate PS VR’s fifth birthday, there will be in addition to the service’s regular monthly offering in which PlayStation Plus members will get, with full details on November’s PS Plus titles set to be confirmed later this month.

In a PlayStation Blog post which includes “a trip down memory lane” with PS VR developers, Sony revealed the most popular games for the platform to date, based on playtime, excluding free title The Playroom VR.

According to Sony, PlayStation VR has sold over five million units; the platform now supports more than 500 games and experiences. This headset features “dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity”, having players feel “an even greater sense of presence and become even more immersed in their game worlds”, they claimed in February 2021.

The success of this has lead to a development of a “next-generation VR system” designed for PS5 set to release during the 2022 holiday season.

Thank Christ on a silver platter that Squid Game got as popular as it did so fast, now I have an excuse to crossover two of my favourite things: Gaming and the hit Netflix series Squid Game. Here’s some games I recommend for other fans of the show! Click on the highlighted subheadings for links to where you can get them on our page!

Overcooked

I dunno about you, but that episode with the honeycomb sure got me hungry. The art of cooking is a must, but unlike that particular episode, you won’t have to fly solo in Overcooked! In fact, it’s best with some good ol couch co-op or online play, as you and your partner(s) arrange how to tackle the incoming orders at a restaurant by divvying up responsibilities among eachother. Communication is key, speed is key and great food is definitely a nice Brucey bonus!

Mario Party Games

While this one may not have as high stakes as life-or-death struggles, you gotta admit the Front Man and the folks in charge of the Squid Game competitions are definitely a creative bunch. Maybe in another life, the billionaire masterminds behind the Squid Game would’ve found a new joi de vivre as a game designer, but that’s neither here nor there. Mario Party games will definitely scratch that itch for letting you take part in a wide variety of mini games with unique rules, be it with friends, family, enemies or frenemies!

Fortnite (figures, toys, board games and bundles)

Let’s not mince words. Between Squid Game, Hunger Games and PUBG, the battle royale genre (fittingly inspired by the classic book and film ‘Battle Royale’) definitely has its fingers in a lot of pop-culture pies. Fortnite is completely free to play on most platforms, but if you’re feeling like bringing some extra style to the battle field, buy our Last Laugh expansion bundles on Xbox or PS5 if you want to play with 3 character skins (Joker’s having multiple styles), some cool extra cosmetics and even 1000 Vbucks you can spend to get extra stuff in the in-game store!

Nier Automata Game of the YoRHa Edition

While a little more on the anime’d up post-apocalyptic existential sci-fi train than Squid Game, both properties have very well written mystery elements, a heaped tablespoon of philosophical and social commentary, plus a series of fittingly dramatic moments of tear-worthy crippling dread at the ruthlessness of the human species (and a tiny dash of optimism for good measure… maybe).

Kirby Battle Royale!

Basically the same joke as Fortnite, but also POYO!!!! And I swear, the Kirby Right Back At Ya theme song will live rent free in my brain hole until the day I die. Play Kirby Battle Royale with friends or in a fun little single-player campaign.

The Escapists 1+2

This one’s for those of you who’d be on the side of voting out of the titular Squid Games after the testicle-shrinkingly intense suspense of the red light green light game. What better way to get out of that scenario than a good ol fashioned prison escape game?

November 15th of this year will mark two whole decades since the Xbox first launched. Wow. It’s older than my brother.

In a recent announcement, Microsoft shared that they would be releasing a special 20th-anniversary controller and headset for the Xbox to commemorate the occasion.

The headset and controller both feature a translucent black finish with silver internals so you can see the interior details of your controller. It also features details in Xbox-iconic green, at the back and around the D-pad.

The 20th Anniversary Special Edition controller will be complete with all the features you expect from the new Xbox Wireless Controllers, such as improved ergonomics, better cross-device connectivity, a dedicated Share button and reduced latency. You will be able to pair and switch between your devices including the Xbox Series X / S, Xbox One, Windows PCs, Android and iOS via Xbox Wireless, and Bluetooth technology.

There’s also a special 20th-anniversary charging dock, in the same style as the other products. This charging stand will fully charge your controller in under 3 hours, and has been designed with overcharge protection to prevent overheating and short-circuiting.

The 20th anniversary headset is built upon the latest Xbox Stereo Headset, with all its accompanying bells and whistles such as an adjustable headband with plush cushioning to spread pressure more evenly around the top of the head, ultra-soft large earcups, and accessible on-ear controls for volume and mute. As always, it connects directly to the Xbox Wireless Controller or other devices through the 3.5mm audio jack, no batteries required.

To be honest… I think it’s pretty hideous. I’m really not a fan of the translucent finished look; why would I want to see my controllers’ insides? I’m plenty happy with my sleek, white, Xbox controller and dock. It doesn’t help that Xbox green is a pretty garish contrast with black. I think the green looks fantastic against white, but it is just not a nice combo with black.

The controller and headset seem to have received a very positive response overall, though. Seems I’m in the minority of thinking this is ugly. I guess that’s just the way: you can’t please everybody, right? One nifty feature of the controller, though, is that by connecting it to your Xbox Series X / S, you will unlock a special anniversary background. The retail price is set at £59.99, which is the same as other special edition controllers.

The post 20th anniversary Xbox controller and headset to launch first appeared on Get2Gaming.

Microsoft uses its own Cloud-based gaming service, the xCloud. It is now being powered by customised XboxSeriesX hardware, resulting in faster loading times and increased performance. Contextually brilliant in some ways, but with so many modern loading screens having lore snippets and gameplay tutorial information, this blessing can be a curse in disguise depending who you ask.

Initially, the xCloud’s improvements to loading and gameplay performance were only accessible to a handful of games like Yakuza LAD (Like a Dragon), DIRT 5 and Rainbow Six Seige. Now, those upgrades have been spread to the whole xCloud library.

Gaming/tech outlet and news organization The Verge has had a statement shared to them from Microsoft, claiming ‘it recently completed the upgrade, which improves both frame rates and game load times for players streaming Xbox games over the web’. Players can stream over 100 Xbox games on various devices through the xCloud, such as laptop, phone or tablet, rather than having to install and take up space on a single device. All you need is an active Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership and boom, you’re good to go… Provided you also have a compatible controller and high-speed internet, of course.

xCloud is also reported to be developing The Steam Deck with Valve, you can have a looksie at my controller review of that chestnut here. Xbox boss Phil Spencer (no relations to Frank or Richard) has also stated this year that the xCloud works well on Valve’s Steam Deck, the Handheld PC console. On the topic of Spencers being the barer of good news (except The Spencer That Shall Not Be Named), I highly recommend Some Mother’s Do Ave Em. Besides just being a funny gay ol time, Michael Crawford does his own stunts and there’s a lot of crazy fun in there, basically a whole show built around the British Jackie Chan. One of my favorites is in the episode about The Psychiatrist involving a bowling alley and peculiar choice of words that always made 12-year-old me burst into violent fits of smug giggling!

Epic Games title Fortnite is hosting its third short film festival as part of its annual ‘Fortnitemares’ Halloween tie-in event. The Unique Selling Point this time around will focus on the ‘Shortnitemares’ show, featuring animated short films in theme with or about the Halloween season.

The Event:

The last two Short Nite film events took place in a nonstop loop on a Party Royale island mode accessible from the main menu, featuring animated shorts from up and coming creators. This time around, we’ll be seeing a custom-made movie theatre from Quantum Builds, offering individual theatres for each short film to watch on demand in addition to a larger area projecting all the films on a loop.

I for one, am very happy this way of doing things was implemented! Have been to my share of mini Fortnite events and synching up with friends in time can be a little tricky at the best of times, so letting people play individual films at their own pace is a good choice.

An MCU Twist:

Speaking of good choices, you know what’s good? Marvel movies. What’s one of the cool things of Marvel movies? Shared universe. Well, if you want a different kinda shared universe to tide you over till the next big blockbuster, get stuck in to my own MCU. Monopoly Crossover Universe! Featuring classic blogs like Monopoly Halo, Monopoly Animal Crossing and now, Monopoly Fortnite (again)! Have a looksie here and here if you want to make some fine additions to your collection.

More Announcements and Theories:

So far, Epic Games hasn’t announced which short films will be showing, but given the recent Rifts mechanic, (where you enter the shadow realm and give zombies the shooty-bang-bang in exchange for better shooty-bang-bangs) I think we could expect to see some spoopy zombie-filled shlocky fun at some point in the cinema at least. Furthermore, leading up to the event, Epic has been giving more attention to fan-made Halloween-themed maps and modes, even some more advanced ones with classic homages to Frankenstein and The Mummy.There have also been a series of purchasable skins, some of which include spooky versions of existing characters, like the surreal existential horror of a sentient banana-skeleton hybrid or being possessed by the Lovecraftian horrors of The Cube Dimension.

Speaking of the cube dimension, AKA, ‘The Sideways’, AKA, please don’t go, I swear this bit won’t be an ad: Diligent Fortnite players have discovered that consumable cubes within the game that temporarily grant the ability to jump like Jump have the ability to move independently. Sources even show that they have the capacity to breed, so maybe you’re not corrupted by the mysterious cube forces in that one skin above. Maybe you’re just playing as the unholy offspring of the result of two or more cosmic semi-sentient space materials doing the horizontal limbo… Happy Nitemares everyone.

G’day gamers! Today’s the day I get EVEN MORE artistic freedom than I usually do (which is still a lot to begin with). So sit down and strap-on as I guide you through this handy little guide for any gamers looking for entertaining must-watch YouTubers. Everything from letsplays to video essays, feel free to comment your favourite gaming-focused YouTubers to add to the conversation.

Razbuten.

It’s only fitting my first recommendation is the bloke who’s claim to YouTube fame revolves around the wild and wonderful experience of introducing games to a non-gamer. Specifically, the lady he lives with (AKA his wife). In addition to his ‘Gaming for a Non-Gamer‘ video series, his video on ‘The Best Channels You Probably Missed‘ introduced me to the channel ‘Overanalysing Avatar‘, a hilarious love letter to all the surprising details you missed on your first watch (plus the occasional diatribe on how Katara shouldn’t canonically know what a door is). As a fellow YouTuber and creative myself, I found Razbuten’s ‘I hope this video doesn’t suck‘ to be shockingly relatable in a way I wasn’t expecting, but I imagine most people with any kind of block in their writing, art or other activities will.

Not alot of people know this about me, but I, to use parliamentary language, hecking stan Hollow Knight! Windette makes hilarious tutorial and analysis videos where the Unique Selling Point is that he explains everything… In insults. Click here for the lad’s ‘Explained In Insults’ playlist of videos, featuring everything from Hollow Knight, to Greek mythological lore and whatever the living hell Muck is!

Jim Sterling

In case it wasn’t too clear from my article on patents in gaming, Jim Stephanie Sterling definitely made an impression on me, dare I say a Jimpression even. Playing a role in exposing predatory business practices and worker misconduct in the gaming industry with a heaped tablespoon of colourfully strong language, the Jimquisition series does not disappoint for anyone looking to see dishonest CEOs and corrupt companies get roasted and slammed. The most recent video is on Microtransactions in gaming as an issue of accessibility and another not far down on ‘The Man Who Loved An Abortion Ban’ is also a good one.

Polygon / Brian David Gilbert

I put both of these because Brian David Gilbert’s ‘Unraveled’ series for Polygon is 100% of the reason I subscribed to Polygon in the first place. Click here for the Unraveled playlist, or as I like to call it, ’29 episodes of pure unadulterated bliss’. The episodes on ‘No one asked, but I found Mortal Kombat’s Best Cuddler‘ and ‘Ranking Bowser’s Military Hierarchy‘, which DEFINITELY doesn’t have any kind of real-world parallels in the absolute slightest😉. For those of you less into gaming though, have a gander at BDG’s channel for some good-ol-fashioned absurdist randomness, you won’t regret it.

Sunburned Albino

Mr Albino’s claim to YouTube fame is being one of the early pioneers of ‘boss ranking‘ videos! Bloodborne, Nioh, the Dark Souls series, Hollow Knight and more… But wait, there’s more! The lad has also done plenty of ‘waifu rankings’, where he compares some of the best female characters of different game series working from the bottom to the top (kinda like Drake). Waifu rankings include coverage on Persona 5, the Danganronpa series, Final Fantasy 7 and more! Lad’s video game music challenges are also a pretty big bop, so fingers crossed he’ll bring them back if he sees this.

Lixian TV

With Haloween just around the corner, let’s have a butcher’s at someone who’s main reason I watch is for his amazing and usually hilarious videos on horror games! Lixian also makes animated video highlights for Markiplier, another big-time YouTuber more in the letsplay scene. For the videos of Lixian I recommend,’Top 10 scariest moments in gaming‘ and ‘I made a game under 24 hours‘ are pretty entertaining insights into different ways horror in games can present themselves and an indie gaming competition specifically.

Super Butter Buns

So Super Butter Buns’ Breath of The Wild For Beginners video showed up in my feed and I was like-

And thank goodness she had a lot more videos! I was watching her give guides on games I didn’t even have at the time because her energetic demeanor and jokes were just that fun. Besides her For Beginners videos covering everything from Resident Evil 7 to Overwatch, her channel also introduced me to the upcoming indie title ‘Lost Soul Aside‘, which, based on the gameplay shown so far, looks phenomenal! Amazing spectacle-fighter gameplay in the vein of Bayonetta, Devil May Cry and Nier Automata AND graphics smoother than a melted butter on a freshly sauteed steak? Keep this one on your radar folks.
